I chose to study at York College University Centre as they offered amazing facilities and the class sizes were fairly small, so I knew I’d have more one-to-one tuition and a more personal experience.
I received lots of support from my tutors while studying, they were all easy to talk to and get on with. I also found the facilities such as the University Centre and the Learning & Research Centre really useful while studying my degree.

Here at York College & University Centre, we offer a range of different qualifications covering various levels of study. Our qualifications include foundation degrees, bachelor’s degrees, BA top-ups, higher national certificates and diplomas (HNC/D), apprenticeships and a range of professional qualifications.
A foundation degree (FD) is the academic equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree, Level 4 and Level 5. These courses are vocational, two years full-time or four years part-time and have a strong focus on developing in-demand skills. A foundation degree can give you flexibility while you work and they are ideal for those who don’t want to commit to three full years of a degree but want to have the option to progress further down the line. These courses develop role-specific skills, to support your progression.
Bachelor’s degrees are the most widely studied undergraduate qualification and are usually studied over three years fulltime or six years part-time. These courses are designed to give you an in-depth understanding of one or more subjects, giving you the knowledge required to progress into your chosen sector.
‘Topping-up’ - those who have studied a foundation degree or HND may choose to ‘top-up’ to a full bachelor’s degree. To ‘top-up’ means to extend your study by one year full-time or two years part-time. There is no time limit on ‘topping-up’ a foundation degree and you can therefore return to
study at a later date. When ‘topping-up,’ it is expected that your foundation degree includes relevant modules. Depending on your previous qualifications, you could enter at the second year or start the bachelor’s degree from the first year.
Higher national certificate (HNC) and higher national diploma (HND) qualifications could be the perfect fit for you. These are qualifications at Level 4 and 5, normally studied over one year full-time and two years part-time, perfect if you want a higher qualification at a particular level. These qualifications are ideal for those who like to learn through doing. Some include work placement opportunities and all have a range of assessments.
Our HNC and HND qualifications use study and practical-based elements to prepare you for a particular career. This combination makes these qualifications desirable to employers, equipping those who study them with the hands-on skills and knowledge required to gain employment or progress within their chosen career by achieving a more professional status. Some students find these courses to be valuable in preparing for degree study.
Apprenticeships give you the option to study while working and earning a wage. Our apprenticeship programmes enable new and existing employees to gain industry-specific skills and knowledge by releasing them for day or block-release with our expert staff, using our well-equipped facilities. If you are not currently in a relevant job that can offer you an apprenticeship, apprenticeship vacancies can be found at www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk or on our website.
To study an apprenticeship, you must be working at least 30 hours per week and meet the entry requirements set by the apprenticeship and the employer. With a mentor in place, employees will have the workplace training and support to help manage their progress throughout the apprenticeship.
Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers either, with more and more mature students opting to study an apprenticeship to retrain or diversify their skill set to benefit their business and meet organisations’ recruitment training plans.
Our professional qualifications will enable you to gain an industry-recognised qualification to enhance your career prospects or facilitate a career change. These courses range from 19 weeks to two years, with the method of delivery ensuring that you can work alongside your study. Our professional qualifications have been chosen as they are industry-recognised and respected by professionals in the UK and beyond, ensuring your chosen qualification will develop your skills and knowledge to aid progression.
The teacher training qualifications we offer at York College University Centre are validated by the University of Huddersfield, and are the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Certificate in Education (CertEd). These are ideal for those who are wishing to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. This includes teaching in Further Education (including FE colleges), Higher Education, community learning and development, libraries, archives and information services and work-based learning.

Studying at York College University Centre has been a great experience. My tutors provided a fantastic learning environment while granting the support I needed to succeed.
I’ve met so many amazing people while studying here.
The Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Technology (IoT) – specialists in providing higher-level technical education and training.
The Institute of Technology is part of a government initiative for the College to work alongside local employers and further and higher education institutions to understand what the skills needs are and then look at how the curriculum can be tailored to meet those needs. Through the Institute of Technology, employers will have the opportunity to support the content of courses and help ensure that students’ higher and technical skills are up-to-date and relevant for the workplace.
The IoT brought an investment of circa £10 million of capital funding into the region. York College & University Centre has invested a proportion of this into industry-standard equipment to support the delivery of higher-level technical training. This significant investment will enhance employment opportunities and ensure highly qualified individuals for the region’s employers.
Our IoT courses provide the opportunity for students to develop their skills and gain higher-level qualifications in the areas of digital, engineering, manufacturing or construction. Through a collaborative partnership with local employers, we offer programmes to deliver higher-level technical skills on par with more academic routes and will achieve the same level of prestige as universities.

