Editor Ruhi Singh
We have turned 13! A month full of excitement, long work days, sleepless nights, mixed emotions and more, but I wouldn’t trade it in for any other thing. This past year has taught me many lessons, and one that really stands out is just how important it is for us to surround ourselves with an environment that keeps us motivated and happy all the time. Yes, we are talking about “home”. A place that exudes warmth only if you add your unique identity, that personal touch and the exclusive feeling that you belong there. With a foot already in 2020, the team is all set to make a mark in everything that is required for a luxury home. Revolutionary ideas for all your spaces, with an eye on the upcoming trends that would be relevant for the next decade, we present our picks and tips, and we also share the best in Bathroom, Kitchens and Living spaces. Like every year, we are celebrating personalities. This year we focus the light on some interesting creators that have worked towards uplifting and reviving crafts from around the world. Their work is inspiring and it could set off a trend towards sustainable development, for generations to come. I will not reveal more...I will leave it to you, my dear readers. And last but not the least, I can’t thank Benoy, Shruti, Mehak, Yukti, Harpreet and Mangesh enough for keeping the spirit high throughout. Our super hero Ravi for guiding and supporting us in generating luxury-filled pages. A special thanks to all our readers and advertisers, for all the support in keeping The Ideal Home and Garden at the top of your reading list! Today I toast to our collective well-being and for many more years of doing decor together! rs,

THE ART OF

the modern contemporary looks to surprise you
Tier II and tier III cities in India are rapidly expanding. The health of every citizen (young and adult alike) is being compromised within the four walls of the concrete block called home. Architecture as a whole is also a changing phenomena constantly. It’s now or never - the right time has come to bring a change in the mindset of people by building homes using traditional and local materials. This way, not only pollution will be under check, but also awareness of green living will be the focus. It’s important to conserve our fast depleting forests for our future young generations to lead a soulful life. .
The Best Home What makes life easy? Definitely, it’s a good home decor magazine that talks about every aspect of a beautiful home. A magazine that tries it’s best to answer every query that the readers raise. TIHG is one such magazine. The articles are reader-friendly, the visuals are life-size, and there is always a continous flow. There is something that I would like to suggest - how about having a Q&A with renowned architects, builders, and real estate developers. This way, we the readers can keep a track on what’s the latest in the market. Also, I would like more pages dedicated to articles related to indoor and outdoor garden. Finally, I want to reveal that TIHG for me is one of the best from the home decor segment and will remain for years to come.

Master Stroke
A Pleasant Surprise! An accidental discovery is what I would term my first experience with The Ideal Home and Garden. Last month, I picked up the October 2019 issue from my aunt’s home. What lay inside was not only stunning, but also visually appealing and beautiful. What caught my attention – the simple and alluring layouts, meaningful articles with a set purpose of educating the readers, and how to deck up a home as per the changing seasons. This approach of thinking out of the box is what I like. Shopping pages, Decor Ideas, Ideal Living, Ideal Getaway and lot more simply reveal that TIHG is way ahead of the rest – in terms of thought process and attitude. Laxminarayan Tripathy, Professor, Benaras
The homes getting featured in every issue of TIHG is a matter of pride for every loyal reader. A wonderful blend of national and international homes – they spread cheer and happiness. Clean, less-cluttered and a mix of the traditional and the modern would be the right words to describe such homes. Images are more powerful than words goes the saying. It aptly fits the bill when it comes to such pretty homes. They not only make a good read, but also give a wide perspective of how the decor of a home could be done without compromising on space and area. Chandni Bahri, Ladakh

LIGHT IT UP VOA Collection from Serip takes inspiration from Portuguese soul and a dramatic game of shadows and light. The use of technology and materials to present the flawless beauty found in nature is achieved through unique handcrafted techniques and with a blend of superb materials like glass and bronze. This marvellous species of swallows known as “Hirundo Rustica” presents spectacular ballets where they paint the skies like ballerinas. Their funnel-shaped bodies are also a Portuguese icon, which translates our soul in movements and shapes. The unfindable configurations that they perform allow this singular collection to create beautiful visual compositions. Either in suspension or standing on the walls, they create a dramatic game of shadows and light. (S.T. Unicom)

Available in four colours - grey-blue, red, champagne and graphite, the Cotone sofa is available in an elegant modular version with a low backrest as well as a two or three seater sofa with an embracing high back that, thanks to an internal mechanism in its armrest, has adjustable side cushions, which make it even more comfortable. The collection is completed with two low tables in the same colours as the sofa’s frame and a wide selection of matte marble tops, and three light and easy to move coffee tables with a grey-blue, red or champagne aluminium and top.

