SHINE BRIGHT TONIGHT P R E S E N T E D BY P L E D G E ®
The holidays are all about shared moments with family and friends. As the host, it’s your moment, too— a chance to show off your beautiful home, unique style and perfectly polished entertaining skills. Try these tips for a celebration everyone will love and the sweet satisfaction that you made it all happen.
3 / BEAUTIFY IT Add gentle beauty and protection to most hard surfaces with Pledge® Lemon Enhancing Polish. It removes dust and fingerprints, leaving a beautiful shine and a refreshing scent, and provides a protective, glossy coating with no waxy buildup.
1/ PREPARE IT Focus your chef skills on one main dish. For the rest, opt for starters and sides that can be prepared in advance and served at room temperature.
4 / DIM IT Everything looks better by candlelight. For instant ambience and a touch of drama, opt for the soft, warm glow of tapers, votives, lanterns or string lights.
5 / SET IT 2/ ARRANGE IT Move sofas and chairs to create one big conversation area where every guest will feel included.

modern classic Designer Brooke Wagner took traditional picks—black and white tile, Shaker-style cabinetry—and put a fresh spin on them. She had floor and wall tiles laid in different patterns and chose mossy green paint for the vanity. Another twist in her mix: brass pulls and matte black fixtures. “Since they’re all simple, they complement each other,” she says.

Gotta love a trimming tradition, but why not spruce it up? Here are eight fresh looks to inspire you.
rainbow pop “Few things are more aesthetically pleasing than the spectrum of the rainbow,” says Nashville-based organizing expert Clea Shearer of The Home Edit. Playing with different ornament shades and shapes adds to the fun. Clea’s also done this on a white tree, which has a high-contrast look.
HGTV Magazine 47
rustic + posh “As a compromise, my husband and I switch between a themed tree and a traditional one every other year,” says Heidi Rew, a lifestyle podcast host in Atlanta, GA. She went cozy for this creation, blending buffalo check fabric, fauxfur garland, and white felt flowers with mint and gold ornaments. The letters are her family members’ initials.
That tree skirt is actually a furry blanket I had, folded to fit. I look for ways to save since I often change up my decor. —Heidi Rew
christmas village To create this version of the classic Christmas display, Gilbert, AZ, blogger Kelli Mullins of Lolly Jane painted cardboard houses from consumercrafts.com, tacked on itty-bitty wreaths made out of pipe cleaners, and nestled them in with bottlebrush trees. “We don’t get much snow here in Arizona,” she says, “so I like that they look as if they’re surrounded by snow.”

’80s tribute True to that decade, Austin, TX, blogger Kara Whitten of A Kailo Chic Life did not hold back: Her white flocked tree has stripes, squiggles, and terrazzo patterns, along with flashy iridescent ornaments and disco balls. As she says, “Childhood nostalgia can look really modern.”
simply stylish Gold tinsel garland is the star of this faux spruce in the home of Albuquerque, NM, blogger Amy Weir of Delineate Your Dwelling. “It’s easier to clean up than my Grandma Gloria’s silver tinsel icicles, but just as magical,” she says. A chic pair-up: round plastic ornaments painted solid colors and homemade twotoned pom-poms.
fun decorating ombré cool Spray paint on a white faux tree created this dramatic winter wonderland. Lake Elsinore, CA, blogger Angie Ramirez of Little Inspiration used Satin Black, Matte Deep Gray, and Pewter Gray (all by Krylon), from the bottom up. “To keep the focus on the ombré, I matched ornaments to the paint, with clear plastic ones on top,” she says.
the blues Blue trees are a thing, and they’re beautiful. Pittsburgh, PA, blogger Michael Wurm Jr. of Inspired by Charm chose a range of dark and light blues but also veered into teal and lime green. “I strung copper bauble garland for a bit of contrast and more fullness,” he says. The vintage topper, also copper, is from eBay.
so sweet Doughnut, cupcake, lollipop, and gingerbread house ornaments make for one tempting tree. Indianapolis, IN, blogger Chelsea McDonnough of Two Twenty One has been collecting them for a few years. “They get lost in the mix on my main tree,” she says, “but shine on a small one.”

“This is funkier than your typical dining room,” says designer Michelle Gage. “I love the combo of loud-and-proud wallpaper, two modern floral light fixtures instead of one, and dipped chairs. Still, we honored our 1920s home’s heritage—we added molding to look like it’s original. Now the room is worthy of entertaining…and Instagram!”

