Planning for the success of future generations has long been viewed as one of the most important and worthy efforts an architect can accomplish. As with the historic apprenticeship program, architects throughout the centuries have felt the burden to carry the values and knowledge of the profession forward.

BIO

Edward Kodet, Jr., FAIA, received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Nebraska and a Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota. He began his career at the University of Minnesota as an Adjunct Faculty Member teaching design and working at a local architectural firm. In 1983 he founded Kodet Architectural Group, specializing in historic restoration and the design of educational, religious, public, and recreational facilities. Since graduating, Edward has been very active with AIA Minnesota on the Legislative Committee, Committee on Design, and the Convention Committee. He served on various boards and held several positions, including AIA Minneapolis and Minnesota President. In 2010, he was honored as the AIA Minnesota Gold Medal Recipient. Mr. Kodet has also served in many roles at AIA National, including: the North Central Regional Director in 1998, National Vice-President in 2002, Chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows in 2010, and as the sponsor for Santiago Calatravaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gold Medal in 2005. He is currently active on the National Committee on Design. Investing in the architectural community is an important aspect of Edward's career. He is the former Chair of the University of Minnesota College of Architecture Alumni Association and current Chair of the University of Nebraska Professional Advisory Committee. He has also served at the American Architectural Foundation from 2000 to 2011 where he chaired the Octagon Restoration Committee.

As an important part of advancing the profession, it is critical to recognize those who have shown exceptional leadership at an early stage of their career. This not only sets the stage for those individuals to serve as peer examples, but also to recognize that leadership and commitment to the advancement of the profession is cherished by all members. Serving as 2010 Chancellor of the College of Fellows, it seemed that we could advance our commitment to young architects by adding â&#x20AC;&#x153;to mentor young architects" to our mission statement. This is a profound obligation not only by the College of Fellows but the entire American Institute of Architects. With an ever-increasing commitment to service society, the College of Fellows has a deep gratitude to those interested in the profession as well as to those whose entire life has bettered our communities. We all recognize that our careers depended on our predecessors having the time and patience to set the examples we value today. The Young Architects engage, challenge and enlighten us as to how bright the future is for architecture. This publication contains recognition of individuals who have set and met the highest expectations, and of those who carry forward this commitment without acknowledgment. The Young Architects Forum (YAF), College of Fellows, and The American Institute of Architects are extremely proud of the many who have accepted the challenge to reach new heights in what architecture can do for our world. As you read about those receiving recognition, congratulate and thank them. Also thank those who have decided to make a commitment to joining our profession and will no doubt be building on what we leave behind. We will be judged not on what our generation has done but how well we have set the stage for future generations.

young architects award The Young Architects Award is given to individuals who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession in an early stage of their architectural career.

eligibility Architect members of the AIA who have been licensed to practice architecture fewer than 10 years by the submission deadline are eligible to be nominated; the term young architect has no reference to the age of nominees. Any component, member of the national AIA Board of Directors, knowledge community, or College of Fellows may nominate one or more individuals. aia college of fellows The AIA College of Fellows (COF) seeks to stimulate a sharing of interests among Fellows, promote the purposes of the Institute, advance the profession of architecture, to mentor young architects, and be of ever-increasing service to society. The College of Fellows, founded in 1952, is composed of members of the Institute who are elected to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the architect as an individual but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society. aia young architects forum The Young Architects Forum is the voice of architects in the early stages of their career and the catalyst for change within the profession and our communities. Working closely with the AIA College of Fellows and the American Institute of Architects as a whole, the YAF is leading the future of the profession with a focus on architects licensed less than 10 years. The national YAF Advisory Committee is charged with encouraging the development of national and regional programs of interest to young architects and supporting the creation of YAF groups within local chapters. Approximately 23,000 AIA members are represented by the YAF. YAF programs, activities, and resources serve young architects by providing information and leadership; promoting excellence through fellowship with other professionals; and encouraging mentoring to enhance individual, community, and professional development. GOALS OF YAF: To ENCOURAGE professional growth and leadership development among recently licensed architects through interaction and collaboration within the AIA and allied groups. To BUILD a national network and serve as a collective voice for young architects by working to ensure that issues of particular relevance to young architects are appropriately addressed by the Institute. To MAKE AIA membership valuable to young architects and develop the future leadership of the profession. The Young Architects Forum Leadership consists of: - AdCom (chair, vice-chair, programs adviser, communications adviser, public relations adviser, events adviser, regional liaison adviser); - 18 Regional Liaisons appointed from the 18 geographic regions; - AIA Board of Directors Liaison; - AIA College of Fellows Executive Committee Liaison; - YAF Past Chair; - AIA Emerging Professionals Director. cof and yaf The structure of the national YAF in relation to the COF is the result of past discussions between the two groups focusing on a mentoring initiative, to encourage leadership development and a passing of the torch of insight to the younger group. These discussions led to the realization that the goals of the COF Mentoring Initiative and the YAF were so intertwined as to make an alliance inevitable. The COF/YAF structure provides for a stable leadership organization and a practical information gathering/dissemination system, while offering the benefits of the Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s wealth of experience and insight to younger architects.

Jennifer Workman, AIA, is a licensed architect for Good Fulton & Farrell Architects in Dallas, Texas. Jennifer received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin and focused her studies on various museums throughout the world. These early analysis assisted her when she was selected by GFF to work alongside Morphosis Architects on the design of the new Perot Museum of Nature & Science in their Los Angeles office. Following almost two years in California, she returned to Dallas, Texas to work on the construction site of the iconic museum.

Bradley Benjamin, AIA, is an architect and the founder of Radium Architecture, a firm in Greenville, SC, which works to bring purpose to the built environment by designing more sustainable & socially responsible places. He graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Design, a Bachelor of Science in Construction Science and Management, and a Masters of Architecture.

