YORK LIONS

SEASON OUTLOOK It’s a new era for the York University Lions women’s soccer team but the end goal of a championship season remains the same. The Lions have been one of the most dominant teams in the OUA over the last three regular seasons with 38 wins and six ties in their 48 contests. However, each season has ended in heartbreaking fashion with a trio of penalty kicks losses in the playoffs, preventing the team from playing for a conference championship and qualifying for the national tournament. Expectations remain high that the Lions can be in position to challenge for the top again this season, but it will be a new roster of players leading the squad after the graduation of many of the top starters over the past couple of years, most notably scoring leader Nour Ghoneim, who is now part of the coaching staff. Head coach Carmine Isacco worked hard in the off-season to rebuild the roster and is optimistic the Lions will continue to sit near the top of the standings. “We have done a lot of recruiting and we have brought in a number of good young players who will have the opportunity to make an impact right away,” said Isacco. “We don’t want to have a drop-off or talk about rebuilding. We’ve set a standard here and will continue to maintain it. We will not focus on what we lost but on what we have, and we’ve added some exciting new players.” Yoana Peralta has the potential to make an immediate difference in the midfield thanks to her creativity and technical ability, and fellow rookie Ally Bruder is a speedy wing player who is particularly strong in one-on-one situations. On the back end, Jessica Lush is a 5-foot-10 defender who came to York from Nova Scotia and will give opposing offences fits as they try and get past her to the goal. They will have some tremendous veterans to guide them on the field this season in team captains Tomika McIntosh and Christina Morelli. McIntosh is a two-time OUA West allstar centre back and is the leader for the Lions’ defence, while Morelli has played at both midfield and forward and has scored 10 goals in her career, including six last year to finish third in team scoring. Also up front, Ashley Nater returns for her fifth season of eligibility and second with the Lions, and Farkhunda Muhtaj

is coming off a breakout sophomore campaign in which she started nine games. In Nater’s debut season, she started all 16 matches and scored a pair of goals. The defence will be anchored by Mika Richards, a national team player who has represented Canada at a number of international events and also spent one season in the NCAA at Harding University. The net will be locked down by Taylor Grant, who enters her fifth and final season as one of the best goalkeepers in the OUA. She has started 29 regular-season contests over the last two years, has posted 13 cleansheets and ranked in the OUA’s top five in goals against average and save percentage both years. Isacco knows he will need all of his players to come together in order for the Lions to reach the goals they have set for themselves. “The team is the strength, and we’ve been focused on how we perform as a group defensively and in the attack. The most important thing for us is having a lot of contributors doing their parts to benefit the whole.” If they can do that, the Lions will have a real chance to take the next step and earn a trip to Winnipeg this November with a berth at the national championships.

We don’t want to have a drop-off or talk about rebuilding. We’ve set a standard here and will continue to maintain it. CARMINE ISACCO - HEAD COACH

CARMINE ISACCO MASTER COACH Carmine Isacco was named the head coach of the Lions men’s soccer team in 2007 and has built the program into one of the best in the CIS. He is now the master coach of York’s soccer program, overseeing both the men’s and women’s teams. The Lions men’s team has made six appearances at the CIS championships with him at the helm and have won four national banners (2008, 2010, 2014, 2015). They are also four-time OUA champions under his guidance (2007, 2013-15) and have won provincial medals in eight of the nine years he has led the program. The Lions have finished first in the OUA West Division in each of his nine seasons and have earned a No. 1 ranking in the weekly CIS pool at least once in each year since he took over. Isacco is a five-time recipient of the OUA men’s coach of the year award, (2007, 2010, 2012-14), a two-time CIS coach of the year (2007, 2014) and a four-time York coach of the year (2010, 2014-16). In 2015 he served as a guest coach with the Canadian senior men’s team for a pair of friendlies in advance of World Cup qualifying, and he was also an assistant coach with the U22 team at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. Isacco joined the Lions after spending two seasons as the head coach of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, where he led the team to a pair of OUA silver medals and a CIS silver medal in 2005. His coaching career has also seen

After graduating with a bachelor of arts degree from Maryland, he turned professional and played four seasons with the Toronto Italia Soccer Club in the National Soccer League (NSL). In his first season with the club he was named goalkeeper of the year and he also received Canadian allstar status three times. He also played pro in the A-league, winning a league title in 1997 with Milwaukee and earning all-star honours and the playoff MVP award. Isacco was the goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC in their inaugural MLS season. Following his stint in the NSL, Isacco was a player and assistant coach for the Milwaukee Rampage in the A-League. He has also spent time with the Rochester Rhinos and Toronto Lynx as a player/assistant coach in the A-League. His indoor playing career in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) saw him claim a league title in 1998 with the Milwaukee Wave and he was named a league allstar while playing for the Edmonton Drillers. PLAYER PROFILE TOMIKA McINTOSH A young York Lions women’s soccer team will benefit greatly from a strong leader this season, and fifth-year veteran Tomika McIntosh is up to the challenge. The team captain has been a leader for the squad in recent years. As one of only two players remaining from the 2013 recruiting class, she will play an even bigger role this season as she helps to guide a young roster that features 18 players in their first or second year with the program.

