POSTGRAD CERTIFICATE
A foundation degree (FD) is the academic equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree, level 4 and level 5. These courses are vocational, two years full-time or four years part-time and have a strong focus on developing in-demand skills. An FD can give you flexibility while you work, they are ideal for those who don’t want to commit to three full years of a degree but want to have the option to progress further down the line. These courses develop role-specific skills, making you more desirable when seeking employment. Bachelor’s degrees are the most widely studied undergraduate qualification and are usually studied over three years full-time or six years part-time.
FOUNDATION DEGREE FD
DIPLOMA
HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION DIPLOMA
These courses are designed to give you an in-depth understanding of one or more subjects, giving you the knowledge required to progress into your chosen sector. The Department for Education’s (DfE) Graduate Labour Market Statistics 2018 report highlights that graduates have higher rates of employment and earn on average £10,000 more than non-graduates. ‘Topping up’, those who have studied a foundation degree or HND may choose to ‘top-up’ to a full bachelor’s degree. To ‘top-up’ means to extend your study by one year full-time or two years part-time, there is no time limit on ‘topping up’ a foundation degree and you can therefore return to study at a later date. When ‘topping up,’ it is expected that your FD is in relevant modules studied, depending on your previous qualifications, you could enter at the second year or start the bachelor’s degree from the first year.
at each phase of the apprenticeship.
Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) qualifications could be the perfect fit for you, these are qualifications at level 4 and 5, normally studied over one year full-time and 2 years part-time, perfect if you want a higher qualification at a particular level. These qualifications are ideal for those who like to learn through doing, some include work placement opportunities and all have a range of assessments.
Apprenticeships can provide you with valuable onthe-job skills training, studying an apprenticeship could lead to becoming a permanent member of staff with your employer or a promotion. Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers either, with more and more mature students opting to study an apprenticeship to retrain or diversify their skill set to benefit their business and meet organisations recruitment training plans.
Our HNC and HND qualifications use study and practical-based elements to prepare you for a particular career. This combination makes these qualifications desirable to employers, equipping those who study them with the hands-on skills and knowledge required to gain employment or progress within their chosen career by achieving a more professional status. Some students find these courses to be valuable in preparing for degree study.
HIGHER PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS Earn while you learn with one of our higher apprenticeships. Attend College on a day or block-release basis while employed and working as a higher apprentice. We offer higher apprenticeships at levels 4 and 5, which gives you the option to undertake higherlevel study while working and earning a wage. Our apprenticeship programmes enable new and existing employees to gain industry specific skills and knowledge by releasing them for day or block-release with our expert staff and using or well-equipped facilities. If you are not currently in a relevant job that can offer you an apprenticeship, apprenticeship vacancies can be found at www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk or on our website. The apprentice must be working at least 30 hours per week and meet the entry requirements set by the apprenticeship and the employer. With a mentor in place, employees will have the workplace training and support, and manage their progress throughout their apprenticeship. We will ensure that both quality and standards are being met, carry out workplace assessments and award certification

These courses range from 19 weeks to two years with the method of delivery ensuring that you can work alongside your study. The whole University Centre environment is what I appreciate most. The tutors, the Welcome Team and technicians, the canteen and shop staff. York College is like one big family and I feel like the strong relationships within the staff, definitely rub off on the students.
I am forever grateful for whoever decided to open a space for mature students (University Centre). Having a quiet area to study as an older student away from the younger crowds was required and the space is very well laid out.

institute of technology appropriate curriculum, supported by research from the local universities. These employers are part of the governance of the IoT to ensure continued collaboration and long-term benefits for the region.
The Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Technology (IoT) – specialists in providing higher-level technical education and training.
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY The Institute of Technology is part of a government initiative for the College to work alongside local employers to understand what the skills needs are and then look at how the curriculum can be tailored to meet those needs. Through the Institute of Technology, employers will have the opportunity to support the content of courses and help ensure that students’ skills are up-to-date and relevant for the workplace. The IoT brought an investment of circa £10 million of capital funding into the region. York College has invested a proportion of this into industry-standard equipment to support the delivery of higher-level technical training. This massive training boost will enhance employment opportunities and ensure highly qualified individuals for the region’s employers.

