We’ve been shamelessly snooping around the shops, so you don’t miss a single thing that matters...

Get the Emma Willis look If you love her style, you should check out The Voice presenter Emma Willis’ new range of bedlinen at Dunelm. ‘It’s basically me, on bedlinen,’ she says. ‘It’s quite versatile, clean, crisp and unfussy. My wardrobe has influenced this range, but my home style is much more feminine than my fashion style.’ There are four designs in the range, but we particularly like the blue Klio set (below) and Klara, for its smart, tailored stripes.

Quick cuteness for kids’ rooms Fabric and wallpaper firm Villa Nova has brought out its first collection for children’s rooms – Picturebook – featuring designs from three super-talented book illustrators. It includes six sets of wall stickers, which are a great way to decorate a kid’s room in minutes. They’re repositionable, so you can move them around or remove them when your little one’s ready for something new. There are also 3x3m murals for fun feature walls, as well as cushions and rugs to co-ordinate with the Picturebook designs.

FEATURE MICHELA COLLING, VANESSA RICHMOND

The sheer volume of paint colours out there makes it tough to choose. That’s where Sanderson’s 154 Colour paint chart comes in. Developed over more than a century and including tasteful, timeless colours, it’s an easy go-to when refreshing a room. Plus there are 50 new shades – all tinted to match Sanderson’s gorgeous wallpapers and fabrics – so you can easily add pattern too. For a tester pot, go to stylelibrary.com/sandersonpaint.

IDEAL

Yes, it looks like Cousin Itt from The Addams Family, but we think this hairy shade (made from thin strips of dyed rattan) is strangely sassy!

The kitchen is absolutely my favourite space. It’s the real heart of the home and has a lovely atmosphere, with a view of the other rooms and the garden beyond

ith two young children aged under five, Marjolein and Marco Bouhuijzen had outgrown their Thirties town house, so decided to look outside the city in their search for a new home. ‘We’d put in a number of bids for local properties, which had all come to nothing,’ says Marjolein, ‘but then one day a new construction project in Uitgeest (a small town in the north of Holland) caught my eye. Marco was born and raised in the neighbouring village, so after visiting the site over several weekends we decided to make the move.’ The location was the former site of a milk factory with views over a pasture, consisting of four properties set in a cul-de-sac. ‘Our house is called the “Kapberg” which means haystack,’ says Marjolein. ‘It’s built of timber and stone, and has space outside for a vegetable garden and stables for horses.’ The project took a year to complete. ‘I was getting impatient and was keen to start decorating,’ Marjolein says. ‘I’d had a year to plan, which meant I could get the design just right.’ Marjolein decided to re-work the downstairs layout completely. ‘I wanted the kitchen to function as the heart of the house, connected to the other spaces, but with defined areas for living and dining, playroom and hallway.’ To achieve this, she came up with the idea of putting in a large steel-framed window between the kitchen and living room to separate the spaces without blocking any light. ‘The window doesn’t open, but it makes the spaces feel connected.’ The decision has paid off. ‘The kitchen is absolutely my favourite space,’ she says. ‘It’s the real heart of the house and has a lovely atmosphere with a view of all the rooms, the garden beyond, and the meadows.’

INSET EXTRACTOR Discreet, and doesn’t block the view across the kitchen

Add beautifully textured surfaces ‘I wanted to make a statement with tiles covering the entire wall, rather than just a splashback,’ says Marjolein. ‘I like the combination of the pale green Moroccan tiles with their irregular surface against the black and white wallpaper.’ BUY THE KEY PIECES Zanzibar green wall tiles, £44sq m, Topps Tiles are similar. REAL HOME ‘To give more depth to the room I painted a band on two of the walls in a soft green tint’

Be clever with colour ‘Nika’s bedroom is in the attic,’ says Marjolein. ‘Because the ceilings are very high, I focused on the area around the bed, using a soft pink shade to make the corner feel more cosy. She loves butterflies, so I added these stickers above the bed.’ BUY THE KEY PIECES Flexa white children’s bed, £181, Smallable. Soft duvet cover, £25, Hema. Black butterfly wall stickers, from £1.30, DecoWall at Amazon

Put every inch of space to work ‘I’ve carried on the butterfly theme on the other side of the room with a collection of pictures above the desk. We hadn’t realised at first how big the loft space was going to be so we’ve recently added this false wall which has given us an extra space behind for storage.’ BUY THE KEY PIECES Alex desk, £120; Agam junior chair, £35, both Ikea. Make it work for you MARJOLEIN’S CHOICE: CONCRETE FLOORING Fallen hard for Marjolein’s industrial-inspired concrete flooring? Find out if it ticks every box with our guide Hard-wearing, easy to clean and dust-mite resistant, it’s little wonder polished-concrete flooring is so popular. The industrial look is very on trend too, plus it works brilliantly with underfloor heating.

