Welcome to our September issue!
W
hen you move into a new property you’re suddenly faced with lots of decisions; and I’m speaking from experience here, as after many twists and turns in the process I’ve finally moved into my new home. While it’s great to have a blank (or in my case a not-so-blank canvas) to work with, Editor it does come with numerous dilemmas; ‘what colours should I go for in the living room?’, ‘do I change the flooring or live with it for now?’, and ‘do I buy that sideboard?’ are just some of my current woes! In short, here are lots of choices to be made; which is really wonderful but also a tad daunting. Whether you’ve been in your home forever or just moved into a new place, then you’re in luck as we have three great features this month that will help. Welcome
to my home A bit about me
I’m Sophie Simms, I work in theatre and I live with my rescue cat Brian.
A bad leak from the upstairs flat meant the whole room had to be stripped and redone, with a new ceiling, too. Sophie also removed the door between the hallway and living room to let the light through and had the same flooring laid throughout to keep it looking cohesive. ‘I had my heart set on stripped oak flooring but it wasn’t in my budget, or particularly practical for the space, so I ended up choosing laminate from Wickes – it’s come a long way from the shiny stuff that was around in the 90s and it looks just like authentic wood.’
Where I live
My home is a twobedroom flat in Catford, south-east London, built in the 1900s. I bought it and moved in in May 2015.
What I wanted to change
It needed updating throughout and I wanted to add lots of colour as it was all painted a really bland magnolia.
How I made it my own
I injected lots of bright colour into the place. It makes me feel genuinely happy when I look at what I’ve achieved. It’s light, fresh and super fun!
My favourite part
Definitely the kitchen. I’ve had so many chats, laughs and heart-to-hearts at this kitchen table, and it’s nice being able to have my friends here while I’m cooking.
Sophie’s picked up her compact sofa from a vintage shop in Crystal Palace. ‘My film-style lamp was being thrown out of a theatre I used to work at. I’ve made a bit of a habit of giving unwanted furniture a loving home!’

The kitchen is Sophie’s favourite room. Wall cabinets were removed and replaced with open shelving, to keep it feeling light. She upcycled a pine table from Ikea with Dutch oil to seal it and painted the legs white. ‘Workspace is super important to me as I own a small home baking business, @miss. simms on Instagram, and run an annual charity bake event called the West End Bake Off. ‘
‘My style? Colour, colour and more colour!’
My story ...
I’d been renting a place in Catford for two years and really liked the area, so when it came time to buy a property I knew I didn’t want to move too far. I found this flat at auction with some guidance from my dad who owns a property development and rental company. Right from the start I felt it had a good vibe, although it needed a fair bit of work. It was painted magnolia throughout by the previous owners, and the living room floor was uneven concrete, plus there were some badly damaged floorboards in the bedrooms and hallway and lots of other little niggles. Not only that, but a leak from the upstairs flat into my living room meant the entire space had to be stripped back and re-rendered. Despite it all, I loved the fact that I had my own little garden and that it had a bath – they were my two must-haves! I did all the painting myself – although I did occasionally bribe my mum and sister (usually with cake) to pick up a roller! The whole flat took quite a long time to be fully finished as I did it gradually over a period of time, but it’s meant that I’ve had plenty of time to think about how I wanted it to look. I’ve decorated in white, but injected lots of bright colours with my personal belongings and the flat has a mix of vintage items, hand-me-downs and modern furniture pieces. I’m so proud – it was a pretty big feat for a single girl to take on, but it’s gone so well I think I’m just about ready for the next challenge! 16 homestylemag.co.uk
The kitchen chairs were left in a property that Sophie’s dad was renovating, so she took a few cans of spray paint to them to brighten them up. To keep the kitchen cost effective, she kept the cabinets and simply replaced the cupboard doors and worktop
Good idea
Disguise an ugly feature, such as a boiler, by taping artwork to the front and using the top as a shelf
Sophie’s colourful crockery and kitchen accessories are displayed on open shelving, which makes it easy to access and ties in with her rainbow-coloured scheme. The mugs and pasta bowls are all from Le Creuset. Screw hooks are used to hang colourful mugs from.
Even the most practical items, such as a dish rack, bowls and utensils, can help continue the colour theme, and these are really affordable ways to carry through a look. You may also notice that Sophie doesn’t have a microwave – as a baker, she’d rather have room for cooling racks full of freshly baked goodies!

Inspiring homes Sophie’s ladder rail is home to her tea towel collection. ‘All of these are gifts, so it’s really lovely to be able to display them somewhere where they don’t get grubby. There’s one that has a whole recipe for a Bakewell tart on it, which comes in handy for my baking!’ A favourite is by local designer Hazel Nicholls.
Sophie uses every ledge, shelf and windowsill as extra places to display colourful postcards and objects she’s picked up. The Yay postcard is from Scribbler. ‘I have a bit of a thing for moving things around, so there’s been plenty of that over the years.’

bargain at an auction but it pays to know what to look for before you go. Contact the auction house and request their catalogue, so you can see what properties catch your eye.
l View any of the houses
you’re interested in and do thorough research by talking to the neighbours and local estate agents.
l Carry out the usual
property and land searches and read the conditions printed in the catalogue.
l Lastly, plan ahead and
have a mortgage in principle before buying. You’ll need to have a 10% deposit ready for payment on the day of the auction when the contracts are signed, and access to the remaining amount within 28 days.

Sophie asked her carpenter friend to build floor-to-ceiling wardrobes in her bedroom and saved money by painting them herself and adding colourful door knobs from Sass & Belle. Spare bedroom
‘A lick of paint, new carpet, and a new double-glazed window was enough to freshen up the spare bedroom. It’s a relatively small space so I’ve kept the furniture to a minimum. I have an old vintage wardrobe that I’d love to put in here – it needs jazzing up a bit with some brightly coloured spray paint, when I can find the time.’
What I learned... Master bedroom
‘I’ve always had cheap freestanding wardrobes before, but with this flat having high ceilings I wanted to use the space wisely. A friend runs his own carpentry design business, Mackinlay Designs. He’s local to me so he came in, measured up and I had brilliant floor-toceiling wardrobes within the week! I like to make a feature out of the things I own, for instance the bookcase in my bedroom looks fun as I’ve colour coordinated all my books – it’s really satisfying to look at!’
l Take your time when you’re decorating a whole property. If I’d have bustled in and done everything I thought I wanted straight away it would have ended up looking very different and not been the same space. l Make sacrifices – it can’t all be perfect, especially if you’re on a budget. You’d be amazed at what you learn to love, and there are also some really good budget options. l Be you – it sounds cheesy but if you try to copy images seen on Instagram, in magazines or online, it will never feel like you’ve put your own stamp on the place. Often the back of the letter is just as interesting as the front. Leave some visible gaps so that you can see the wire – it adds a really cool, industrial edge.