WORKING WITH LOCAL EMPLOYERS The bid has received significant levels of employer support. Digital and engineering businesses, ViSR, CATCH, Skipton Building Society, GB Recruitment and ENGIE Fabricom recognised the need for investment in education to address their wider skills shortages and have signed up as employer partners to be involved in designing the

The IoT courses at York College University Centre provide an alternative to doing a full degree for those that want to develop their skills and gain higher-level qualifications in the areas of digital, engineering, manufacturing or construction, but don’t necessarily want to spend three years doing a full degree. Through a collaborative partnership with local employers, York College offers programmes to deliver higher-level technical skills on par with more academic routes and will achieve the same level of prestige as universities.

Foundation Degree (FD) Digital Technologies (Cybersecurity)
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY | 17
I chose this course as currently we live in a time where all devices are connected with each other to share information. Whenever that is to order a takeaway through a mobile app or to use your personal assistant to turn on the light bulb. For many of us technology became a huge part of our life, however, not all businesses in the past understood the importance of cybersecurity when producing such applications/devices. The importance of cybersecurity is on the rise, especially since the number of cyber-attacks have drastically increased since the first COVID-19 lockdown happened. Due to a huge demand in cybersecurity specialists, it means there will be more job opportunities in the future.
MATURE STUDENTS INTRO | 18
Mature students We’re proud at York College University Centre to have a thriving and vibrant community of mature students. Returning to higher education is a decision many make, however, it can be daunting and pose some difficult questions. Navigating student finance, how to manage your work-life and studies and even what course is the best to choose to enable you to reach your destination career goals, are all common and important questions.
yorkcollege.ac.uk
We want our mature students to not only succeed in their studies, but to thrive in the academic environment we have created here at the College. To achieve this, we have put in place a strong support network with mature students in mind. • Many of our courses have reduced or condensed hours. This is done as a consideration of the various commitments our students have, be they work, home-life or childcare. We strive to make sure you can still study alongside your other commitments.
• Closer tutor contact; you’ll create a close relationship with your tutors who will guide you throughout your studies here with us. Creating a unique relationship with your tutors lets them gauge your skills and talents. They can then help guide you in the best way to approach your studies, tackle your assignments and ultimately pursue your future career. • Employment focus; our courses are designed and taught with a clear focus on industry and post study employability. We realise many mature students seek out higher education as a gateway into a specific job role or career advancement. Structuring our courses around this means you’ll be work ready to pursue these avenues when you complete your studies. These are just some of the ways in which we strive to ensure our mature students thrive with us. To see some of these things first-hand or to talk to our tutors about the best way to achieve your ambitions, visit one of our Open Events.
We understand that it isn’t always possible to solely take time out to study, often our students have to juggle other commitments such as work or family life. Recognising this, we have designed a number of our courses to work alongside you and your life.
• Higher National Certificate/ Diploma Health & Social Care (part-time)
Some of the courses we offer are also ideal if you are already working within industry, but looking to progress your career. Studying one of our courses on day-release will give you the ability to continue to work and achieve that essential qualification.

Victoria BA (Hons) 3D Creative Practice “I chose York College University Centre as it is local, convenient and has fantastic course facilities and offers a course that I am interested in. It’s a time for me where I can concentrate solely on art and although I don’t have any particular career goals at the moment, I anticipate this may change further down the line. I am in currently in year two of my six-year part-time degree and am purely doing it for my own enjoyment. The workshops offer endless possibilities, and the supportive and accessible teaching staff have a ‘can do’ attitude offering no obstacles. The Learning Resource Centre staff are also extremely helpful. So far, I have found the technological skills most useful and am very much looking forward to figuring out more as I progress throughout the course.”

FURTHER AFIELD Mature STUDENTS Circumstances change, goals alter and we are more aware than ever of the importance of looking after our mental health and doing something we enjoy and feel passionate about. Our mixed age classes allow for cross-collaboration and sharing of ideas that can generate a wealth of knowledge and understanding beyond that found in textbooks.
Whilst the majority of our students are from the local area, our flexible learning approaches are also well suited to those who need to commute from further afield. By condensing our timetables where possible, and spreading courses over as few days, this helps to keep travel costs down and allows for a better work/ life balance.

