YORK LIONS
SEASON OUTLOOK For many teams, an OUA silver medal and a sixth-place result at the national championships would represent a successful season, but for the York University Lions men’s soccer team, 2016 did not end the way the squad had hoped. Expectations are perennially lofty for one of the most dominant programs in U SPORTS over the last decade, and after back-to-back national titles in 2014 and 2015 the Lions were gunning for a three-peat. It didn’t happen, but the squad had a big off-season and the roster for 2017 is impressive. With a core group of returning players that know how to win and the addition of some tremendously talented pieces, the Lions are poised to once again challenge for the national championship. Despite the high potential of this team, head coach Carmine Isacco is more focused on looking ahead and the process than the past successes.
Carreiro will be counted on for his ability to score, but the Lions have a number of offensive weapons they can turn to for goals. Cristian Cavallini, who ranked third in conference scoring last year and was the OUA West rookie of the year, returns, as does the team’s playoff scoring leader in Milan Beader. Fellow second-year Steve Kloutsouniotis and thirdyear Eddie Lay have also proven they can find the back of the net and they will get their opportunities to do so.
“We don’t talk about continuing to win, we just talk about getting better,” he said when asked about carrying on the winning tradition he has established here. “It’s important for the players that have set a standard already to set a higher one for themselves and the group. As a coaching The team’s high-octane offence is matched on the other staff we are going to concentrate on making everyone bet- side of the ball by a stellar defence that has allowed the fewest goals in the OUA West for three straight years. ter because there’s always room for improvement.” This year projects to be no different with the return of U The Lions are loaded with talent across all positions on the SPORTS all-Canadian Daniel Gogarty, a tall, extremely talfield. Reigning national player of the year Jonathan Lao re- ented centre back who is described by Isacco as the unsung turns for his fifth and final season with the Lions and will hero of the team. They will be backed up by a goalkeeping group that is led by newcomer Quillan Roberts, a former Toronto FC netminder who recently joined the Lions. He and Andrew D’Souza, in his fourth year with the program and the starter for most of last season, including the OUA playoffs, will be challenged by a pair of rookies in Michael Argyrides and Michael Costanzo for playing time between the posts. Perhaps the biggest addition to the roster comes in the midfield in Dylan Carreiro, a former U20 national team captain who has spent the last few years playing professionally The Lions’ record over the last 10 years speaks for itself: 10 OUA West Division titles, nine trips to the OUA Final Four, in Europe. seven appearances at the national championships and a “There’s not much I can’t say about him,” says Isacco of his total of eight banners. On paper, the 2017 outfit is just as newest midfielder. “He is fantastic in the attack, responsi- talented as those past teams and the current squad has its ble defensively and dynamic on restarts. He’s the complete sights set on adding to the list of accomplishments this season. package.” The squad will also benefit from the return of three-time OUA West first-team all-star Joey Cicchillo. The fifth-year forward missed all of last season with an injury but is fully healthy again and has returned to the peak form he has shown in past years.

ASSISTANT COACHES HIEU QUACH
ANDREA LOMBARDO
ASSISTANT COACH
ASSISTANT COACH Hieu Quach has been with the Lions men’s soccer program since 2007. He came to York along with head coach Carmine Isacco and previously worked as an assistant under Isacco for two years at the University of Toronto. He has played a big role in the success experienced by the Lions, including the team’s three OUA banners (2007, 2013-14) and CIS titles (2008, 2010, 2014).
Quach was a three-year starter at central midfield for the Varsity Blues, earning a conference all-star selection in 1996 and academic all-Canadian honours in 1998. He graduated from the University of Toronto with an education degree after earning a bachelor of science from Dalhousie University.
Andrea Lombardo joined the Lions coaching staff in 2017, returning to a program where he spent parts of two seasons as a player. PLAYER PROFILE JOEY CICCHILLO The 2017 campaign is an extra special one for fifth-year forward Joey Cicchillo as he finally gets to play out his last year of eligibility after an injury prevented him from doing so one year ago. In the spring of 2016, as he was preparing for his final season with the Lions, he suffered his second ACL tear in four years and was forced to sit out. Cicchillo has worked very hard to get back to peak form and will finally get to take the field as a fifth-year captain this fall. His motivation is a simple one and remains the same as the day he chose to come to York. “I came back to win,” he says when asked why he stayed in school an extra year to have one more chance to play. “York is the place you want to be to do that. It’s infectious to be around the guys and play for [head coach] Carm[ine Isacco]. Winning is what brought me here and what’s keeping me here, that’s all that’s on our mind this season.”
Calling it a “no brainer” thanks to his Italian background, Cicchillo has been a regular on the soccer pitch since the age of four, when his parents first enrolled him. He played both soccer and hockey until the age of 11, when he realized he was starting to excel in soccer and wanted to focus his efforts there. He first met Isacco at a high school tournament when he was in grade 11 and, soon after, made the decision to join him with the Lions. The rest, as they say, is history. “My rookie year was an adjustment, I didn’t know what the level was like when I first came to York. I quickly realized through the leaders on the team at the time that it was an elite program and it was something I wanted to be part of. It’s a special group here, each year we have great players and this year is no different. The last four years have been unbelievable and that’s why I’m back again. I wouldn’t want to miss this for the world.” Cicchillo will graduate with his degree in kinesiology and health science after this season and has plans to return to York one day to pursue a master’s degree in exercise science. Before that, however, he wants to pursue a professional soccer career for as long as he can and he will savour his final season with the Lions while looking ahead to his future.