“A laundry closet or laundry room is a great spot to give bold colors a go,” says designer Justina Blakeney. “We ended up going with a stackable washer and dryer. It’s easy enough to use a step stool, and worth it to save the space. The floating shelf usually holds laundry detergents, unless I’m styling a photo! how bad is it?
Straight answers to scratch-your-head questions. NOT BAD AT ALL!
NOT SO BAD!
KINDA BAD!
PRETTY BAD!
REALLY BAD!
SUPER BAD!
how bad is it to have personal packages sent to your office? “First find out if your workplace has a policy on this—an increasing number of midsize and large companies do,” says Andrew Jensen, founder of Sozo Firm in New Freedom, PA, which advises businesses on efficiency. Even when employees are allowed to get packages as a perk, it’s best to limit them to one or two per week—especially this time of year, when mailrooms are extra busy processing business gifts. If your company bans it but you’re buying a pricey item or something that needs a signature (and you feel it’s easier and safer to receive it at your job) talk with the mailroom; they may be willing to grant the occasional exception. how bad is it to flat-out tell your partner which presents you want? If asking makes you feel guilty or greedy, rest assured that, for many partners, knowing a significant other’s wishes alleviates the pressure and anxiety that can accompany gift-giving, says Theresa DiDonato, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychology at Loyola University Maryland who specializes in relationships. And you can get creative with how you put in your requests. Try a playful text, create a Pinterest board, or make a wish list on a site like Gift Hero or Hinted (you can save stuff from any site or app and share the list). “That can become a special tradition,” says DiDonato. “The fun of the surprise isn’t lost, and, at the same time, you’re guaranteed to love what you receive.”
NOT BAD AT ALL!
Don’t do it. Research has found that kitchen sponges can be even germier than a toilet, says Charles Gerba, Ph.D., a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona. If you used your sponge or dish rag to clean up after food prep, for example, it could have gotten contaminated by bad bacteria that you don’t want to spread to your table—or your countertops, either. Use paper towels or a clean cloth for tables and countertops and cleaners geared toward your surfaces. Opt for paper towels, plus a disinfectant spray cleaner, after food prep. Ideally, experts say, replace your sponge at least weekly. And limit it to the job it’s meant for: scrubbing dirty pots, pans, and dishes (with dishwashing liquid).

how bad is it to not want your kid to bring home the class pet? There are legit reasons to turn a teacher down, like allergies or a pet at home who won’t tolerate an unfamiliar furry visitor. But if it’s a matter of not wanting to deal with guinea pig poop, make a parental sacrifice. “When you don’t let a child participate at all, they could end up feeling left out when other kids talk about their time at home with the class pet,” says Michele Borba, an educational psychologist based in Palm Springs, CA. “Inclusion is important to kids—they learn better when they feel like part of a group.” One-on-one time with Scruffles can help teach a child responsibility. If you’re not game to host him for, say, winter break, request a weekend.
Come on! I’ll be the quietest houseguest ever.
KINDA BAD!
Play it safe and get a new one. In a pinch, if no wires are sticking out of the cord, you can wrap the frayed area with a bit of electrical tape and then use it. “But when certain internal wires are poking out and touching, using the charger could damage the device or hurt you,” says Jessa Jones, Ph.D., owner of iPad Rehab, a device repair shop in Honeoye Falls, NY. Plugging a corrupt charger into a phone can cause a short circuit, and, in rare instances, a fire. If you’re near an electrical conductor, like a metal necklace or water on the counter, you might get a shock. And, of course, a power surge can fry a phone’s charging port, battery, or motherboard. Some phones and chargers have built-in protection to avoid this damage, but don’t bank on it, especially if you’re using a cheapie charger.

host a great secret santa DO try a gift theme. It can be helpful for guests to have a starting point. You could specify one type of gift—say, hats, calendars, or games—or go with a broad idea, like around the world or stock the bar cart. DON’T rush it. “Have people pick names a few weeks in advance to allow for time to shop,” says Diane Gottsman, founder of The Protocol School of Texas in San Antonio. An online Secret Santa generator like elfster.com makes matchups a super-simple task.
ILLUSTRATIONS BY LAB PARTNERS WRITTEN BY COLLEEN SULLIVAN
DO send an email to guests about a week later reminding them to put only the recipient’s name on the gift tag, not their own name, and to stick with the price cap, says Gottsman. Keep it lighthearted: “Remember, Santa says to keep it under 20 bucks. Don’t mess with Santa!” DON’T give personal items, such as makeup, perfume, or even clothing or lotion, to your present partner. Also avoid inside jokes—fun for the two of you, but not for the crowd.
hang a heavy ornament “I have some cherished ornaments that weigh a lot, so I don’t take chances,” says HGTV designer Brian Patrick Flynn. How he makes sure they stay put: First he strings floral wire through each ornament’s cap. Then he places the ornaments far in on the branches, getting as close to the trunk as possible while still keeping them visible. (Too close to the end of the branch will cause droopage and possibly droppage.) To secure them, he winds floral wire around the branches a couple of times.