Q

What is polished concrete? Flooring made from concrete, either raw or coloured, which has been polished and sealed to create an industrial-style, non-porous surface. The concrete is treated with diamond-polishing tools and is often finished to a grit level of 800, 1,500 or 3,000 (the higher the grit, the shinier the floor). Costs vary from £80 to £450sq m, depending if it’s levelled by machine or trowelled by hand.

Q

FEATURE LINDA CLAYTON PHOTOGRAPH LOUIS LEMAIRE/INSIDE HOME PAGE

How is it installed? Techniques vary but most polished-concrete floors are poured in a single layer, 10cm-thick. The next day, expansion cuts are sawn into the floor, encouraging inevitable shrinkage cracks to form in a neat line. These are then filled with an expandable, colourmatched sealant. Finally the floor is cleaned, polished and sealed.

Q

Does it take long? It depends on the size and temperature of the room, plus the installation methods chosen, but

allow around seven to 10 days for a 10cm-thick floor. It will also need to be resealed in time to keep it waterproof.

Q

Will it crack? There’s always the possibility, but many people love the pattern and imperfection of fine lines. Shrink-reducing additives and anti-crack reinforcing help to minimise larger cracks. Sudden temperature changes are the main cause so it’s important to introduce heating, particularly underfloor, slowly.

A robust and easy-to-clean floor was a must for Marjolein’s open-plan space

Q

Can you retro-fit it? It’s far easier to install polished concrete in a new-build or extension, before doors and skirting boards are fitted. Laying it in an existing room will require the flooring to be ripped up and skirting replaced. Doors may also need to be re-hung. A micro-concrete floor, in a thinner 5-7mm layer, is another option.

BEST FOR...

Choose a specialist installer with a good track record – the floor should offer good depth of tone and lustre, with a hard-wearing finish JONATHAN REID, DIRECTOR, GREYMATTER CONCRETE

‘If it’s not beautiful or useful, don’t keep it!’ This is just one of the style rules Sophia Ridley, Head of Design at Debenhams, lives by to keep her busy family home calm and organised

ophia, who joined Debenhams six years ago, leads the team that creates the store’s range of homeware, including the Designers at Debenhams collections. She lives in south London with her husband Gavin and their daughters, Gabby, 17, and Issy, 15. There’s nothing worse than a cluttered home. I have a very busy working life, so I need my space to be organised and tidy – I can’t relax unless everything is in its place. That’s why I’m first out of bed at the weekend. My daughters always have their friends around and they all make a mess, so straightening everything up first thing in the morning helps me to feel relaxed. Get rid of things that you neither love nor need. Simplify your life. It’s really important not to keep things that are neither beautiful nor useful. I am a collector, though – I love glass and ceramics and have collected Seventies Swedish glass since I was 21. I’m not a hoarder, but once you start buying it, you can’t stop! I’ve found really beautiful furniture at boot sales, junk shops and fairs. I have two teens,

Good design never dates. Brands such as Iittala, Marimekko and Arabia are favourites of mine. Their aesthetic is so amazing because they have the original mid-century designs. I have an amazing Sixties hanging wicker egg chair in my bedroom. My sister found it in her in-laws’ garage and gave it to me. It’s a beautiful piece and I love it.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED

one thing I’ve learned “as The I’ve got older is how to curate my possessions better and I’m more disciplined about what I keep and what I throw or give away

OCTOBER 2018

Great design should be accessible to everyone, though. That’s why I love Ikea. We have a couple of Soderhamn sofas. It’s a modular design, so you can buy as many pieces as you want to fit. I pimped ours with new turnedwood legs that I bought from Etsy. I’ve learned so much from working with the Designers at Debenhams. They’re full of tips – John Rocha once told me that when you buy a rug, make sure it goes all the way under your sofa so it extends the eyeline of the room. My team and I work closely with the designers, who all work differently and it’s a fascinating process. Jasper Conran is super hands-on and amazing to work with. Matthew Williamson comes in twice a season to look at our designs based on his brief. He sends us loads of images and products for inspiration. Abigail Ahern is such an inspiration and I love her faux plants. I’d never dreamed of having fakes in my home before, but hers are beautiful.

so I don’t buy expensive things! My objects represent different stages of my journey through life. I’ve inherited my parents’ ‘filter’ – the skill of knowing what is well designed. They were passionate about art and design. We didn’t have much money, but we had an interesting home full of art, junk and second-hand furniture.