Cut two lengths of wire: one 120cm, one 82cm. Take the longer length and bend it into a circle, overlapping the ends by 5cm. Wind a few small pieces of masking tape around the join to secure. Bend the second length of wire into a long sausage shape. It needs to fit within the outer circle. Secure the overlap using small pieces of tape. Position in the centre using more tape. Cut strips of paper of varying lengths (ours were between 9cm and 16cm). Working with the wired letter face down, thread a strip of paper behind the inner and outer sections of wire on one side of the letter. Dot glue on each end and fold these over the wire, sticking them to the back of the strip. Trim off any corners or edges that do not align properly. Repeat on the other side. Once you have completed your design, either remove the small bits of masking tape holding the two wire sections together, or stick a piece of patterned paper over each of them.

Use silver leaf to create a distressed look
Silver service Shine on with this industrial-
style silver leaf alternative. Download and print the letter from homestylemag.co.uk. Transfer it onto thick card and use a craft knife to cut out. Lightly spray a section of the letter with adhesive. Place a sheet of silver leaf face down on the sprayed area, rub down, and then remove the backing. Repeat, and once the letter
is covered, rub over parts of the surface with a new kitchen scourer to give a distressed finish. Cut 4cm wide lengths of card for the edges. Align with the letter and secure using small pieces of masking tape. Continue joining strips. Make sure all the tape is on the outside and when you add a new strip of card butt the two edges together neatly. To complete, cover with strips of coloured paper. September 2018 25

We were fortunate that the house was structurally fine but the décor was not to our taste at all.
How I made it my own
I think our furniture choices really make our home unique. We like finding old vintage treasures and mixing them together with new, quality pieces.
My favourite part
This is hard as I love so many different parts of the house. Probably our bathroom. I adore the brass shower that we lovingly picked out, which we paired with white metro tiles.

Living room
‘When redecorating this room, I wanted it to have a real wow-factor with lots of golds, velvet and statement pieces. I love Mid-Century modern interiors, but wanted to bring in a slight industrial feel to tie in with the rest of the house. My favourite part is the wall our velvet Made sofa lives on, I painted it with Farrow & Ball’s Pigeon. I then hung a large gold mirror above.’

My story...
We decided we wanted to buy a house together shortly after our engagement as we aimed to be on the property ladder before planning a wedding. We started looking in January 2014 and after seeing around 15 houses, we fell in love with this one. Luckily, our offer was accepted and we moved in at the end of May 2014. So all in all, it was quite a quick process. We were lucky that the house was structurally in good condition and we didn’t have to make any big changes. The kitchen was new and a functional style so for the first two years, while we were planning our wedding and getting married, we didn’t do much to the house apart from a little painting. In January 2017, we started to go through each room, renovating it to our own taste. We like lots of different themes such as industrial, Scandi, Mid-Century and even touches of boho. So meshing all these styles together is how we are making this our dream home. We started with the bathroom, adding in lots of mixed metals exposed shelving, earthy blues, monochrome floor tiles and fresh white metro tiles. We quite like earthy colours, with a mix of dark and light. So, we slowly have been bringing these colours into each room in the forms of blues, greens and greys to give them a rich and inviting feel. After deciding on colour schemes, we have carefully picked pieces, which show off our personalities. Even though we love lots of different styles, we have always kept an overarching theme of industrial and raw furniture and accessories throughout. Kitchen
‘When we moved in, we were lucky enough to have a kitchen we didn’t have to do much work to. If we had loads of money, we probably would change this, as it’s not completely our style, but it is a lovely, bright space, which I have dressed up with things we love. However, I have been able to add our style in the dining area. We brought in this dark navy Farrow & Ball Hague Blue wall, and painted the rest of the space a light grey. It was scary when we first put the colour up but now we wouldn’t want it any other way.’ Emma has dressed her store cabinet with a stack of rustic looking copper pans, which tie in with the colour of her upcycled dining chairs. A couple of wooden chopping board, jars and a basket fruit bowl complete the look. It’s also really useful for extra surface space when you’re whipping up a meal for lots of dinner guests.
‘The blue splashback behind the hob was here when we moved in and is very handy for cleaning after cooking,’ says Emma. ‘Our statement whale chopping board was picked up from HomeSense and is one of my favourite touches in the house – he’s just such a joy!’

‘When designing this space, I aimed to create a Scandinavian sanctuary – somewhere to totally shut off from the hustle and bustle of life. I kept the walls white, but customised them with a collection of relaxing prints. One of the biggest changes to the room was ripping up the old carpet and restoring the original floorboards by hand. I decided to keep these natural, to reflect the Scandi style. I consciously brought in black to the room via the bed and lighting to complement and contrast with the white walls.’

‘This room is quite small, so we wanted to make it feel brighter and more spacious. Going for an industrial feel, we brought in a large amount of mixed metallics such as a brass shower, copper tap and a cast iron vintage-style radiator, which has to be my favourite feature.’
What I learned...
l Don’t rush into buying everything when you first move in! You may get something you later regret. You need to learn more about your space first by living in it. l Plan, plan and plan again! Get together a quick moodboard of how you want the room to look with colours, textiles and furniture. You will then find it much easier when shopping not to get distracted and impulse buy something that doesn’t go. l But, if you truly love something, just buy it! It’s your home and your place to show who you are as a person. I’ve learned that it will all come together in the end. Turn to page 128 for stockist details

First, make sure the cabinet doors are clean, dry and free of dust. Paint the exterior of the cabinet if desired, prior to applying the self-adhesive film. Measure the height of the doors and draw a horizontal pencil line at the halfway point, indicating the join. Roll out the plastic on your work surface with the pattern facing up. Measure and cut pieces to fit each of the four sections of the doors with the wood block running diagonally, creating the parquet effect. Depending on the size of your chosen cabinet you may need to build up each section with more than one piece of the film. Make sure to conceal the joins. Peel off the backing paper and neatly stick each piece to the doors, smoothing out any air bubbles with your fingers as you work. Carefully trim any overhanging edges with a craft knife.

