The team’s backcourt duo of Katrina Collins-Samuels and Sandra Nagowska were both on the OUA all-rookie team last season after tremendous first years. Collins-Samuels was second in team scoring while Nagowska led the Lions in assists, and both are poised to take another step in their development this year.

The depth is a lot better than last year, and the strength of the team will definitely be in the backcourt with its guards. “We’ve talked a lot about playing fast, hard and together. We want to increase the tempo and get out and run. We definitely want to create opportunities for our guards and we have a lot of them who can get past defenders and get to the rim.” Fifth-year guard Ishanaa Seupersadsingh is coming off a career year in which she led the Lions in scoring with 10.9 points

LEXIE SANANES

HEAD COACH

ASSISTANT COACH

Erin McAleenan became the head coach of the Lions women’s basketball team ahead of the 2015-16 season, taking over the reigns of the program after 29 years with Bill Pangos at the helm. McAleenan came to York from the University of Lethbridge, where she was the head coach of the Pronghorns for three seasons. In her time in Lethbridge, she guided the program to its best record in 18 years in 2012-13 while also creating an alumni association and developing the local Jr. Horns Basketball Club. She has plenty of national and international coaching experience, most recently as an assistant coach with the Canadian cadette women’s team in 2015. She was also the head coach of Alberta’s U17 Canada Summer Games team in 2013 and an assistant coach for Canada’s Pan Am Games team in 2011. Prior to entering the coaching ranks, McAleenan had a four-year playing career at Acadia University, where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree. She went on to receive her education degree from Trent University and then her master’s in coaching from the University of Alberta. She spent six years as a high school teacher in Port Hope, Ont., before beginning her post-graduate degree.

ELSPETH CHENG ASSISTANT COACH

Elspeth Cheng joined the Lions coaching staff in 2016, returning to the team where she previously experienced a tremendous playing career. After three years with the Dalhousie Tigers, Cheng came to York and was a member of the team for two seasons during one of the program’s most successful runs. She helped the squad win the OUA championship in 2007 and represent the conference at the national tournament, and the following year reached the OUA final again en route to a silver medal. She spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach with separate local club programs, first the North Toronto Basketball Association and then the Scarborough Basketball Association, and won medals in four of those years, including gold with North Toronto in 2011-12 and then again with Scarborough in 2015. While at York, Cheng will also be completing her master’s degree in education.

THE COACHES Lexie Sananes joined the Lions coaching staff in 2012 after retiring from playing following two injuryplagued seasons with the Lions.

Before coming to York, Sananes played for the Advantage Titans club program and she coached with the club for seven years. She is an assistant coach at Bill Crothers Secondary School and is entering her fourth summer as an assistant coach with the U15/U17 Ontario team. She was part of the squad that won the U17 national championship in 2015.

SHELDON WHITE ASSISTANT COACH

Sheldon White joined the Lions coaching staff in 2015 after six seasons as an assistant coach with the junior and senior boys basketball teams at Port Credit Secondary School. Currently, he convenes the adult basketball league for the City of Mississauga. He has been a certified basketball official with the Peel Regional Board of Approved Basketball Officials for eight years, and received the Dale Carnegie Highest Achievement Award, voted on by his peers.

MERV MAXWELL ASSISTANT COACH

Merv Maxwell joined the Lions coaching staff in 2016 and brings to York several years of experience as a player, coach and administrator at a number of different levels in New Brunswick. He coached for five years at George Street Middle School and was the youth development director at the YMCA in Fredericton, where he coached various recreational and competitive programs for all ages. His own playing career included three years on the New Brunswick provincial team and five years representing the Varsity Reds at the University of New Brunswick.

SHAUNEY FISCHER

FIFTH-YEAR FORWARD LEAVING HER MARK AT YORK Growing up, Shauney Fischer was a natural athlete who played many different sports, but it was basketball that really captivated her and ultimately led her to York University. She picked up the sport in grade four after a cousin asked her to join a team that was lacking girls and she took to it right away. As a woman who grew to be 6-foot-1, Fischer continued to excel in many different sports but realized in grade 9 that her passion was to be on a court, and in grade 12 she played basketball exclusively with the goal of continuing to play at the next level. A visit to York during the recruiting process sealed the deal. “I love the community feel here. I visited a few other schools but the second I stepped on campus here it felt like a second home for me. I loved the feel of the campus and the people that are here and I knew I had to be at York.” Four years later, York has become even more of a second home for her and she has loved being part of the Lions community.

year with the goal of helping the Lions earn one of the 12 playoff spots in the OUA.

“It’s been an amazing experience. I’ve enjoyed everything York has to offer, especially the family feel. That is huge for me.”

Now in her second year under head coach Erin McAleenan, Fischer feels that she has seen a lot of personal growth in herself and the same in her teammates, and she believes that will carry them into an improved performance on the basketball court.

Fischer has embraced many different aspects of campus life even outside the varsity community, most notably working for the recruitment office hosting campus tours for prospective students. She got into the work thanks to a recommendation from former teammate Courtney Osborne, who thought Fischer’s bubbly personality would serve her well in the position. “I love being able to influence their choices,” Fischer says about the high school students and their parents she now meets. “I like being able to talk to them about being at York and help them get a feel for the campus. The people I met when I came to visit are what influenced me the most and I hope to be that person for the students who come visit.” Fischer’s leadership skills have also been apparent on the court, where she is a team captain and is coming off a career year in which she ranked third in team scoring. She has played in 68 games over her first four seasons and enters her fifth and final

When the season ends and her playing career comes to a close, Fischer wants to remain in the sport as a coach. The kinesiology and health science student is also applying to graduate school and has dreams of becoming a chiropractor. “I’ve always wanted to do something related to working with athletes and helping them through the healing process. I’ve been going to a chiropractor my whole life and it has really helped me and I want to be able to do that for other athletes.” Before that happens, she has one more year to leave her mark on both the Lions women’s basketball team and the broader York community.

