The X Shore’s BMW-made batteries use an advanced water-cooling system to provide longer battery life and enhance performance. Because the propulsion system is modular, you could add in a further two batteries to double its range

Be at one with the ocean, without the sound of an engine killing your buzz. The X Shore eElectric is, as you may have guessed, an all-electric boat designed to blend in with its natural environment instead of polluting it with noise and emissions. This Scandinavian-looking day-cruiser was created by Konrad Bergström, founder of Marshall Headphones, who brought in Glenn Karlsson, winner of the Swedish classic boat race Roslagsloppet, to design an energy-saving hull that draws air in under the boat, thereby reducing friction from the water. The eElectric boasts an advanced propulsion system with dual engines and BMW i3 batteries, and delivers a top speed of 25 knots. The best new tech heading your way

PARROT ANAFI `TBA, parrot.com Once upon a time, all you needed to enjoy the great outdoors was yourself and a sense of adventure. You can still get by with those, but now we’re spoiled for choice with gadgets that love the natural landscape as much as we do, and let you explore it it all new ways. The most exhilarating of these is the camera drone. For the longest time, DJI has had the market sewn up, but that could be about to change; Parrot has released its new folding drone, the Anafi, and it’s gunning for the DJI Mavic Air’s crown. Parrot’s 4K HDR flying video camera is built for ‘anytime, anywhere’ use, from dusty dirt trails to snow-covered vistas, with a 53km/h top speed to cover the distance. The camera films in 4K HDR and 4K Cinema (4096x2160) at pro quality, so those dramatic peaks will look amazing. The 21MP, 1/2.4-inch Sony CMOS sensor should produce epic stills too. Its three-axis gimbal keeps the camera moving smoothly, and can even tilt to record straight down or straight up – a drone first. The only downside, and the reason why the Mavic Air might cling to its hovering crown, is that the Anafi has no obstacle-avoidance tech. But if you’re confident in your flying skills and want an afordable drone with a superior camera, generous 25-minute battery life and a suite of intelligent flight modes, throw the Anafi in your backpack and hit the trail.

TECH-O-METER

The Anafi’s frame is inspired by insects: the head (camera and threeaxis gimbal), the thorax (electronics and mechanics), and the abdomen (the li-ion battery)

The tight spec, folding design and good price make the Parrot Anafi a hefty DJI challenger W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

Parrot Anafi

FLIGHT SCHOOL Parrot’s AI-infused Anafi can be controlled via a series of automated flight modes. There’s SmartDronies for aerial selfies, Cameraman, putting you in control, and Follow Me, which uses a neural network to tightly hone in on the star of your image

ROCK STEADY Anafi is the first drone with a camera that can tilt 40 degrees vertically, ensuring the camera stays steady whatever the weather throws at you and inspiring you to capture images from innovative new angles

SKY, CAMERA, ACTION! Not only is the Anafi’s camera equipped with lossless zoom (1.4x in 4K, 2.8x in Full HD), it also ofers Dolby Zoom, a cinematic feature that enables you to hone in on a fixed subject while moving the background away

SONY HT-S700RF & HT-S500RF From `29,990, sony.co.in In the quest of saving space and cutting down on wires, we have seen many 5.1 channel soundbar systems lately. Sony’s HT-S700RF and HT-S500RF are just recent contributions designed and tuned specifically for the Indian market. Both share the same diamond cut soundbar delivering 1000W (RMS) of power from the two tweeters and three speakers held within. Coming to the ports there is an aux jack, optical input, USB and HDMI port that supports Audio Return Channel (ARC). The diference is the tallboy style rear speakers with 20cm subwoofer of the HT-S700RF while the HT-S500RF has bookshelf speakers and 18cm subwoofer. The Sony Music Centre app provides an easy control as well as file navigation for plugged-in drives. Unfortunately, there is no support for HD wireless audio streaming codecs and NFC but AAC SBC works well. For enhanced sound quality, dual speaker connection can be harnessed making it suitable for outdoor environments. It has a weight of 355 grams and dimensions of 140x74x75mm. T3 Says: The compactness and budget pricing will make it a shoo-in for the youngsters.

SOULFIT SONIC TALKBAND V08 `9,999, soulfit.io Now here is something that turns a ‘what if’ into a reality. What if your fitness band turned into a Bluetooth handsfree? The Soulfit Sonic V08 does exactly that by being detachable and changing its form akin to a transformer once the earpiece is pulled out with the press of a button. A 0.96-inch OLED display adorns the front while packing inside a step counter, heart rate monitor, phone tracker, and sleep monitor. In addition, it can also act as a remote control to take pictures after getting paired with a smartphone. The HBand app that can be downloaded from the Play store or iTunes app store is required to harness the full functionality of the Talkband. Google Assistant or Siri can also be used for voice control in times when it’s better to focus on the current task like driving. T3 Says: Projected life from the 85mAh battery is 3-4 days on standby mode and should be lesser if the user is more active.

