2021 York Lions Football Yearbook

Season outlook There is no shortage of energy in the York Lions football locker room as the team gets set to hit the field for the first time in nearly two years. But head coach Warren Craney and his coaching staff have been preparing the group for this moment since the day the world shut down. Team meetings, home gyms, an outdoor High Performance Centre – anything to keep players engaged during a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. Now the Lions intend to take the OUA by surprise in 2021, hoping two years’ worth of preparation will come in handy against an array of able opponents in the OUA. Craney says in training camp it appears all the extra preparation paid off. It resulted in an efficient camp that has brought high expectations. “This is the best football team I’ve seen since I’ve been here. I think this team speaks a lot to our depth. Our coaches have done a great job in terms of recruiting high-impact players and have solved a lot of depth

The biggest change on the offence arguably comes at quarterback. Brett Hunchak, York’s all-time leader in passing yards, touchdowns, completions and attempts, has transitioned to Craney’s coaching staff. Noah Craney will start this year, and his coach believes his athleticism will help him excel as the Lions’ starting quarterback. They will all play behind an offensive line that is anchored by secondyear tackles Evan Anseeuw and Logan Scott. When asked about the defence, Craney had trouble coming up with the proper words to describe the group. He settled on “insanity.” On the defensive line, tackle Kwadwo Boahen has been unblockable all camp. He will be flanked by Nate Brennan and Kevin Musai, who round out the veteran defensive line, and new addition Jason Janvier-Messier, a top 2020 recruit who has left good impressions on his teammates and football operations staff after proving himself to be a hard worker on the field and in the gym during the 2020 shut-down.

issues that we’ve had in the past. It’s the fastest football team I’ve ever seen on the field, both on offence and defence.” One of the reasons behind the 12-year coach’s excitement is his new addition into the offensive coordinator role, Tommy Denison. Denison was hired in March 2020, and while it may have taken him a while to set foot on York’s campus, he has his fingerprints all over the 2021 Lions offence. Despite that, Denison’s tried-and-true system has made the Lions offence look dynamite. Leading the way will be fifth-year receiver Alex Daley. His coach believes he could be a CFL player right now and he was among the OUA’s leaders in his stat lines during the last two seasons. Retson Daley, Alex’s brother, is another Daley set to make a big impact on the Lions, possessing the abilities NCAA Division I student-athlete. Running back Darnel Jarrett burst onto the scene in 2019 with authority and will be looking to follow-up that campaign with an even bigger one this season. Jaxon Hume, a two-sport athlete also competing in track & field, brings size, speed and athleticism as a return specialist. He arrived on the scene in 2019 in a big way, scoring his first career touchdown on a 107-yard kick-off return against Ottawa in Week 5. More of that is expected this year as Hume showcased his impressive quickness over the duration of Lions training camp.

YORK LIONS

Behind them, Matt Dean, Dawson Davis and Desi Dixon Jr. make up the “triple D linebackers,” as Craney calls them, and are dominating figures showcasing a great deal of chemistry together in camp. In the secondary, Daniel Amoako has stepped up into a leadership position along with the team’s 2019 leading tackler, Talik Ehouman. COVID has brought a lot of uncertainty to our world – and the OUA standings are likely to be affected by that in 2021. With no football played in 2020, and a shortened six-game schedule upcoming, the OUA is sure to be hit with many surprise performers. Craney believes his team well-suited to be one of the surprises. “I think this team can accomplish great things. Our team’s goal is to host a playoff game this year. And I believe it’s something we can do.” This year, there are East and West Divisions in football and eight teams will make the playoffs. The post-season will begin with the top seed in each division hosting the fourth-place team while the second and third seeds do battle. The following week will be the semifinals, with the remaining two teams in each division facing off against each other. On Saturday, Nov. 20, the 113th Yates Cup championship will cap off the OUA campaign with each division’s winner competing for the trophy.

Head Coach WARREN CRANEY wcraney@yorku.ca @YULionsFootball

Warren Craney joined the Lions football team as head coach in 2010 and is the ninth coach in program history. Craney made a name for himself on the international scene and was on the Team Canada coaching staff from 2009-16. As head coach, he led the junior national team to the gold medal at the 2016 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) U19 world championships in Harbin, China, with a dominant 24-6 victory over the United States in the final. The event marked the second straight time he was the head coach of the junior national team as he also guided the squad to a silver-medal finish in 2014 in Kuwait. His other stints with the U19 team included serving as the defensive coordinator in 2012 and 2009, winning gold and silver medals, respectively, at the world championships, and coaching at seven straight International Bowls in Texas (201016).

