SEASON

OUTLOOK

2018 is a big year for the York Lions women’s soccer team as the squad looks to prove itself in the OUA standings. The Lions had an up and down 2017 season, where they went winless in the first six games of the year before rallying to go unbeaten in the last five games of the year and qualify for a spot in the OUA playoffs. Lions head coach Carmine Isacco hopes his team will avoid a slow start this season and has focused his message on being mentally prepared to start the year. “We’ve been trying to emphasize that our mentality and character has to stay strong no matter what the situation is during the game,” said Isacco. “Our will to win and compete has to be consistent and we can’t settle for mediocrity. Success is something we build towards every day and it starts with our preparations in the off-season and in training camp.” Isacco believes this message is well-received by a team that fought hard last season despite long odds to make the playoffs and thinks the group’s character and resiliency will be one of their strengths again this year.

will count on to provide offense this year. Muhtaj and Papadopoulous are both coming off injury-plagued 2017 seasons but impressed in limited action. Saxton, who Isacco says is ‘technically fantastic with great feet and vision’ will play a larger role in the team’s offense after spending her first two seasons as primarily a reserve player. Sophomore defenders Teni Odetoyinbo and Jessica Lush both played heavy minutes for the Lions in their rookie seasons, as did midfielder Ola Olatoye. Isacco points to all three as key contributors for the Lions this season and young leaders in the locker room who have made a seamless transition to the university ranks. In goal, fifth-year keepers Courtney Davis and Tamara Orlando will be in line to replace incumbent netminder Taylor Grant who graduated last year. Davis has played a backup role the last three seasons after starting 15 games in her rookie year, while Orlando has played nine games in her four years with the team including six starts last year. Among the new additions to the Lions team this season is assistant coach Tina Cook. A former star player at Graceland University who also played two years of professional soccer in Greece, Cook joins the

“The strength of the team is going to be our character and our resilience, that’s going to be very important for us,” said the master coach. “As usual we’re hoping to be a team that possesses the ball a lot. We want to be a little bit better this year in the final third of the field, and I think we have the personnel where we can do that. That’s the type of team we want to be, dominate the ball and create chances off good defending. We’re going to work hard and see where the game takes us.” The Lions lineup features a mix of talented upper-year players and a stellar group of sophomores who acquitted themselves well in their rookie seasons. Fifth-year veteran Christina Morelli will lead the way for the Lions after earning her first OUA all-star selection last season. The versatile Morelli, who has patrolled both the striker and mid-field positions in her four years with the Lions will be joined by midfielder Farkhunda Muhtaj and forwards Sia Papadopoulos and Kendra Saxton as players who Isacco

Lions coaching staff after four years as an assistant coach with Ryerson University. “Tina is very familiar with the OUA and brings an incredible amount of technical and tactical knowledge to our program,” says Isacco on his new assistant coach. “She also has great familiarity with the female soccer community and I have no doubt Tina will be a great role model and mentor for the young athletes in our program.” Armed with a solid mental game and an improving roster, the Lions have all the tools necessary to make some noise in the OUA this season and earn a return trip to the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.

The Lions men’s team has made eight appearances at the national championships with him at the helm and has won four national banners (2008, 2010, 201415). They are also five-time OUA champions under his guidance (2007, 2013-15, 2017) and have won provincial medals in 10 of the 11 years he has led the program. The Lions have finished first in the OUA West Division in each of his 11 seasons and have earned a No. 1 spot in the weekly U SPORTS rankings in 10 of the 11 years since he took over. In 2015, he guided the women’s soccer team to an undefeated regular season (15-0-1) and the team was ranked as high as No. 2 in the U SPORTS rankings. Isacco is a six-time recipient of the OUA men’s coach of the year award, (2007, 2010, 2012-14, 2016) and won his first OUA women’s coach of the year award in 2015. He is also a two-time U SPORTS coach of the year (2007, 2014) and a four-time York coach of the year (2010, 2014-16). In 2015 he served as a guest coach with the Canadian senior men’s team for a pair of friendlies in advance of World Cup qualifying, and he was also an assistant coach with the U22 team at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

He joined the Lions after spending two seasons as the head coach of the men’s team at the University of Toronto, where he led the Varsity Blues to a pair of OUA silver medals and a CIS silver medal in 2005. His coaching career has also seen him claim a national championship with the Hearts-Azzurri S.C. in the U18 division. In addition to his role as club head coach for HeartsAzzurri, he also served as the club’s general manager, responsible for the administration of over 2000 young soccer players. As head coach of Toronto Supra in the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL), Isacco was named coach of the year in 2002 in the Ontario Youth Soccer League. Following his stint in the NSL, Isacco was a player and assistant coach for the Milwaukee Rampage in the A-League. While with Milwaukee, he was named an all-league first-team all-star, playoff MVP and he captured a league title in 1997. He has also spent time with the Rochester Rhinos and Toronto Lynx as a player/assistant coach in the A-League. His indoor playing career in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) saw him claim a league title in 1998 with the Milwaukee Wave and he was named a league all-star while playing for the Edmonton Drillers. PROFILE Passion for the sport of soccer runs deep for Lions fifth-year veteran Christina Morelli. She’s seen the women’s soccer program go through a number of high’s and low’s in her four years with the squad, and through it all her passion for the sport and her pride for being a York Lion has never wavered.