Cabinet meeting If you’re more artsy, give this upcycled chest of drawers a try. While we love Emma’s glamorous furniture, we also adore a painterly look. This plain bedside cabinet has been given a fun makeover using Annie Sloan chalk paints and detail brushes. Inspired by the work of Josef Frank, an Austrian architect and designer, Annie created a bold, 36 homestylemag.co.uk
folk-style pattern. To try it yourself, firstly give the cabinet a basecoat in Giverny using a flat brush for a smooth finish. Then add the pattern using a range of brushes and an earthy palette of chalk paint in Primer Red, Burgundy, Scandinavian Pink, Giverny, Arles, Antibes Green and Florence. The piece was then finished with clear wax to protect it. Go on, you don’t have to be an artist to give it a try!

‘For us, the living area is all about comfort and relaxation, hence the large L-shaped sofa being a showstopper in this space. The previous owners had big, cumbersome shelving next to the fireplace which we replaced with contemporary String shelves to add a design element and let the walls breathe. I would describe my style as playful and fresh, with hints of modern Scandi.’

My story...
Richard and I were keen to stay in north London as we love the village vibe and all the green open spaces, as well as it being home to some of our favourite independent shops and cafés. When we first saw the flat, we were both taken aback at how much bigger it is inside than it appears from the street and the fact it felt wide and not narrow like most typical Victorian houses. I loved the quirky layout of the rooms and, fortunately, the downstairs had already been extended by the previous owners to create the open-plan living and dining space. Having said that, we did have to make a sacrifice with the kitchen as it doesn’t have a direct window so this was certainly our biggest compromise, but something we agreed we could learn to live with. On getting the keys, we didn’t waste any time and moved into a nearby Airbnb to save our sanity while the builders were in! Both the main bathroom and the en suite were completely replaced and updated, as well as the kitchen. We also had lots of carpentry work done around the flat – ripping out old, bulky units and putting in new bespoke storage that worked better in the space – as well as replacing all the existing sash windows as they were rotten. Running my business from home means I needed somewhere to store products and prepare orders to be posted out to customers, so having the studio at the end of the garden was a huge bonus when we bought the house. It’s a place I go to for inspiration – I’m at my happiest in there. The most exciting part was redecorating every room so the whole house now reflects us and has a happy and inviting vibe – we’ve put our stamp on everything! 40 homestylemag.co.uk

Dining area
‘Although I’m a big fan of colour, I’m also drawn to a monochrome palette, so our dining space combines a bit of both. I chose a modern white dining table so it didn’t overpower the room. The black chairs, a mixture of John Lewis and Ikea offer a stylish contrast. I wanted to keep this area fairly neutral so as not to clash or compete with the décor in the living space, yet the continuation of the oak flooring and white walls still lets it flow as one. Fresh flowers and a colourful fruit bowl finishes it off.’
Making
Mixing and matching different designs of dining chairs gives Huma’s styling an eclectic edge, while their united colourway allows them to sit comfortably together. The monochrome palette of the dining area offers a pared back look.

Decorating a narrow hallway can be challenging, but Huma has added character by painting some of the doorframes in a punchy yellow shade to draw attention to the architectural details. She has also added multi-coloured coat hooks to the wall for added interest, as well as a quirky shelving unit that houses necessities, such as house keys.

Expert advice
How to decorate a room with limited daylight l If, like Huma, a space in your
house poses the challenge of having very little or no daylight coming into the room, start off by keeping the walls light in colour to help make the space feel bigger. However, don’t feel limited to white, bright colours can work just as well.
l Complete the look by
introducing pops of colour through bright accessories to add vibrancy. Natural light is great, but adding colour is just as important to complete a space.
l If the only source of daylight
coming into a room is blocked by a door, position a large mirror to reflect the light and fully bounce it around the room.
l Avoid filling the room with
too much furniture, as this will reduce floor space, which is important for maintaining a feeling of openness. When furniture is required, such as storage in a bedroom, choose white rather than dark woods and opt for glossy finishes to help reflect the light. September 2018 43

‘Richard and I wanted to keep our bedroom a calm and relatively neutral space compared to the rest of the house, so we’ve chosen a minimalist look that we can add colour to with accessories and artwork. Having only a small window in this basement room meant we decided to keep the walls bright white and avoid too much bulky furniture which could have made it feel enclosed and cramped. The light oak flooring was already installed when we moved in, and it adds to the Scandi-inspired feel.’

What I learned...
l It’s worth taking your time on the finishing touches like wallpaper and artwork as this is what makes every home unique. I didn’t want to put things up for the sake of it, only things I really loved. l Don’t let builders rush you into making decisions. I made mistakes when it came to choosing the light fittings and ended up with ones I didn’t like and had to change. l Living in a building site is stressful so I would recommend moving out to a nearby Airbnb if budget allows. Even if it’s just for a few weeks while the bulk of the work is done, I found it was a huge relief. Turn to page 128 for stockist details

Painted fruit bowl

Lightly draw a simple diamond and spot pattern around the outside of the bowl with a white chinagraph pencil. Next, paint the diamond shapes with turquoise ceramic paint using sweeping brushstrokes and leave to thoroughly dry. When the blue diamonds are dry, paint the top and bottom rim of the bowl in yellow. Don’t worry about being too neat, an imperfect look is what you’re aiming for with this style of brushwork. Paint the middle of the diamonds yellow as well, then leave to dry again. Finally, paint the centre spots of the blue diamonds with orange. Complete the design by painting a mix of turquoise, dark blue and orange spots, working from the top down and leave to dry. The colours can also be mixed if you wish. Marabu porcelain paints don’t require oven fixing, so your bowl will be touch dry after 30 minutes but will then require around three days to properly cure and set onto the surface of the china.
Top Tip Once the porcelain paint has ‘cured’ onto the surface, which is around three days, your bowl can withstand dishwasher washes.

