Studying at York College University Centre felt more personal than being in a large university environment, and the class sizes meant we as students had more one-to-one time with our tutors. The facilities such as the Mac suite and different workshops were great and the library spaces were really useful places to study. Tanyarat

Qualifications EXPLAINED Undergraduate qualifications are courses that are an academic step-up from A Levels or equivalent Level 3 courses. Our undergraduate qualifications include foundation degrees, bachelor’s degrees, BA top-ups, higher national certificates and diplomas (HNC/D), higher apprenticeships, and higher professional qualifications.

POSTGRAD CERTIFICATE
A foundation degree (FD) is the academic equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree, Level 4 and Level 5. These courses are vocational, two years full-time or four years part-time and have a strong focus on developing in-demand skills. A foundation degree can give you flexibility while you work and they are ideal for those who don’t want to commit to three full years of a degree but want to have the option to progress further down the line. These courses develop role-specific skills, making you more desirable when seeking employment. Bachelor’s degrees are the most widely studied undergraduate qualification and are usually studied over three years full-time or six years part-time.
FOUNDATION DEGREE FD
DIPLOMA
HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION DIPLOMA
These courses are designed to give you an in-depth understanding of one or more subjects, giving you the knowledge required to progress into your chosen sector. The Department for Education’s (DfE) Graduate Labour Market Statistics 2021 report highlights that graduates have higher rates of employment and earn on average £10,000 more than non-graduates. ‘Topping-up’ - those who have studied a foundation degree or HND may choose to ‘top-up’ to a full bachelor’s degree. To ‘top-up’ means to extend your study by one year full-time or two years part-time. There is no time limit on ‘topping-up’ a foundation degree and you can therefore return to study at a later date. When ‘topping-up,’ it is expected that your foundation degree includes relevant modules. Depending on your previous qualifications, you could enter at the second year or start the bachelor’s degree from the first year.
Higher national certificate (HNC) and higher national diploma (HND) qualifications could be the perfect fit for you. These are qualifications at Level 4 and 5, normally studied over one year fulltime and two years part-time, perfect if you want a higher qualification at a particular level. These qualifications are ideal for those who like to learn through doing. Some include work placement opportunities and all have a range of assessments. Our HNC and HND qualifications use study and practical-based elements to prepare you for a particular career. This combination makes these qualifications desirable to employers, equipping those who study them with the hands-on skills and knowledge required to gain employment or progress within their chosen career by achieving a more professional status. Some students find these courses to be valuable in preparing for degree study.
HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS Earn while you learn with one of our higher apprenticeships. Attend College on a day or block-release basis while employed and working as a higher apprentice. We offer higher apprenticeships at Level 4, which give you the option to undertake higher-level study while working and earning a wage. Our apprenticeship programmes enable new and existing employees to gain industry-specific skills and knowledge by releasing them for day or block-release with our expert staff, using our well-equipped facilities. If you are not currently in a relevant job that can offer you an apprenticeship, apprenticeship vacancies can be found at www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk or on our website. To study an apprenticeship, you must be working at least 30 hours per week and meet the entry requirements set by the apprenticeship and the employer. With a mentor in place, employees will have the workplace training and support to help manage their progress throughout the apprenticeship. We will ensure that both quality and standards are being met, and will carry out workplace assessments and award certification at each phase of the apprenticeship.
Apprenticeships can provide you with valuable on-the-job skills training. Studying an apprenticeship could enable you to become a permanent member of staff with your employer or receive a promotion. Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers either, with more and more mature students opting to study an apprenticeship to retrain or diversify their skill set to benefit their business and meet organisations’ recruitment training plans.
HIGHER PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Our higher professional qualifications will enable you to gain an industry-recognised qualification to enhance your career prospects or facilitate a career change. These courses range from 19 weeks to two years, with the method of delivery ensuring that you can work alongside your study. Our professional qualifications have been chosen as they are industry-recognised and respected by professionals in the UK and beyond, ensuring your chosen qualification will develop your skills and knowledge to aid progression.
TEACHER TRAINING The teacher training qualifications we offer at York College are validated by the University of Huddersfield, and are the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Certificate in Education (CertEd). These are ideal for those who are wishing to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. This includes teaching in Further Education (including FE colleges), Higher Education, community learning and development, libraries, archives and information services and work-based learning.

My degree offers intensive drama school training and many links with the professional world, as well as indepth actor development on so many levels that will help me grow, not just as an actor, but also as a person with a deep self-awareness on a physical, mental and emotional level. I also love that the course feels intimate, rather than it being a vast university campus. This means that we can receive more bespoke support and have access to resources more easily.