Skyworth has brought forth three models in M20 smart LED series that include 32-, 43- and 49-inch sizes. Starting with the smallest, the 32-inch has a quad-core processor with dual-core GPU, HD (1366x768) resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, 20W stereo speaker and 1200:1 contrast ratio. The larger models share the same specifications other than being Full HD (1920x1080) and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. Users can download from the App store and even sideload apps using APKs which is welcome but do note that not all of them will be compatible. HAIR CARE TIPS FOR MEN Celebrity hairstylist Jamie Stevens on how to protect and nourish your hair and scalp Most of us know that sun damage wreaks havoc upon the skin, but did you know that it can also spell disaster for your hair and scalp? Regular doses of blazing sun can cause all sorts of issues for hair: frizziness, split ends, dryness and burnt strands are all par for the course in summer. So looking after your hair and scalp is just as important as protecting your skin, which is why we recently spoke to Jamie Stevens, celebrity hairstylist and three-time winner of the British Men’s Hairdresser of the Year Award, to learn how to nourish the hair and scalp throughout summer. “You probably wouldn’t dream of going out with unprotected skin in the sun and you should see your head and hair as an extension of this,” says Jamie. “Hair burns, and mattifying products along with the natural efect of environmental factors, the sun, sea and pool all really dry out hair.” Using a nourishing hair mask once a week is enough to keep your hair in good condition. Gloss Moderne’s clean Luxury Masque is a treat for sun-damaged hair, or if your thatch is more coarse and curly, keep it better conditioned with Kiehl’s Damage Repairing and Rehydrating Leave-In Treatment. To protect your scalp, use a few spritzes of Banana Boat’s non-greasy Scalp Spray. “You can get some great UV hair and scalp products,” continues Jamie, “but if you’re caught without anything, put on some suntan lotion.” Nourishing your hair and scalp will also stand it in good stead if you choose to add in some lighter areas of colour.

Opinion

Duncan Bell is speechless Voice-controlling tech? I’m sorry, I’m having trouble understanding you right now… lexa! Hey Siri! Okay Google. Bixby, I summon thee. A few years ago, if you said those things out loud to inanimate objects, people would have thought you were mad. Today, they will only think that if you say the last one. And yet, I’m not ‘down’ with it, as today’s modern young people say. When Siri and Google Assistant launched, I tried them out. Once, for some reason, I asked an Android Wear watch, “Is Jim Bowen dead?” to ‘test’ it. Impressively, it duly provided evidence that he was not, at the time. Then, Echo and its robovoice genie Alexa arrived. Yes, my bisexual/swinging relationships with Ms/Mr Siri and Ms/Mr Google* had swiftly faltered – we don’t even exchange Christmas emails anymore – but Alexa seemed fresh and diferent. *As a side note to this, you could write a book on the gender politics of choosing to make an AI assistant ‘female’ by default… but maybe it shouldn’t be by me, A Man.

A

Alexa. Alexa! ALEXA! Just as in all the best relationships with humans, I found the Amazon AI was attentive to my commands, and obedient. More importantly, unlike Google and Siri, Alexa seemed to really listen to me, so I didn’t have to endlessly repeat my commands or be constantly met with “I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you’re on about,” which I get enough of from people, really. However, over time, a certain frostiness has developed. Again, just as with real people, the more you get to know Alexa, the more irritating it becomes. This is odd, because the idea of W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

et AI is for it to ge better over tim me, as it ‘learns’, yet for whatever reason, Alexa seems ever less able to hear what I’m saying as time goes by. Voice control relies heavily on trust. If, when conversing with a human, you say something the other person ig gnores, it is mortifying. The e same applies to inanimate objects – more so, in fact, because the notion of speaking to a pile of plastic with microchips in feels inherently stupid to us. So when Alexa starts doing that thing where the little light comes on, like it’s listening to you, but then it deliberately and calculatingly refuses to turn on the lounge Philips Hue Lightstrip, that hurts. Then there’s Alexa’s ‘sense of humour’. Whenever I meet people from Amazon, they are at pains to tell me that people love Alexa’s

Nobody in the history of comedy has ever asked for a shark joke ‘quirky’ ‘personality’ and ‘jokes’. The thing here is, you usually have to know in advance what to ask her. For instance, Amazon suggests you might ask for a ‘shark joke’. Hang on, why would you do that? Nobody in the history of comedy has ever asked for a shark joke. The only reason you would do that is that you had read somewhere – say, on a website that has published a press release from

Amazon – that you should ask Alexa for a ‘shark joke’. Okay, and here is the joke: “Why don’t sharks eat clown fish? They taste funny.” Right. Now firstly, that joke would not be funny if delivered by a clone made from the DNA of Richard Pryor, Cary Grant and Chuckles the Extra Amusing Clown. It’s definitely not when rendered in Alexa’s sub-HAL 9000 monotone. And secondly, WTF even is a clown fish? That joke is just rubbish. Don’t tell me my reservations are because I’m too old to ever be comfortable with AI or voice control of tech, either. I know millennials, and they adopt the same nervous tone when speaking to voice assistants, because even their young, barely formed and avocado-addled minds have learned all too well the rejection and contempt that may well result from asking them anything. Hell, even my nephews, who are all under 12, adopt a distinctly aggressive approach to asking their Google Home to do anything – again, just as they do with real people. Home AIs still have a long way to go to be accepted, but maybe it’s not because they are alien and futuristic; perhaps it’s that they are all too human. TCL and Hisense have made big inroads into the western market already, with (it appears) some quality screens chopping a big chunk of of the usual asking price; Seiki and Skyworth are brands to watch as well. Although Guru is, as you might imagine, utterly sick of football, it seems GaGu Jr has gotten the bug and learned how to squirrel Daddy’s credit card out of his wallet when he’s not looking. Hence the arrival of the Zepp Play Football tracker, a little rounded rectangle you shove in a special sock next to your calf. It pairs with an app (of course), keeps tabs on your distance, sprints, and measures a bunch of metrics about your kicks – perfect for pro players, but a little unnecessary for a boy who can barely get a ball to trundle along in a straight line.