Where I live
I live in a detached four-bedroom property in Wigan. We moved here in 2017.
What I wanted to change
The property had been well looked after so it initially just required cosmetic work, although we knew we wanted to renovate the kitchen.
How I made it my own
I painted the walls white to create a calm space, and then gradually started adding colour, texture and personality.
My favourite part
I adore our kitchen and dining area. It’s such a great family space. We love to entertain and have the doors wide open.

‘We chose an Ikea kitchen from their Bodbyn range, it’s a good quality budget option. Also the units are all a standard size, so thinking long term, if I ever want to update the space I can just change the cupboard and drawer fronts. I went for a bank of square cupboards for our island, as it’s nice to have things out of sight. For contrast and practicality, I decided to go for different handles for the top cupboards and bottom units.’

My story...
Moving here was the smoothest operation I’ve known, although it did help that it was my motherin-law’s old home. Our previous place was so tiny I sometimes wonder how we ever managed, so when I fell pregnant with our second child it felt like the right time to move. I had a light bulb moment when Mike’s parents decided to sell up and move to Spain. I knew the house had a lot of potential with a large garden, so it seemed a good decision to offer to buy it. It had been really well maintained over the years so we only needed to put our stamp on it. My mother-in-law likes bright colours and had painted some walls red, and I did feel bad painting over them all straightaway, but luckily she’s very easy going so it wasn’t a problem. We knew we wanted to install a new kitchen and add a dining area so we knocked down what was a conservatory and Mike suggested French doors to the outside. He runs a window company and has lots of trade contacts, so we got much of the work done as a favour which meant renovating the space cost us next to nothing. We started work in November by immediately knocking through to the outside for the bi-folds, but with only wood to keep the rain out it was freezing. I was determined to get in for Christmas and my dad, who is a plumber and really handy, helped out on decorating tasks, so thankfully we finished just in time. There are still areas of the house that need doing up, but I’m really happy with what we’ve achieved so far. It’s a great space for our family as well as for entertaining, and now it’s pretty much complete, it really feels like home. I just love it here! 52 homestylemag.co.uk

Inspiring homes ‘I love the illustration of the lady in the gold frame and that was the starting point for the gallery wall. Everything else fitted around this, though I did plot out the pictures first and move them around a bit until they worked well together. This was a really fun project to do, especially adding the 3D elements, such as the miniature stag head and planters, which I think takes the wall from looking ordinary to inspiring,’ says Amy. ‘I love a good upcycle and hate paying a lot for furniture so when I spotted this cabinet in a second-hand shop, I knew that I could turn it into something amazing with some TLC.’
Living room
‘The living room is the cosiest place in the house. I’ve been much more creative in this space, trying out ideas that I see on social media, and although it’s a bit of a mash-up of styles, I think it works really well. The plank wall is saved from looking too rustic by adding the wall lights and modern prints. Our tan leather Valentino sofa from Sofology really takes centre stage in this room, and I think it complements the dark blue Victorian Dusk by Valspar wall beautifully.’

‘As my business took off I needed more room to work from and to store my fabrics. We have an off-street parking space at the front of the house so it made sense to convert the garage into my office. ‘The Dock Blue by Little Green wall complements the blush pink styling in our bedroom. I was initially drawn to the Rocco detail on the front of these bedside drawers from Dunelm and I love the symmetry they create with the bedside lamps. The row of pictures adds a bit of interest above the bed. I like to cosy it up with different throws and cushions to give the room a more sumptuous feel, which I think it needs, since we have no carpet or rugs on the floor. The bed frame is the Leirvik from Ikea and at £89 it was a bargain.’

What I learned...
l Rather than just buying something new, have a think about how to find or make a cheaper version. I’ve saved a fortune by crafting some things myself. l You can save yourself a lot of money by bringing in tradespeople separately rather then getting one company to do the whole job. Always haggle and if you have friends in the trade, offer to do a job swap.

Sand the pine shelves then coat them with varnish or paint before gluing each length onto the copper pipe frame.

Cut the copper pipe into four 40cm lengths and 10 x 18cm pieces. Place the four longer pieces on your work surface and fix a copper elbow to each end with glue. Leave to dry. Attach four of the shorter pieces to the open ends of the elbows, and glue in place. Allow to dry. Take two of the now C-shaped sections and lay on your work surface with the open ends of the pipes facing. Connect with a copper tee and glue in place. Repeat with the other two sections to create the unit sides. Connect the sides by fixing the last two 18cm pieces of copper pipe between the open ends of the tees. To complete, glue lengths of pine shelves between the copper frame.

Copper load Display your accessories on a copper pipe stand. This creative idea offers a rustic and unique way to store jewellery. To make, push two 15cm copper pipes into two opposing ends of a tee, then place stop ends on the two arms. adapter (the base of the display). Once happy with how the pieces fit together, put superglue inside each end cap and tee to secure, if necessary. Screw a floor flange into the centre of a sanded wood block using wood screws. Then screw the base of the copper jewellery display into this. The possibilities of vinyl are endless! Whether you want to achieve the look of tiles, wood or a more unique pattern such as terrazzo – vinyl covers it all. One key thing to note is that vinyl requires a very smooth surface in order for it to lay flat and without imperfections. It goes without saying that vinyl isn’t going to be as hardwearing as real wood or natural tiles, however it’s a great option for those on a budget who want to switch up their current flooring. Preparation is key. You should store your vinyl loosely rolled in the room you’re laying it for at least 24 hours so it acclimatises to the condition of the room. Another thing to note is that when it comes to laying your vinyl, if you’re taking on the project yourself, it’s best to use a single sheet as it creates a neater finish and prevents any wear that might occur on the edges and seams.

If the room is long and narrow with windows placed vertically, you will have to choose what you feel is more important to accentuate – the shape or light. Be savvy with your flooring to create the illusion of more space.
RESTORING FLOORBOARDS
Sometimes we neglect the original flooring that we are blessed with in our homes. With a good dose of TLC, original floorboards can be as good as new. Give them a good sand down then use wood filler to fill in any gaps. An electric sander may be required if they are heavily varnished. We love the idea of whitewashing floorboards – just mix two parts emulsion with one part water and test on a piece of wood, don’t be too precious with it, as this adds to the distressed look.