Additionally, having different levels of study and different types of students really does draw focus away from just being in a “university bubble” and encourages you to focus on having fun and enjoying your studies. BA (Hons) Acting for Stage & Screen
I’ve always had a passion for make-up and drama so studying a media makeup degree was the perfect choice for me. I began studying on a Level 2 qualification at York College and have since progressed through to degree level. My tutors were the best tutors anyone could have had, they were always so supportive and helpful. I’ve learned so many new skills and had a fantastic experience at York College University Centre. Since graduating, I’ve begun to work as a freelance make-up artist. BA (Hons) Media Make-up, Special Effects & Hair Design

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY | 16
institute of technology The Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Technology (IoT) – specialists in providing higher-level technical education and training.
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
WHY STUDY AT AN IOT?
The Institute of Technology is part of a government initiative for the College to work alongside local employers and further and higher education institutions to understand what the skills needs are and then look at how the curriculum can be tailored to meet those needs. Through the Institute of Technology, employers will have the opportunity to support the content of courses and help ensure that students’ higher and technical skills are up-to-date and relevant for the workplace.
The IoT courses at York College University Centre provide the opportunity for students to develop their skills and gain higher-level qualifications in the areas of digital, engineering, manufacturing or construction. Through a collaborative partnership with local employers, we offer programmes to deliver higher-level technical skills on par with more academic routes and will achieve the same level of prestige as universities.
yorkcollege.ac.uk/university-centre
The IoT brought an investment of circa £10 million of capital funding into the region. York College has invested a proportion of this into industry-standard equipment to support the delivery of higher-level technical training. This massive training boost will enhance employment opportunities and ensure highly qualified individuals for the region’s employers.
WORKING WITH LOCAL EMPLOYERS The bid has received significant levels of employer support. Digital and engineering businesses, ViSR, CATCH, Skipton Building Society, GB Recruitment and ENGIE Fabricom recognised the need for investment in education to address their wider skills shortages and have signed up as employer partners to be involved in designing the appropriate curriculum, supported by research from the local universities. These employers are part of the governance of the IoT to ensure continued collaboration and long-term benefits for the region.

INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY | 17
I’d studied a Level 3 course at College previously so I knew that York College offered fantastic tutors and a nice atmosphere, so it seemed like a great next step to study at the University Centre. York College is an Institute of Technology that offers specialist facilities such as the cybersecurity lab, which really enhances student learning. Studying at York College University Centre felt more personal than a larger university environment, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I’m now planning on further study to top-up my foundation degree to a full BSc (Hons) degree. In the future I’d like a career in either the computer science or cybersecurity industries.

MATURE STUDENTS | 18
Mature students yorkcollege.ac.uk yorkcollege.ac.uk/university-centre
We’re proud at York College University Centre to have a thriving and vibrant community of mature students. Returning to higher education is a decision many make, however, it can be daunting and pose some difficult questions. Navigating student finance, how to manage your work-life and studies and even what course is the best to choose to enable you to reach your destination career goals, are all common and important questions. We want our mature students to not only succeed in their studies, but to thrive in the academic environment we have created here at the College. To achieve this, we have put in place a strong support network with mature students in mind. • Many of our courses have reduced or condensed hours. This is done as a consideration of the various commitments our students have, be that work, home-life or childcare. We strive to make sure you can still study alongside your other commitments.
• Closer tutor contact - you’ll create a close relationship with your tutors who will guide you throughout your studies here with us. Creating a unique relationship with your tutors lets them gauge your skills and talents. They can then help guide you in the best way to approach your studies, tackle your assignments and ultimately pursue your future career. • Employment focus - our courses are designed and taught with a clear focus on industry and post-study employability. We realise many mature students seek out higher education as a gateway into a specific job role or career advancement. Structuring our courses around this means you’ll be work ready to pursue these avenues when you complete your studies. These are just some of the ways in which we strive to ensure our mature students thrive with us. To see some of these things first-hand or to talk to our tutors about the best way to achieve your ambitions, visit one of our Open Events.
We understand that it isn’t always possible to solely take time out to study. Often our students have to juggle other commitments such as work or family life. Recognising this, we have designed a number of our courses to work alongside you and your life.
• Higher National Certificate Construction & the Built Environment
Some of the courses we offer are also ideal if you are already working within industry, but looking to progress your career. Studying one of our courses on day-release will give you the ability to continue to work and achieve that essential qualification.
• Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance Awards
OUR FLEXIBLE COURSES • BA (Hons) 3D Creative Practice (part-time) • Certificate in Education/PGCE (part-time) • FD/BA Children’s Development & Learning (one day per week - full-time)
• Higher National Certificate/Diploma Engineering (Two Pathways) • Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling • Level 5 CIPD Associate Diploma in People Management Our higher apprenticeships also allow you to learn while you earn, getting that valuable hands-on learning, while receiving a wage: • Level 4 Construction Site Supervisor • Level 4 Higher Engineering (Electrical/Mechanical)
• FD/BA (Hons) Business Management (full-time) • FD Digital Technologies (Cybersecurity) (two days per week)
After having my child, I didn’t think that university or studying for a degree would be an option for me without moving away, so I was really pleased when I found out that this degree was offered at York College University Centre. This course has been very fun and educational, and my tutors are very understanding. When I was having some issues, they were always there to help get me back on track. I’ve got a huge interest in art and graphics, and this degree has taught me a variety of skills, from book making to web design and photography. After I’ve completed my studies, I’d like to work part-time and then progress to full-time work in some sort of design role. In the future I’d like to create my own business selling my art.