OUR STUDENTS
RECENT GRADUATES And their future plans
We are extremely proud of our HE students, and rightfully so. Many of them have gone on to achieve incredible things or are heading towards a successful career. Here at York College University Centre, it is so important to us that we remain connected with our graduates and keep up-to-date with our current students. We just love sharing their successes with their peers and other prospective students, below we hear about their experiences so far: Charlotte completed the two-year Foundation Degree (FD) Media Make-up, Special Effects and Hair Design before enrolling for her final top up year on the BA (Hons). She hopes to remain at the College after graduating to complete a PGCE, where she will then be qualified to teach others whilst also working in the TV and film industry.
CHARLOTTE
BA (Hons) Media Make-up, Special Effects & Hair Design
“I have had a lot of brilliant opportunities doing work experience, attending conventions, and networking with many creatives and professionals. I aim to enter future trainee programmes, which without this course, I will have been unable to do. I have done paid work as a hair and makeup artist and have gradually built a large network of industry contacts thanks to the teaching this course has provided me with. The best thing about the course is 100% the tutors! Incredibly dedicated, enthusiastic, and all-round amazing tutors. They have not only supported my development and achievements as a make-up artist, but the College also supported me financially with a bursary in the first year which helped me tremendously when I needed it.”
yorkcollege.ac.uk
“I like to use mixed media and focus primarily on ceramics. I have a particular interested in ancient manufacturing techniques which favour sustainable methods, and often employ discarded items as tools for decoration. I have a diagnosis of autism which gives me an unusual vision of the world around me. From an early age I refused to conform to numerical concepts – and relied on my eyes to give a sense of aesthetic. Through my work, I question the traditional boundaries of historic styles and fashions, with the intention of prompting the viewer to say to themselves such things as ‘what if’, ‘why not’ or even ‘that’s impossible because’.”
Chris Kendall Photography
Henry has progressed from Level 1, 2 and 3 and is now in his final year of the BA (Hons) 3D Design & Creative Practice course and will be exhibiting at York Open Studios this year.
HENRY
BA (Hons) 3D Creative Practice
“At 28 after a few years of working untrained and unskilled, I woke up and had a eureka moment, it was time to re-apply as a mature student. York College University Centre have been excellent along my career path. Being a mature student is not easy, combining raising daughters, working full-time and studying, yet the tutors have accommodated my individual needs as and when needed.
JACK HNC Construction & the Built Environment
Working on a Branding, Identity and Implementation module, students were given a brief to come up with ideas for an advertising campaign for clients’ Airbnb, designed for a specific target audience. Their task was to produce three static poster adverts and one moving image animation, based around research, objectives, and outcomes. The students’ designs were judged by Publicis Media in London, with each student receiving constructive feedback on their work from the media agency.
Completing an adult plumbing course on an evening soon made me realise that education was not scary or unattainable. I was hooked! I passed my plumbing award and won the Guild of Building bronze medal where I was invited to an awards dinner with the York Mayor and that just made me want more. I managed to secure employment with a local plumbing contractor, passed level 2 & 3 in Plumbing and Heating and gained my gas engineer qualification. After some moral support from a friend, knowing it would test me after leaving school many years ago with very little in the way of qualifications, I enrolled on the HNC Construction course. When we have support from friends and family and the excellent York College University Centre tutors supporting us along our journey, anything can be achieved! The proof is in the qualifications and my most current job role. I went from unemployed and on benefits to Construction Site Manager in eight years!”
Second year student Matthew was delighted be announced as the winner of the project, with his prize being further work experience with industry experts Publicis Media. “It was a great experience. I really enjoyed getting someone from the industry to give me feedback, which allowed me to imagine what my future could be. Talking to Publicis Media helped me to understand the industry more and how it differs from college projects. Everyone’s submissions looked great but I’m happy to have won and I look forward to potentially working with Publicis Media in the future.”