KHARA KEANE

SECOND-YEAR GUARD MAKES HER U SPORTS DEBUT AFTER ONE SEASON IN NCAA “When I finally switched to a girls’ team it was really different. It was nice being able to stay with the team and use the same changeroom, and I got the ball more because they weren’t scared to pass me the ball!” Keane blossomed on the basketball court and put together a tremendous high school career at St. Joseph’s College in Toronto, earning team MVP honours in four consecutive seasons and leading the squad to a city championship in 2014. She also played her club basketball with the Advantage Titans, where she was coached by a familiar face in Lexie Sananes, who is an assistant with the Lions. Sananes heard Keane was planning on coming back home and reached out, and Keane decided to commit to the Lions after getting to know McAleenan and visiting the campus. She has only been here for a short time but is already enjoying all the university has to offer. “It’s been amazing, I love it! I got that opportunity at Albany so I went there, but it wasn’t all I thought it would be. I decided to come home and I still wanted to play. I was originally going to go to Cape Breton to play with my older sister [Colleen is a fifth-year guard with the Capers] but it was really far and when I weighed all my options, I realized I wanted to be here at York.”

GETTING TO KNOW KHARA Is there any significance to wearing the #7? Yes, it represents my dad’s birthday, which was March 7. He passed away when I was 9. My sister wears the same number.

Keane first stepped on a basketball court at the age of eight to join all of her cousins, who had gotten into the sport through a program started by her uncle. There were no girls’ leagues at that age, and so she cut her teeth in basketball playing on a boys’ team for the first few years.

If you weren’t playing basketball, what sport would you play? Soccer

Growing up playing only with boys was tough at first but it provided her with a unique experience that helped her grow her skill set in the game.

What is your favourite food? Pizza

“I was the only girl on the boys’ team. Until I proved myself in practice they wouldn’t pass me the ball, but then when I did something good they really hyped it up!

Since the inception of organized sports competition in 1965, York has won 173 provincial banners and 36 national titles. Athletics & Recreation offers 19 varsity sport teams that compete in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). The varsity sport teams are guided by a tremendous coaching staff that is composed of NCCP certified professionals, many of whom also hold leadership positions in provincial and national sport organizations. The staff includes more than 100 dedicated full-time and part-time coaches.

ACADEMIC AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT At York, we understand that academic and financial support are significant keys to success at the university level and we have a number of programs in place to provide all the support necessary for student-athletes to thrive.

PROVIDING ATHLETES WITH WINNING STRATEGIES (PAWS) Athletics & Recreation has placed the highest priority on supporting its student-athletes in all facets of university life, focusing specifically on helping foster success in the classroom. The PAWS Program provides tutoring across multiple subjects for all students, mentoring from senior student-athletes, academic advising through our academic services coordinator and many of our faculty, and access to our vast network of alumni.

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS York University is committed to helping students with demonstrated financial need meet the direct education costs associated with university studies (tuition, books and mandatory course fees). Financial assistance can be provided from a variety of sources including OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, private awards and employment. Athletics & Recreation understands the importance of providing Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) to entering student-athletes and has developed a number of awards, valued at $22,500 each ($4,500 per year up to five years). These awards are given annually to elite student-athletes that have achieved an 80% entering average and maintain a 6.0 grade point average.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING York University is one of only a handful of institutions in Canada that has two dedicated strength and conditioning coaches for its student-athletes. The Lions work closely with strength and conditioning staff, who create programs based on the needs of the athlete and coaches on high-performance lifts and movements. Team and individual workouts are available and education on all aspects of strength and conditioning is provided, including proper warm-ups and cool-downs, plyometrics, power, energy systems development, strength and flexibility.

Programs are created for both in-season and off-season workouts. Every training session is designed for the needs of the athlete and individual sport. The training phase and focus changes throughout the year and are based on the competition schedule and off-season periodization program. The strength and conditioning coaches also work closely with the athletic therapy group on rehabilitating injured players. All Lions have access to the varsity strength and conditioning centre, which is for the exclusive use of our student-athletes. Training here allows you to work in a high-performance environment where all equipment and programming is selected with the needs of the high-performance athlete in mind.

SPORT INJURY CLINIC The Gorman/Shore Sport Injury Clinic features a full staff of athletic therapists and team doctors with significant experience in the medical field, and many of the doctors are recognized as some of the top experts in the country in their specific fields. In addition to sport medicine physicians, York employs a large variety of specialists including an orthopedic surgeon, dentist, neurosurgeon, radiologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, osteopath, pedorthist and a mental health specialist. The team brings to York experience at multiple Olympic Games and world championships, as well as with professional and amateur athletes in a variety of sports. The sport injury clinic is a teaching clinic, with students from York University’s Athletic Therapy Certificate Program completing their clinical placements under the direct supervision of the clinic manager and supervisor. Because of this, most medical care for student-athletes is free of charge. Each varsity team is assigned at least one student athletic therapist who spends the entire season with the team and attends all practices and games. Lions student-athletes also have access to a fully-equipped clinic for all of their treatment needs.