YORK, a compact city with a huge range of attractionS and opportunities for you to experience and enjoy
York’s blend of flourishing city life and quaint individuality makes it the perfect place to either keep, or make home. York’s thriving city life is just as apparent as its historical heritage. Modern bars sit inside ancient buildings, coffee shops sit shoulder to shoulder with Gothic churches and boutiques line medieval streets. York offers all the amenities you would expect of a modern 21st century city but surrounded by some of the UK’s most iconic and beautiful scenery. This unique blend makes York one of the most desirable cities in the UK to live and work in.
Following over 20 years of growth and development of higher education at York College University Centre, we continue to be amazed by the fantastic accomplishments of our students. Inspired by the level of perseverance they continually show, many of our students successfully complete their studies alongside demanding careers and hectic schedules, family commitments and for some, even health issues, not to mention the everyday worries and stresses faced by us all. Our annual Graduation Ceremony is the perfect way to celebrate coming to the end of your studies with us and to recognise the hardwork and commitment
you have dedicated over the last few years. All successful completers of any higher education course, whether that is a full honours FD/BA degree, higher national certificate/diploma, higher apprenticeship or higher professional qualification are invited to graduate, surrounded by friends and family in the beautiful setting of York Minster. In addition to our prestigious Graduation Ceremony, a number of courses organise end-of-year shows and subject specialist celebrations to enable students to present their Final Major Projects to an audience.

ALUMNI RECENT GRADUATES And their future plans We are extremely proud of our students, and rightfully so. Many of them have gone on to achieve incredible things or are heading towards a successful career. Here at York College University Centre, it is so important to us that we remain connected with our graduates and keep up-to-date with our current students. We just love sharing their successes with their peers and other prospective students, below we hear about their experiences: “I was working in the construction industry and had always focused on the more practical side, so studying this course gave me a great opportunity to learn more about the legal and operational elements of the industry. It was great to have more of an in-depth knowledge of contracts and the legal information in the industry. I chose York College University Centre as it was local, convenient and the study model meant it was easier to fit around my work commitments than other options.
GLENN
Glenn recently graduated from his HNC Construction & the Built Environment programme.
I enjoyed my experience at York College University Centre, it was great to get back into learning again and be taught by tutors who are specialists in their fields. I now own a joinery company, and studying the HNC really helped me to learn lots of new skills, including the legalities of running my own construction business.”

“I’d always had a passion for make-up and art, so I decided to pursue a media make-up degree to explore my creativity. I chose to study at York College University Centre despite the commute, as it offered a degree that covered all disciplines, including wig work. My experience at York College University Centre has been amazing. I’ve learned so many skills that I never would have thought I’d learn and my tutors were great; they always took time to support me. Studying at York College University Centre provided me with lots of contacts and industry knowledge, and I’m now using the skills I’ve learned as a makeup artist for TV and film.”
AMY
Amy studied the two-year Foundation Degree (FD) Media Make-up, Special Effects & Hair Design before studying the top-up year. She has recently graduated from the BA (Hons) Media Make-up, Special Effects & Hair Design degree.

“I decided to choose this route of study as I’d worked in the beauty industry for a long time and decided I wanted to pass on my knowledge and experience through teaching. As I was studying during covid, I learned how to teach online using different resources, which is a real skill. I also really enjoyed my placement, it was great to put my skills into practice.
NATALIE
Natalie recently graduated from her Certificate in Education (Lifelong Learning) programme.
Studying at York College University Centre was great, the location is very convenient and the flexible study model meant I could fit the course in around my other commitments. My tutors were always very supportive and were there for me every step of the way. I’m now teaching and have since completed my Assessor’s Award.”
“I’d come from a journalistic background and wanted a fresh start, so I decided to pursue a career in counselling. I was interested in the counselling route because I thought I was a good listener, but when I started the course, I realised I knew nothing. Studying has made me a much better listener and it’s made me a better person; I’m more mindful of myself and others. I chose to study at York College University Centre as it offered well respected counselling qualifications at various levels. The course offer and quality was amazing. My tutors were fantastically supportive and helpful, and the University Centre space was a great resource. My experience at York College University Centre was amazing. It was challenging but I’ve learnt so much and grown as a person. Since graduation, I’ve gained employment as a counsellor at Disability Plus, helping to counsel others with cerebral palsy like myself.”

The funding you are specifically entitled to will depend on whether you are a full or part-time student; if you have previously studied at a higher education level; which country you have been living in and when you start your course. Additional funding is also available for students who have a disability and those who have children or other dependents.
