PROJECT INTRODUCTION University students face anxiety and depression before enter the real world of society. There is a extraordinary transaction between a student and a business worker. Different from being a student, a business worker has to face thousand times of stress and pressure from the unfriendly society enviroment. A young student worker might not can fit into the harsh atmosphere immediately, one has to gain experience though time and knowledge, which could bring negative affects on emotions and enthusiasm. As the type of people wanted to escape from the reality, one choose to find an imaginative space to express all the negative energy. Sleeping and dreaming has the connection allow people not only to get effective, also positive sleep experience. However, none of the method guaranteed with dreams every time. Surprisingly, death is similar to sleep, both lying on a flat surface, mind runs rapidly.
8
PROBLEM SPACE “I wanna die.” This is the first thought while I am facing with difficult situations. We choose to stay awake because we did not want to end our days that quickly. As a person with sleeping problems, I wanted to get effective rest but things does not come true everytime. Dreams occur in sleep is because the person is actually getting well-quality sleep. A good, healthy sleep means feeling rested upon waking up. However, people isn’t guaranteed with dreams every time. Instead of entering nihility, why can’t we have a better dream to pleasure ourselves? We are the dreamcathers, we help people dream while escaping from the boring reality.
9
DREAMCATCHERS PROBLEM SPACE Should we face real world’s helpless, or enjoy virtual world’s supremacy. As the type of person who struggles about sleeping problem, I am not having insomnia or sickness, but my mind was forcing me to stay awake all the time because I don’t want to end a day that quickly. We dream while we sleep, but after we awake in the morning, we forgot all things that happened in our dreams. “I dreamt myself as a butterfly, or did the butterfly dreamt it was me” by Zhouzhuang. My project’s name will be DREAMCATCHERS, to help people enjoy sleeping and dreaming. For my concept, I will be focusing on the topic of dream and butterfly. Reality and virtual reality has similarities, instead of entering a nihility, why can’t we have a better dream to pleasure ourselves? For this project, I would like to research further on sleeping problems, health problems, lucid dreams and more.
PROJECT DIRECTIONS
RESOURCES
1. Brand Campaign Create a campaign for a futuristic product to control dreams (virtual world). So we could enjoy dreaming while still sleepings, and would be able to remember what did we dreamed. We could remain our identity in the dream (virtual world), or just to follow the plot.
Movie: Inception 2010 Movie: The Matrix 1999 Book: Zhuangzi by Master Zhuang c. 369 BC – c. 286 BC Book: Lucid Dreaming: The Paradox of Consciousness During Sleep
2. Publication Design Create a booklet with diagrams and words to show the proper ways to put one into a better sleeping mode (deep sleep, light sleep, lucid dreams etc.). Ways to record dreams.

BEFORE RESEARCH At the beginning of the semester, my project idea was totally different from what I decided after. I wanted to use sleep as a platform for people to enter an imaginative world in their mind. However, this virtual world is different from regular dreams, it is actually another parallel world where people could actually live in. Base on this setting, people could choose either living in the reality world or the virtual reality world. Bascially, a person could split two living methods. During the day time, one could live as a hard working business worker; during the night time, one could live as a Peter Pan flying in the sky freely. The virtual world is like an online platform, all people could choose to connect together. While considering the method to achieve this delusion, lucid dreaming could be a possible way. Other than regular dreaming, people could remain their awareness and control right during lucid dreaming.
PROJECT THEME We choose to stay awake because we did not want to end our days that quickly. We dream while we sleep, but we will forget everything after we awake in the moring. Instead of entering nihility, why can’t we have a better dream to pleasure ourselves? We are the dreamcathers, we help people lucid dreaming while escaping from the boring reality.
12
PRECEDENTS RESEARCH Even though the term “lucid” means clear, lucid dreaming is more than just having a clear dream. To have a lucid dream you must know that it’s a dream while you’re dreaming. People get attracted to lucid dreaming because they want to be able to do things they could never do. Imagine being able to fly, walk through walls shape shift, breathe under water and see loved ones or pefect strangers in your dreams. More and more experienced lucid dreamers are realizing the benefits of lucid dreaming. You can use it to explore the boundaries of your own agency and the limits of the universe.
PROJECT DIRECTIONS 1. FULL BRAND To create a futristic products to help people get into lucid dreams easily. Project indicate visual identity, art direction, instructions, publication etc. 2. INTERACTION SPACE To create an comfortable interative space with viewers. A well prepare sleeping place with visual disorder projection to immitate reality and virtual reality, sleeping in bed and flying in dream. There will be indicate five senses; sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch.
13
LITERATURE RESEARCH Lucid dreaming historical cases, and how lucid dreams can be induced and controlled. The dream is real, how to deal whileing traveling in dreams.