Under his guidance on defence, Craney’s student-athletes won four Presidents’ Trophies, awarded to the nation’s top defensive player, and one J.P. Metras Trophy as the top down lineman in the CIS. One of those Presidents’ Trophies winners was Cory Greenwood, who went on to play in the National Football League (NFL) with the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions and is now a linebacker with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). In addition, 13 first-team all-Canadian awards were given to defensive players under his direction. A native of Montreal, Craney joined Concordia’s coaching staff after a three-year stint as the defensive coordinator at Vanier College. Throughout his coaching career, which has spanned nearly two decades, he has also served as a guest coach at the University of Michigan Football School and University of Nebraska in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and with several teams in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Craney and his wife, Cara, are the proud parents of five children, including son Noah who is in his fourth year with the Lions football team. Their eldest daughter, Madison, is a graduate of the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, where she was a varsity synchronized swimmer, Kennedy is a student at York, Ethan is in 12th grade and Quinn is in grade five.

He was also part of the coaching staffs for seven consecutive East West Bowls (2009-15). Craney came to York from Concordia University, where he spent seven seasons as the defensive coordinator and three before that as the defensive line coach. While there, the Stingers were a perennial top 10 team and the defence was at or near the top of all statistical categories in Quebec and Canada.

Assistant coaches SAMMY OKPRO

TOMMY DENISON

Sammy Okpro was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Lions in 2017 and was reunited with head coach Warren Craney, under whom he played for four years at Concordia University.

Tommy Denison was named the offensive coordinator for the Lions in April 2020. He has a proven track record of success in U SPORTS with both the University of Toronto and Saint Mary’s University. Known for running a dynamic no-huddle offence, he has produced some impressive turnarounds in a short time.

Defensive Coordinator

Okpro came to York from the Edmonton Huskies in the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL), where he was the defensive coordinator from 2015-17 and, before that, spent two seasons as the defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator. Under his guidance, the Huskies had the No. 1-ranked defence in the CJFL in 2016 as the team went from 1-7 to 5-3 in one year. He had a tremendous playing career with the Stingers. In his four seasons he was a three-time U SPORTS first-team all-Canadian and earned RSEQ all-star honours three times (2005-07). He was also the team MVP in his final season, and following that he was selected in the fourth round (25th overall) by the Edmonton Eskimos in the 2008 Canadian Football League (CFL) entry draft. He also represented Canada three times, including winning the silver medal at the 2011 IFAF senior world championships in Austria, where he was named to the first tournament all-star team and earned MVP honours in the gold medal game.

As a player, Denison put together an incredible three-year run as the quarterback of the Queen’s Gaels that returned the program to prominence. He won back-to-back Hec Crighton Trophies (2002-03) as national player of the year, just the second repeat winner in the history of the award, and in 2002 was the first Canadian university quarterback to pass for more than 3,000 yards in a single season. His best two passing seasons with the Gaels both remain among the U SPORTS top 10.

BRETT HUNCHAK

Nathaniel “Shake” Griffith returned to the Lions coaching staff in 2016 as an offensive assistant after previously serving in the same role in 2014, and in 2019 he will serve as the special teams coordinator. He is also the offensive coordinator with the York Region Lions in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).

Arguably the greatest quarterback in York Lions history has returned to the program in 2021 as quarterbacks coach. Brett Hunchak, a 2019 social science graduate of York, ranks first all-time at York in yards, touchdowns, attempts and completions, and has finished among the top five in the OUA in many statistical categories over the years.

He spent three seasons with the Lions as a receiver (2010-12) and was also a team captain. Prior to coming to York, he played for the Brampton Bulldogs in the OVFL and at Vanier College in Montreal. He also served as a receivers coach for the Bulldogs for two seasons. Griffith is also the full-time equipment services and stadium attendant in York University’s Athletics & Recreation department.

YORK LIONS

In 2019, while running the offence for the Varsity Blues, he oversaw a unit that improved by 114 yards and 12.5 points per game. The Blues led the country in passing yards and touchdowns and were seventh overall in total yards. Two years earlier, as the associate head coach (offence) in Halifax, his Huskies offence ranked ninth nationally one year after finishing 21st in the country. Denison’s coaching background also includes serving as the head coach of the GTA All-Stars in the National Football Conference (NFC) in 2016 and that squad’s offensive coordinator for four years prior, as well as stints with multiple club teams in Ontario and British Columbia.