Adam W. Palmer, AIA, is a Project Manager and Associate with Schmidt Associates, Inc., in Indianapolis, Indiana. Adam is a registered Architect in the State of Indiana (2002). Adam received both his Bachelors of Environmental Design (1995) and his Bachelors of Architecture (1997) from Ball State University. Adam maintains his NCARB Certification and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Brad has consistently demonstrated exceptional initiative, enthusiasm, and commitment on the local, state, regional, and national levels for the AIA. He has served on the National Associates Committee, the AIA Board Knowledge Committee, the Strategic Planning Advance, the Emerging Professionals Companion Advisory Committee, and the YAF 15 Summit committee. He currently serves as state IDP Coordinator and Past President for AIA Greenville. Brad is a previous recipient of the AIA’s Associate Member of the Year Award.

Adam has been fortunate to have had opportunities to practice architecture in a variety of firm types, sizes and disciplines. Adam has also worked on a variety of building types and sizes, including primarily health care and education projects. The projects have ranged from a few hundred square foot renovations to multi-story, thousands of square foot, new construction projects. These various projects have provided him opportunities to also serve a variety of roles as an architect for his clients including: master planner, designer, project Architect, project manager, program manager and owners representative.

Deepika Padam, AIA, LEED AP, is a Senior Designer/Project Manager with Heller Manus Architects at San Francisco, CA. Her previous professional experience is with the firms of Neelkanth Chhaya, Payette Associates, Perlman Architects, and Tate Snyder Kimsey in varied roles of Designer, Architect, Project Manager, and Sustainability Director. Her design experience includes civic, educational, public, commercial, and mixed-use facilities. She is passionate about green building and is responsible for LEED Certification of multiple projects. Deepika received her Bachelor of Architecture from the Guru Nanak Dev University and Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan. She is NCARB certified.

Aside from the museum, Jennifer’s most important contributions to the profession have come in the form of her volunteer work for the AIA at the local, state, and national levels. In Dallas, Jennifer has devoted her time to the Dallas Tour of Homes, Publications Committee, Honors Committee, and Publicity Committee. She has served as a chair on the Associates Committee, the Young Architects Forum, and the Ken Roberts Delineation Competition which is one of the longest architectural drawing competitions in the world. At the Texas Society of Architects she served four straight years as a voting board member as the Dallas Director and the Texas Regional Associates Director to the National Associates Committee. She also served on the jury for the Texas Architectural Foundation and was involved with the Membership Services Committee, Honors Committee, the Continuing Education Committee, and served as a Publicity Committee Chair for the TSA Convention in Dallas in 2011. Nationally, Jennifer is serving as the 2012 Chair of the Young Architects Forum. She has been involved with the YAF since 2009 when she became the Communications Advisor acting as the editor for the bi-monthly publication which was sent to over 22,000 members.

Keenly aware of the importance of architecture in his community’s growth and development, Brad has made a personal commitment to lend his creative talents and problem solving abilities to many local community boards and organizations to which he serves as an exceptional representative of his profession. He serves on the United Way, Leadership Greenville Board of Regents, Pecha Kucha Night Grenville, and Architecture for Humanity Greenville.

Adam's primary interests rest in mentoring, leadership, licensure, practice management and technology. Adam has served on the local level as the President Elect of the Central Kentucky Chapter prior to moving to Indianapolis. In Indianapolis he is currently serving as a Delegate for the Indianapolis Chapter. At the regional and national level, Adam served the Young Architects Forum (YAF) as their Regional Liaison to the Ohio Valley Region for four years. Adam then went on to serve as the 2010 ViceChair and subsequently the 2011 Chair of the YAF National Advisory Committee. During his tenure as the YAF Chair, he served as a juror for various awards. Adam has also served on the Board of Directors for a variety of organizations outside of the AIA.

Deepika served as the AIA Las Vegas President in 2010, the first woman to serve as President with the Chapter. She served as the USGBC Nevada President in 2009 and taught LEED classes for many years. Deepika is the Founder and Past Chair for AIA Las Vegas Emerging Professionals/ Young Architects Forum. She has Chaired many committees and initiatives with local chapters of AIA and USGBC. She has organized educational workshops at regional level, and regularly sits on design juries for architecture schools. Deepika is the Communications Advisor for AIA National Young Architects Forum, serving as the Editor for YAF Connection bimonthly e-magazine and the annual Young Architects Award Book. Deepika was awarded the AIA Nevada Associate Award in 2007 and the AIA Nevada Young Architect Award in 2008. She has been named Who’s Who of Las Vegas by In Business and featured in the Las Vegas Business Press. Deepika is interested in increasing the global ties of AIA and her professional life while staying connected with her passion for design excellence. She plans to devote more time to community initiatives at San Francisco. She enjoys blogging, participating in design juries, and making presentations.

Virginia E. Marquardt, AIA, LEED AP, CDT, is an architect at DLR Group’s Santa Monica, California office with 14 years of experience leading educational, justice, and municipality teams as a project manager and project architect. Throughout Virginia’s career she has felt it important to give back to the profession by serving on numerous AIA boards and committees, at a local, state, regional, and national level. She has held leadership positions at the local level as AIA-Phoenix Metro’s Associate Director, Emerging Professional Director, YAF Committee Chair, Board of Director, Secretary and Treasurer and has been a member of Architecture Week, Membership and Advocates committees. At the regional level, she was AIAWestern Mountain Region’s Young Architect Regional Director from August 2007-2011. In 2009, Virginia was asked to serve on the sub-committee for the 2010 AIA-National Convention Education Committee reviewing abstracts and in 2010 as the Emerging Professional representative for AIA’s Center for Integrated Practice Leadership. Currently, she is serving as the 2012-2013 Events Advisor for AIA National Young Architects Forum’s Advisory Committee and sits on the AIA-National’s Education Committee.