Welcome to my home THE PROPERTY A two-bed Victorian terraced cottage in Godalming, Surrey.

THE VALUE Bought for £325,000 in 2016; now worth £425,000. Kitt Moss, an interior stylist, lives here with her boyfriend Jack Noy, an events co-ordinator.

We have a good mix of colours, a blend of old and new furniture, and period features, so I’m happy!

itt Moss and Jack Noy were renting a flat when a cottage a few doors away came up for sale. ‘The owner had lived in it for 50 years, and it was very dated,’ says Kitt. A survey revealed that the cottage would need extensive renovation, including rebuilding the walls, reinforcing the floor and ceiling joists, and using steel piles to fix subsidence. Undaunted, the couple bought the cottage and decided to reconfigure the interior and extend to the rear as part of the renovation work. The cottage was stripped back to a bare shell, so the couple continued to live in their rented flat while work was done. They extended to the rear to turn the old galley kitchen and adjoining bathroom into a spacious kitchen-diner, reconfigured the front sitting room into a separate hall and a study by building a wall, and converted the third bedroom upstairs into a bathroom. Kitt was keen to retain and recycle as many original features as possible. ‘I love old objects and furniture with a bit of history to them,’ she says. ‘We kept the old cast iron fireplaces in what is now the study and in the main bedroom. They’ve lasted this long, so I thought it important to preserve them for a few more years yet!’ When it came to the decor, Kitt found she had more ideas than she could use. ‘You have to sift ideas from as many sources as possible,’ she says. ‘We didn’t rush to do everything at once, but took our time to decide exactly what colours and furniture would create the look we wanted.’ Kitt had to rein in some of her more outlandish ideas, though. ‘I would have used dark colours throughout for a dramatic look – including a dark blue kitchen with gold handles – but Jack prefers a more subtle look, so there had to be a compromise!’

I still pinch myself when I walk round my home – I can’t believe it’s really mine

t was the space that clinched it for Hollie and Ric Goodwin when they first went to view their detached Seventies house in Cheshire. ‘I was in two minds about moving home as I’d just had a baby but we needed a bigger long-term house where the children could have fun and we could have more space to entertain,’ says Hollie. ‘We only viewed this one property and could see its potential straight away,’ she explains. ‘We started the building work the day after we moved in! The previous owners had lived here for more than 20 years and nothing felt in the right place. There was a separate dining room and the galley kitchen was tiny, with dated rainbow tiles, pine units and black laminate worktops. It was crying out for an extension.’ The couple knocked together the kitchen and dining room, as well as extending at the rear. ‘Ideally, we would have had a roof lantern, but it wasn’t possible, structurally,’ says Hollie. ‘Instead, we went for bifold doors and Velux roof windows, which provide the lovely, light, airy feel I wanted. When it came to prioritising spending, our biggest investment was the kitchen. We kept the look simple and fresh, so it will be a classic for many years to come. I particularly love the island, where the kids have breakfast, as well as the big 8ft table that everyone fits around.’ With the hard graft done, Hollie and Ric could take their time decorating in the perfect neutral colour palette of whites, pinks and greys. ‘My dream is to have a place in the countryside with land all around once the children have grown up,’ says Hollie. ‘But we’ll stay here for 10 to 15 years as there’s a great community and I’m thrilled with how the house has been transformed.’

