SEASON
OUTLOOK
The York Lions men’s volleyball team has a new coach at the head of the program and are armed with a roster packed with skill and raw athleticism that has the team hoping for a deep playoff run this season. Former national team member and OUA player of the year Nathan Groenveld was chosen as head coach of the program over the offseason after a nationwide search. Groenveld, who was the head coach at Niagara College for eight years before coming to York, has been impressed throughout the pre-season with the roster he’s inherited in his first year at York and sees the returning players depth, continuity and athleticism as key factors to the team’s success this year. “We returned 15 players from last year’s so that’s been great in terms of synergy and continuity within the group,” says Groenveld. “From an individual standpoint I think Logan Mend is going to be huge for
game should only improve with his freshman year under his belt. The 15 returning players will be joined by two new recruits this season as setter Dan Everton and outside hitter Nathan Lake will play their first seasons in the York red and white. From opposite sides of the country, Everton, from Penticton, B.C. and Lake, from Conception Bay South, Nfld., are both talented prospects that Groenveld sees as a big part of the Lions future. “Being new I was pretty fortunate that two young men committed to the program and chose to stay on after I was hired,” says Groenveld on his two rookies. “Nathan has come in and put his head down and worked very hard and his development so far has been awesome. Dan Everton is someone we think going to be a franchise setter. He’s from the same town as Logan (Mend) so there’s a cool mentorship there. He’ll see some court time this year and we think he has a really bright future at York.”
Our main goal is just to continue to get better every day. We hope to get a little more skilled and be a little more systematic.

us from the setting position. When you have a game-changing setter that really puts you in an advantageous position and we have that kind of player in Logan. We also have a core group of outside hitters that include Aleksander Grzegorczyk, Tyler Covach, Andrew Shotbolt and Andrew Tauhid. They’ll all find themselves on the court this year in key spots for us and all of them will provide some fantastic offensive punch. And in the middle of the court we have Andriy Sozanskyy and Toure Nwakwesi, who have made some pretty drastic changes to their games that fit in with our team and I think they’re going to have a really big impact in the league this year.” Of the returning players, three of them in Mend, Shotbolt and Tauhid, received recognition for their outstanding play last season as Mend and Shotbolt were named OUA first-team all-stars and Tauhid made the OUA all-rookie team. Mend led the OUA with 33 service aces and led all setters in the conference with 1.6 points per set while Shotbolt had a breakthrough year that saw him rank ninth in kills per set (3.24) and fifth in service aces (25). Tauhid began his OUA career with a bang, ranking third on the team with 2.7 points per set and his
Groenveld has spent the off-season getting to know his roster and implementing some systematic changes that he hopes will payoff for the athletic group come playoff time. The Lions have had tremendous regular seasons the last two years, going 15-3 in 201617 and 12-6 last year, but had short playoff runs getting eliminated in the OUA quarterfinals both seasons. The new coach sees the potential in this group and hopes for some post-season success in his first-year behind the bench. “Our main goal is just to continue to get better every day,” says Groenveld. “We hope to get a little more skilled and be a little more systematic. In terms of results, we want to be in every match. There could be an opportunity for us to host another quarterfinal, which would be another good step for us and we would love to be able to host a final four with the home crowd behind us. That would be a great event for the program. I think our league is a little bit more open than it has been historically and if we continue to do the right things I think we have a real chance at being there at the end of the season.”

NATHAN GROENVELD HEAD COACH
Nathan Groenveld will start his first season behind the Lions bench this season and becomes the fourth head coach in the history of the program. Groenveld, a former member of Canada’s senior national team, finished his playing career in 2010, and was named head coach of the men’s volleyball program at Niagara College prior to the 2010-11 season. In eight years with the Knights, he led the team to an overall record of 96-62, including 74-35 in his last six years with the program. His run as head coach was highlighted by an OCAA gold medal in 2014-15, followed by a bronze medal at the CCAA national championships the same year. The bronze medal at nationals was the first team medal at a national championship in school history. The Lions new coach has also remained active at the national and provincial level, serving in a number of roles since 2014, including lead coach of the youth national team east selection camp and assistant coach of the national B team. In addition to coaching roles, Groenveld’s volleyball resume includes stints as a member of Volleyball Canada’s national high performance selection committee and as Technical Director for the Niagara region Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence. As a player, Groenveld starred at McMaster University and led the Marauders to two OUA Championships during his five years with the team. The 6’7” middle picked up a number of awards during his university career, including a first team all-Canadian selection, OUA player of the year and two OUA first team all-star selections. Groenveld also played on the senior national team from 2007-2010 and represented Canada at the NORCECA Continental Championships in 2009. Following his stint on the national team he spent six months playing professionally in Qatar before returning home to begin his coaching career.