Matthew M. Dumich, AIA, is a licensed Architect and project manager with Valerio Dewalt Train Associates in Chicago. His ten years of professional experience includes a range of commercial, residential and mixed-use buildings and interior projects.

Joseph R. Benesh, AIA, NCARB, CDT, LEED AP, is currently a K-12 Focus Market Leader and Project Manager for RDG Planning + Design in Des Moines, Iowa. In this role, Joe is responsible for the design, documentation, and overall project management of buildings spanning a variety of sizes and complexities. He actively participates in marketing and project leads, develops presentations, fosters and nurtures client relationships, facilitates project scheduling and budgeting, as well as bidding and construction administration.

Jason Dale Pierce, AIA, LEED AP, currently sits on the Young Architects Forum Advisory Committee as the YAF Regional Liaison Advisor. Jason received his Professional Architecture degree from Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. He is a member of the AIA Practice Management Knowledge Community and sits on the editorial board for aecKnowledge. He recently served as CoChair of the AIA San Francisco Mentorship Committee and chaired the Long Range Planning committee for AIA California Council in 2010. He also served as Vice President of the Academy of Emerging Professionals with AIA California Council from 2008 through 2009. A former recipient of the National Jason Pettigrew Memorial ARE Scholarship and honored with the AIA San Francisco's Associate of the Year Award in 2008, Jason also served as the YAF regional Director for Central States from 2003 through 2005.

Virginia strives to share her passion for architecture with others and will always be an advocate for future architects and our profession. In Arizona she was a mentor to Scottsdale high school students through Students: by Design (2010) and is currently mentoring Santa Monica area high school students through the ACE mentoring program (2011). She has been a guest lector for Arizona State University’s School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture’s “Summer Internship” seminar (2010) and a presenter / moderator for the Young Architects’ presentations at the Western Mountain Region’s Conferences (20082011) She holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Louisiana Tech University (cum laude) and is a licensed professional in Arizona as well as a LEED accredited professional and Construction Document Technologist (CDT).

Matt holds Bachelor and Master degrees in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM) and serves on the Board of Trustees for the UWM Alumni Association. In 2008 he was honored with the Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD) Award from the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning. He currently serves on the AIA Chicago Board of Directors and the AIA National Young Architects Forum (YAF) Advisory Committee. In 2011 he was appointed by the AIA National President to Chair the AIA National Membership Marketing Task Force focusing on engaging young, emerging professional members. Matt is the founder of the AIA Chicago Bridge mentoring program and the AIA Illinois Council for Emerging Professionals. Matt also advises PechaKucha Night Chicago (PKN) by recommending emerging young Architects to share their ideas and work. He is frequently invited to speak about architecture and design at local, state and national conferences. Matt was recognized for his leadership with the 2011 Building Design + Construction 40 Under 40 award.

Joe has been actively involved in AIA member groups and initiatives for more than twelve years, serving in a variety of leadership positions at the local, state, and regional levels. He will serve as the 2012 AIA Iowa Director of Public Relations and the Young Architects Forum Public Relations Advisor. In 2010 Joe promoted the addition of a large subsection of the AIA Miami website redesign to Emerging Professionals. Joe has also held leadership positions with the AIA National Associates Committee. Joe received his Bachelor of Architecture from Iowa State University. He holds an NCARB certificate and is currently licensed in Illinois and Florida.

As a project architect with HOK in St. Louis, Jason is currently working on the modernization of the Byron G. Rogers Federal office building with the United States General Services Administration in Denver, Colorado. Jason strongly believes in strengthening mentorship in the profession and strives to develop this need in everything he does from his day to day work with his project team, his involvement in his local AIA chapter all the way up through his position on the National YAF Advisory Committee.

Deepika Padam, AIA, LEED AP is a Senior Designer/Project Manager with Heller Manus Architects at San Francisco. She has served as the AIA Las Vegas President, AIA Nevada Executive Board Member, and USGBC Nevada President. Deepika is the current Communications Advisor for AIA National YAF, serving as the Chief Editor for YAF Connection and Young Architects Award Book. Her writing has been published in local and national journals and she has been recognized with awards for service to the profession.

Nathan Stolarz, AIA is a Project Architect with Prellwitz Chilinski Associates in Cambridge, MA. He has served as an Associate Director for AIANH, Director of YAF in New Hampshire and currently is the IDP State Coordinator for New Hampshire. Nathan recieved his Bachelor of Architecture from Wentworth Institute of Technology and is attending CCA in San Francisco this fall for his Master of Architecture.

Josh Flowers, AIA, LEED AP is the 2012 President of AIA Memphis and the YAF Regional Liaison for the Gulf States Region. A registered architect and licensed attorney, Josh is General Counsel of Hnedak Bobo Group in Memphis, Tennessee. Josh received Bachelor of Architecture and Juris Doctor Degrees from the University of Tennessee where he served as editor of the Tennessee Law Review. He is a national speaker and writer on legal issues related to architectural practice.

Bonnie Sen, AIA, LEED AP is an architect at Gensler in Washington, DC. Originally from India, she grew up moving around the United States, and believes this is the reason she has permanent wanderlust. She has previously served in the editorial sub-committee for AIA National Associates Committee's newsletter, AssociateNews.

This dedication is reflected by his work for both non-profit and for-profit clients, while maintaining a deep commitment to the AIA Minnesota chapter and other community organizations.