READ HAPPINESS Designed by Andrea Morgante Shiro Studio for EXTO, Moscova is a bookcase available in two variants black gray carnico marble and black lacquered ash-wood and calacatta gold marble and canaletto walnut wood. According to the designer, Moscova represents an intimate and personal portrait of Milan’s urban fabric and its street, seen as an ordered and romantic landscapes of stone volumes and elevations.
TICK VERSATILITY The Aerozeppelin sofa from the Diesel Living Collection for Moroso was designed as a large “platform” frame, finished with compact and soft pillows that line its back and armrests. This leaves you to use the sofa’s styling at will, according to your needs. The system is simple: the back pillows are made to rotate - they can lay both vertically or horizontally - for two different configurations that make the seat deeper or shallower.

Niharika Rajput (Paper Chirrups) “i believe in realism as it represents the subject truthfully. nature has always been the most intricate and sophisticated mechanism and my aim has always been to be able to replicate that to the very last detail. through my work, i also try to spread awareness of endangered birds around the world.
Revati Jayakrishnan (Rare Studios by Revati) “inspired by geometric patterns, i think of these as a visual manifestation of intricately linked units similar to how events, people, experiences and memories interconnect in our lives. a pattern would be incomplete and non-functional if even a single unit was placed in a different order or removed completely. i also find the illusion of three-dimensionality and infinity intriguing. i have incorporated these ideas to create ceramic works that are interactive and also challenge the preconceptions about the fragility of the material and the methods of making and displaying.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT TIHG asked interior designers and architects a pressing question- ‘HOW CONSCIOUS ARE PEOPLE TOWARDS CONSCIOUS LUXURY? DO THEY THINK THIS AS THE NEED OF THE TIME?’ and got a penny for their thoughts... IMPRESSIONS: SHRUTI JAIN
ANNKUR KHOSLA, FOUNDER, ANNKUR KHOSLA DESIGN STUDIO “Conscious India is a growing number of individuals aware of sustainability, need to conserve water and other natural resources, use of more organic and plant based products and the need to recycle, reuse or up cycle. This genre of thinking has arisen due to the awareness of the physical health requirements as well as the need to preserve the Earth and subsequently the future. The definition of luxury has evolved over a period of time from material objectification to space, time and ethereal qualities in life. It is the need to understand the essence of life and live it with meaning and quality that is the driving force for conscious luxury and I definitely predict its growth exponentially.”

Whether it is in terms of enhanced comfort or lifestyle aspects there is a clear want and willingness amongst clients to spend on various aspects of luxury. From bespoke custom furniture to bathtubs and luxury fixtures to highend material choices to commissioned art. I feel like this is a trend that’s here to stay and will over time shift the concept of what we define as luxury.”
sAnchit ArorA, Founder & PrinCiPAl ArChiteCt, renesA ArChiteCture design interiors “In today’s time, acknowledging the role of the next generation as consumers or as prospective employees plays an important role. Redefining what luxury means today is to take a simplistic approach and deduce design to sustainability, creativity and advancement in the use of technology and material. With growing priority towards the environment, designers and architects are realising the importance of fostering a rational design that employs old techniques and promotes conscious consumption leaving only the materials and process in sight. To put it simply, conscious luxury can be defined as going backward to move forward.