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications, such as Foundation Degrees, Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas. They are an option for young people starting their career and for adults looking to upskill or retrain.
HTQs have been approved against employer developed standards, also known as occupational standards. This ensures that learners gain the skills that employers want, and employers can be confident that learners have the knowledge, skills and behaviours for a particular specialist role.
We’re proud at York College & University Centre to have a thriving and vibrant community of mature students (21+) who have chosen to return to education. Returning to education is a decision many make; however, it can be daunting and pose some difficult questions. Navigating funding and finance, how to manage your work-life and studies and even what course is the best to choose to enable you to reach your destination career goals, are all common and important questions.
We want all of our students to not only succeed in their studies, but to thrive in the academic environment we have created here at the College. To achieve this, we have put in place a strong support network with those returning to education in mind.
• Many of our courses have reduced or condensed hours. This is done as a consideration of the various commitments our students have, be that work, home-life or childcare. We strive to make sure you can still study alongside your other commitments.
• Closer tutor contact - you’ll create a close relationship with your tutors who will guide you throughout your studies here with us. Creating a unique relationship with your tutors lets them gauge your skills and talents. They can then help guide you in the best way to approach your studies, tackle your assignments and ultimately pursue your future career.
• Employment focus - our courses are designed and taught with a clear focus on industry and post-study employability. We realise many mature students seek out further and higher education as a gateway into a specific job role or career advancement. Structuring our courses around this means you’ll be work ready to pursue these avenues when you complete your studies.
These are just some of the ways in which we strive to ensure that the students who are returning to education thrive with us. To see some of these things first-hand or to talk to our tutors about the best way to achieve your ambitions, visit one of our Open Events.
We understand that it isn’t always possible to take time out to study full-time. Often our students have to juggle other commitments such as work or family life. Recognising this, we have designed a number of our courses to work alongside you and your life.
Some of the courses we offer are also ideal if you are already working within industry, but looking to progress your career. Studying one of our courses on day-release will give you the ability to continue to work and achieve that essential qualification.
I chose to study at York College University Centre to further my career progression within Portkabin.
I’ve had a really enjoyable experience and it’s been useful to be able to combine my studies with my working week. My tutors have been really supportive and have provided so much help throughout my time here.
This course will be really useful when applying for project management roles in the future and will help me to progress successfully in my career.

For those requiring accommodation in York, many of our students will source their own living arrangements prior to their course starting. However, if you are struggling to find a place, visit the Accommodation page on our website for further advice and guidance.

HTQ HNC Construction Management for England (Site Supervisor)
“I’d been interested in civil engineering from a young age, and studying Construction & the Built Environment at York College University Centre gave me the opportunity to explore this.
The HNC provided a great mix of practical work out in the field and theory work. All of my tutors were very supportive and I made some great friends.
My overall experience of York College University Centre was brilliant. The tutors always made time for us and the one-to-one support is incredible. The experience I gained helped me to become workready and was great preparation for my current role.
I’ve now progressed to study the HND in Civil Engineering at Leeds Beckett University and am employed as a Trainee Site Engineer with Lindum Construction. I couldn’t have got here without the support of York College University Centre.”
“I chose to study the FD Children’s Development & Learning as I really enjoyed studying a Level 3 Childcare course here, so it seemed a natural choice to progress to the University Centre.
I knew I wanted to develop my knowledge and skills further, and York College University Centre offered that extra level of support. My experience was amazing, I had access to brilliant resources and helpful tutors who taught me right the way through my education at York College.
I currently work in a nursery, putting my skills into practice, and I may progress to the BA (Hons) Leading Children’s Development in the future.”
“I decided to choose this route of study as I’d worked in the beauty industry for a long time and decided I wanted to pass on my knowledge and experience through teaching. As I was studying during covid, I learned how to teach online using different resources, which is a real skill. I also really enjoyed my placement, it was great to put my skills into practice.
Studying at York College University Centre was great, the location is very convenient and the flexible study model meant I could fit the course in around my other commitments. My tutors were always very supportive and were there for me every step of the way.
I’m now teaching and have since completed my Assessor’s Award.”
“I wanted to challenge myself and learn new skills, and I’d always enjoyed computing so studying the FD Digital Technologies (Cybersecurity) seemed like a great next step for me.
York College University Centre provides excellent facilities and a flexible study model. It was a really convenient way of studying and I benefitted from being taught by amazing tutors, who helped me massively in my studies.
I’m now progressing to study a top-up degree at York St John University, before I enter the industry.”