Tim’s work has always been filled with a deep sense of civic responsibility. He has brought his architectural knowledge to better the community organizations in which he has been involved by leading the design of the National Teachers College of Somalia in Garoowe. With County funding, Tim has also spearheaded design to renovate Youthlink’s existing structure, which originally began from a 2008 Search for Shelter Charette. He has been praised for his leadership, advocacy, and connection with clients, colleagues and community members. Tim’s design work, civic responsibility, and advocacy roles show him to be an exemplary public servant and architect. He has recognized the importance to further nurture his own leadership skills and has become a strong advocate for the architectural profession.

Dow Corporation Lobby Addition - Midland, MI, 2008

Project Designer The Dow 1790 project consists of visitors' center pavilion addition to an existing office building on the Dow corporate campus in Midland, Michigan. The addition also serves as the primary entry point for visitors into the industrial portion of the campus. It also serves as the prime location for press conferences, governmental gatherings, visiting dignitary receptions and public visits. The addition is defined by a transparent volume addition with a continuous sunshade, a brick mass that defines the entry while screening rooftop mechanical units and a courtyard. The transparent lobby volume is a flexible space that can be reconfigured for a variety of events. The display wall near the reception desk is used to showcase artifacts and the 100 year history of the Dow Company.

The Marquette Hotel Entry Renovation - Minneapolis, MN, 2008

Lead Designer The Marquette Hotel Entry Renovation solves issues of image, visibility, shelter and entry in a manner that is consistent with the language of this historically significant building. The hotel is located in the IDS Center, a large scale mixed-use urban development designed by Philip Johnson. The program elements for the project consist of new steel and glass entrance canopies, a new revolving door with vestibule, a new colored concrete walkway with snow melt system, signage, and a custom designed bench. The canopies consist simply of glass and steel. Pipe hangers suspended from wide flange and double channel beams support the grid of steel and glass. The wide flange beams are painted a dark bronze to blend with the exterior of the IDS building and make the canopy plane appear to float. 1

AIA Minnesota Housing Advocacy Committee - Search for Shelter Charettes, 1999-2011

Co-organizer/Team leader The AIA Minnesota Housing Advocacy Committee addresses the issues of affordable housing and homelessness. The committee works to keep these issues in front of decision makers, policy makers and the general public by organizing a variety of activities each year. Since 1987, the Search for Shelter Charette organized by the AIA MN Housing Advocacy Committee, has given design assistance to non-profits who otherwise would not be able to afford it. Although the design charette remains the most significant event that the committee sponsors, it has also worked to address the issues of homelessness and affordable housing in a variety of ways. Volunteers have organized design competitions, awarded scholarships, worked construction, toured emergency shelters, presented at the AIA convention and served as resources to university classes.

YouthLink Youth Opportunity Center - Minneapolis, MN, 2011

Lead Designer The Youth Opportunity Center at YouthLink offers an â&#x20AC;&#x153;Opportunity Centerâ&#x20AC;? approach for homeless, precariously housed, and marginalized youth between the ages of 14-21 in the Minneapolis metro area. The one stop network of services includes a welcome center, health clinic, education and employment center, crisis stabilization center, dining area, media center, housing support, library, conference center, administration space, clothing bank, food shelf, computer labs, laundry facilities, restrooms with showers, art studio, youth art gallery, performance space, and a daycare. The process of designing the project began during the 2008 AIA Search for Shelter volunteer design charette. As a result of this volunteer effort, funding was granted by Hennepin County to further the design and ultimately fund the construction.

Brian Cavanaugh, AIA BIO Over Brian Cavanaugh’s 16 year career, he has demonstrated a unique commitment to the practice of architecture and playing a critical leadership role in his community. His record of design excellence, his contributions to academic and non-profit institutions, and his positions on municipal boards, all speak to a career built on a deeply held belief in the value of the architecture profession and its potential to serve the public good. The work Brian has been associated with has won numerous design awards – including local, state, and national design awards – and has been published throughout the world and exhibited at such institutions as the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Van Alen Institute in New York, and the Heinz Architectural Center in Pittsburgh. Rainbow Apartments - Los Angeles, CA, 2006

Project Director Situated in the area of downtown Los Angeles known as Skid Row - one of the largest homeless populations in the country - the project examines the role of creating a transitional space within an extreme socioeconomic and urban context. A dense 6-story building, the Rainbow Apartments offers low-income housing comprised of 89 efficiency units along with a series of communal spaces such as a dining area, communal kitchen, meeting rooms, outdoor gathering areas and laundry facilities. In addition, the building incorporates offices and conference rooms on the ground floor to provide social services and workshops for tenants as part of their assistance and transition back into society.

Lubavitch Center of British Columbia Interior Refurbishment - Vancouver, BC, 2011

Architecture Building Culture - Principal-in-Charge The Lubavitch Center of British Columbia (the Center) embraces a philosophy of study, meditation, and social outreach that combines rigorous academics with proactive community involvement. They moved into their new home at the corner of West 41 st Ave & Oak Street, Vancouver, BC, in 1999. The Center occupies the first 3 stories and basement level of a 5-story infill office/commercial building that gives very little clue as to the rich cultural activity within. Two key areas remained as ‘shell and core’ – the main level reception and meeting areas, and the mikveh. This project completes these critical programmatic areas and reestablishes the architectural character of the Center, and heightens the experience of its community members.

Patent 326 - Wellington, New Zealand, 2009

Project Architect (while working with Warren and Mahoney) Patent 326 comprises three buildings of exceptional design with flexibility in mind. The largest building, Semaphore, contains seven loggia and 15 dual level apartments as well as eight penthouses. The building along the western edge of the site Helmsman will border Cog Park and accommodates one single, two dual level apartments and four townhouses. The third building, Navigator, will contain six townhouses and will be parallel to Evans Bay Parade. Rather than being right on the street edge, it will be set back with private courtyards, ensuring a feeling of open space - a softer street edge in keeping with the character of the area. Each of the buildings has been designed to blend with its natural surroundings. Intelligent choice of materials and a focus on variation and form ensure that Patent 326 effortlessly harmonizes with its environment.