If you’re utterly loopy and use your laptop for serious gaming, you probably should have done it about 10 minutes ago, and then again in 10 minutes time. Maybe someone should set up a subscription service or something. Actually, GaGu now realises he’s describing leasing, which is an option, but is possibly a bit much for your average punter (it’s a solid choice for pros who constantly need faster and more expensive machines to fuel their greedy ambition, though). Otherwise, Guru would probably go for it when the battery decides it would rather be a dangerous pillow instead, or when your gadget-filled bag issues the screen its terminal knock. OS updates on both Mac and Windows seem, somehow, to be taking a rather considerate approach to legacy hardware. Fancy trying VR but can’t stomach the price of a high-end setup? Lenovo’s Mirage Solo Headset is PC-, cable- and external sensor-free. Instead it uses Google WorldSense tech that works with two internal tracking cameras and proximity sensors to detect objects and recreate your movements on the 5.5inch display. You have access to 250+ apps on the Daydream OS, enabling you to explore exciting new worlds or, you know, more of this one. lenovo.com

The One X is one mighty gaming and media machine. A powerful processor and huge graphics performance enables you to run the latest games at 4K natively, rather than upscaled from a lower resolution. And all in glorious HDR, too. Plus, there’s support for Dolby Atmos, so they sound absolutely convincing. Once you’ve completed all your games, kick back with a 4K Blu-ray or dig into your media on the 7%bLQWHUQDO GULYH xbox.com

hanks to the combined rise of activity trackers and smartwatches, being a GPS sports watch simply isn’t enough nowadays. A premium sports watch must do everything: count steps, calories and sleep 24/7, relay notifications and be a desirable, brightly coloured vibrating gadget that people want to tap, swipe and constantly tinker with. What’s fascinating about the three GPS sports watches on test is that they’re all trying to make the same thing, but coming at it from totally different angles. Garmin has long been

T

W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

the master of the sports watch, but has lagged behind on the more crowdpleasing trendy smartwatch stuff. Apple knows all about that, but can it turn its hand to a genuinely credible premium sports piece to rival Garmin? Meanwhile, can newer kid on the block, Fitbit, hitherto master of simpler activity trackers, up its game significantly enough to make a viable rival to these two? The sports-minded consumer expects a wrist-based gadget that can accurately record reams of data from their workouts – be that running, cycling, swimming, gym-based

gurning and more – collate it and coach from it. But alongside that, count steps and monitor heart rate and sleep all around the clock. While we do want them to be connected to the social world, it’s not our biggest focus here: we’re primarily judging them on their ability to help you beat your personal bests and feel harder, better, faster, and whatever else that song said. So who does that the best? And which watches make compromises too far? And when it comes down to the wire, who can offer that little bit extra? We put each watch through its paces to find out.

DESIGN Comfort and usability are key to a good sports watch, with points for style he Apple Watch is the most immediately attention-grabbing of the three GPS watches on test here. The Watch’s softer corners and raised 3D screen whisper seductive things to your fingertips, inviting a touch, tap or swipe. Then it pings to life in magnificent colours. The display is large and clear, and fitness apps start at the mere tickle of the screen. At-a-glance metrics such as pace, speed and distance are easy to see, even when exercising. The Apple Watch has two buttons, but neatly one doubles as a dial, useful for zooming in and out or changing pages in an app. It’s also sturdy and waterproof. Maybe it’s just in the name, but initially the Ionic does have something of a tracker, rather than a smartwatch, feel. The LCD screen brightness, however, reaches 1,000 nits (the same as the Apple Watch) and means you can view it even in bright sunlight. The Ionic’s design is clean and simple, even if the squareness feels a bit Cold War modernist; big and bulky and not as comfy as the other two on a thinner wrist. It’s waterproof though, so no need for faffing about either end of that post-run shower. Aesthetically, it will divide opinion, but many of us don’t buy sports watches primarily for how stylish they are. The Garmin, meanwhile, has a screen that’s clear, sharp and easy to read – even if it’s less

T

The Ionic’s bands are really easy to switch, and you can purchase sporty bands in various colours, or smarter leather options

The Apple Watch’s soft corners and raised screen whisper seductive things colourful than its rivals – with a button-activated light for darker conditions. Transflective technology, meanwhile, makes it clear and bright when light is shining directly on it. The five buttons are satisfying to use and it’s a very lightweight (42g), attractive thing, especially by fitness wearable standards. The rounded display can make things a little bit congested when you’ve got four different bits of data on one screen, but even then it’s fairly easy to read with a squint. The metal rim around the edge of the 1.2-inch display both protects the Gorilla Glass 3 and makes it appear somehow industrial and stylish at the same time. Once again, it’s waterproof.

POWER PLAYS WHICH WATCH HAS FOUND THE RIGHT BALANCE BETWEEN FEATURES AND BATTERY LIFE?

W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

Naturally, the more a smartwatch can do, the more battery it needs. So it’s probably not surprising that while the Apple Watch’s battery life isn’t bad by smartwatch standards (about three or four days, despite Apple’s conservative estimate), LIb\RXèUH XVXDOO\ XVLQJ LW DV D VSRUWV ZDWFK there’s no question that you’ll need to charge up daily, which by sports watch

standards is not fantastic. Fitbit claims four-plus days of battery, though as ever that’s very dependent on usage. For a running watch that’s not bad. For a smartwatch, it’s great. At seven days with general use and 14 hours in GPS mode (without music) – about four days of use if you’re working out regularly – the Garmin is superior here.