REAL HOME

Define function with storage ‘If there’s one thing in the house I couldn’t live without, it’s the bespoke seating and coat rack in the hall,’ says Hollie. ‘It was an echoey area with just a chair where coats would get thrown before. The Ideal Home Guide to TIMELESS STYLE

PATTERNS NOTHING CAN DATE A ROOM LIKE AN OF-THE-MOMENT MOTIF, SO KEEP IT CLASSIC WITH THESE IDEAS

STYLE & DECOR

Stylist’s Note ‘Geometrics are easy to mix with each other as well as other patterns, as long as you keep to a shared colour palette’ Nicky Phillips, Decorating Editor

SIMPLE GEOMETRICS From elegant fretwork prints to softly blurred ikats and pretty Art Deco fans, there’s one for every look. Their simplicity is their strength, making them subtle in a soft colour or impactful in a bold one, and good at setting off interesting furniture or other patterns OCTOBER 2018

Moroccan tiles

Ikat influences

These patterns look great in darker tones that allow gorgeous pale-wood furniture to really stand out.

Inspired by traditional African woven fabrics, these blurred diamond patterns work best in a mid-century or industrial-style scheme.

DECADENT DECO Look for diamond or fan motifs with a sheen or pearlescent finish for glamour. Brian Yates Gatsby in Pearl, £86.50 a roll, Wallpaper Direct

STYLIST’S NOTE Geometrics create a backdrop that won’t detract from whatever else is going on in the room, but they’re also great – in a bold colour – as an accent on blinds, rugs or cushions

STYLE & DECOR

Stylist’s Note ‘Block prints can be heavily detailed and busy, so limit them to a fabulous feature wall and mix block-printed fabrics with plains’ Nicky Phillips, Decorating Editor

ARTISAN BLOCK PRINTS Traditionally printed using beautifully carved wooden blocks (although now, of course, it’s mostly done digitally…), these patterns have a heritage that endures and are a work of art for your walls. Use them in a country or Scandi look with simple, wooden furniture OCTOBER 2018

e had rented for many years, so buying a house was really exciting,’ says Katie Seidler. Discovering this detached Victorian house in St Albans, she and her husband Russell fell in love with its spacious rooms, which included three bedrooms, a bathroom and an en suite, plus an extended kitchen and converted loft. ‘We call this house the Tardis, because you can’t tell how big it is from the outside.’ ‘We loved the original features, like the windows and the fireplaces, but the decor needed updating. It was a project that wouldn’t involve ripping down walls, though, and I could see how quickly we could make a difference to it simply by painting, creating designated spaces and adding in some personality.’ ‘The first thing we did was to change the floors to a light oak to bounce the light back into the house,’ says Katie. Travelling overseas to Copenhagen regularly for work, Katie was inspired by the monochrome decor there and was keen to inject some Scandi style into her home. ‘I really wanted the house to look pared back, but with lots of design features and unique finds from my travels. I wanted to mix it up with soft natural wood and minimal Danish-style accessories,’ she says. The biggest job to tackle was the kitchen. The couple replaced the old grey granite worktops and removed wall units they could do without, to open up the space. Then the walls were tiled and a new sink, hob, extractor and shelves fitted. ‘It wasn’t major work, but it really transformed the space from a bland kitchen to one with more style,’ says Katie. ‘It’s the best house for entertaining, as everyone always ends up in the kitchen! We’re so pleased with how the house has evolved since we moved in.’ Follow Katie on Instagram @hello_haus.

2

DRESS YOUR MANTEL Give your mantelpiece a seasonal feel by displaying pine cones, berries and eucalyptus along the top edge.

3

5

Add pattern to your room with a blind

If wallpapering your sitting room seems a bit daunting and permanent, introduce pattern with a simple roller blind instead. Go for a subtle design if your window is large, so it doesn’t distract from the rest of the room, and keep colours muted.

INTRODUCE A MODERN METALLIC

Give a tired sitting room a glamorous makeover by adding touches of brass or copper in the form of vases, lamps or jar candles, for an instant lift. Geo vase, £50, Biba range, House of Fraser

STYLIST’S NOTE

Fitting a single roller blind to a bay window will create a streamlined finish, plus it gives you flexible control over light levels YVONNE KEAL, HILLARYS

4

Supersize your wall art

An oversized framed print or photograph will break up a plain wall and stop a bold colour overwhelming, especially if the room is large. An abstract style will work with all looks.

MIX IN A STATEMENT SEAT

While your sofas need to be as versatile and timeless as possible, there’s nothing stopping you indulging your crazy-glam side with a fabulous armchair. When you get tired of it, just move it to another room!

Concha half-circle armchair in blue, £855, Out There Interiors

8

Create a gallery wall

Hang a collection of framed prints in a large square or rectangular shape, broken up with other knick-knacks, postcards or objets, for a striking but streamlined display.