Quarterbacks

He received the team’s offensive MVP award in 2016 and was an irreplaceable leader for the Lions offence over his five seasons with the squad. After his lengthy U SPORTS career, Hunchak played professionally overseas in 2021 in Sweden’s Superserien for the Stockholm Mean Machines as one of the team’s quarterbacks. He is also the older brother of Calgary Stampeders receiver Colton Hunchak, also a former Lion.

assistant coaches DAKOTA VINE

MACK CHAPMAN

Dakota Vine joins the Lions coaching staff to work with the running backs for the 2021 season. Prior to joining the Lions, Vine has experience in minor football coaching special teams for the Etobicoke Eagles. Away from the gridiron, Vine is the former cohost of the At the 55 Podcast, which covers OUA football.

Mack Chapman returns to the Lions in 2021 to join the team’s coaching staff after the former Lion enjoyed a five-year career in various on-field positions for the squad. Chapman first joined the Lions in 2013 and played for two years before returning in 2017. He has previously played on the defensive line and then transitioned to become the team’s starting long snapper. In his graduating year, Chapman took home the 2019 Nobby Wirkowski Football Award.

KENDRICK RITCHIE

BARRY KLIMAS

Kenrick Ritchie returned to the Lions in 2019 to lead the defensive line, resuming a role he previously held in 2014. A former U SPORTS studentathlete, he played defensive tackle for the Bishop’s Gaiters, earning a starting spot in his third season in 2010, and participated in the Canadian Football League (CFL)’s E-camp in 2012. Ritchie, who grew up in Toronto, has been involved with a number of different minor football programs throughout the GTA since his playing career ended.

Barry Klimas joined the Lions coaching staff in 2010 and has worked with student-athletes on both offence and defence. Prior to joining the Lions he was the receivers and place kickers coach at the High School of Montreal. As a player, he was a receiver and place kicker for the University of Manitoba and Champlain College. He won the Bol D’or in 1987 with Champlain and went to the Canada West final with the Bisons in 1991.

Matt Deans returned to the York campus in 2017 as the recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach for the Lions football team. Deans was named the head coach of the York Region Lions in the OPFL in 2019 and won the regional championship in his first year. He was also an offensive assistant for the U16 Ontario team that same year. His previous coaching experience includes stints as offensive coordinator with the OVFL’s Etobicoke Eagles from 2011-14 and Newmarket Bucs in 2015. He has also been a longtime coach at Lorne Park Secondary School in Mississauga, being part of provincial bowl champions in 2000, 2017 and 2018. Assistant coaches AARON WOLSKI

MIKE MILLER

Aaron Wolski joined the York coaching staff in 2016. He is a former varsity athlete himself, playing one season at linebacker for the Western Mustangs before an accident ended his playing career. He began coaching with the Ottawa East Generals in 2009 as their linebackers coach, and since then has served as the defensive line coach for the St. Maximillian Kolbe Mustangs varsity team and in a variety of roles with the OVFL’s York Region Lions. He was also the defensive line coach for the ACG all-star game showcase in 2014.

Mike Miller joins Warren Craney’s staff ahead of the 2021 season staff with a focus on halfbacks and tight ends. His last U SPORTS coaching stop was at Saint Mary’s in 2017 as their offensive line and run game coordinator. Miller has recently been offensive coordinator with the Burlington Braves of the CJFL. Miller’s career has brought him close to Tommy Denison, the Lions’ offensive coordinator. They have collaborated in consulting and coaching roles for the last seven seasons.

the daley brothers “I never thought this would actually happen.”

ON THE HOT SEAT Favourite football player?

Alex Daley laughs and shakes his head when asked about the thought of playing in games with his brother. It may have been delayed by over two years, but now it’s happening. After Retsen Daley committed to play for York in early 2019, his season was railroaded with an injury, forcing him to redshirt. In 2020… well, you know. But now, the moment is finally here. Retsen, 21, suits up at York as a first-year, and Alex, 25, will play out his final season of U SPORTS eligibility. It’s the first time the brothers will actually get the opportunity to call themselves teammates.

ALEX: Russell Wilson is my favourite football player. You can never count him out. He’s calm, cool and collected in the clutch in the fourth quarter. RETSEN: I’ve been a Packers fan since I was very young. The classic Packers fan in me wants to go with Aaron Rodgers, but the receiver in me has to say Davante Adams. Studying what he does is going to help me in terms of my game. Favorite food? ALEX: I like chicken bowls from Z-Teca. It’s the healthiest thing I can get! RETSEN: Anyone who knows me is going to say chicken parmesan. I just love pasta. What’s on your bucket list?