If you’ve got your heart set on wood flooring, you’ll have to make the decision between solid and engineered wood. In simple terms, the solid variety is made up of pure wood whereas engineered flooring is constructed of layers of plywood that are formed together with a final layer of real wood on top, to make it appear solid. Engineered wood is slightly cheaper but isn’t as hardwearing. When you’re planning your new wood floor, make sure to get a professional to check the moisture levels in the foundations below. The reading shouldn’t exceed 3% and if it’s on the border it would be a safer option to opt for engineered wood over solid.

Grout is not only the glue that sticks the tiles together, but it’s what pulls the look together too. Using different coloured grout can change the overall appearance of a scheme. For example, using a grey grout will add an industrial edge to your flooring. If you want to achieve a clean and fresh look then white is the way to go. Too harsh? Then why not opt for an off-white that will warm up a space? Remember, only grout small areas at a time as it dries quickly!

It’s important to research beforehand how you want your tiles to be laid. The trendsetters amongst us might be drawn to a herringbone formation, which is where oblong or metro tiles are placed to create a chevron effect. Or, how about a basketweave formation? Where tiles are positioned next to each other in a block and then repeated in the opposite direction. Whether or not you want to give a unique layout a go in your home, it’s vital that you thoroughly measure your floor space before you make your order and get the adhesive out!

Use wallpaper to revamp a cabinet in need of a serious injection of style. This project can be completed in just an afternoon If you live in a rented property, then adding pattern to your walls isn’t always an option. So do it through your furniture instead with this easy but fun upcycling idea, using your favourite wallpaper.

Q Old chest of drawers Q Screwdriver Q Sandpaper Q White spirit Q Wallpaper off-cuts Q Primer, if required Q Paintbrush Q Eggshell or gloss paint Q Pencil, ruler and eraser Q Scissors or craft knife Q Foam brush Q Strong white craft glue, such as PVA Q Credit card Q Thin skewer Q Electric drill (optional) Q New handles (optional)

Remove all the drawers from the chest, unscrew the handles and give the carcass and fronts a good sanding. Brush off all the sawdust, then wipe the carcass and drawers using a cloth and white spirit. Allow to dry. Meanwhile, unroll the wallpaper, turn it over and then roll it up again gently to flatten it. Paint the carcass in your chosen colour. If it’s solid wood, coat it first with some oil-based primer, then paint it with either eggshell or gloss. If the carcass is melamine or veneer, you will need to use a specialist primer, or try a chalk-based paint, which will adhere to the surface without the need for any prep. Apply a second coat if required. Lay the wallpaper pattern-side up on a table. Place your first drawer front face down on top of this, positioning it where you want the pattern to be positioned. Lightly draw around the edges. Repeat with each drawer front. If they are all the same size, you can use the same measurements.

Trim off the wallpaper from the remainder of the roll. Cut out each paper drawer front using sharp scissors or a craft knife and ruler. If any pencil lines are still visible, rub these out at this stage. Take your first drawer front and, using a foam brush, coat it with a thin layer of craft glue. If your chosen glue is thick, dilute it with a little water until it is easy to spread. Pay special attention to the edges and corners. Position the wallpaper in place, carefully pushing out any bubbles with a credit card to ensure a smooth result. Wipe off any excess. Leave the paper to dry and repeat with the other drawers. Cut off any excess paper protruding from the drawer edges using a craft knife. For extra durability, apply another thin layer of craft glue to each drawer front with a foam brush, and leave to dry. Use a thin skewer to help you locate the original screw holes in each drawer front, then add the handles back on. Alternatively, if you are using a different type, make some new holes first using a drill.

I completely revamped my dining room for under £500! Sian Jones transformed her dining room into a fun and practical space with a lively tropical vibe

When we first moved here, this room was more of a lounge, which didn’t really work for us, as it’s just off the kitchen. The walls were yellow and peach, and the flooring was a dark beige, so it all felt gloomy and uninviting.

Hi, I’m Sian Jones. I live with my partner Elliot, and our three children, in a three-bedroom Victorian terrace in Taunton, Somerset.
Converting it into a proper dining room makes much better use of the space. I decided to completely redecorate starting with a brilliant palm leaf wallpaper which really inspired me, as I’m a huge fan of houseplants. I love dark tones and bright pops of colour, so I mixed that in and came up with a super fun and vibrant look. I’ve upcycled lots of my existing furniture, and added some easy and inexpensive extra touches to complete it.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Introduce plants into your home. Houseplants add vitality and freshness to a room and you can build quite a collection by taking cuttings or potting up spider plant babies. If you’re not green-fingered, mix in some fauxs for instant, no-fuss greenery. There’s lots of choice and it can be hard to tell the difference between real and fake.
Search the web to get bargain buys. The internet is great for sourcing homeware, but watch out for hidden charges. ‘I searched hard for a cheaper wallpaper, similar to the high-end one I’d fallen in love with,’ says Sian. ‘There were some great value options on an American website, but once I’d added the shipping costs they weren’t quite such a good deal.’
Add bright colours to a neutral scheme. Boost a casual, eclectic vibe with one-off splashes of contrasting colour. ‘I felt the cocktail cabinet needed a different look from the dark grey table and dresser,’ says Sian. ‘The gold makes a style statement, and breaks things up. If it had been the same dark colour as the other pieces, it just wouldn’t stand out.’ 96 homestylemag.co.uk

My experience…
Turning this room into a dining room was an easy decision, as our small kitchen is just next door and we have a lounge at the front. We rent our home, but our lovely landlady lets us decorate and make it our own. I began by painting the walls white to freshen them up and to add light. My next priority was to find a place for my beloved dresser, which I felt worked best on the chimney breast, next to an original built-in cupboard. I love greenery, so my decorating starting point was a fabulous leafy wallpaper. Although it was way out of my budget, I shopped around for an affordable alternative. I hung it myself learning a new useful skill as my dad had lent me tools and showed me what to do. With the paper up, the look started to emerge. I repainted the dresser, the cupboard and my chunky pine dining set in a nearly-black colour. This linked to the kitchen, where I’ve painted the units navy blue. I then decided to create a bar area, repurposing my old TV unit, which I sprayed gold and now use as a drinks cabinet. I left two walls white for light, but I’ve painted the fourth one with blackboard paint. Everyone writes messages, lists and reminders on it, so it’s different and fun. I’ve accessorised with photos, a few charity shop finds, lots of lush green plants and bright, budget bits like candles and paper pom poms. This room gets so much use now, I think it’s my favourite spot in the house.