shAntAnu GArG, Founder, shAntAnu gArg design “Luxury, materials and detailing go hand in hand. The materials that we use and their response to certain detail is must for any product or concept to segment it into a luxury. With the advent of vegan movement and awareness towards environmental sustainability people are getting conscious towards the use of luxury products. We are seeing a demand of alternate materials for leather and plastic. The focus has truly shifted towards art , crafts and artisanal quality aesthetics, but narrated in a highly detailed designs made to perfection for the quality look and finesse. Instead people are more focused to get themselves a bespoke environment and customised products limited to themselves. Rugs, furniture, art, curiosity objects, detailed hardware application of metal works, flooring and styling elements like cushions dyed and printed with vegetable dye, linen fabrics, etc. made with materials that’s environmental friendly and uses no animal skin. Conscious Luxury has made designers to evolve practice that focuses on design and highly precised detailing and narrating them in sustainable materials.”
TIHG People
GeetAnjAli AnAnd, PrinCiPAl designer & MAnAging direCtor, AndY hoMe Unlike the fashion industry, where use of furs have been scorned upon for years, leather accessories such as bags, shoes, etc are being manufactured in ‘vegan Leathers’; where fashion brands have started to pledge manufacture of clothes from sustainable and re-useable fibers, the interiors industry still lags behind in this endeavour. Both designers and clients remain quite insensitive to ‘conscious luxury’ in the interiors industry in India. In addition, we don’t have ready access to ‘alternative’ materials at least in the soft interiors space and importers and distributers need to push such options at their end too. Having said that, there is a far greater awareness and availability of materials of construction when it comes to designing and building structures. Architects, designers and clients are all opting for things like solar energy to feed even under floor heating and hot water supply. So, whilst the advancements are significant, we need to sensitise ourselves as designers and end users to address the impending urgency in stalling and hopefully at some point perhaps reversing the disastrous effects of global warming. It is indeed time to get active in promoting, encouraging and using more ecofriendly products without losing the luxury one seeks.”
PriyAnkA khAnnA And rudrAksh chArAn, Co-Founders, 42MM ArChiteCture “The alarming pace of the planet’s deterioration has made conscious luxury one of the most sort after qualities. Clients do not just want good design, craftsmanship and high quality material, but they are willing to pay premium for something beyond. We as designers work to execute eco-friendly designs that do not compromise on the quality and look of the product. Consciousness in luxury can be achieved in a fourfold process beginning at the planning stage. The adequate use of renewable resources such as natural light and plants can accentuate the spatial quality and visual appeal. Following this is the choice of right materials, giving preference to natural and recycled products such as reclaimed wood, cork, ceramic etc. Technology plays the third role. The use of energy efficient lighting fixture, double glazed windows and automation can optimise the energy consumption based on the user’s need. Lastly, the space can be accessorised by revamping old furniture, creating art from scraps and locally sourcing antiques. Hence, sustainable materials in the modern homes disseminate a true sense of luxury defining it beyond its price tag.” The Ideal Home and Garden November 2019 |

t
he home, owned by a married couple with a teenage daughter is located in a prestigious residential complex in Moscow. The apartment is located on the 12th floor of the building and it offers a fantastic view of the surroundings. “The owners wanted an interior in a modern and respectable style. Therefore I decided to create a monochrome colour palette, but then the owners requested me to add a little colour. That’s how the interior with a striking colour palette, stylish furniture and impressive contemporary artwork came to life,” says Oksana Salberg-Vachnadze, the designer. The neoclassical style and the colour white served as the starting point of the interior. The white cornice mouldings create a beautiful contrast with colourful modern furniture and add a certain cultural context. Oksana adds, “The owners came up with many ideas themselves; they visited the iSaloni fair in Milan with me and chose furniture for the living room, the dining room, and the bedroom.” The apartment’s planning is simple and logical: it consists of three rooms with a big living room and a space that combines the kitchen with the dining room, and two bedrooms - master bedroom and the daughter’s bedroom. It also has two bathrooms, two dressing rooms, and a laundry room. Moreover, two loggias were added to the living space, next to the kitchen and the bedroom. The colour scheme of the living room area is bright accents against the white background. The stylish rug with a print imitating stone is a link between furniture items - the sofa, the bright yellow armchair and the coffee table with an openwork metal base. The dining area is combined with the living room. The single space is divided into two areas by a console with art deco table lamps. An unusual chandelier, contemporary artwork and velvet curtains create an atmosphere of aristocratic chic. Wall and ceiling mouldings and herringbone parquet flooring are inspired by the Paris impressions. A Venetian mirror and contemporary console is one of the examples of how effortlessly objects coexist in the home. The handmade mirror is done in a rare, almost lost technique of mirror carving and is unique. A convenient ergonomic kitchen with a kitchen island is stylistical and colour neutral. Oksana says, “It is deliberately not supposed to stand out in an open plan living room/ dining room/ kitchen area. The breakfast table is neutral

The Green Scheme
Kajal Tyagi, shares her journey from a gardening enthusiasts to a designer, a nurturer and parent of her indoor plants r e s e a r c h : P r at h i k s h a B e ta l a
Kajal Tyagi, a gardening enthusiast, DIY aficionado and a closet designer aims to balance her love for curation, gardening and designing to shape, develop and render both form and frame to bland spaces and corners. From the concrete jungle of Mumbai, Kajal’s epiphanic understanding of green homes enabled her to fall for and foster the need for green corners, lights and airy spaces in all her indoor designs. She abides by the doctrine that ‘greenery brightens up indoor spaces and are known to have mood-boosting qualities.’ which also becomes synonymous to an ideal home. As she carelessly treads on blurring the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces, she carefully constructs designs that ensure that home is calming, airy yet secure and attractive. On envisioning home, she states, “A place where you can rest and feel relaxed. This being the centre of my thought process, I mostly dabble in colours which are soothing to eye. Blue and shades of blue are a centre of attraction and green corners with indoor/ outdoor plants and lights are a must!” As a self-titled designer, she is also conscious of the needs of her clients, who are usually friends and acquaintances. Her sense of aesthetics brew from a combination of an understanding of space, vibe, suitability and sustainability. She shares, “For me, it is very important to understand the likes and views of the owner of the house. After I personally the place, I have a fair idea of possible and plausible designs that can be carved out of the location.” Kajal, plays her cards right with familiar material and creates novel spaces in varied combinations. She claims, “I love to try with basics like wood, niche designs that are evergreen; lights that play a major