INSPIRATION I enjoy reading comics and Japanese manga since I was young. I appreciate this graphic style which allow both adults and children to enjoy the work. People always thinking comics are for children, since only childish contents will use comics or cartoons as a method to represent. This is a stereotype for sure, many of the cartoons that I watched has deep meanings inside. Both comics and cartoons are similar to movies and photography, just different methods. For this project, I am more looking into the comic styles, so I will be doing more visual research on illustration, comics, and illustrations drawings. I will be using Pinterest to collect my inspiration images.
16
INTERVIEW In this initial stage, I wanted to ask simple questions to people about things that help them to sleep based on the five sense. I got some basic information and knowledge about people’s sleeping habits and comfortable zone. Makes me want to research deeper about this area.
17
18
WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU DO BEFORE GOING TO BED? I will be dividing my research into mainly two parts: sleeping habits and dreaming. I put posters around the school for people to write down their answers and suggestions, then I got many interesting feedbacks which I have never thought of. Dreams occur in sleep is because the person is actually getting well-quality sleep, I am curious what are the common ways that help people to sleep. The first survey shows that many people are relying on techonologies such as social medias and Youtube. Many response also mention methods such as ASMR (Autonomous sensory meridian response), Yoga, masterbate, sex, music, reading etc. No matter of what methods, people will try to find entertainments and relaxation before bed. These ways help people to calm or stress-free, it is like isolate them from reality.
WHAT DO YOU USUALLY DREAM ABOUT? According to the third survey, there were few people talking about their nightmare but the majority of people are more likely to share their good dream experience. People will often become ambitious in their dreams,
19
doing something that might be impossible in the reality such as being on another planet look at Earth, experiencing -399 degree of coldness. There are some people also memtion death and killing, which resonates with me. I usually dream about adventures or death.
ANY HABITS OR PRODUCTS THAT MAKES YOU GET A GOOD DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? Similar to the first survey, people gave a lot of useful suggestions and concerns about dreams. Many wrote ealistic methods such as no ice coffee after 4 PM, wear socks to bed, sleeping on back, cleaning bed room etc. These are pratical solutions that commonly spread, and I have heard many of those already. I was confused whether I should do something clinical or speculative. When I am facing difficulties, I will choose to research answers online so many official answers are easy to get. I did not want to do a publication filled with all medical knowledge, otherwise it will be boring from the perspective of a designer. This survery clarify my direction of finding unusally and peculiar ideas.

FIRST ACTIVITY An warm up post note activity allow my team members get into my problem space by asking their concerns and thinking about sleeping problems. Many of the problems were about inner problems such as having struggles and over thinking about their daily stress and school problems.
25
26
SECOND ACTIVITY A picture matching activity bring the awareness of from their innerself. Members get to slow down their thinking while cutting down the paper images, then tape them on a chart to show members’ most comfortable and most stressful items/beahvious when choosing a way to help them get into sleep. Members get to present their idea and explaination in the group, we discuss and determine where does the stress sources came from. After this activity, I noticed many members put medical products on the most stressful space, then human interaction to the most comfortable space. They answered, they don’t want to rely on pills since it sounds cold and negative. This pushed me to decide what kind of products I should choose for my project package.

a solution to solve the problem; cartogram that shows healthly sleeping hours from different age group. With these graphic maps, will be easiler for me to clarify my target audiences.

PRODUCT RESEARCH In this stage, I was trying to figure out a product as an inspiration for my futuristic product. I seared some already existed products such as medicines and aromatherapy etc. What I found interesting was the products that help to easily get into the lucid dreaming stage, the description sounded rediculous but many Youtubers recommanded this product while I was searching “Lucid Dream” as the keyword. I gained some learning about the opponents, and decided I should think more wild.
REMEE EYE MASK Using gentle, customizable light signals, Remee not only increases dream recall and vividness, but helps unlock the world of lucid dreaming.Remee’s rear-facing LEDs serve as your touchstone to the waking world. Using a series of smart timers, light patterns are displayed throughout the night, targeting your REM cycles where dreams most often occur.
37
DREAM LEAF LUCID DREAMING SUPPLEMENT Dream Leaf activates the neurotransmitters involved in conscious dreaming, helping you maintain a level of consciousness and control while dreaming so you can have incredibly vivid, memorable lucid dreams. Dream Leaf helps you experience a healthy balance of deep sleep and REM sleep to ensure that you wake up feeling refreshed and well-rested.
HELLO SENSE Sense is an orb-like bedside device, about the size of a tennis ball. Looking like a futuristic bird’s nest, Sense comes in two colours, white and charcoal and is powered by a micro USB connector. Wave your hand over the Sense and it glows different colours according to sleep conditions ; green if everything is good, yellow if something is a little off and orange if you should adjust.