FEATURES Which of our watches offers the EHVWbVSRUWV DWWULEXWHV" ll three devices have heart-rate (HR) monitors, a really useful aid for keeping an eye on your resting and all-day HR; for helping to avoid overtraining, general tiredness or, more positively, to see signs you’re getting fitter. However, wrist-based HR tracking isn’t as accurate as chest-strap HR monitors. In fact, with Garmin’s HRM-Run chest strap wirelessly connected, the Forerunner leaps ahead of every other sports watch: the chest strap is also a motion sensor that tracks cadence, ground contact time and vertical oscillation – useful technique data for those serious about improving their running. It all syncs to the Forerunner for perusal. The Fitbit’s excellent hook is the beginner-friendly Fitbit Coach, which provides tailored workouts that show you exactly what to do. You supply post-exercise feedback and Fitbit Coach determines whether you need to go harder or ease up. Fitbit plans to introduce audio workouts – which should avoid some of the mid-exercise wrist checking. As you’d expect, the Ionic is an excellent activity tracker, recording steps, distance covered, stairs climbed, calories burned, how well you’ve slept, and reminding you not to sit still for too long. For atheletes, activity tracking is very much secondary to accuracy and data for real workouts, though. All three watches have Bluetooth and some internal storage that you can sync playlists to – so you can leave

APPLE WATCH

GARMIN MUSIC 645

The Forerunner leaps into a new world where other watches haven’t followed your phone behind and still let Meatloaf power you along. Whereas the other two pieces are sports watches souped up to become smartwatches, the Apple Watch has come at things from the opposite angle. The sports data is somewhat basic, but it being Apple, you can use third-party apps to expand the options. The range of metrics tracked by the Nike+ app doesn’t match Garmin’s, but Nike’s social platform is a great motivator. And for daily activity tracking (including much of what the Fitbit covers) smartphone interaction and apps, nothing really matches Apple.

PERFORMANCE :KLFK ZDWFK LV UHDOO\ JRLQJ WR KHOS \RX EHDW \RXU WLPHV DQG IHHO ĆWWHU" ith its extensive pedigree in navigational devices, Garmin should be pretty good at tracking… and it is. The 645 provides benchmark accuracy for GPS tracking of runs and cycles, and crunches a lot of data based on your cardiovascular efforts. It can suggest recovery times, estimate your VO2 Max, tell you how optimal your training load is and much more. For activity tracking – the entry-level stuff Garmin has been behind on previously – it also excels. Usefully, the 645 counts and sets targets for your ‘intensity minutes’ – the amount of time spent doing something more exerting than walking to the shops. And it’s attractive enough that you happily wear it all day, from the office to the (juice) bar. The Ionic’s HR monitor can be a bit odd. It seems accurate during intense activity, but erratic at lower levels of exertion. For general tracking and resting/ average heart-rate and workouts in the higher cardio/ threshold/intense zones, the watch is good. It’s just the area in between where things go a bit zany. A further failing of the Ionic is that although it shows your heart rate when you work out, it doesn’t show what zone you’re in, so you have to remember where each one begins or ends.

The Garmin’s GPS and HR are more accurate and reliable than its rivals – the watch just works better for fitness. W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

For optimal training, you need rest and recovery, and the Ionic monitors not just your hours of sleep but also the quality, according to your heart rate activity and movements. It then breaks your night down into deep, light and REM sleep, which is pretty advanced. Like Garmin, the Apple Watch encourages you to meet a minimum number of minutes of exercise each day (which could be vigorous walking or a workout). In the Workouts app, you get continuous heart-rate monitoring once you’ve told it you’re starting an activity, though the wrist-based monitoring seemed less accurate than the Garmin. Frustratingly, it took 2-3 minutes to detect a HR strap pre-workout for more accurate tracking, which eats into your activity time. The GPS was also slower than the other watches.

Nothing to excite but quality never goes out of style WORDS ANKUSH MAHAJAN

he Note series from Samsung has gone through a lot of meaningful iterations over the years ever since the first was released in 2011. After the unfortunate 7th edition, the company worked hard to gain back the trust with 8 and has eradicated all traces of it with the Note9. It very clearly encapsulates the philosophy of giving more to the demanding users of today. Thankfully, it does so in ways that are useful and not to tick off a checklist filled with frivolous features.

Design: a thing of beauty A similar design to last year’s model can be seen here with the usage of metal inside and curved glass on the front and back. It is a thick and chunky device but balanced well so there is no tendency to tilt to one side or the other. Though the hand feel is superb, we advise taking a few short breaks in between to avoid fatigue due to the heavy 201g weight. There is an eclectic choice of colours available this time including Ocean Blue, Lavender Purple, Metallic Copper and Midnight Black. We got the Ocean Blue unit for review having an air of sophistication around it that we really liked, darker than similar shades used in the past. On the rear, the fingerprint sensor has been re-positioned and now sits below the cameras instead of adjacent which will stop the complaints of accidentally blocking or smudging the lens. Instead, the heart rate gives it company. At the top lies the hybrid slot allowing for operation of two nano SIMs or single with a microSD card while the bottom houses the S Pen, speaker grille, USB Type-C port and 3.5mm jack. On the left is the Bixby button with the volume rocker above it and the on right rests the power/lock key all alone. It is highly durable as 72 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today SEPTEMBER 2018

we would have welcomed a true edge-to-edge picture and 120Hz refresh rate, it still stands head and shoulders above the majority.

The star of the show is indisputably the S Pen, now Bluetooth LE enabled with an integrated battery that charges in under a minute when docked. Excluding the nib, the entire stylus is drenched in a fabulous yellow and curiously Ocean Blue is the only model to not come with a matching colour. Bluetooth functionality really changes the game as now the S Pen is not just a passive tool limited to writing and drawing. It works as a remote control of sorts with a single press and double press of the button on the side triggering various functions. You don’t need to be in its line of sight to work but within the 30 feet range for it to register the command. Applications for this include taking pictures from afar from a stand or during a video recording, switching the camera side, changing presentation slides, controlling music playback and third-party implementation is said to be coming. Jotting down on a sleep screen is convenient and the note can be pinned for half an hour. The artistically inclined can exploit its

It would be no exaggeration to say that the 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity screen having 516ppi (pixels per inch) is among the best displays we have seen with brilliant colour reproduction, deep blacks, clear whites and smooth gradients. It’s certainly hard to understate the richness and vividness that can be felt. By default, it runs at a resolution of 2220x1080 (FHD+) but there is a choice to crank it up to 2960x1440 (WQHD+). There are minimal bezels on the sides with enough to fit in the cameras and speaker thus banishing the need of a notch. The floating Always on Display can be set to a variety of styles of which there are plenty and can also be disabled. Auto Brightness does a good job of maintaining the lighting appropriate to the environment and never felt it necessary to tweak. potential by painting, calligraphy, sketching with the finer tip supporting 4,096 pressure levels. In the office, select-and-cut, magnify, folder preview by hovering and translation will reign supreme we surmise.