9

TRY A DIY ROOM FRAGRANCE Put a vanilla-scented tea light or candle in a small bowl filled with coffee beans and place it on a side table. The candle will heat the beans and create a delicious aroma.

Aspenwood floor tiles, £37.99sq m; grey stone effect wall tiles, £49.99sq m, both Gemini Tiles Greenery Clay roller blind, from £83 including measuring and fitting, Hillarys

10

Try tiles in a living space

Textural-look tiles can look amazing in living spaces as well as kitchens or bathrooms. Look for mock natural surfaces, like these grainy wood-effect floor tiles and slate slips, which make a gorgeously rustic feature wall.

STYLE & DECOR

11

Add a band of colour to a bland wall

Painting the bottom half of a wall is a great way to add colour – and character – to a space, without going too far. Use decorating tape to give the line a crisp finish.

12

HIDE WORN SOFA ARMS WITH A THROW

As well as being within reach to snuggle under on a chilly evening, a soft throw popped over one or both arms of the sofa is also a perfect way to cover wine/coffee/ pizza stains or threadbare fabric.

Brasilia throw, £29, Barker and Stonehouse

Folia Acacia Roman blind, from £211 including measuring and fitting, Hillarys

13

14

CREATE A READING CORNER Surround yourself with home comforts for the snuggest of autumns, starting with a supersized armchair (or scaled-down sofa) where you can stretch out and relax with a good book or mag.

15

SCALE UP ROMAN BLINDS

Although perfect for smaller windows, Roman blinds can make a big impact when scaled up to hang at a large window too, providing an instant pop of colour for your living space.

Medina fringed rug, £145, Curious Egg

TREAT FEET WITH A RUG

Warm up wooden floors during the winter months, with a thick rug to sink your toes into as you sit on the sofa. Go for a rug that’s the same width or wider than your sofa otherwise it can look a bit lost. Use rug tape (£2.50 for 5m, Wilko) to anchor it to a hard floor and stop it slipping and sliding. OCTOBER 2018

17

SCALE UP A MANTEL CLOCK

A traditional carriage clock on the mantelpiece is hard to see and can look dated, so instead go for a large wall clock and hang it over the mantel as a focal point. A Roman-numeral style keeps it classic. Metal skeleton wall clock, £35, Marks & Spencer

A big television hanging on your wall can be a bit of an eyesore, so simply mount identically framed pictures on to hinged MDF panels to make a clever screen that can be folded back when the TV is in use.

COLOUR CODE YOUR BOOKS

Turn your bookcase or open shelves into a more stylish display by organising your books by colour to create an appealing rainbow effect. Keep them all vertical for a uniform look, or play with stacking some horizontally to mix it up a bit.

20

Be bold with curtains

Floor-to-ceiling curtains provide the perfect finishing touch for a room, as well as making it feel much cosier on winter evenings. A cushion or two in the same pattern will help to tie the room scheme together.

21

CLEAR UP THE FIREPLACE Stash firewood in an open basket to allow the air to circulate. Save strips of orange or lemon peel to burn, too – they’ll give off a pleasant citrusy aroma and help banish stale odours.

HOW JOSIE AND CRAIG DID IT ‘The ceilings and walls had been replastered and a new radiator fitted when we were renovating the house, but the room still had a grubby old carpet, no storage and no style! We found the hotel-style bed first, with a winged, buttoned headboard, and it inspired the rest of the scheme. As the room had to appeal to both of us, it couldn’t be overly girlie or too masculine, so we struck a balance with dark walls and furniture, with pretty pale shades to brighten it. We decided to invest in fitted wardrobes, so went to a local showroom where a designer drew exactly what we needed. Once they were in, we laid a new carpet, hung bespoke curtains and moved in the furniture. It’s full of interesting details and is the perfect retreat!’

OCTOBER 2018

‘Having the kitchen separate from the other downstairs rooms didn’t work,’ says Richard. ‘We needed an integrated space where we could entertain.’ The couple found inspiration at a showroom. ‘It had a roomset like a loft kitchen, so we could picture it in our space straight away,’ says Richard. ‘Rebuilding our extension changed everything’ The Browns demolished two split-level extensions and replaced them with one level space on the same footprint

HOW CLAIRE AND RICHARD DID IT ‘We had plans to renovate the house, but were going to leave the kitchen as it was. When we started talking to CDMS Architects, we realised that the problem with the ground floor was that it was split over two levels and had no flow. They suggested demolishing the old extensions and building a new, level structure in its place that flowed into the garden. We wanted a relaxed, kitchenliving space and this was the

best way of achieving it. The building work took about four months and cost around £74,000. We moved away from the hi-gloss doors we had in our previous home, wanting a loft-style look. We found units we liked in the Plain English showroom and the designer there helped us with space planning. She drew a layout with a workable configuration and we’re so happy with how well it’s worked.