MoMA QNS. - Long Island City, NY, 2002

Project Director The project is an examination of the museum's context within a transitional middle landscape, a condition between the urban and suburban which has neither the traditional identity of the urban center or suburban landscape. Importantly, they exist, almost pathologically, as a necessary and essential zone: a place of exchange. MoMA QNS's context is never fully formed but is instead in a permanent state of flux. This propelling condition constitutes an important context for contemporary culture, art, and understanding. As a result, the factory's original light blue color, which had a strong recognition value in an otherwise unremarkable context, was not simply maintained but was instead intensified, creating an amalgam at once familiar and unfamiliar. Coupled with the size and scale of the building, the Museum's presence, simultaneously iconic and abstract, could create a complex series of visual relationships within the context's overwhelming heterogeneity.

Evans, AIA BIO In a relatively short time, Jim has joined an elite group of Texas architects who demonstrate nationally recognized design excellence with a fundamental commitment to environmental stewardship. This vanguard is epitomized by Mr. Evans’ outstanding professional achievements with several Houston practices, most importantly his own firm, Collaborative Designworks, and recently in the prescient potential of the remarkable and innovative Hometta online project, which he co-founded.

Recently, Collaborative Designworks has begun to take on larger projects and in a widening geographical area - including retail and restaurant projects, a 120,000 SF training center, as well as homes on the lakeshore of New Orleans and in the hills of West Virginia. With the AIA in Houston, Jim is looking forward to continuing his committee involvement and serving on the board through 2014. Jim has led by example. He has made sure his career started early and started strong. In a difficult economy he has shown initiative by creating work when needed and seeing it to success; and he has encouraged the incorporation of his ideals and these achievements in his contemporaries’ careers. Jim’s approach to architecture has also pushed the boundaries of architect-as-developer, creating significant projects in this role. The 505 - Houston, TX, 2006

Architect â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Collaborative Designworks The 505 is a 4-Unit townhouse development located near Houstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rejuvenated downtown. The Architect spearheaded the project as an experimental design exercise that works within the economic and market constraints of a speculative housing development. The property is eligible for 5-Units, but only 4 were built in order to leave space for yards and to reduce the amount of shared walls. Various sustainable strategies were implemented, giving the project an environmentally responsible footprint. The unique form is a simple box that has been activated by a single shift made in plan. This shift allows for more windows in the envelope underneath overhangs that are oriented North/South rather than across to the adjacent units. The rotation in plan creates opportunities for flexible yet defined internal volumes that play dual roles.

Hyde Park Double - Houston, TX, 2010

Architect â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Collaborative Designworks The Hyde Park Double presented a unique opportunity to design two single family homes on adjacent lots within an established neighborhood. Surrounded by a variety of architectural styles and an eclectic cultural mix, it was crucial to compose the two buildings to compliment each other without losing their individuality. The houses share certain common elements and materials, but the spatial arrangement relates to the City in two distinctly different ways. The houses achieve a balance between natural light and privacy with secluded front yards and central courtyards. Front porches, common in this neighborhood, are moved to the 2nd floor but maintain their public role along the street-front.

Lantern Bend P.O.B. - Houston, TX, 2003

Architect - Kirksey The Lantern Bend Professional Office Building was designed to meet the unique requirements of a rapidly expanding cardiology practice. The design intentionally creates a collegial atmosphere with outdoor walkways and courtyards to foster communication and chance meetings among professionals throughout the workday. In the client’s own words: “What was astonishing was the way our clinic matured from an initial plan enclosed in a rectangular configuration to a beautiful and unique use of space conforming to daily workflow, the nature of the property, and our position within a larger building structure.” Exam Pods are located on the north side of building allowing access to natural light and exterior views. Natural light enters the project primarily from the North at the intersections of the volumes as well as through artificially and naturally shaded fenestration in the courtyard area.

Architect â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Collaborative Designworks Amidst an endless expanse of spiky refineries, the new office building addition for OILTANKING Texas City announces itself as a small yet significant presence. The additionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s footprint strategically wraps the older buildings, creating outdoor courtyard spaces between the wings while simultaneously providing the facility with a new architectural identity. Left in its natural state, the concrete finish takes on the traits and texture of the sand slab on which it was poured. The depth of the folded concrete surface provides shading and added strength on the outside and is experienced inside through custom fitted millwork. The robust and raw quality of this undulating skin alludes to the wrapped design scheme and fluid flow of traffic around the building while appearing visually balanced within the surrounding industrial context.

School, Church & Residence - Urabumba, Peru, 2012

Lead Architect Located in the Sacred Valley on the way to Machu Pichu. A modern indigenous Inca-like style of architecture was developed using confined masonry construction with limited long spans and fenestrations for seismic safety. The buildings were designed and engineered to be efficient, safe and beautiful while accommodating a very ambitious program on a small site. The New Life Church sanctuary is designed to accommodate 500 people. An outdoor, year around, covered pavilion expands the useable space for the school. The roof lines reflect the shape of the surrounding mountains and the simple floor plan, trapezoidal windows, sloping buttresses, rock veneer and shape of the buildings acknowledge ideas originated by the indigenous Inca master builders.

Design Architect The B.W. Crain Memorial Conference Center was designed as a center piece, focal point and gathering spot for people of all ages in the Pine forests of East Texas on Camp Gilmont. Built in memory of the well known Texas architect, the Conference Center is made available to many community and educational functions, providing several assembly areas and breakout meeting rooms. This state-of-the-art conference facility is environmentally sustainable and site sensitive. The project was completed in 2010 with Missionary Tech Team as the architectural firm of record. The transparent access to the outside elevates the spirit through a wrap around deck, skylights providing interior views to the tree tops, sky and lake, and the use of natural and indigenous materials.