Performance: power to the max We got the 6GB RAM+128GB storage variant which performed super smooth owing to the top end Exynos 9810 SoC from Samsung. Apps opened in a jiffy with zero hints of lag or stutter and we did not experience a single crash. Playing intensive games currently in trend aka Fortnite and PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds (PUBG) felt liberating when cranking all the settings to the max with no slowdowns but our hands started to beg for relief after crossing the hour mark. We were concerned when facing erratic network signals that constantly fluctuated and barely remained full in a number of places. We checked this by inserting the SIM cards into another device in the same areas to compare and there was a noticeable difference in the reception. For now, the intuitive Samsung Experience 9.5 is running on Android Oreo 8.1 and we hope to see Android Pie soon as gesture navigation was SEPTEMBER 2018 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today 73

sorely missed. RAM management was fine with more than half of it always free but the Sleep mode was a tad too aggressive in making the apps go to sleep. The old adage ‘two’s a company three’s a crowd’ suits Bixby to a T especially when we have two competent AI namely Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant a tap or voice command away. We can’t count the times its dedicated button was inadvertently pressed only for it interrupts and no option of disabling or reassigning made us frustrated. Sure, the interface has improved but not enough for it to disrupt our work. We loved listening to music and watching videos on the AKG tuned stereo speakers that are amply loud and clear. The bundled AKG earphones are just as wonderful for those not wanting to broadcast their songs to the public. A software-based implementation of Dolby Atmos helps boost the audio by giving it a wider soundstage. It’s nothing earth shattering but a decent enhancement that we opted to keep on. The jump to a 4000mAh battery works wonders to cater to the extreme user demographics by ensuring a full 74 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today SEPTEMBER 2018

charge will last all day in most scenarios within reason but don’t expect the same with heavy usage. Powering it up doesn’t take much time with Quick Charge but version 2.0 is a tad too old for our tastes with 4+ already out in the market. Those who also plan to buy the Galaxy Watch should invest in the separately sold Wireless Charger Duo that can charge both simultaneously. We suggest going for the higher end model if you want it to double as a storage device supporting up to 512GB microSD making it one of the first to offer 1TB in total. For all intents and purposes, 128GB will suffice for the majority.

Camera: old dog, AI tricks We were a bit sad to see the exact same cameras from the S9+ used here. That isn’t to slight it because it was amazing but we’ve come to expect more from the Note series that always paves its own path. To recap, there is a dual camera setup consisting of a 12MP lens with SuperSpeed Dual Pixel Autofocus (AF), f/1.5 / f/2.4 dual aperture and Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and a 12MP zoom

lens with f/2.4 aperture and OIS while the front has an 8MP AF with f/1.7 lens. What’s new is the AI software that analyses a scene and intelligently detects the subject matter. There are 20 categories ranging from but not limited to a person to animal to cityscape which is nice. With it, things like contrast, saturation and white balance are adjusted to give the snap some added oomph. We appreciated flaw detection popping up after a shot to inform us when the picture was taken is less than ideal like if the lens is smeared, a person has blinked or too much backlight is obstructing the photo. Daylight output is great as usual but it’s low light conditions where the Note9 shines and exploits its wide aperture and superior processing to the full giving minimal amount of noise. Manual mode will keep the pros happy providing them with controls over everything to fine tune to their delight. An update with the August 2018 security patch brought with it the option to shoot 0.2 or 0.4 seconds of slow-mo footage. The former is recorded at 960FPS and the latter is stuck to 480FPS requiring a very W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

steady grip on the device for optimal results. AR Emoji can turn your face into emojis and animate them but the results are nothing to brag about. Selfies get elevated with Selfie Focus that adds the right amount of depth and Wide Selfie works to capture a group of people together.

Security, DeX and the rest The holy trinity of the fingerprint, face unlock and iris scan are present to keep your data secure. The fingerprint sensor is fast and responsive but it could have been shifted further down to be ergonomic. Intelligent Scan combines iris scan and face unlock to open up in a number of conditions even in the dark where a number of scanners simply fail. There were times when it prompted us to hold the phone ‘more upright’ though but it was minimal. Samsung Knox adds another layer of security for extra peace of mind. Gone is the need of a DeX Pad with users able to connect to a Monitor with just a USB Type-C to HDMI connector to mirror the Note onto a larger screen. Mouse control takes some time getting used to as W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

directional orientation is slightly tricky but the on-screen keyboard works as intended. Existing Dex Pad owners shouldn’t fret as it can still be used to connect in external peripherals like a wired keyboard or mouse to emulate a true desktop. Notable things packed inside the box are a transparent protective cover that we recommend using as soon as possible, USB Type-C cable, USB Type-C to Type-A adapter that will be handy in many situations, AKG earphones, fast charger, separate tools for ejecting the SIM and S Pen tips, extra earbuds and S Pen tips. We’d have liked a DeX cable to be there as well. Conclusion An all-rounder with everything you’d ever want and then some, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 might not innovate but provides the best in what it does. For it to reach perfection, we hope to see quick software updates to iron out the niggles. In summation, there are no compromises to be had here and you get exactly what you pay for: a class-leading premium product.