Retsen likely wouldn’t be playing football without Alex’s leadership. He and his younger brother, Antwone, saw Alex beginning to play in the ninth grade when Retsen was about 10 years old. He knew he would likely head down the same path. His brother seemed like a rock star. “Everything was so new,” Retsen explains. “Seeing him on the internet, seeing him doing something I’ve never seen him do before, it was all a new feeling and was attractive to me. Especially given that I was already athletically inclined.” He continued to see the highlight reels featuring his older brother while he was playing high school football in Athol Springs, N.Y., but now Alex was in a York uniform. While it wasn’t the only factor in his decision, it made the decision to commit to York much easier. “I had a few looks from American schools, but coming back to Canada, definitely having my brother here was a huge deciding factor in coming here. It’s also an underdog look and that was an attraction for me, I love being the underdog.” Having an older brother around Lions training camp has been a boon for both the Daleys. Alex likes providing brotherly advice and Retsen gets to be the beneficiary. It’s a position the older Daley relishes as the first member of his siblings to attend a university.

ALEX: Travelling. I’d like to go to Thailand. I’ve never been outside of North America, I want to travel, see different cultures and how the world works. RETSEN: Given my focuses have been school and football to this point, I haven’t thought about a bucket list. But I know I want to go somewhere where I can step in the water and see my toes. Who is your role model? ALEX: My uncle Jermaine. He passed away a long time ago, in 2011, but he took sports very seriously and was actually a track & field coach down here at the Toronto Track & Field Centre. He got me into track, which was the first sport I competitively trained for. He was the first adult figure who also talked to me about my own personal situations and not just sports. RETSEN: It’s hard to pinpoint one individual. I obviously look up to my brother. And there are a ton of other people who I look up to. I take little bits and pieces of things I learn from them and try to integrate them into my life.

“I help him not make the same mistakes that I made,” Alex said of the advice he provides. “I try to be an example to show both Retsen and Antwone what to do so they have a chance to be better.” As for this season’s expectations, Alex and Retsen both think this season is a wide-open field with tons of surprises in store. They are preparing for the season with that in mind.

Jamal Campbell is in his fifth season with his hometown Argos and has appeared in more than 40 games. He made his first career start in 2019 and scored his first career touchdown that same year in Week 8 against Winnipeg. A five-year member of the Lions (2011-15), he spent time on both the offensive and defensive lines and was selected by the Argos in the third round (22nd overall) in the 2016 CFL Draft. He won a Toronto Urban Hero award in the People’s Choice Sport category in 2017 for his tremendous work in his own community as a mentor and public speaker. While with the Argos he completed his university degree and graduated from York in 2018.

LUTHER HAKUNAVANU CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Luther Hakunavanahu grew into a crucial offensive player for the Lions over his three seasons with the team from 2017 to 2019. His most recent one was his first starting all games at receiver, and that playing time led him to team highs in receiving yards (470) and touchdowns (3). Hakunavanahu, a resident of Edmonton, was selected by the Stampeders in the fifth round (44th overall) of the 2021 CFL Draft, and has joined the team’s receiving corps for his rookie season in 2021.

COLTON HUNCHAK CALGARY STAMPEDERS

In four seasons with the Lions (2015-19), Colton Hunchak was a two-time OUA all-star, the team’s MVP in 2016 and finished his career ranked second all-time in career receiving yards and touchdowns and first in total receptions. Hunchak was selected by his hometown team, the Calgary Stampeders, with the final pick in the 2019 CFL Draft (8th round, 73rd overall), got called back up after Week 3 of the season and made his first career reception, a 57-yard catch, in his second game. He joins the team for his second season in 2021.

NIKOLA KALINIC HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Nikola Kalinic returns to the Tiger-Cats for his second professional season. The native of Toronto was a special teams leader in his four seasons with the Lions (2014-18) while also playing at receiver and tight end. He was a three-time OUA all-star, including being recognized twice in his final season for both special teams and at fullback, and earned the team’s MVP trophy in his last year. His size (6-foot-2, 245 pounds) and fierceness on the field made him a top pro prospect and he was selected in the second round (10th overall) by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 2019 CFL Draft. Kalinic has made an immediate impact for his new team and scored the first touchdown of his career in his second game, and accumulated 109 receiving yards in his first season.