Feature
role and brighten up the green corners.” On her gardening ventures, Kajal shares, “I love to do the house plants, both indoor and outdoor ones and have dabbled in terrariums and kokoderma.” The variety she hoards, grows and nurtures, range from a collection of more than 500 pots of cacti, succulents, Adeniums apart from various other plants including varieties of water lillies and lotus. Sowing seeds do reap benefits and certainly sprouts responsibilities. Like every plant parent, her maintenance routine is driven with dedication and care. She is both hands on responsible and hands off when it comes to nature’s role in defining both her garden and space. She shares, “I generally spend a part of my day amongst my different terraces to see to the maintenance of my plants. It is generally a day dedicated to each floor with housekeeper and family supporting me.” Kajal’s love for plants and ecologically conscious driven philosophy is evident when she proudly shares, “Today we are able to recycle most of our food waste and eke manure from it. By ensuring a plastic-free space, we have noticed the arrival of birds chirping and cooing on our balcony or the buzz of honey-bees around our flowery pots. With a smile, she states, “Our daughter too enjoys playing with mud and manure now” and passes on the baton of responsibility that keeps her home healthy and beautiful to the future.
Tips • Some low maintenance indoor plants are Ferns, Philodendrons, Pothos, Succulents amongst many others. • One should take care of the basics. Soil should be aptly moist. Make sure the pots are perforated to ensure ample waterflow, for stagnation would ruin the plant. • Light source is a must. However, indoor plants do thrive on limited source of light and water in general. Not-to-do tips The biggest mistake people commit while setting up plants is taking the advice of the roadside maali/nursery on the maintenance of these plants. She insists that their job is to ensure the sale, rather a constant sale of their plants and an error on the owner’s part would only amplify the sales. She shares, “My suggestion would be to do some research on the plant ahead of its purchase.” After all, plant parenting does require planning and hacks are always at our disposal. Since the relaunch of his luxury furniture boutique a couple of years ago, selftaught designer and owner of IOTA, Namit Ajmani has experienced exponential growth and popularity with his reinterpretation of how a furniture store should look like. Those who visit this place knows where this uniquely designed store is. Stated as a prestige symbol and a trademark of Kirti Nagar, IOTA has redefined the market with its stunning and unique exteriors, which effortlessly grabs your attention for a minute. “We cater the elite segment of society and have high-end furniture with us. We are now a concept store.” Namit Ajmani, Managing Director, IOTA
According to Namit Ajmani, MD, IOTA, “We cater to the elite segment of society and have high-end furniture with us. We are now a concept store. By concept store, I mean a shop that combines culture with the business of selling. We sell a curated selection of products that suggest a certain lifestyle or theme. Typically, these products are from different brands and designers and appeal to a certain segment of society. There’s also a focus on experience through the store design, the intermingling of product and additional elements such as home accents”. “We travel extensively looking for brands that are continually innovating and offering a fresh perspective on design and functionality like Ligne Roset and Kartell.
We are proud to be the first retailer to bring these two iconic brands to Delhi. Our selection of brands includes Ligne Roset, Kartell, Innovation Living, Naos, Lenzi, Dienne Salotti, and Arosio Milano”, says Ajmani. The Indian luxury market is expected to reach $27.01 billion by 2020, which is indicative of its current production and constant evolution. People who buy luxury furniture today are well aware of and conversant with global trends. Their purchase decisions are informed by their travels, technology, and taste —it’s a pleasure to know that people who buy furniture from us do their research beforehand and have a good idea about brands and designers as well as the silhouettes that will best suit their interior scheme. Our latest launch is “Dienne Salotti,” this brand embodies attributes of innovation, quality, and artisanal workmanship that are synonymous with “made in Italy.” Founded in 2000 in Altamura, the brand has been handcrafting aesthetically pleasing and functionally robust sofa beds, armchairs, and tables.