COMIC EXPLAINATION 1. There is a big transaction changing from a student to a business worker. There will be thousands of stress and anxiety during the process. 2. Anxiety and stress are the biggest problem causing people to not get enough effective rest. People often thinks more, which resulting in having negative sleeping experience. 3. According to research, dreams occur in sleep is because the person is actually getting well-quality sleep. A good, healthy sleep means feeling rested upon waking up. 4. However, people isn’t guaranteed with dreams every time. Sometimes their mind just enter niihlity. 5. Why can’t people dream in anytime they want? There are no harms in dreaming anyways. Actually, having dreams in sleeps are beneficial for the ones who always suffer from reality stress. 6. Of course, there are many ways to put a person to sleep easier such as medical products and treatments. But those methods do not improve one’s sleeping experience. Hence, something more effective is needed.
47
7. The ideal method to help people to get away from reality stress ,and to get proper rests is to allow their minds to enter an imaginative space. 8. Surprisingly, death is similar to sleep, both lying on a flat surface. 9. Tada! Let’s introduce out latest sleeping product, “Dream Catchers.” This kit contains a variety of products to help people entering that imaginative space by putting them in a death-alike sleeping situation, in order to achieve the most sufficient sleep. 10. By using this product, the user will become less stressful than before. By placing on our special plastic bag will reduce the amount of oxygen the users consume, which it leads them to an apparent death situation. Then, their minds will be entering an imaginative realm. The plastic bag itself will pop witihin a fixed amount of time, assuring the safest experience for the user. 11. After using this product, people will definitely become less stressful and well-rested. Having dreams are important for memory consolidation or conflict resolution. 12. Undoubtedly, people will more likely waking up with a positive mindset after eliminating the negativities in last night’s sleeps. With this purpose in mind, should you use Dream Catchers? I think so.

REFINE IDEA Due to the poster critique held at the beginning of the semester, I was criticized by several classmates saying my project was poke fun to suicide people, which is completely false. To be honest, the product itself has no right or wrong, it really depends on how a person is going to use it. You can’t wake a person who is pretending to be asleep. If a person who is trying to suicide, anything can be his weapon. After this critique, I was thinking to refine my execute idea of P.D.C. I was not afraid how other people are going to judge me, but there could be a more creative for execution.

REFINE IDEA About the execution, I thinked of many ways to ensure the safety of using pastic. Everything is possible, since mine is a speculative project that might take place in 50 years later. I thought allowing little paxies to eat up plastic bag could be a good idea, but other will be difficult to believe this is going to happen, I need some successful evidence to prove my idea will work but how? Withing a lot of questions are wondering in mind, my instructor of this semester: Casey Hrynkow, suggested me to recreate an user journey map to organize thoughts which helps a lot. Writing things down is better to thinking all over again in mind. This process made my idea more clear and reasonable. When people have other questions about my project, I will feel more confident to answer them.
64
REFINE IDEA My instuctor introduced float tank, an exmaple that close to my ideal situation, where a person can float in a close space container filled with salty water then floating to release stress and to increase imagination. The idea of this is to away from the busy city then meditation deeply for self-healing.
65
Base on the flat tank service, having a professional worker to look after can be the safest way to ensure the safesty experience for users. What came to my mind was the coffin bed, where the user can go to an clinic and enjoy the service. The coffin bed itself will allow the user sleep immidiatly, reduce oxygen, and lower down temperature.

MASCOT IN THREE DIMENSION I was traveling through Japan during read week, what I brough back for souvenir was a interesting mascot packaging filled up with chocolate. Morinaga Company’s famous bird mascot was printed on the package. The packaging itself amazed me by its creative and funny function. The mascot box itself will show its ordinary face, when I open the box, it will show a pity face underneath, which made everything look fun and amused. During the class critique, my classmate suggested I should make my mascot into three dimension. What first came to my mind was the Morinaga bird mascot box. So I took it as a inspiration and worked on the packaging design.

PREPARE FOR GRADSHOW EXHIBITION I am interested in overwhelm graphic or products. For my show preparation, I will be placing a lot of P.D.C mascot boxes to represent people who used our service. Then promotion booklet as the news paper to allow visitors to take away. Vinyl stickers of logo and decriptions to introduce the product. For my prepairation, I will only need a wall and a table. Instead of plane white wall, I will be using the “TADA“ colour pattern as the background, which could give out a more overhelm feeling. I will be showing more pictures in the following.

I am satisfy what I am having right now, I could have done more than that but things still looking good overall. P.D.C. is my last project before graduate. I believe it would be the last time for me to do what I like to do. Many people diagree with my idea and my project, but I am just doing what I really like. I’m glad that my professiors and some classmates supported me during the year. My ideas changed quickly through out the year, from being minimal to comic. I was heavily influenced by Japanese culture so I tried to make things look hilarious and overwhelm and it worked. I have learned a lot in my fourth year, I noticed it is difficult to cater for one’s every wish. Everyone have different beauty standard, if one likes it, another might dislike it. I believe what I have done is correct and I will be keep going to my own path. I hope everyone can enjoy my project, everything will happen in the future. Just get rid of all stereotypes and start imagine. :)