C.S. Lewis Study Center - Oxford England, 1998

Search for Shelter Charettes - Designer The original home of the author of the Narnia Series of books was remodeled and a section converted to a Study Center. The architect integrated the new portion with the original structure of the “Kilns,” home of the famous author C.S. Lewis. The project was completed for the C.S. Lewis Foundation. Intensive summer sessions use the Study Center and library, and participants live in the “Kilns.” During the remainder of the year visiting scholars are housed.

Martin Luther King Jr Memorial International Design Award Finalist: short listed as cash price winners, chosen from over 1900 entires submitted from 52 countries {partnered with J. C. Nicholson}. National monument for the mall in Washington DC to celebrate Martin Luther King and the accomplishments of the Civil Rights movement. Memorial design highlights Dr Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have been to the mountain,â&#x20AC;? quote and words from his speeches are engraved on the glass mountain. The axis through the mountain is aligned with the presidential memorials nearby and across the Potomac. Project illustrates the transforming effect the profession of architecture can have in visually expressing unquantifiable feelings for people in all walks-of-life.

MICHAEL HALFLANTS, AIA BIO Michael Halflants is a principal of Halflants + Pichette Architects in Sarasota and a tenured professor at the University of South Florida. In 1998, Michael earned his graduate degree at the University of Florida, where he was awarded the gold medal, the school’s highest design honor. Upon graduation, he was first employed as a project designer with the Polshek Partnership in New York. In that capacity, he drew designs for theaters and offices in Manhattan and for the Kansas University Spencer Museum. Through teaching, Michael hopes to contribute to the next generation. He believes students benefit from interacting with an instructor actively engaged in the profession and he strives to build and maintain deliberately parallel and mutually reinforcing creative activities and educational responsibilities. Bay View Residence, 2012

Halflants + Pichette, Principal The residence is the firmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first design-build project. On the bay side, the roof extends 30 feet beyond the conditioned enclosure. The large overhanging plane folds down to become a wing wall, shielding a distant powerplant from view. On the other side, the roof is supported by exposed concrete columns aligned with the existing dock. The concrete columns, the roof, and the wing wall all taper towards the view. Three linear cuts provide framed views of the sky and reinforce the orientation toward the Bay. All of the private spaces are arranged around the double height volume of the living and dining room.

Principal, Halflants + Pichette On the most visible corner, the uppermost enclosure of the penthouse terrace captures the sky and becomes a visual anchor facing Main Street. On the same corner, the units are laid out with a two story living space. These 2 story volumes stagger locations to interlock with the units above and below. Six townhouses line the parking garage along the east elevation to mediate the scale of the project with the adjacent residential neighborhood. The project is entirely designed to be built of concrete, glass, and terracotta.

Principal, Halflants + Pichette With generous overhangs, shaded terraces, operable systems, and solar cells, the house embraces Sarasotaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s subtropical latitude as it opens to the rear courtyard. The tall, thin and narrow main house is oriented East to West. On the entire length of the house, the roof overhangs 16 feet shading the yard and creating a cooler microclimate around the pool. The space under the overhanging roof serves as a verandah mediating the climate. The overhang is created by light steel trusses from which a balcony is suspended. A continuous clerestory runs between the trusses. Entry is through a smaller court recessed in the south elevation. The entry court is shaded by translucent photovoltaic panels.

Principal, Halflants + Pichette The house is located at the mouth of a river as it opens to Sarasota Bay. Instead of fronting other residential properties across the narrow creek, the house is rotated to look to the bay. The angle of the houseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rotation is aligned with the summer solstice. A roof terrace over the entire house stair steps to catch long views. The stair stepping roof gives additional height to the living room below.

Michael J. Hanrahan, AIA BIO Michael J. Hanrahan, AIA has been a key member of Clarke Caton Hintz for over fifteen years. Licensed in 2002, he immediately earned the title of Associate. Michael was promoted to Senior Associate in 2005 and ultimately elevated to Associate Partner in 2010. Michael has served as lead designer and project manager for many of the firms notable and award winning projects. He has worked on projects of varying scale and type across multiple market sectors. Michael also has extensive experience in historic preservation and the adaptive re-use of existing buildings. He is particularly adept at taking practical advantage of the existing character of historic spaces.

Civic Buildings& Historic Preservation - Flemington, NY, 1999 - 2009

Project Architect/ Project Manager, Historic Hunterdon County Courthouse, Hunterdon County Administration Building Hunterdon County is one of the fastest growing counties in the country. As the population increases, so does the need for government services. Beginning with a long range facilities master plan, Michael oversaw all aspects of this multiyear,multi-phase construction project. Work included the renovation of the HunterdonCounty Administration Building; the restoration of the Historic Hunterdon County Courthouse;the adaptive re-use of the former Hunterdon County Jail; the renovation of the Hall of Records; and the restoration of the Samuel J. Southard Building. The restoration of the Historic Hunterdon County Courthouse garnered a New Jersey State Historic Preservation Award.

Campbell’s Field - Camden, NJ, 2001 Project Coordinator

Campbell’s Field is a new 6,500 seat minor league ballpark located in Camden, NJ. It is key component to the revitalization of the City’s waterfront. The exposed steel and brick vocabulary is meant to compliment the neighboring industrial buildings while being reminiscent of ballparks of yesteryear. The ballpark was named to the list of 150 best buildings created by AIA New Jersey to celebrate their sesquicentennial.

Project Manager/ Project Architect 200 Elm Drive is the adaptive reuse of the former Princeton University Boilerhouse as new administrative office space. The design strike an interesting dialog between the rich industrial history of the building with new modern interiors. The restored exterior provides an attractive collegiate gothic building welcoming visitors at one of the main entrance points to the campus.