VERDICT WE’RE IMPRESSED: S Pen, Display, Cameras, DeX without dock WE’D IMPROVE: Weight, Bixby, Older Quick Charge, Signal issue THE LAST WORD: The Galaxy Note9 is an evolution rather than a revolution but one that is unrivalled

F1 is fast, good looking and affordable WORDS KUNAL GANGAR iaomi has had an interesting year so far. Not only was the company recently listed on the stock exchange in Hong Kong, its Indian subsidiary rose to the top in the world’s second largest smartphone market. However, most of the phones that Xiaomi sells falls under the sub-Rs. 20,000 range. Sure, there’s Mi Mix 2 at `29,999 but there’s still a gap they need to fill. Enter Poco. Poco is Xiaomi’s sub-brand that will design and engineer their devices independently but also take advantage of Xiaomi’s massive supply chain and its after-sales network. The first device under the new sub-brand is F1 and we take a thorough look to see if it can live up to the hype. Xiaomi-branded phones, be it the Redmi or the Redmi Note series, they seem to follow a similar design pattern. But since Poco acts as a separate entity, F1 seems to break the mould for its maiden device.

X

Utilitarian design The Poco F1 does not boast a metal or glass body that most of the devices come these days with but the device sports 76 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today SEPTEMBER 2018

a polycarbonate back. We guess it was the cost that made Poco go with polycarbonate but the decision has its advantages, usability-wise. The phone does not feel slippery like its metal or glass counterpart and gives the phone a good grip in the hands. Another advantage is that polycarbonate is more durable in terms of scratches and falls than other materials, thus eliminating the need to slap a case at the back. However, Poco is still bundling a soft case with all the F1 phones. The Poco F1 is available three different colours - black, blue and red, and one special edition, which is our favourite. Called the Armoured Edition, the back panel of the phone is made from Kevlar material that is used in military and aviation industry. The front is dominated by a huge display with a notch housing various sensors and front camera just above it; dual cameras and fingerprint

sensor at the back; USB-C and speaker grille at the bottom; 3.5mm headphone jack at the top; power and +/- volume buttons on the right and a hybrid SIM slow on the left. Overall, the Poco F1’s unassuming design may not attract everyone’s attention but it’s practical and not bad to look or use.

State-of-the-art hardware and performance Let’s start with the display. The phone features a 6.18-inch FHD+ (2246x1080) display with an aspect ratio of 18.7:9 and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. We found the display to be good enough for daily use with crisp text and pictures with good legibility in sunlight, thanks to 500nit of brightness. It has a contrast ratio of 1500:1, supports reading mode to reduce display’s blue light emission and allows tweaking of colour temperature and contrast. Poco calls the F1 “Master of Speed” W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

Xiaomi Poco F1

and rightly so. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor with a clock speed of up to 2.8GHz and 6GB or 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and as you’d expect in this situation, the phone is fast. It handles most graphics demanding games and processing intensive apps with ease. The phone also features LiquidCool technology that helps to keep the SoC temperature in check to deliver sustained peak performance. In terms of storage, the phone comes with options of 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. For heavy users, there’s an option to expand storage further with a microSD card (up to 256GB). Security-wise, the phone allows unlocking the device conventionally via a PIN, a pattern or users can use the fingerprint sensor. F1 also has face unlock and is equipped with an infrared illuminator and an infrared camera that helps to unlock the device in pitch-dark scenarios, which we found to be a mixed bag. While the phone would unlock in a completely dark environment, there were instances where it would just not detect the face. The Poco F1 runs MIUI 9 based on Android Oreo but the biggest change is that the MIUI is optimised and tweaked. MIUI for Poco gains an app drawer that sorts out apps based on their category or icon colours, faster W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

security updates and a turbocharged engine that claims to improve app loading times. Poco has confirmed that the latest MIUI based on Android Pie will be released before the end of this year. The software, however, is not without its quirks. During our use with full-screen gestures, some apps didn’t correctly utilise the full display. There was another instance where the screen would go back to the previous app while the apps were updating in the background. However, there’s nothing that could not be fixed with a software update. Battery life is one of the biggest limitations for today’s smartphones but Poco F1’s 4000mAh battery is amazing. A day was easy to pass by without worrying about the battery but in our moderate use with about 5 hours of screen time, we got about 1.5 days on a single charge. And when you run out, there’s a Quick Charge 3.0 charger inside the sales package for a quick top up. On the camera front, the Poco F1 sports a dual camera set up at the back with a 12MP IMX363 sensor with f/1.9 aperture and 1.4-micron pixels and 5MP f/2.0 secondary sensor. The camera supports dual-pixel autofocus and AI mode. The result is better quality pictures with good details, even in low-light

and insanely fast autofocus. The AI mode helps to analyse different scenes (up to 206 across 25 categories) and nudges the user to adjust the picture settings for a better output. The phone takes decent bokeh shots in portrait mode and can record videos up to 4K with EIS and slow motion to take up to 1080p at 240fps. The 20MP selfie camera on the front takes advantage of Super Pixel technology that combines four pixels into one for improved selfies.

Conclusion Despite few software kinks and polycarbonate shell, the Poco F1 has everything going for itself. For a starting price of `20,999, you’re getting a value-for-money device, top-of-the-line hardware, good camera and an excellent battery life.

