season outlook Expectations are high in 2019 for a York Lions women’s soccer squad that is looking to turn regular-season results into playoff success. The Lions have been one of the top teams in the OUA West Division over the last five years. They have finished among the top three four times and earned a bye through the first round of the playoffs three times, including last year when they were the second seeds after a solid 10-4-2 record. However, they have just one Final Four appearance to show for it (2015) and have seen their season end in heartbreaking fashion, by penalty kicks, four times. “I think experience is important,” said master coach Carmine Isacco about what his team needs to do to take the next step. “We had a lot of young players in situations they’d never been in before but now they’ve been through it and we hope the experience translates. We have a lot of work to do to get to that point.”
“
The Lions will also rely on a high-scoring offence to get the job done. The team scored 31 goals in last year’s regular season, the second-highest total in the division and the main reason the team finished in second place in the standings. The squad graduated its leading scorer, Christina Morelli, but otherwise returns every player that recorded a point for the team last season. That group includes reigning OUA West rookie of the year Kalifornia Mitchell and dynamic forward Kiyani Johnson. Mitchell was also an OUA West first-team all-star after scoring four goals in her debut season, while Johnson is a former allstar who missed most of last year but returned with six games remaining and averaged more than one goal per game, with seven in the regular season and another two in their lone playoff contest. While the Lions are looking to field a more veteran roster this season, there are still rookies at each position who will
“”
I think we are going to be a good possession team and that will be important. we just need to get better in the proper moments. CARMINE ISACCO, MASTER COACH
The team will rely on a strong defensive group this year and the backline will be anchored by a pair of third-year defenders in Jessica Lush and Teni Odetoyinbo. Both of them were OUA all-stars last year after their tremendous play as sophomores, and with additional experience under their belts the sky is the limit for what they can accomplish. Controlling the play in the midfield will be one of the squad’s captains in Farkhunda Muhtaj, who is coming off a season in which she tallied an OUA-leading 11 assists. Fourth-year midfielder Kendra Saxton and sophomore Jotam Chouhan are also key pieces. Saxton has played in 37 career games, including starting 12 last season, while Chouhan played in every contest as a rookie and started 10. They are both technically sound and have great vision, and they provide experience and stability at the position.
be called upon right away, among them midfielder Joselyn Gagliardi, defender Vanessa Pasqualitto and forward Marissa Castellano. “We never look too far ahead,” said Isacco when pressed for his expectations for the season. “I think we are going to be a good possession team and that will be important. We just need to get better in the proper moments.” Those “proper moments” will come in late October when the playoffs begin and the goal is to advance further into the post-season. Before that can happen, however, the Lions will be in a tough battle every weekend throughout the regular season as they work towards what they hope will be a deep run.

master coach Carmine Isacco was named the head coach of the Lions men’s soccer team in 2007 and has built the program into one of the best in U SPORTS. He is now the master coach of York’s soccer program, overseeing both the men’s and women’s teams, as well as the first assistant coach for York9 FC in the Canadian Premier League (CPL). The Lions men’s team has made nine appearances at the national championships with him at the helm and has won four national banners (2008, 2010, 2014-15). They are also sixtime OUA champions under his guidance (2007, 2013-15, 2017-18) and have won provincial medals in 11 of the 12 years he has led the program. The Lions have finished first in the OUA West Division in each of his 12 seasons and have earned the No. 1 spot in the weekly U SPORTS rankings at least once in each year since he took over. In 2015, he guided the women’s soccer team to an undefeated regular season (15-0-1) and the team was ranked as high as No. 2 in the U SPORTS rankings. Isacco is a six-time recipient of the OUA men’s coach of the year award, (2007, 2010, 2012-14, 2016) and won his first OUA women’s coach of the year award in 2015. He is also a two-time U SPORTS coach of the year (2007, 2014) and a three-time York coach of the year (2010, 2015-16).