Cedar Rapids Federal Courthouse - Cedar Rapids, IA, 2008-Present

Project Architect - Courtrooms, Judgesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Chambers, Prisoner/cell/secure areas The new eight-story 290,000 s.f. Federal Courthouse is currently under construction with completion slated for fall 2012. Replacing the existing, outdated courthouse,the new courthouse will house courtrooms and associated jury facilities, judges' chambers, court offices and tenant areas for other government agencies. The project, under planning and design since 2003, was on semi-permanent hold until the floods of 2008 pushed it to the top of the priority list when the existing courthouse was flooded and rendered unusable. The first major project to start construction after the floods, the Courthouse stands as a symbol of Cedar Rapidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rejuvenation.

Project Architect / Project Design- Arena A 430,000 s.f. Convention Center complex identified as a key element in the Cedar Rapids downtown revitalization strategy after the flood of 2008. It will play an important role in stimulating economic activity throughout the downtown and city. The complex will anchor the north end of the downtown and provide an architectural conclusion to the Art, Culture and Entertainment district. This new convention complex will be the home of a new arena football team, along with many other performance venues. The new convention hall will bring in revenue to help support the downtown businesses.

Carnegie-Stout Public Library - Dubuque, IA, 2007-2010

Project Manager / Project Design This project involves the renovation of a 50,000 square foot public library consisting of an original building constructed in 1901 and a 1984 addition that, while dramatically increasing the size of the library, effectively created two separate halves, each with its own architectural style and personality, and with very little connection between the two. The design team was presented with the challenge of unifying these two disparate halves as part of a building-wide reorganization and remodeling, while also embracing the historic original portion of the building for public use. Rather than a strict historic restoration, which would limit the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s functionality, there novation honors the historic nature of the building, restoring certain key components,while re-purposing others for modern use.

Interns were informed about the transition from ARE versions 3.1 to 4.0, so they would not need to retake previously passed tests. The proposed IDP version 2.0 was reviewed, with comments provided to NCARB. The new electronic verification system to be used by interns to document IDP was tested and critiqued. A research effort, a member survey and discussion took place, into the myriad of “intern” titling rules of NCARB’s 54 member boards. City of Cedar Rapids, Master Planning Post Flood of 2008 - Summer of 2010

Project Manager / Project Design The purpose of the open houses was to engage the public in the process of rebuilding downtown City Services post flood. We obtained public opinions from their examination of informational boards, asking questions at open houses and then finally providing input on each building and public space affected in the flood. The open houses helped to guide the most effective use of community facilities to meet the needs of the city today and for future generations. This information was given to the City Council for guidance on four points; 1) Returning to existing buildings as they were at the time of the flood, 2) Return to existing buildings as they were at the time of the flood, with upgrades, 3) Consider new buildings, alternate locations, and the possibility of co-location, and 4)Reoccupy another existing building, which was added as a result of participant feedback.

Thomas Jacobs, AIA BIO Thomas Jacobs has been contributing to our built environment throughout his 16-year career in ways that define leadership for our next generation of Architects. He has been an integral part in the creation of some of the best buildings in Chicago and beyond. As Principal and Project Architect with Krueck + Sexton, Tom’s success is rooted in his ability to contribute to teams and partnerships through clear communication, critical thinking, and creativity. As a leader in the truest sense of the word, Tom rigorously challenges assumptions in pursuit of prudent approaches, and charismatically brings out the best of a process, of a building, and most importantly, of all people involved.

After receiving his Diploma of Architecture from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Switzerland, Tom moved to the United States to start his career with Krueck + Sexton Architects. At this time, he conceived some of the hallmark design elements in the Herman Miller Showroom in Chicago. Following that project, he returned to Switzerland to work with Herzog & de Meuron (1999-2002) where he was on the project teams for the Jack S. Blanton Museum in Austin, Texas and the New de Young Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. An intensely formative period in Tom’s early career, Tom was Project Architect for the 10-story twisting education and observation tower. He established the California office of H&deM in San Francisco in late 2000. Then, in 2002 he returned to Krueck + Sexton as the first Associate Principal. In 2010 Tom was made the first Principal of Krueck + Sexton, and is the designated future leader for the firm. Along with his work at Krueck + Sexton, Tom is an advocate for community development and planning as an active member of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s Citizen Advisory Committee, helping to implement Chicago’s GOTO 2040 Plan. He also serves as chair of the Riverside Sustainability Council, an organization he founded in 2008. In addition, Tom writes a monthly column for the Riverside Landmark on the challenges and opportunities of sustainability as a guiding principle.

Design Architect As Design Architect on the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies,working with Ron Krueck, FAIA and Mark Sexton, FAIA in a three part design team, Tom helped to redefine the 19th Century land marked Historic Michigan Avenue streetwall by adding a decidedly 21st century building. The largest built building in Tomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s portfolio to date, Spertus is a 145,000 square-foot mixed-use building. Its diversity of program elements allowed for spatial opportunities which opened up this vertical campus to bring light deep into the infill property from a three-story sky lit atrium. The spatial exploration, along with the openness & materiality and complicated jewel-like faĂ§ade make Spertus one of a few buildings which define 21st century Chicago architecture.

The Crown Fountain - Millenium Park, Chicago, IL, 2004

Project Architect / Project Design- Arena The Crown Fountain was a technical achievement whose success is due to many participants. Together with Mark Sexton, FAIA, Tom led a team of specialty consultants, engineers, and fabricators through a trial-and-error process which led to the successful integration of otherwise disparate materials & technologies. Charting new territories, this project was a project of learning on many levels. Krueck + Sexton did not conceive of the design idea, but the roles were reversed. Instead they were responsible for making someone elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concept flourish. Creating a successful project for another artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision required a completely different set of skills and type of teamwork. It required a perspective that embraced planned failure through mock-ups. It was a process characterized by humbleness that Tom embraced.