VERDICT WE’RE IMPRESSED Performance, Battery life WE’D IMPROVE Software THE LAST WORD You can’t get a better phone than Poco F1 at this price

onor has been consistently launching some interesting devices that offer an excellent price-performance ratio. The latest to join its portfolio is Honor Play that guarantees high-end hardware and software experience for an affordable price. Honor’s recent spate of launches has been glass, so it’s refreshing to see Honor Play adopting a metal design. Available in choices of black and blue, blue the metal ďŹ nish att the th back b k and d the glass front dominated by the display and thin bezels give the phone a premium look. The dual cameras along with the ash and ďŹ ngerprint sensor are placed at the back while a speaker, 3.5mm audio jack and USB-C port are placed at the bottom. The hybrid SIM slot is on the left and the power and volume buttons are on the right. Honor phones generally come with their in-house developed Kirin processors and Honor Play is no surprise. With 4GB RAM and agship SoC onboard, the Honor Play is great to use with smooth and stutter-free performance. Honor Play runs EMUI 8.2 (based on Android 8.1) and while it’s heavily customised, some of the features it brings are handy. For instance, it supports face unlock and keeps lock screen notiďŹ cations hidden until it is unlocked. Smart AI gallery classiďŹ es pictures and automatically segregates them depending on time, location, holiday, or occasions. The interesting thing, however, is the phone comes with GPU Turbo, which is Huawei/Honor’s solution to improve graphics eďŹƒciency while at the same time improve battery life. Currently, there are only a handful of games supporting GPU Turbo and PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) is one of them. We played PUBG on the device and found the overall performance to be good. The only drawback right now with GPU Turbo is that Honor has to work with developers to integrate GPU Turbo and the game cannot take advantage of the feature automatically. GPU Turbo will eventually be rolled out to other Honor devices in the coming months. The phone has a 6.3-inch FHD+ (1080x2340) display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The screen looks great with good colours and contrast. Users can even change the colour temperature and the resolution to HD+ to save battery life. Honor Play has a 16MP+2MP setup at the back and takes advantage of AI to recognise different objects in real time and while it does a good job in recognising them, the optimisations AI implements aren’t up to the mark. In most instances, we are better without AI. Pictures shot in daylight were good but the camera suffered in low-light scenarios. The camera quality is just about okay. The phone can capture videos to up to 4K and supports EIS. However, it works only if you shoot at Full HD or below. SelďŹ e-wise, the 16MP front-facing camera captures decent selďŹ es. All said and done, Honor Play looks great and delivers agship performance with good battery life but needs some work on the camera front.

Xiaomi Mi A2 The new Android One phone focuses on camera WORDS KUNAL GANGAR ast year’s Mi A1 may not have been a runaway success as Xiaomi would have liked but nonetheless, the Mi A1 was a good phone. They’ve now followed up with the aptly named Mi A2. The Mi A2 is a good-looking d l ki smartphone artphone with its metal unibody shell and a huge display but we found the phone to be a bit slippery. The smooth back along with a 7.3mm slim body made the phone difficult to hold. The large dual camera sensor also protrudes at the back. One workaround to both these issues is to use the case provided in the sales package. When it comes to port placements, the fingerprint sensor is placed at the back, USB-C at the bottom and infrared blaster at the top. Interestingly, 3.5mm headphone jack did not make the cut to the list of ports on the Mi A2. The Mi A2 features a 5.99-inch Full HD+ (2160x1080) display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and contrast ratio of 1500:1. We found the display to be okay in terms of brightness and the ability to adjust colour temperature. The only two things the display supports is adaptive brightness and night light. There’s ambient display support as well that lights up the screen when a new notification comes in. Handling the phone’s processing tasks is Snapdragon 660 chip that aims to bring flagship-level performance to a mid-range device. Coupled with 4GB RAM, the phone works fairly well with no obvious signs of lags or stutter. There’s 64GB of internal memory with no provision to expand it further via a microSD card. Xiaomi will soon release a 128GB variant though. Just like the A1, the A2 runs stock Android OS with few visible changes like pre-installed Mi apps and camera interface. The Mi A2 runs Android Oreo but will soon get the latest Android Pie as the software updates are handled by Xiaomi. The 3010mAh battery with moderate use lasts a day but comes with Quick Charge 4+ support and with a compatible charger, allows the phone to charge quickly. The Mi A2 has a 12MP primary sensor with a f/1.75 aperture and a 20MP secondary supporting Pixel binning tech at the back and it has been a delight to use them. There’s even a Circadian Mode that automatically matches the light to the time of day by adjusting brightness and warmth as the sun rises and sets. The smart bulb can be controlled with voice via Amazon Alexa, which can be done by activating the free Kasa skill available in the Skills menu of the Alexa app or via Google Assistant. The 1.32-inch dual layer display is protected by the large bezel with three physical buttons on the right, each separated with a button guard. The top ‘Tool’ button offers various functions like the compass, barometer, and the altimeter. In the centre, is a dedicated Android Wear button used for navigation and at the bottom is the location tracking app. Despite the design, the display is not circular, akin to the Moto 360’s “shelf” bottom. The touch response on the smartwatch is fast and smooth. But F20’s trick up its sleeve is the dual layer display. While the time is displayed on the monochrome LCD, measurement data and apps are shown on the colour display that helps with the visibility (but not much when we tried out) and improved battery life. We took the smartwatch for a hike to the outskirts and the results were convincing. The compass worked well and barometer proved to be a lifesaver with the accurate weather forecast and rain precipitation data. The built-in GPS worked fine but navigating was a tad cumbersome when we tried to pinpoint a location. With the varied gradient changes, the altimeter provided near-to-perfect altitude data. The watch runs on Wear OS 2, which means, you’ve got access to Google Assistant, phone notifications and all the bells and whistles associated with Google’s smartwatch OS. The F20 with its military grade materials and its 50mm water resistance capability is tough and functional. If you are an outdoor person or an adventure junkie looking for a smartwatch, F20 is a compelling buy. For the rest of us, there are more capable watches out there.