of the last two years. She has been the anchor for a defensive unit that is the best in the OUA over the last three years, allowing a conference-low 18 goals in 48 matches, and thrives at a position she calls her favourite of all she has played. “Centre back is the most exciting position for me. I like being able to see the whole field, to instruct everyone in front of me and to give those hard tackles. I also like the chance to make the winning save off the goal line; I live for that, it’s so exciting!” That desire to instruct has led McIntosh to pursue a career as a teacher. She graduated from York last year with her degree in kinesiology and health science and returned this fall to enrol in teacher’s college. She would like to be a high school teacher in the future and plans to continue playing for Vaughan. In the short term, however, she is focused on one last season with the Lions and being a strong leader on and off the pitch.

“I want to leave with them having built a strong connection with each other,” said McIntosh about her goals as captain. “It’s going to be a lot of work this year, but I want them to understand the legacy from what we’ve had before. I’m the last one from the other generation and I want them to know what we’ve worked so hard for in the past so they can work towards that same level.” McIntosh has come a long way since her first days enrolled in the sport as a six-year-old. “I was a dandelion picker when I started! There was no sign of a future in soccer at all. But I grew to love it as I got older. I loved the people the most, it was exciting to go to practice and tournaments with them and that made it easier to stick with it.” She has spent her entire club career in Vaughan, and from there was selected for regional and then provincial teams. It was through her club program that she first met York head coach Carmine Isacco, and he convinced her to continue her soccer career with the Lions. The Lions have been fortunate to have her. She has played in 49 regular-season games and an additional six playoff contests over her first four seasons, including starting all 16 last year at centre back, and she is a two-time OUA West all-star in each

Provincial and national team titles, combined with numerous athletes and coaches who have participated on many of Canada’s national teams, attest to the success of York’s varsity program. Since the inception of organized sport competition in 1965, York has won 173 provincial banners and 36 national titles. Athletics & Recreation offers 19 varsity sport teams that compete in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). The varsity sport teams are guided by a tremendous coaching staff that is composed of NCCP certified professionals, many of whom also hold leadership positions in provincial and national sport organizations and are experts in their field of coaching. The staff includes more than 100 dedicated full-time and part-time coaches.

Financial assistance can be provided from a variety of sources including OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, private awards and employment. Athletics & Recreation understands the importance of providing Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) to entering student-athletes and has developed a number of awards, valued at $22,500 each ($4,500 per year up to five years). These awards are given annually to elite student-athletes that have achieved an 80% entering average and maintain a 6.0 grade point average.

development, strength and flexibility. Programs are created for both in-season and off-season workouts. Every training session is designed for the needs of the athlete and individual sport. The training phase and focus changes throughout the year and are based on the competition schedule and off-season periodization program. The strength and conditioning coaches also work closely with the athletic therapy group on rehabilitating injured players. All Lions have access to the varsity strength and conditioning centre, which is for the exclusive use of our student-athletes. Training here allows you to work in a high-performance environment where all equipment and programming is selected with the needs of the high-performance athlete in mind.

In addition to sport medicine physicians, York employs a large variety of specialists including an orthopedic surgeon, dentist, neurosurgeon, radiologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, osteopath, pedorthist and a mental health specialist. The team brings to York experience at multiple Olympic Games and world championships, as well as with professional and amateur athletes in a variety of sports. The sport injury clinic is a teaching clinic, with students from the Athletic Therapy Certificate Program doing their clinical placements under the direct supervision of the clinic manager and supervisor. Because of this, most medical care for student-athletes is free of charge. Each Lions varsity team is assigned at least one student athletic therapist who spends the entire season with the team and attends all practices and games. Lions student-athletes also have access to a fully-equipped clinic for all of their treatment needs.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING York University is one of only a handful of institutions in Canada that has two dedicated strength and conditioning coaches for its student-athletes. The Lions work closely with strength and conditioning staff, who create programs based on the needs of the athlete and coaches on high-performance lifts and movements. Team and individual workouts are available and education on all aspects of strength and conditioning is provided, including proper warm-ups and cool-downs, plyometrics, power, energy systems