KITCHEN PROJECT

Make it work for you CLAIRE’S CHOICE: A DISCREET COOKER HOOD Not a fan of show-off options that dominate your kitchen? Consider one that works behind the scenes… Built-in extractors blend into the kitchen when they’re not being used, then clear the air without fuss. But they do need to go somewhere: the unit below the hob, wall cupboard above or in your ceiling void. Speak to your kitchen designer early on to ensure space is allocated.

Q

Which are most discreet? It depends on the hob location. By a wall, the cheapest solution is a canopy or built-in hood in a wall cupboard above the hob. Telescopic versions pull out to capture more steam. No wall cupboards? Consider a downdraught extractor by the hob to collect steam and odour closer to its source. Two-inone hob/extractors, which include a downdraught extractor in the hob, are a big trend, but still quite pricey.

Q

FEATURE LINDA CLAYTON PHOTOGRAPHS SIMONREGAN.COM (SOUND CHOICE)

Are downdraught extractors effective? Opinions vary. Hot air rises, so it takes powerful suction to change its natural course. A model that glides up out of the worktop to suck air near the top of pans is likely to capture more odours before they escape up to the ceiling.

Q

How can I extract above my island? In-ceiling extractors are the newest way to vent above an island unit, and less obtrusive

than a traditional island hood. Fitted flush to the ceiling, in the same colour, you’ll barely see it. However, you do need decent space in the ceiling void to fit the motor and achieve a flush fit.

Q

And with high ceilings? The extraction rate reduces on heights over 2.5m, not unusual in Georgian and Victorian properties, or new builds with vaulted ceilings. Bringing the in-ceiling extractor closer to the hob by building it into a bulkhead is less discreet but still keeps the extraction out of the line of sight.

Q

How are they vented? All integrated extractors are available in ducted and recirculating versions – many work with both. Ducting out is preferable as odours are removed rather than filtered and returned to the room. However, recirculating technology now offers better odour reduction, longer-lasting filters and easier installation, so don’t rule it out.

I think the contrast looks stunning. We used the Howdens design service and I told them exactly

what I wanted in terms of the layout and fitting in a large fridge-freezer, and they made it all possible in the great plans they drew up for us. Instead of hiring an architect for the extension, we got structural engineers involved and used the building regulations officer at the council to check the work. Altogether, the building work took around eight weeks and the kitchen came in at £12,000, including installation costs.’

HOW NAOMI AND BEN DID IT ‘We decided to gain extra floor space by knocking down a wall into our spare bedroom and incorporating its window. We wanted the room to be light and relaxing and feel spacious, so we stuck to a simple palette of white walls complemented with natural materials. Welcome to my home Gail Rock lives here.

THE PROPERTY A three-bedroom flat in Brighton, built in the Nineties.

WHAT IT COST

‘The bathroom was very dated and the lack of storage meant that toiletries made it cluttered and untidy,’ says Gail. ‘I wanted the room to reflect my style and personality, and the beautiful cabinetry certainly helped to achieve that.’ Burford Natural Oak bespoke unit in Pebble Grey by Roper Rhodes, £2,690; Phoenix Athena towel radiator, £225, both The Brighton Bathroom Company. HOW GAIL DID IT ‘Even though I knew it would mean a complete redo, I wanted my bathroom to have a more streamlined look. It has two doors – one from the main bedroom and one from the hall – and I considered losing one to free up space for a separate shower, but I decided to keep both because I prefer the flexibility when I have guests. I employed The Brighton Bathroom Company to help me plan the room and their designer came to my home to get an idea of my style and tastes. I love clean lines and was keen to simplify the bathroom’s fixtures and fittings as much as possible, so the design wouldn’t date quickly. The entire project took five weeks and installation cost around £7,000 – and I’m delighted with it!