WIRELESS PROJECTION

Sony MP-CD1 Mobile projection made easy WORDS KUNAL GANGAR ew companies have tried their hand in mobile projection in the last few years. While companies like Samsung and a few others preferred to concoct a smartphone with a built-in projector, Motorola went ahead and created a mod for its Moto Z phones. Sony, on the other hand, reckons a dedicated accessory is an answer to mobile projection. The MP-CD1 features a sleek metal design and a black slipcase for carrying it around. The focus slider is placed on the left side while the ports - USB-C, USB-A out, HDMI and 3.5mm audio jack on the right side. There’s a fan to take care of heat dissipation underneath the unit and a tripod socket. MP-CD1’s design is practical and has been clearly designed with portability in mind. During our use, we found MP-CD1’s performance to be okay. While ease of use is one of the strong points of MP-CD1 and its brightness, the projector lacks in terms of resolution. It uses Texas Instrument’s DLP IntelliBright technology that improves the brightness to up to ANSI 105 lumens but this brightness comes at the expense of resolution. The projector supports a maximum resolution

82 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today SEPTEMBER 2018

of (854x480) and the low resolution is obvious when you expand the viewing area (it supports up to 120-inches at a projection distance of 3.45m). The projector comes with a 1W speaker, which is weak in most occasions but the device comes with a 3.5mm audio jack to connect headphones or external speakers. Auto keystone helps to correct the projection even when the device is projecting on a surface at an angle. The built-in 5000mAh battery is good enough to last a single movie. Do note, you can’t wirelessly project from a mobile device. You need a Chromecast-like device and while it’s not advertised, Sony bundles a third-party casting device that makes projecting YouTube, Netflix, etc, wirelessly possible from the smartphone. MP-CD1 scores high on the ease of use, portability, and lamp brightness. But the projector suffers from the weak audio output and low resolution. If portability is the top-most priority, MP-CD1 won’t disappoint but if projection quality is what you’re looking for, you might want to look elsewhere.

VERDICT WE’RE IMPRESSED Design, Ease of use, Brightness WE’D IMPROVE Speaker THE LAST WORD MP-CD1 is compelling as a portable projection device but falls short in resolution

THE X FACTOR

HP Omen X When money is not a barrier WORDS ANKUSH MAHAJAN

P has been making all the right moves lately with regards to its gaming line-up and the Omen X is the perfect example of that. While it’s technically a laptop, treating it like a portable desktop is more fitting taking into consideration the massive heft of the machine. Even the power supply is massive but very stylish. The excellent build quality is evident as there are no creaks or discernible bending when pressure is applied. The mix of metal and plastic gives hint at the thought that went into the construction. A nice touch is the transparent acrylic window at the bottom offering a glimpse at the components within. Inside this glorious beast is an overclockable Intel Core i7-7820HK, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080, 32GB DDR4 memory, 2TB SSD and 1TB HDD. The AP047 model we’ve received for review is the top end configuration if it wasn’t evident enough although we wonder why the newer 8th Generation Intel processor was skipped. The 17.3” Full HD display with Nvidia GYSNC makes great use of the IPS panel and 144Hz refresh rate that makes even daily navigation feel smooth. You’ll notice two curved hinges attached to the middle of the screen bezel having the effect of a bulging out body. This is partly done for dissipating the main heat from the large vents at the back and smaller ones at the edges. Using an external mouse becomes a problem as the heat from the sides will hit your hand making it unbearable after a certain point in time. The port placement is spread across all the sides allowing for easy and convenient access. The RGB mechanical keyboard is a sight to behold. It is lit up and typing is a pleasure with a satisfying amount of travel and resistance. An oddity was the ridiculously long right control bar. Next to it lies the touchpad with fairly accurate tracking and separate mouse keys that could have been better. The Bang&Olufsen speakers were adequate for listening to music or watching videos but it is recommended to use the external audio equipment. We played a variety of games as well as ran benchmarks in them and not a single game went below 60FPS with all settings at maximum. This includes the expensive shadow and Nvidia specific toggles that tank the framerate more often than not. Do note that we kept anti-aliasing at FXAA or at most 2x MSAA because at this screen size applying too much gives minimal gains at the cost of worse performance. Our selection included Quantum Break, Assassins Creed: Origins, Far Cry V, Final Fantasy XV, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Just Cause 3. As long as you are forgiving of the small quirks, the Omen X should be at the top of your list as the ultimate desktop replacement.

Retro

ISSUE 38 8/ SEPTEMBER 2018

T3 3 India as a magazine/ezine rightly focuses on products that are new and under development. This, of course, does not suggest or imply that everything old is bad and outdated. The pace at which technology moves, demands that we cover all product developments for our readers. In few cases, this means going back to the

past. Look at the worldwide revival of turntables. Only 15 years ago, the turntable was consigned to the dustbin. Today, pressing plants are hard pressed to meet the demand. The area where retro is most in demand is music – both Western and Indian, and T3 3 India seeks to address this gap. We hope you enjoy this section.

Aretha’s father CL Franklin was a Baptist preacher in Detroit and the gospel singing she heard in his church was her musical foundation. Amongst her acclaimed albums are ‘I never loved a man the way I love you’, ‘Lady soul’, ‘Young, gifted and black’, ‘Amazing grace’ and ‘Sparkle’. Although her career was revived in the 1980s, her best period was in the 60s & early 70s.

88 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today SEPTEMBER 2018

Aretha won 18 Grammy awards and has sold more than 75 million records worldwide. Rolling Stone magazine ranked her as the number one greatest singer of all time. Aretha Franklin‘s music lives on.