In 2015 he served as a guest coach with the Canadian senior men’s team for a pair of friendlies in advance of World Cup qualifying, and he was an assistant coach with the U22 team at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. He joined the Lions after spending two seasons as the head coach of the men’s team at the University of Toronto, where he led the Varsity Blues to a pair of OUA silver medals and a CIS silver medal in 2005. His coaching career has also seen him claim a national championship with the Hearts-Azzurri S.C. in the U18 division. In addition to his role as club head coach for Hearts-Azzurri, he also served as the club’s general manager, responsible for the administration of over 2000 young soccer players. As head coach of Toronto Supra in the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL), Isacco was named coach of the year in 2002 in the Ontario Youth Soccer League. As a player, Isacco took to the pitch at the University of Maryland, where he was named a freshman all-American and a three-time all-ACC first team member. In 1993 he participated in the World University Games. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Maryland, he turned professional and played four seasons with the Toronto Italia Soccer Club in the National Soccer League (NSL). In his first season with the club he was named goalkeeper of the year and he also received Canadian all-star status three times. Following his stint in the NSL, Isacco was a player and assistant coach for the Milwaukee Rampage in the A-League. While with Milwaukee, he was named an all-league first-team all-star, playoff MVP and he captured a league title in 1997. He has also spent time with the Rochester Rhinos and Toronto Lynx as a player/assistant coach in the A-League. His indoor playing career in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) saw him claim a league title in 1998 with the Milwaukee Wave and he was named a league all-star while playing for the Edmonton Drillers. Other stops in the indoor NPSL include the Toronto Shooting Stars and Buffalo Blizzard.

YORK LIONS
player profile One conversation with Teni Odetoyinbo and it’s clear she is going places in life. The third-year defender on the York Lions women’s soccer team is smart, motivated, hard-working and has a tremendous amount of confidence that makes it known nothing will stand in the way of her achieving her goals. Even from a young age that conviction was evident. She got into soccer at the age of four because an older, male cousin told her she couldn’t do it and she wanted to prove him wrong. She tried other sports as well but loved soccer the best and she never left. “Once you get the rush of scoring your first goal, it’s addictive. But my favourite thing to do was slide tackle people,” Odetoyinbo states about her first experiences in the sport. “I started as a striker and that wasn’t for me. I kept going further and further down the field until I found centre back and realized that was my place. I still get to slide tackle. And there’s more of a leadership role being in the centre of the field and seeing everything and directing people.”
Odetoyinbo dreams of following in the footsteps of her father and becoming a litigation lawyer. She’s currently pursuing her undergraduate degree in the Schulich School of Business, one of the most difficult programs at York, and intends to go to law school next. “I have some strict Nigerian parents that demand a certain calibre of school I have to go to,” she said with a laugh when asked why she chose Schulich. “But my sister went through Schulich and highly recommended it. I want to be successful in life and so I wanted to put myself in an environment that is competitive. I’m hoping to go to law school after and this is a stepping stone of a good education.” Just as she has excelled in the classroom, Odetoyinbo has flourished on the soccer pitch and has already asserted herself as one of the best centre backs in the conference. She started 12 games as a rookie and every contest last year and is the anchor of the Lions’ defence. Last season she was recognized by the OUA as a first-team all-star, a tremendous feat for a young defender. Her speed, technical ability and soccer IQ make her a dangerous player and she is only getting better, a scary thought for the rest of the league. Odetoyinbo has already experienced success in many facets of life and she is just scratching the surface. There’s no doubt that will continue as she continues to pursue her dreams.
York head coach Carmine Isacco recognized right away that he had a special leader in the fold and has already made her one of the team captains even though she has been with the Lions for only two seasons. Odetoyinbo is grateful for the opportunity and knows it will help her in her career one day. “Soccer has always been a big thing where I am keeping fit and learning how to work with other people. In these last two years, Carm has been hammering me on being a leader on the team and that is something that is going to drive me over the course of my life. I’ve been learning lessons that really transcend soccer. I want to be a boss in my life and being able to establish those skills now is really helpful.”
GETTING TO KNOW TENI Pre-game rituals? Before every game I use my roller on my back and then listen to gospel music for 20 minutes. I also have to eat red Starburst candy right before I go out on the field! Favourite childhood movie? Billboard Dad! The one with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. I’ve seen it over 100 times. One thing on your life’s bucket list? I want to go go-karting in Japan. I saw it in Twitter and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. Role model? My dad. I look up to him a lot. He learned a lot of things on his own, not in formal education, and he puts his all into everything he does.