BEFORE & AFTER

BE FOR E

‘Clever glazing brightened up a dark space’ James and Orla Mosha turned a series of dark disjointed areas into a light-filled family space

The previous side extension was small and had to be accessed via a shower room

AFTER

W

hen James and Orla Mosha moved into their Victorian house in Hackney, they waited three years before transforming the dark and disconnected rooms at the back of the house. ‘We wanted something modern that would work well with the original house,’ says James. ‘Top of the list was maximum light and a space that flowed well.’

FINALISING THE DESIGN

The couple approached architect Peter Chiu of FC Architects, who came up with three designs. ‘Funnily enough, we didn’t opt for the one with the largest square footage. We both really liked the use of glazing – it definitely didn’t look boring!’ says James. The whole space was rearranged, with the side return integrated into the main kitchen area by removing a wall. A rear extension provides a dining area, while large, frameless panes of glass fill the space with natural light. TAKING A RISK

A problem with the glazing meant James and Orla took a gamble and had some of the internal work done before the space was watertight. ‘Luckily the glazing was finished on 22 December and we moved in on Christmas Eve!’ says James.

The couple added a new rear extension and knocked it into the old one to create a large, open space

Welcome to my home James and Orla Mosha live here with their son Ollie, two, and James’s son Jake, 19, stays at weekends.

BEFORE & AFTER

The Easyglaze panes add lots of natural light to the new extension

ABOVE The existing side-return extension, which was previously just used for storage, now adds valuable space to the new kitchen-diner LEFT The new structure has given the couple enough room for a super-long kitchen island unit that faces out onto the garden. Units in such a dark grey tone are possible in a space as light and bright as this

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT…

Frameless glazing Architect Peter Chiu of FC Architects shares his tips IT ALWAYS HAS A FRAME It’s just hidden or minimal. The success of the ‘framelessness’ depends on how you integrate it into the building design.

1

INSTALLATION IS VITAL If you try and hide the frames all round, make sure the glass can actually be inserted and removed in case of any breakages.

2

SOLAR REFLECTIVE COATING Be mindful of solar gain and over heating. If it’s west or south facing you’ll want a reflective coating to keep the space cool. FRAME MEASUREMENTS Before asking the glazier to measure, make sure your opening is perfectly square. If it’s not it can make the glass much more expensive to produce and if it’s pitched and off-square, it becomes even more difficult.

4

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED

It would have been more cost “efficient to have had the whole house rewired rather than just the extension, as we’ve needed to do this for the rest of the house since the build

148

OCTOBER 2018

LEAD-IN TIMES CAN BE LONG. For large panes prioritise the structural opening in your project so that there's plenty of time to order the glazing.

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS

TECH SUPPORT GET SMART TO ONLINE SCAMS As we all spend more time online – whether that’s working, shopping or socialising – we risk falling victim to cyber criminals that are more devious than ever. But fear not – we’ve got the advice you need to stay one step ahead of the bad guys

Q

How do email and social media accounts get hacked and what can I do to prevent it happening to me? 1. You were duped by a phishing scam asking you to confirm your password – ignore these messages. 2. You used an easy password or used the same one on multiple sites. Mix up your passwords and make them at least 16 characters. 3. Your software or apps aren’t up to date – developers try and stay one step ahead of the hackers. 4. You’ve joined an unsecure wi-fi network – only ever log on to wi-fi accounts that you trust. Make a secure note of all the passwords you use

Q

What can I do if my email has been hacked? Don’t rush to change your password – the hacker will see it. Run your anti-virus software to find and delete anything harmful. Once that’s done, change your passwords and security questions for your email and online services such as Netflix, Amazon and especially your bank accounts.

FEATURE CHRIS HASLAM PHOTOGRAPH ALAMY

Q

I’m getting messages that my computer has been hacked – what should I do? Ignore and delete them! Hackers prey on fear and often use pop-up warning boxes to tell you that your computer will be at risk unless you download anti-virus software. If you click, you could download infectious code.

Q

I’ve been scammed. Help! Don’t be embarrassed –

Ideal Home Tip The Government recommends using three random words and non-alphabetical characters in passwords, such as 8greenelephantfence23!, for example scams are constantly refined to make them as effective as possible. If you’ve given out bank details, call your credit card company or bank, and if you have handed over money, call the police too, as your bank or insurer will need a crime number. Report anything suspicious to actionfraud.police.uk

Q

How do I keep my bank details safe? If you’re buying online, always check the page has ‘https’ and a padlock symbol before the URL, which prevents hackers from

tampering or spying, and if it’s a company you’ve not used before, sign up using strong passwords before handing over bank details. Try using a credit card rather than debit as it stops hackers emptying your accounts and the credit card will have anti-fraud measures.