Don’t be afraid to try this ombré effect, it looks a lot more technique-led than it actually is, and you need very little in the way of tools. To begin, paint the whole wall in your first chosen colour and allow to dry. Then apply a second shade to the bottom of the wall only. On a separate board, mix the two colours together evenly, then apply the mixed paint to the middle section of the wall where the two colours meet. To soften the look just blend with a clean roller. A barely-used garage had become a dumping ground for everything from sports equipment to old paint. We needed more space, and luckily we could park outside our house, so the garage wasn’t really a necessity so it had to go.

I’m Liz Cockett and I live with my husband, Matt, and our three kids plus cat in a four-bedroomed house in Teddington, south west London.
We had the garage converted as I could see there was room for a reasonably sized bedroom/study and a little en suite, which would solve our space issue for guests and give us an extra shower. I carefully chose the bed to be multi-functional and I squeezed in a little desk area for myself. It’s so lovely having a welcoming space for me to work in and be inspired by – it’s such a treat!

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Style up a neutral office/desk space. Upcycle an old desk by painting it a different colour. Add attractive ceramic knobs to brighten it up and accessorise with fake cacti in pots for a flash of greenery. Don’t forget to display your stationery – this is definitely a guilty pleasure of ours. You could always paint your desk with chalkboard paint so you can doodle your ideas all over it!
Mix vintage finds with contemporary touches. Using a cherished chair which belonged to Liz’s grandfather gives the room a personal touch, and adding a jungle print cushion brings it up-to-date. The mix of tonal greens adds a freshness to the room and the big window next to the chair brings in an abundance of much needed light.
Be savvy with your storage. Look for the most compact models when it comes to bathroom suites so as not to overwhelm a small space. Make sure a vanity unit is wall-mounted so it looks like it’s floating and you can still use the area underneath to store toiletries – it also creates the illusion of more space as the floor isn’t taken up with chunky pieces of furniture. 104 homestylemag.co.uk

My experience…
‘Having a big open shower is such a treat for guests that stay’
We liked this area because it had good schools and plenty of parks, so to get a decent sized house we knew we’d have to pick something that needed work doing. This appealed to us and we liked the idea of making it our own. We knew we didn’t have to rush into anything as the kids were quite small at the time. Our main priority was them having their own bedrooms, so we felt the rest could be worked on gradually. The house was lived in by an old lady previously and nothing had been touched for perhaps 40 years, so it was a great opportunity. We’ve gradually modernised and created a nice family space in the kitchen-diner and redone the bathroom. But the lack of a spare bedroom and another place to shower was starting to become a problem with the kids getting older. I also work from home, so the idea of an office space was very appealing. We looked at moving, but wouldn’t get a lot more for a huge hike in price. We then considered extending into the loft, but it was very expensive, so we focused on the garage. It was a big space, but it was just used as a dumping ground. We’ve got off-street parking, so it was the perfect solution. We took the garage door off, had a wall built halfway up, then partitioned off the en suite. It’s great to offer guests somewhere nice to stay!

The kitchen was very dark and was chopped in half by a strange sticking out section, which made the kitchen area far too small. The units were old-fashioned and falling apart and the diner was disproportionately large.

I’m Katie Alice Dawson, co-owner of katie-alice. co.uk. I live with my partner, Matt, and our dog, Luna, in a three-bedroom semi in Lincolnshire.
We extended out into the garden and brought in more light with a lantern in the new roof. This gave us a clear rectangular space to start again. I love mixing old and new so we’d saved a dresser from our old house, plus a reasonably new range cooker, our aqua Smeg fridge freezer and our trusty vintage table and chairs. We built the new kitchen around the recycled pieces and splashed out on units, a worktop and a new floor, with an island in the middle.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Think outside the box with tiles. To ramp up the French kitchen look opt for quirky tiles like these which are made to look like tin, but use them just on one wall or section for maximum impact. Consider adding a rail for pans and larger utensils. Displaying pieces like this saves on important cupboard space and can make a real feature out of your oven area. Trust us, it can look pretty!
Keep your kitchen feeling open. Rather than a line of heavy wall units, a couple of shelves feel less oppressive, and are also a great place to display all of your favourite crockery and bits and pieces. Open-shelving also allows for more space to add pendant lighting or any other features you want to incorporate.
Opt for brightly coloured appliances. Investing in appliances is something that we would definitely recommend, especially if you want them to make a statement. Katie’s mint green fridge, toaster and kettle add a sense of consistency throughout her kitchen space and are definitely a talking point with her guests. My experience…
We love the historic town of Stamford in Lincolnshire. We were both brought up here, and had moved away, come back, met up and got together. We were previously living in a Victorian two-bedroomed terrace up the road, which we did up. But it was on a busy road, so not ideal for our Italian greyhound, Luna. Also we were thinking about having children (and I’m now expecting), so we needed more space and didn’t want to be worrying every time the front door was open. Properties don’t come up that often here and a lot of it is word of mouth. We heard about this one over eighteen months ago, which offered what we needed, and rushed over. It was very dark and needed lots of love and attention, plus a new kitchen and bathroom. Matt wasn’t convinced, but I felt sure that we could make it work. It already had a reasonably large kitchen-diner at the back of the house. There was plenty of room, it was just really badly laid out. Our aim was an eclectic look, and something that felt like it had been there for ages. We’re not really into contemporary interiors, but something very personal that could only be ours. We painted the walls in Smoked Trout by Farrow & Ball, a very distinctive browny pink to give us a base and went from there. Leaving all the pipework exposed for an industrial touch also cut down on the workload for us as we love the imperfect look.

