Honda ramps up the

FIRST DRIVE

2017 CR-V

Jim Robinson

Metroland Media VICTORIA, BC: It was (I think) the fall of 2000 and I was driving a little tin box from Japan with righthand drive and four-speed manual transmission gingerly around Toronto. It was called a Honda CR-V and the reason I was testing it was Honda heard Toyota was going to bring its own little tin box called the RAV4 to Canada. Just so Toyota couldn’t get all the headlines, Honda imported 12 right-hand drive CR-Vs for inhouse testing and evaluation and to hand out to the press as some kind of preemptive strike. I recall being more amused than anything else. But little did I know I was driving on the leading edge of the compact crossover that is now sweeping all before it in North America.

On the outside, the daring styling seen on the new Civic has found its way to the CR-V.

The compact sedan has been perennially the king of sellers in this country. But this summer compact CUVs surpassed sedans and it looks like the momentum is unstoppable.

The 2017 Honda CR-V compact crossover has been completely re-thought and re-engineered with high levels of fit and finish and standard content.

The Honda Civic remains Canada’s top selling car and has been so for the past 18 years. And based on sales to date it should remain there for a 19th straight year. The same cannot be said for the CR-V, which is considered a truck not a car. CR-V is currently third in segment for Canadian total sales and second in terms of total retail sales. So when it came time to plan for the fourth generation, 2017 CR-V, Honda officials looked at the situation and came to the conclusion it was just too staid and frankly admitted that during the press briefing in Victoria. They identified four problem

areas – conservative styling, basic performance, plain cabin experience and moderate value. The first thing to address was power, but with economy. Like the Civic, the CR-V is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo inline four-cylinder producing 190 hp and 179 lb/ft of torque on regular fuel with a CVT transmission. All of the four trim levels come with all-wheel-drive, the exception being the base model, which also offers front-wheel-drive. By reducing the number of blades inside the turbo from 11 to nine, Honda has been able to improve fuel consumption, which is 8.4/7.0L/100 km city/highway for the FWD and 8.7/7.2L/100 km

for the AWD. “Real Time AWD” is what Honda calls its system and it relies on a centre transfer case that can route up to 40 per cent of torque to the rear wheels. You can actually see it in action on the driver info screen where blue arrows point to where the grip is going. On the outside, the daring styling seen on the new Civic has found its way to the CR-V with aggressive fenders sticking out from the body, big wheels to fill the intentionally large wheel wells and liberal use of LED running and taillights with full LED headlights available. Probably the biggest change is Turn to page W3

Q5 adds luxury and innovation SAN JOSE DEL CABOS, Mexico – It’s hard to believe that the Q5 has been with us since 2009 and, apart from a face-lift in 2013, there hasn’t been that much of a design change since its introduction. Not that it really needed it; the Q5 has proved itself in the Audi stable with strong sales throughout its lifespan. That being said, Audi has introduced a brand new model for 2018. Totally redesigned from the ground up, the second generation has been tasked with replacing Audi’s best selling original, but with new sporty exterior styling, upgraded interior sophistication and a very clever new AWD system the Q5 has certainly surpassed the already high standard set by its predecessor. The 2018 Q5 is built on a stiffer modified MLB platform with very minor changes to the over-all size of the vehicle; the wheelbase has been increased by 12 millimetres and overall body length by 34 mm. The width and height remain the same. The interior passenger space stays relatively unchanged and the cargo area gains 10 litres bringing it up to 550 litres. The Canadian model will come with a reworked turbocharged, 2.0litre inline four-cylinder engine, but it has been tweaked to push out 252 hp and 273 lb/ft of torque. It will now be linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Unfortunately, this will be the only engine choice for the Canadian market, but there are rumours that there will be a 345 hp, V6 engine available in the SQ5 later in 2017. Disappointingly, there will be no diesel engine choices available in Canada. What makes the Q5 stand out from the crowd is the clever allnew Ultra Quattro AWD system. The vehicle, when driving in normal conditions, pushes 100 per cent of the power to the front wheels by means of two clutches. An electronically controlled clutch mounted behind the transmission disengages the prop shaft and a second clutch opens up in the rear differential, allowing the Turn to page W4
