elcome to this year’s fall/winter edition of W The Complete
Engineer. We have had a wonderful fall with lots of activity, including the announcement of new research facilities and a busy orientation for 730 first-year engineering students. In the last year, we have welcomed five new faculty members who now call the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science home.
This September, thanks to funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Ministry of Research and Innovation, we opened the Reactor Materials Testing Laboratory, a state-of-the-art, $17-million facility that will support the development of safe and economical nuclear power for the future. In addition, through the energy and support of our faculty, staff, students, alumni and government, we have undertaken more than $6-million worth of renovations and renewals of our teaching and research facilities within our departments, and two new research facilities are planned in the civil engineering department. Our planned Innovation Commons is considered a transformational leap toward the future of engineering. To be located at 67 Union Street, it will provide modern educational and research space in the heart of the campus.
This is an exciting time for the faculty, as you’ll discover by reading the stories in this issue. Interested in what you find in The Complete Engineer? Please come visit campus and see innovation in action!