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan. Drizzle a little oil into the roasting tin and put in the oven for a couple of mins to get hot. Meanwhile, give the potatoes a wash before placing in the preheated roasting tin with the beetroot and return to the oven for 40-45 mins. Heat a little oil in a heavy-based frying pan. Stir fry the kale for 4 mins and then add the peas and asparagus for a further 3-4 mins. Grill the goat’s cheese for 2-3 mins on each side or until they become lightly browned. Combine all the ingredients together, season and serve onto individual plates. Place the grilled goat’s cheese on top and drizzle with balsamic glaze to serve. Top tip: If you fancy a more substantial dressing, mix together French mustard, honey, cider vinegar and salt and pepper, to taste. You can always bulk make this and keep it in the fridge to then use whenever you put together a salad and need a little something to jazz it up. Anything goes when it comes to dressing!

Give the potatoes a wash, put into a pan and cover with cold water then add a good pinch of salt to bring out the natural flavours. Bring to the boil, and simmer gently for 10-15 mins or until the potatoes are tender. Remove the pan from the heat and drain away the water using a colander. Fry the chorizo slices gently in a little oil until they start to crisp up, then remove from the pan and set aside in a bowl. Halve or quarter the potatoes into bite-sized pieces. Add a little more oil to the pan you used for the chorizo and gently fry the potatoes, turning occasionally until they’re golden and lightly crispy. Meanwhile make the sauce in a separate pan. Gently fry the onions and garlic in a little olive oil until soft. Add the tomatoes and paprika and simmer for a further 10 mins. Add a teaspoon of sherry vinegar. Taste and add the sugar and extra vinegar if needed. Tip the potatoes into the sauce and mix gently. Serve immediately with a generous sprinkling of fresh parsley on top.

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan. Mix the turmeric and oil together. Place the broccoli and cauliflower onto a roasting dish, drizzle with 1 tbsp of the turmeric oil and roast for 20-25 mins. Wash the potatoes and simmer gently in salted water for 10-15 mins until they’re tender and cooked through. Remove from the heat, drain and cut into bite-sized chunks. Meanwhile place the salmon fillets in a roasting tin, spread with the remaining turmeric mix, season and roast in the oven for 15 mins, until cooked right through. Mix all the ingredients for the dressing together in a large bowl until combined. Once the potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower have cooled, place them into the bowl with the dressing along with the watercress. Top tip: Why not blitz up the cauliflower in a food processor or by hand, pop it in the microwave for a minute or two and use it as cauliflower rice. It's a great alternative to our traditional carby favourites and tastes great!

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan. Put the coconut oil on a baking tray and place in the oven for a couple of minutes to melt. Gently wash the potatoes, slice into strips and lay flat on the baking tray. Sprinkle with 1 tsp turmeric and season. Roast them for 5 mins, while you drain and rinse the tinned chickpeas. Place the chickpeas in a bowl and add paprika, stirring to coat them evenly. Put the chickpeas on the other half of the baking tray and place in the oven to roast with the potatoes for a further 25 mins until nice and crispy. Add 1 tsp of turmeric and some salt and pepper to the quinoa and mix well. Wash the kale, chop and drizzle with olive oil. Put it in a bowl along with sliced avocado, and radishes and then the quinoa, chickpeas and potatoes. Sprinkle with sesame seeds to serve. Top tip: Make sure to present all of the ingredients separately in a bowl, creating a truly colourful dish that is irresistible. You'll be an Instagram hit in no time!

To make the dressing, simply whisk the ingredients together in a bowl. Give the potatoes a wash and cut into halves or quarters. Simmer gently in salted water for 7-8 mins until tender, then drain. Heat up the grill or griddle. Place the steak, potatoes, tomatoes, onion, mushrooms and peppers into a bowl with the olive oil and mix gently so they are all evenly coated. Thread the ingredients evenly onto wooden skewers one by one. Season well. Place the skewers on the grill or griddle and cook for 8-10 mins, turning the skewers frequently to get an even cook. Once cooked, drizzle the dressing over the skewers and place the remaining sauce in a dish at the side to serve. Top tip: If you don't have a griddle pan, the skewers taste just as good straight from the oven, or why not BBQ them?

ingredients Q 150g butternut squash, cut into 5mm slices Q 1½ tbsp olive oil Q 400g tin chickpeas, drained Q 1 tsp smoked paprika Q ½ tsp cayenne pepper Q ½ tsp ground turmeric Q 80g mixed grains Q White wine vinegar Q 2 medium eggs Q 60g spinach leaves Q Juice of 1 lemon Q 40g fat free Greek yoghurt Q Salt and black pepper, to taste Q 1 tsp chilli oil Q 1 tsp dried chilli flakes Q A few sprigs of dill Q Lemon wedges method Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C Fan/ Gas Mark 7 and line two roasting tins with non-stick baking paper. Lay the butternut squash slices in one of the tins and drizzle over ½ tablespoon of the olive oil. Use a brush to make sure the butternut is well covered and seasoned. Add the chickpeas to another roasting tin and drizzle over the remaining oil. Sprinkle over the paprika, cayenne pepper and turmeric. Shake the tray to coat the chickpeas evenly. Pop both roasting tins into the oven for 25 mins, turning the squash halfway through. While they are roasting, place the grains in a saucepan and rinse well. Drain and cover with cold water, bring to the boil, reduce to a simmer and cook for around 12 mins. Bring a saucepan of water up to simmering point. Add a splash of white wine vinegar (optional). Crack the eggs into separate cups or ramekins. Swirl the water and then carefully tip one egg, followed by the other, into the water, to the side of the pan. Reduce to a gentle simmer and poach for 3 mins, then remove with a slotted spoon and drain. Once the grains are cooked, drain and return them to the saucepan. Add the spinach leaves, lemon juice and lots of seasoning and stir the leaves through to wilt. Spread the grains out on a serving dish and top with the squash slices. Dollop with the yoghurt and top with the eggs. Add half of the crispy chickpeas. Drizzle over the chilli oil and sprinkle the chilli flakes and fresh dill on top. Serve with fresh lemon wedges.