bake the best sugar cookies Icing and sprinkles are exciting, but they’re nothing without a great cookie base. This recipe, from Erin Patinkin, CEO and cofounder of the New York City–based bakery Ovenly, has a citrus twist. It makes about 24 cookies. 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 eggs Zest of 1 lemon
½ 1 ¼ 1
To avoid finding sparkles on your floor until June, first suck up as much as possible with a vacuum, says Melissa Homer, chief cleaning officer at MaidPro. Then lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with water and a touch of dish soap, and wipe up any remainders. For errant specks, a lint roller or masking tape wrapped around your hand should do the trick.
teaspoon vanilla extract cup (2 sticks) softened butter cup light brown sugar cup granulated sugar
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two rimmed cookie sheets with
parchment paper. 2. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. In a
separate bowl, combine the eggs, lemon zest, and vanilla extract. 3. In a third bowl, cream together butter and brown and granulated sugars, using a mixer set to medium speed. Mix until fluffy, about 2 minutes. 4. Reduce the mixer to medium-low speed and add in the egg mixture.
Mix until incorporated, about 45 seconds. 5. Add the flour mixture. Mix on low until combined, about 30 seconds. 6. Divide the dough in half. Flour a countertop and, using a floured
rolling pin, roll out half the dough into a ¼-inch-thick circle 10 to 12 inches in diameter. Punch with cookie cutters. 7. Place cut cookies on cookie sheets, 1 inch apart. Repeat with the
other half of the dough and any scraps. 8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until the bottom of the cookies are
golden brown. HGTV Magazine 89

remove candle wax from a menorah, fast These frustration-free strategies, courtesy of Carolyn Forte, cleaning lab director at the Good Housekeeping Institute, work for kinaras, too. Got an all-metal or ceramic menorah? Run it under hot tap water or immerse it in a basin. “That should soften the wax that’s settled inside the candleholders and any that’s dripped down,” says Forte. Once the wax is soft, scrub it with a clean soft-bristled toothbrush. Gently nudge stubborn spots with a metal paper clip or a plastic toothpick. Follow with a wash in hot, sudsy water. Got a wood or wood-trimmed menorah? “Put it in the freezer for 30 minutes to make the wax easy to pop off with your fingernail or a dull knife,” says Forte. “If it doesn’t fit in the freezer, try a hair dryer set to low—it’ll soften the wax so you can peel it off.” And to prevent drips… Use beeswax candles and avoid placing a menorah in a drafty location.
make a cool holiday punch This crowd-pleasing orange and pomegranate punch (alcohol optional) is from Morgan Greenhalgh of The Drink Blog. It yields about 12 cups without the rum and 16 cups with it. 1 2 4 4
cup sugar cinnamon sticks cups unsweetened pomegranate juice cups orange juice
1
cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 cup seltzer 4 cups gold rum (optional) Fresh orange slices
1. Make the cinnamon syrup: In a pot, combine the sugar and 1 cup water. Add the cinnamon sticks, simmer until the sugar completely melts, let cool, then remove the cinnamon sticks. 2. Pour the syrup, the pomegranate, orange, and lemon juices, and the rum (if using) into a big bowl and stir. Transfer to a punch bowl. 3. Add the seltzer and garnish with orange slices. Serve over ice.
keep wreaths and garlands green Nothing says “Happy holidays!” like a house filled with evergreens…until they start to dry out and wither. “Giving greens TLC from the start is key, whether they have leaves or needles,” says Megan George, author of Modern Terrarium Studio. Her fresh tips: • After you bring greenery home, trim the ends by an inch to allow for more water absorption—the more moisture a wreath or garland has, the greener it will be and the fewer needles you’ll lose. Submerge in a plastic bin or tub filled with cool water for up to 10 hours. • Treat with an antitranspirant spray, which wards off moisture loss by adding a protective wax coating (try Wilt Pruf, $15, amazon.com). • If you do lights, go for LED bulbs, which are cooler than incandescent ones and won’t dry out leaves. • Avoid hanging greens in direct sunlight or near heating vents. • Hydrate indoor and outdoor greens using a spray bottle filled with cool water every other day, or daily if one’s in a room with a fireplace.