His journey at York has been one of triumph and setback. He came here to play for Isacco and made an immediate impact, earning a starting job right away and scoring three goals in his first 10 games. But a torn ACL cut short his rookie campaign, and after a lengthy recovery he returned to the line-up for the third game of his sophomore season. In the three years that followed, Cicchillo was one of the best in the conference. He earned OUA West first-team all-star honours in each season and helped the Lions with three straight OUA championships and back-to-back national titles. In 2014, he scored the U SPORTS gold medal-winning goal in the final to be named the player of the game and earned a spot on the championship tournament all-star team. His opportunity to help the Lions defend those titles in 2016 came to an abrupt end 16 months ago when his ACL gave out a second time. Understanding the work that would go into his rehab, he was disappointed but motivated to make another successful return as he had three years earlier. “My first one was my first major injury ever and I didn’t know what to expect, I was a bit scared because it was the first time I was sidelined and not playing soccer,” Cicchillo said about his recoveries. “I had an amazing team around me that helped me through the process. Without them I don’t know where I’d be right now. This time, I had the confidence that I would get back to a high level and it was more mental for me. This is the longest I’ve been away from the field and I can’t wait to get back.”
2017 SOCCER
GETTING TO KNOW ANY SIGNIFICANCE TO THE NUMBER 11? I didn’t wear it until I got here. Luca [Forno] was a captain and it was his number, and then Branko [Majstorovic] was a captain and he wore it. They welcomed me into the 11 club and wanted me to wear it, so it’s special to me. ANY SUPERSTITIONS? I tape my left wrist before every game. BIGGEST SUPPORTER? My mom and dad. They come to every game and are excited to see me back on the field. FAVOURITE SOCCER PLAYER? Andriy Shevchenko, it’s a bit different but Milan is my team.

YORK LIONS
JOIN THE PRIDE York University’s student-athletes have been competing against rival institutions on the Canadian sport scene for over 40 years. Provincial and national team titles, combined with numerous athletes and coaches who have participated on many of Canada’s national teams, attest to the success of York’s varsity program. Since the inception of organized sport competition in 1965, York has won 173 provincial banners and 36 national titles. Athletics & Recreation offers 19 varsity sport teams that compete in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). The varsity sport teams are guided by a tremendous coaching staff that is composed of NCCP certified professionals, many of whom also hold leadership positions in provincial and national sport organizations and are experts in their field of coaching. The staff includes more than 100 dedicated full-time and part-time coaches.
ACADEMIC AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT At York we understand that academic and financial support are significant keys to success at the university level and we have a number of programs in place to provide all the support necessary for student-athletes to thrive.
PROVIDING ATHLETES WITH WINNING STRATEGIES (PAWS) Athletics & Recreation has placed the highest priority on supporting its student-athletes in all facets of university life, focusing specifically on helping foster success in the classroom. The PAWS Program provides tutoring across multiple subjects for all students, mentoring from senior student-athletes, academic advising through our academic services coordinator and many of our faculty, and access to our vast network of alumni.
ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS York University is committed to helping students with demonstrated financial need meet the direct education costs associated with university studies (tuition, books and mandatory course fees). Financial assistance can be provided from a variety of sources including OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, private awards and employment. Athletics & Recreation understands the importance of providing Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) to entering student-athletes and has developed a number of awards, valued at $22,500 each ($4,500 per year up to five years). These awards are given annually to elite student-athletes that have achieved an 80% entering average and maintain a 6.0 grade point average.
development, strength and flexibility. Programs are created for both in-season and off-season workouts. Every training session is designed for the needs of the athlete and individual sport. The training phase and focus changes throughout the year and are based on the competition schedule and off-season periodization program. The strength and conditioning coaches also work closely with the athletic therapy group on rehabilitating injured players. All Lions have access to the varsity strength and conditioning centre, which is for the exclusive use of our student-athletes. Training here allows you to work in a high-performance environment where all equipment and programming is selected with the needs of the high-performance athlete in mind.
SPORT INJURY CLINIC The Gorman/Shore Sport Injury Clinic features a full staff of athletic therapists and team doctors with significant experience in the medical field, and many of the doctors are recognized as some of the top experts in the country in their specific fields. In addition to sport medicine physicians, York employs a large variety of specialists including an orthopedic surgeon, dentist, neurosurgeon, radiologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, osteopath, pedorthist and a mental health specialist. The team brings to York experience at multiple Olympic Games and world championships, as well as with professional and amateur athletes in a variety of sports. The sport injury clinic is a teaching clinic, with students from the Athletic Therapy Certificate Program doing their clinical placements under the direct supervision of the clinic manager and supervisor. Because of this, most medical care for student-athletes is free of charge. Each Lions varsity team is assigned at least one student athletic therapist who spends the entire season with the team and attends all practices and games. Lions student-athletes also have access to a fully-equipped clinic for all of their treatment needs.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING York University is one of only a handful of institutions in Canada that has two dedicated strength and conditioning coaches for its student-athletes. The Lions work closely with strength and conditioning staff, who create programs based on the needs of the athlete and coaches on high-performance lifts and movements. Team and individual workouts are available and education on all aspects of strength and conditioning is provided, including proper warm-ups and cool-downs, plyometrics, power, energy systems