Q

I updated my passwords… now I’ve forgotten them! Chances are your browser has a password manager that can help you remember, and if you activate it, it will also give suggestions for stronger names.

Discover a brand new supplement from Seven Seas that can help to visibly reduce the signs of ageing

B

eing passionate about beautiful homes, and lavishing time and energy on them, not to mention the demands of family life, doesn’t always leave time to look after ourselves. And, sadly, none of us is immune to the effects of ageing that begin to appear on our complexions. The good news is that if your skin is looking a little lacklustre – just as you’d revamp a tired room – there are ways to visibly freshen up your appearance. Most of us reach for face creams but Seven Seas has launched new Perfect7® Renewal, an innovative oral supplement with ceramosides™, that works from the inside out, for better looking, moisturised skin, and is scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in 60 days.*

Seven Seas Perfect7® Renewal is the first skin supplement of its kind in the UK to use ceramosides™, a natural source of ceramides. Alongside well-known beauty ingredients like collagen, ceramides are needed for beautiful-looking skin. If you’ve never heard of ceramides before, they are molecules that occur naturally in our skin and make up 50% of the skin’s moisture barrier. But levels drop as we age, leading to wrinkles, rougher skin and visible signs of dehydration. This combined with sun damage and exposure to pollution can negatively effect the appearance of skin. PHD skin scientist Dr Helen Taylor says, ‘As well as drinking lots of water, topping up your ceramide levels with a supplement is a great way to help keep skin looking moisturised and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.’ Fortunately, it’s now easy to supplement ceramides, with Perfect7® Renewal. Its innovative ceramosides™ formula works from the inside out, for better looking, moisturised skin and has been scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in 60 days*. As well as the ceramosides™ capsule, Perfect7® Renewal Advanced also has a comprehensive multivitamin

Discover the joy of different cooking styles with NEFF’s Slide&Hide® multi-function ovens

T

he latest oven technology makes cooking everyday or entertaining large groups of friends a breeze, and there’s one oven that’s really won us over for its unique design and brilliant functions. The NEFF Slide&Hide® features a unique door that tucks effortlessly under the oven for maximum access, so you can baste, taste and check on cakes and casseroles really easily. Its CircoTherm® technology also allows you to cook, roast and bake different foods on any level with everything coming out tasting just as it should and no intermingling of flavours.

FULL STEAM AHEAD Steam is the latest buzzword in cooking as it produces delicious, succulent food healthily, reducing the need for too much oil or salt. The NEFF Slide&Hide® VarioSteam® and Full Steam functions help you do just that, locking in nutrients and enhancing flavours. And when your work is done, the Pyrolitic Self-Clean function will work its magic. What could be easier?

onion, diced 2-3 garlic cloves, crushed 1-2tbsp olive oil 400g arborio rice 100ml dry white wine 350ml chicken stock 2 sprigs fresh thyme 300ml mushroom stock made by infusing 40g dried porcini mushrooms and 300ml boiling water 30g butter 50-60g Parmesan, grated truffle shavings, to serve FOR THE MUSHROOMS 2tbsp olive oil 10g butter, cubed 350g mushrooms (such as ceps, girolles, morels), sliced leaves picked from 3 sprigs fresh thyme 1 In a large casserole dish, sauté the onion and garlic in the olive oil over a medium heat without colouring. Add the rice for 4-5mins, stirring until it’s just cracked, then add the wine and cook off for 2mins. 2 Add both stocks, the soaked dried mushrooms and thyme, and stir. Transfer the casserole to the oven on the Full Steam setting for 25-30mins. If you’re cooking on the hob, add the liquid a little at a time, stirring until it has been absorbed.

The Slide&Hide® oven door glides underneath for easy access to all areas

3 Meanwhile, for the mushrooms, heat 2tbsp olive oil and 10g butter in a large frying pan, then fry the mushrooms and thyme for 10mins. 4 Remove the risotto from the oven, stir in the 30g butter and Parmesan, along with half the fried mushrooms. Not only do NEFF ovens look good, they’re a pleasure to use

5 Serve topped with the remaining mushrooms and truffle shavings.