wo years ago, Luke Caldwell and Clint Robertson of Boise Boys took on a riverfront property with a foundation so shaky they had to tear the house down and start from scratch. They couldn’t have imagined how all their hard work would pay off. “By the end of the project, I was thinking that instead of selling it, my family should move in—it would more than double our square footage,” says Luke. At the time he and his wife, Miranda, had six kids, including four they adopted with special needs (they’ve since adopted again). As teens, they’d each visited orphanages on service trips. “It was heartbreaking to see children, especially those with special needs, not have a family,” says Luke. “Once Miranda and I started our own, we knew we wanted to add to it through adoption.” Everyone felt right at home in the new place. It’s modern yet warm and inviting, thanks to good light, natural textures, and vintage finds. After all, says Luke, “I’d been trying to design a really cool house—it just turned out to be for us!”
living room Going for maximum airiness, Luke and Clint gave this space a 20-foot-high ceiling and two-story windows. It’s cozied up by a gas fireplace clad in smooth cedarwood, with soapstone on the hearth. Aggregate concrete floors with embedded river rocks stand up to occasional basketball dribbling. The 1960s leather sofa and the rockers are from Boise Vintage—Luke had the chairs reupholstered in buffalo check fabric from JoAnn.

dining room This spot off the kitchen, where both meals and schoolwork happen, is bustling all day long. Luke brought in pops of color with yellow chairs by Coavas and a wall hanging by local artist Kate Crowley-Gilbert. “I don’t like spaces that seem cold or sterile, so Luke gave every room softness,” says Miranda. Here it’s a round table (vintage) and a woven pendant (from Candelabra). The wood piece against the wall is a refurbished plant stand, found at Boise Vintage.

kitchen One of Luke’s early visions for the house was a matte black kitchen. “It contrasts nicely with wood and makes the appliances blend in seamlessly,” says Luke. The cabinets and the island are from IKEA, and he got vintage green pendants from a local flea market to play up the hints of green veining in the black soapstone counters. Industrialstyle counter stools from Craigslist provide the perfect place to perch with hot chocolate after playing in the snow.

master bedroom Luke and Miranda got a king bed for the first time—their old place didn’t have the space—and it’s appreciated by everyone. When Luke designed the room, he was going for something unexpected. “I thought the ‘Love Always’ sign, which I had made as a headboard, was romantic,” says Luke. (Yes, it has a dimmer.) The rug, nightstand, and dresser are vintage finds.
Black paint sets a mood—and sometimes that mood is ‘movie night in Mom and Dad’s room!’ —Luke
master bathroom “I love a bath at the end of the day, so I think Luke was channeling me in here,” says Miranda. He paired the fiberglass tub by AKDY with a floating vanity he designed that’s topped with black soapstone. Tall mirrors from IKEA look even sleeker with globe pendants hung low in front—since they’re seethrough, they don’t obstruct the view in the mirrors.

Anyone who needs a quiet spot—whether Miranda’s preparing homeschool lessons or one of the kids is playing a computer game—can find it in here. Normally the wire shelves are filled with books and plants, but they got cleared out for an Advent calendar made of gift boxes, with a treat in each one. Ever the retro furniture fan, Luke found the military desk at a thrift store and the chair at a garage sale, then had it reupholstered.

front hall The floating concrete staircase is one of Luke’s favorite features in the house—shout-out to Clint for helping make it structurally sound. It’s spruced up for the holidays with cypress garland and black-and-white bows, while wrapped presents ready to be doled out to extended family do double duty as decor.

hen Jessica and Kyle Tompane lucked into their dream location for a home—a property in Coronado, CA, next door to their best friends—they set out to build a fantasy house to match. As a designer, Jessica had done her fair share of dreaming. “I had all this pent-up energy, like, I want to use all the pretty things! ” she says. “With a brandnew house, we had the opportunity to make it uniquely us with lots of details.” Topping her list: graphic tile, creative built-ins, and wallpaper put up in unexpected ways. For furniture, she picked simple shapes and cozy textures, then went all in on ooh-where’d-youget-that accessories, creating a welcoming place to hang out with their daughter and, of course, their nearby pals. In the Tompane house, it really is all about the small stuff.

entry •Chic organizers. Wallmounted pockets and a tobacco basket, all from Ballard Designs, hold papers, presents, and cards. Hung in line with the stairs, they greet visitors in style.
•A bench seat with edge. Denim blue fabric on top and tan on the sides make it distinct.
•Slide-out baskets. Wheeled woven ones come in handy for scarves and Paisley’s backpack; they’re from HomeGoods, as is the pink-and-white rug.