“I love that soccer is an outlet that allows me to be energetic and intense,” says Morelli. “It gives me a sense of feeling and belonging, especially when I’m with my teammates. I love being a York Lion and I feel like I’m part of a tight knit community here at York. It is my family away from home, that accepts and supports me no matter what.” Soccer has been a part of Morelli’s life as long as she can remember. Even though she played other sports throughout her childhood and teen years she always felt a pull back to soccer, especially when she started to advance up the levels of the sport during her high school years. “I first became involved in soccer when I was four years old,” said the kinesiology and health science major. “My parents put me in a lot of different sports growing up, but I always went back to soccer. I realized I might have a future in the sport while playing club soccer during early high school. For a sport I love so much, I knew I had to invest a lot of time and effort to excel at the varsity level.” And excel she has. Morelli has appeared in 63 of 64 regular season games in her York career, tallying 14 goals and eight assists over that time. After spending the first two seasons at striker, she transitioned to midfield in advance of her third season where she’s blossomed

into one of the top players in the OUA West division. She was named an OUA West all-star for the first time last season and finished second on the team in goals, points, shots and shots on goal. She also helped lead the Lions to two first place finishes in the OUA West in 2015 and 2016, which included an undefeated 15-0-1 record in the 2015 regular season. A young York Lions women’s soccer team will be looking for leadership this season and Morelli will be counted on again to be a strong voice inside the dressing room and on the pitch. Up to this point in her Lions career she’s played with some of the top players the women’s program has ever seen and has learned some valuable lessons along the way on what it takes to be a leader. “I have looked up to an outstanding group of players and leaders over the last four years who have set great examples on what it takes to be a leader and a competitor,” says Morelli, on who she’s learned from during her time with the team. “To name a few, Sarah Wong, Shannon Wood, Nour Ghoneim, Marilyn Grammenopoulos and Tomika McIntosh. They have all taught me that to be successful you need a passion and drive to win. When you share that passion and drive with the team, they feed off that intense energy and together everyone can raise their game as a result.” When asked about what advice she would offer to the freshman class of 2018, she points to herself and the veterans on the team as resources they can use to help them succeed in their university years. “The advice I would give first-year athletes coming to York is that there are so many resources on campus to help you be successful,” says Morelli, who’s set to graduate in 2019. “A huge resource is your very own upper year teammates. We can help you be successful on and off the field because we have experienced what it takes to thrive at this level.” Morelli and the rest of her Lions teammates hope to thrive on the pitch this season as they will look to climb the OUA standings. With four years in the rear-view mirror, Morelli has one last season to look forward to and she is focused on being a leader and bringing passion to the team. Just like she’s always done. Providing Athletes with Winning Strategies (PAWS) Athletics & Recreation has placed the highest priority on supporting its student-athletes in all facets of university life, focusing specifically on helping foster success in the classroom.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING York University is one of only a handful of institutions in Canada that has two dedicated strength and conditioning coaches for its student-athletes. The Lions work closely with strength and conditioning staff, who create programs based on the needs of the athlete and coaches on high-performance lifts and movements. Team and individual workouts are available and education on all aspects of strength and conditioning is provided, including proper warm-ups and cool-downs, plyometrics, power, energy systems development, strength and flexibility. Programs are created for both in-season and off-season workouts. Every training session is designed for the needs of the athlete and individual sport. The training phase and focus changes throughout the year and are based on the competition schedule and off-season periodization program. The strength and conditioning coaches also work closely with the athletic therapy group on rehabilitating injured players. All Lions have access to the varsity strength and conditioning centre, which is for the exclusive use of our student-athletes. Training here allows you to work in a high-performance environment where all equipment and programming is selected with the needs of the high-performance athlete in mind.

SPORT INJURY CLINIC

The PAWS Program provides tutoring across multiple subjects for all students, mentoring from senior student-athletes, academic advising through our academic services coordinator and many of our faculty, and access to our vast network of alumni. Athletic Scholarships

The Gorman/Shore Sport Injury Clinic features a full staff of athletic therapists and team doctors with significant experience in the medical field, and many of the doctors are recognized as some of the top experts in the country in their specific fields.

York University is committed to helping students with demonstrated financial need meet the direct education costs associated with university studies (tuition, books and mandatory course fees). Financial assistance can be provided from a variety of sources including OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, private awards and employment. Athletics & Recreation understands the importance of providing Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) to entering student-athletes and has developed a number of awards, valued at $22,500 each ($4,500 per year up to five years). These awards are given annually to elite student-athletes that have achieved an 80% entering average and maintain a 6.0 grade point average.

In addition to sport medicine physicians, York employs a large variety of specialists including an orthopedic surgeon, dentist, neurosurgeon, radiologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, osteopath, pedorthist and a mental health specialist. The team brings to York experience at multiple Olympic Games and world championships, as well as with professional and amateur athletes in a variety of sports. The sport injury clinic is a teaching clinic, with students from the Athletic Therapy Certificate Program doing their clinical placements under the direct supervision of the clinic manager and supervisor. Because of this, most medical care for student-athletes is free of charge. Each Lions varsity team is assigned at least one student athletic therapist who spends the entire season with the team and attends all practices and games. Lions student-athletes also have access to a fully-equipped clinic for all of their treatment needs.