ANDREW SHOTBOLT By Stella Isaac
Andrew began playing volleyball when he was in the fifth grade. By the time he was in grade seven, he was asked to try out for the Markham Stingers, a volleyball club in Markham. Not only did he make the team, but he was placed in the age group above his own. When he hit the eighth grade, Shotbolt decided to continue with the players in his age category and played with more or less the same group until he completed high school. When Andrew, who was given the nickname “Shotty,” (a nickname that was also given to his sister Lindsay, who starred on the Lions basketball team last year) was in the 12th grade, nine players who were on the Markham Stingers were also on Shotty’s high school team at Bill Crothers Secondary School. The talented team went undefeated throughout the regular season and won OFSAA, after a close call in a close quarter final match. When Andrew was a senior in high school, he had received offers from both York University and the University of Western Ontario, his parents’ alma mater and where his father played varsity hockey and his mother was a cheerleader. However, after a visit with both universities, Shotty decided to enrol at York and major in Human Resources.
peared in nine matches and ten sets as a rookie outside hitter. In his second year, Andrew’s court time grew, and he appeared in 14 matches and had 37 sets as outside hitter. In his third season with the Lions, Andrew appeared in 16 matches, and the only games he missed were a result of him recovering from a concussion. He played in 63 sets as a starting outside hitter, was tied 10th in the OUA for the most points per set (3.8) and was named an OUA first-team all-star for the first time in his career. Last season the Lions were able to make it to the OUA quarterfinals, however, they were eliminated after losing to the Windsor Lancers 3-1. This year Andrew, who has achieved success in his athletic career by trusting the process of becoming an elite varsity athlete, is looking to surpass the first-round of the single-game elimination playoffs for the first time in his career. He’s also hoping to improve individually for the fourth consecutive year and have the best year yet in his already impressive Lions career. FUN QUESTIONS WITH ANDREW 1. Who is your favourite Athlete? Derrick Rose
“York had a family aspect that other schools lacked,” says Shotbolt on his decision to become a Lion. “I had a great visit here and I received a tour of the school and got to meet some of the players. Western didn’t have the same vibe, so I made the choice to come here.”
2. Who are your three favourite sports teams? Raptors, Leafs, Blue Jays
Throughout his varsity career, Andrew has had to learn to be patient and develop his skills on the court. In his first year, he ap
4. If any celebrity could play you in a movie, who would it be? Bradley Cooper

JOIN THE PRIDE York University’s student-athletes have been competing against rival institutions on the Canadian sport scene for over 40 years. Provincial and national team titles, combined with numerous athletes and coaches who have participated on many of Canada’s national teams, attest to the success of York’s varsity program. Since the inception of organized sport competition in 1965, York has won 173 provincial banners and 36 national titles. Athletics & Recreation offers 19 varsity sport teams that compete in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and U SPORTS. The varsity sport teams are guided by a tremendous coaching staff that is composed of NCCP certified professionals, many of whom also hold leadership positions in provincial and national sport organizations and are experts in their field of coaching. The staff includes more than 100 dedicated fulltime and part-time coaches.
ACADEMIC & FINANCIAL SUPPORT At York we understand that academic and financial support are significant keys to success at the university level and we have a number of programs in place to provide all the support necessary for student-athletes to thrive. Providing Athletes with Winning Strategies (PAWS)
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING York University is one of only a handful of institutions in Canada that has two dedicated strength and conditioning coaches for its studentathletes. The Lions work closely with strength and conditioning staff, who create programs based on the needs of the athlete and coaches on high-performance lifts and movements. Team and individual workouts are available and education on all aspects of strength and conditioning is provided, including proper warm-ups and cool-downs, plyometrics, power, energy systems development, strength and flexibility. Programs are created for both in-season and off-season workouts. Every training session is designed for the needs of the athlete and individual sport. The training phase and focus changes throughout the year and are based on the competition schedule and off-season periodization program. The strength and conditioning coaches also work closely with the athletic therapy group on rehabilitating injured players. All Lions have access to the varsity strength and conditioning centre, which is for the exclusive use of our student-athletes. Training here allows you to work in a high-performance environment where all equipment and programming is selected with the needs of the high-performance athlete in mind.
SPORT INJURY CLINIC
Athletics & Recreation has placed the highest priority on supporting its student-athletes in all facets of university life, focusing specifically on helping foster success in the classroom. The PAWS Program provides tutoring across multiple subjects for all students, mentoring from senior student-athletes, academic advising through our academic services coordinator and many of our faculty, and access to our vast network of alumni.
The Gorman/Shore Sport Injury Clinic features a full staff of athletic therapists and team doctors with significant experience in the medical field, and many of the doctors are recognized as some of the top experts in the country in their specific fields.
Athletic Scholarships York University is committed to helping students with demonstrated financial need meet the direct education costs associated with university studies (tuition, books and mandatory course fees). Financial assistance can be provided from a variety of sources including OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, private awards and employment. Athletics & Recreation understands the importance of providing Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) to entering student-athletes and has developed a number of awards, valued at $22,500 each ($4,500 per year up to five years). These awards are given annually to elite student-athletes that have achieved an 80% entering average and maintain a 6.0 grade point average.
In addition to sport medicine physicians, York employs a large variety of specialists including an orthopedic surgeon, dentist, neurosurgeon, radiologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, osteopath, pedorthist and a mental health specialist. The team brings to York experience at multiple Olympic Games and world championships, as well as with professional and amateur athletes in a variety of sports. The sport injury clinic is a teaching clinic, with students from the Athletic Therapy Certificate Program doing their clinical placements under the direct supervision of the clinic manager and supervisor. Because of this, most medical care for student-athletes is free of charge. Each Lions varsity team is assigned at least one student athletic therapist who spends the entire season with the team and attends all practices and games. Lions student-athletes also have access to a fully-equipped clinic for all of their treatment needs.