living room •Built-ins, but better. The custom cabinets have Gothic arch details inspired by a trip the couple took to Prague. Those fireplace surround panels are actually speakers for the sound system.
•Colorful seating. A coral tweedy sectional by Kravet has space for the whole fam to stretch out—pass the popcorn and the remote!
•A big “wow!” on the wall. Jessica fell for the quatrefoil mirrored piece at a local antiques shop, bought it without knowing where she’d put it, then found a standout spot.

bathroom •Cool tile tricks. Tile that runs from the floor to a wide stripe in the shower draws the eye up to the ceiling, making the room seem larger.
•Look-twice lighting.
master bedroom •Fancy wallpaper, with a twist. “We wanted a look that’s as special as the pitched roof,” says Jessica. She ended this Schumacher pattern partway up and capped it with 6-inch-wide molding.
Jessica chose swing-arm sconces and a wiry red lantern by Visual Comfort because, she says, “they don’t look like stereotypical bathroom lights.”
•A ritzy mirror. A fancy pewter vintage find balances out the modern vanity.
•Cozy flair. The luxe, velvety textures of the wine-color rug and the bed’s upholstery—both by Kravet—make the room especially inviting.
•Not-the-same-old curtains. Jessica added funky trim that matches the wallpaper colors. FOR SOURCES, SEE PAGE 127.

paisley’s bedroom •Wallpaper borders where? Yes, there! Jessica made the accent wall of Cole & Son diamonds even more fab by layering on a wallpaper border with similar colors— see the span of gumdrop shapes between the windows?
•Magical beds. Twin beds from Smartstuff, adorned with wreaths from Curious Blooms on Etsy, have a whimsical feel (and come in handy for reaching the advent calendar from Paper Source).
•A foam beam. It highlights the cathedral ceiling and costs about half the price of a wood one. No one can tell!
wall color Smoky Salmon by SherwinWilliams
bathroom •Jungle-fied walls. Animalpacked paper by Cole & Son is lively scenery for a kid’s bathroom. “Paisley always shows it off to friends,” says Jessica.
•A navy vanity with glitz. The deep color (Loyal Blue by Sherwin-Williams) grounds the wallpaper; crystal-like knobs and pulls from San Diego Hardware add some glam.
•More pattern on the floors. Yellow-and-cream cement tiles from Villa & Mission Imports keep the fun going.

Snack and cider time at the Snyders with Beth, Amelia, 8, and Jason. That’s a butler’s pantry beyond the doorway.
here was no joy of cooking in Beth and Jason Snyder’s old kitchen in their Fulton, MO, home. “It was standing room only, and anyone there with you would be blocking the very thing you needed—making dinner and baking solitary activities,” says Beth, founder of the stationery company 1canoe2. So the couple made the space her art studio. Then they reinvented their dining room as an open, welcoming kitchen with a burst of color (that island!) and little touches that bring the bliss, like the display shelf below the windowsill, where Beth sets up her bottlebrush tree collection for the holidays. As she says, “Now this is the room where we always want to hang out.”
create a centerpiece It’s a wonderful world: The couple displays their globe collection on top of an IKEA cabinet that holds wine glasses, serving dishes, and vases. Holiday cards are strung up on a paper garland.

“I was looking for a sunshiny but not-neon color for our island,” says Beth. “This shade (Green Papaya by Behr) is a few clicks down from too loud.” The legs make it as roomy as a table.

Beth and Jason wanted to keep the original walnut trim on the room’s window and door frames, so they did white cabinets and white backsplash tiles to offset it.
The upper cabinet doors have seeded glass for extra charm. “Seeing pretty dishes and bowls, especially the pastel ones, is more exciting than solid doors,” says Beth.
The plates above the doorway, by Donna Wilson, were a gift from Beth’s sister. “The faces reminded her of our family,” says Beth. “I smile every time I glance at them.” FOR SOURCES, SEE PAGE 127.

3 large eggs 1½ teaspoons peppermint extract 3 8-ounce packages cream cheese, at room temperature ¾ cup (1½ sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 1-pound box confectioners’ sugar 20 mini candy canes, crushed
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, granulated and brown sugars, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, oil, eggs, and peppermint extract. Mix into the flour mixture until fully incorporated. Mix in 1 ¼ cups boiling water (the batter will be thin). 3. Divide the batter among the prepared pans and bake until a wood toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Meanwhile, make the icing: In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Beat in the confectioners’ sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