Fish tacos PreP and cook time 30 mins SerVeS 2 ingredientS Q 250g monkfish loin Q 1 tsp olive oil Q ½ tsp ground cumin Q ½ tsp paprika Q ¼ tsp cayenne pepper Q salt and black pepper, to taste Q 40g red cabbage, shredded Q 40g white cabbage, shredded Q 1 red onion, quick-pickled Q Coriander leaves Q Dried chilli flakes Q 4 small flatbreads SaLSa Q ½ avocado Q 2 tomatoes, diced Q 2 spring onions, chopped Q 1 tbsp coriander, roughly chopped Q Juice of 1 lime taco SaUce Q 2 tbsp natural yoghurt Q Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lime Q 1 tsp sriracha method Put the monkfish into a shallow dish and add the olive oil, cumin, paprika, cayenne and some salt and pepper. Turn the fish over until it’s all coated. Place a frying pan on a high heat and, once hot, lay in the fish. Cook for 2 mins on each side. Try not to move it before the time is up, so that you get some charring which makes it taste better. Then remove from the heat and put it on a chopping board to rest – the residual heat will keep the fish cooking and finish it off. Making the salsa is as simple as mixing all the ingredients together in a bowl and seasoning with some salt and pepper. It's essential for this dish. To make the taco sauce, place everything in a small bowl and whisk together well. You can add more or less depending on preference. To serve, cut the monkfish into 5mm slices; take a flatbread and load it with red and white cabbage, some salsa, monkfish slices, pickled red onion, taco sauce, coriander leaves, and chilli flakes if you want it even more fiery!

Lemon spelt cupcakes PreP and cook time 40 mins makeS 12 ingredientS Q 150g unsalted butter Q 150g coconut sugar, softened Q 3 medium eggs Q 160g spelt flour Q 1½ tsp baking powder Q Finely grated zest and juice of 2 lemons Q 80g mascarpone raspberry or acai berry freeze-dried sprinkles, to decorate (optional) method Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/ Gas Mark 4. Line a cake tin with cases. Add the butter and sugar to a large mixing bowl and beat with an electric (or manual) beater until pale and fluffy. This will take a couple of mins

depending on the utensil. Then add one egg at a time, making sure the first one is well mixed in before adding the next. Add the flour, baking powder and all the lemon zest, but only half the juice, save the rest for the icing. Beat everything together until combined, then place a spoonful in each of the paper cases. Pop the tin into the oven and bake for around 18-20 mins until golden and risen. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool in the tin for around 5 mins before lifting them out to fully cool on a wire rack. Beat together the mascarpone and remaining lemon juice and, once the cupcakes have fully cooled, pipe or spoon some onto the tops. Decorate with some freeze-dried fruit, powder sprinkles, dark chocolate shavings or extra lemon zest, if you like. Now serve and enjoy.

With the sun giving us its all this year (we are not complaining), it's time to keep cool with these refreshing and healthy treats
Strawberry ice pops PreP and freezing time 3hrs 10 mins ServeS makeS 6 ingredientS Q 200g strawberries Q 1 tbsp icing sugar Q 300g Alpro strawberry (or yogurt)
method Cut the strawberries into quarters and whizz together 150g of strawberries and the icing sugar using a hand blender. If you don't have an electric blender, a manual mixer will work just as well but it may take a little longer to achieve the correct consistency. If you dislike seeds, you can always strain the mixture to remove any bits. Once complete, add the remaining strawberries to the sweet purĂŠe and mix together. Try not to stir too hard to avoid mashing the individual strawberries so they remain solid. Pour the strawberry mixture into six ice lolly moulds, ensuring that it is evenly spread.

Try to place the quartered strawberries on the edges of the moulds so that they are visible on the outside. This creates a fun looking popsicle. Top up each of the moulds with the delicious Alpro strawberry. You can always use a regular strawberry yogurt as an alternative. Now it's time to be patient and leave the lollies for at least three hours until they are frozen. Once set, they are ready to be eaten and enjoyed! Why not up your game by covering them in white, milk or dark chocolate and adding sprinkles for extra pizzazz. Don't forget to let the chocolate cool down to room temperature before dipping them into the sweet goodness. Yummy!

Coconut, pineapple and blood orange smoothie drink PreP time 15 mins ServeS 2 ingredientS Q 200g Alpro plain with coconut Q ½ large pineapple slice Q ½ medium blood orange Q mint leaves method Peel and chop the pineapple, you can either cut it into chucks or segments. Cover up and set the remaining pieces to one side for garnishing. Slice the orange into small segments ready for blending. Put the fruit and mint leaves into a blender and add the Alpro plain with coconut. You could always add a small amount of coconut shavings to the blender or when serving the delicious drink for style points. Blend together and pour into a glass to enjoy. Dress with a slice of pineapple and decorative accessories such as an umbrella and a paper straw. If you're having a summer garden party, add a splash of Malibu to give it that Pina Colada vibe. Banana bounty mocktail cooler PreP time 15 mins ServeS 1 ingredientS Q 150ml Alpro coconut original drink Q 25g chopped frozen banana Q 1 inch or 10g peeled fresh ginger Q ½ vanilla pod, seeds scraped out method Firstly, chop the frozen banana into small slices. Scrape the seeds of half a vanilla pod and then peel the fresh ginger. Once the ingredients have been prepared, add the Alpro coconut original, frozen banana, fresh ginger and vanilla into a blender.

Blitz the mixture until a smooth consistency has been achieved. This is down to your personal preference; whether you like it extremely smooth or with added texture, the blending time will vary. Once mixed to your preference, pour the drink into a tall glass and serve with a slice of banana. Once you have mastered this, try different types of flavours and become the queen of mocktails. Go sweet with peanut, caramel or cookies, we want to try them all! Top tip: There are various non-alcoholic beverages that are now available. Our 1930s home has a happy vibe and is as much for the kids as it is for the grown-ups. I wanted to do something special with the understairs area in our son’s room, so we turned it into a reading nook using acrylic display racks as bookshelves, adding comfort through a sheepskin rug and cushions in fun, bright colours. It also transforms into a den and is always a hit with any little friends who are visiting. @firstsenseinteriors

This has to be one of my favourite spots in the house. Our home is a new-build so the first thing I wanted to do when we moved in was to put my stamp on the openplan kitchen-diner. I used Farrow & Ball’s Railings. The boxes are Hobbycraft, I decorated them using the leftover paint. I will enjoy watching this jungle grow! @mum_does_design