1100 First Street - Washington, DC, 2009

Project Architect With 1100 First Street, Tom’s Project Architect role was expanded as he led the design effort for this out-of-town speculative office building. Tom’s collaboration with Gensler, the Architect-of-Record, and Tishman Speyer, the developer/client, defined his role on the most basic level. He was also responsible for developing a unitized curtain wall with a dynamic quality to it, allowing for light to reflect deep into an entry courtyard. Success of this project was measured on very different terms from the other projects in Tom’s portfolio, with a primary client objective being to work within the extremely tight margins of developer economics and marketability. Yet, the design aspirations did not yield. With Tom’s design guidance and communication, 1100 First Street has achieved the highest quality and details on a tight and competitive budget.

The Chicago Children’s Museum - Chicago, IL, 2016

Project Architect As Project Architect on the Chicago Children’s Museum in Grant Park, Tom helped to shepherd a process of community review & awareness along with design revisions to meet the often contradictory objectives of the mayor’s office, the local residents and the Museum. The design for the new Chicago Children’s Museum engages the children in the space, the structure, and the very earth of their city in a building that allows the entire project footprint to remain park land. The overarching dedication to the true Client of this building -the children- is an effort that Tom led with enthusiasm and vision. Making certain that the museum kept its design integrity throughout a contentious public process, and constantly pushing the design to make it better for the children: ensuring expansive light and views, increasing park space, and providing for a unique experience that would engage the children through all their senses. The Chicago Children’s Museum is an example of the leadership and vision that Tom has fostered in his young career.

As a member of the American Institute of Architects and the U.S. Green building council, Hao stays involved in the architecture community and is constantly looking for new perspectives to bring to his work. He has recently spoken about his work with PNC Bank at the Greenbuild Conference in Toronto. He is also involved with the Council for Tall Buildings and the Urban Land Institute. Hao has recently been selected to be part of Gensler University, which is a select group of professionals identified by the company’s board to look at the specific challenge of sustainability, and the crafting of cities and urban design. He has also been nominated and participated in a year-long ‘Next Generation’ leadership group that looks at Gensler’s future business development. Hao's willingness to take on new challenges, along with his highly developed collaboration skills, have already made him an indispensible member of the Gensler team.

Shanghai Tower - Shanghai, China, Completion 2014

Project Designer, Gensler Shanghai Tower is organized as nine cylindrical buildings stacked one atop another. The inner layer of the double-skin façade encloses the stacked buildings, while a triangular exterior layer creates the second skin, or building envelope, which gently rotates as it rises. The spaces between the two façade layers create nine atrium sky gardens. With sky gardens lining the tower’s perimeter, Shanghai Tower is literally wrapped in public spaces. Both interior and exterior skins are transparent, establishing a visual connection between the tower’s interiors and Shanghai’s urban fabric. On the ground level, retail and event spaces, in tandem with abundant entrances on the site, further the physical and visual connections between the tower and the city.

Senior Designer, Keating/Khang Architects Situated along the axis of the great Chicago plazas where artists such as Chagall, Miro, and Calder placed their monuments, this building at the corner of Dearborn and Madison follows in that same tradition. By setting the building back from Dearborn Street, an intimate urban space is framed by the iconographic Inland Steel Building. The simplicity and efficiency of the typical office floor is accentuated at the corners where subtle manipulations in the curtainwall allow for the building to shift away from the standard mold. Rooted at its base that pays homage to the adjacent classical Chicago buildings in both material and architecture, a window to the city and lake beyond tops off the building as the glass drifts toward the sky.

Three PNC Plaza - Pittsburgh, PA, 2005

Design Director, Gensler Located at the intersection of the major commercial and cultural corridors of Fifth and Liberty Avenues, the Three PNC Plaza project seeks to reinvigorate the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. The building incorporates office, hotel and residential condominium programs at the tower levels. While the building is highly visible from various view corridors, it also resides within the context of its immediate block and tries to be a good neighbor to the adjacent buildings. The building strives to achieve timelessness through its simplicity of form and planning and aspires to stand as a new landmark within the city.

He has designed many exciting projects, but two I have worked on with him have been very special experiences for me. One is the PNC office building in Washington, D.C. It is hard to do a great design in D.C., but Hao created a great LEED Platinum building with a fantastic lobby diagonally across the street from the old executive office building. The second project is planned to be a forty-story plus high rise in Pittsburg, also for PNC. The brief for the building is to be the most sustainable building in the United States. With axial views to the Monument, the building is oriented toward this remarkable southern exposure. In a city of monuments, the team set out to design a building that is of its context, is timeless at its style, and is precise in its detailing. The building also aspires to establish a new benchmark in the city by achieving LEED Platinum status.

Stuart Magruder, AIA BIO Stuart's aesthetic tends toward California minimalism. Simplicity is favored over complexity; an understated detail is preferred over a flashy one. Believing that the best works of architecture push one idea through the entire project, editing is a key part of his process. A crucial part of the design process is avoiding the temptation to over-design.

Due to the scale and scope of his clients, Stuart is currently focused on figuring out how to use industry standard details without accepting the resulting aesthetic: how to use a product, such as a nail-on window, in the standard way without it appearing standard. The challenge is to design refinements to the standard that maintain its speed of installation and affordability. Stuart has found that it is much harder to do minimalism on smaller scale projects with limited budgets: the material options are fewer. So working and transforming what industry has to offer is key to creating meaningful work. With close to a decade of practice behind him, Stuart has a deep conviction that architects must be engaged in the political process. Local, state, and national leaders make the rules that architects play by; if architects do not participate with the elected leaders in that process, the quality of the built environment suffers and the satisfaction of being an architect diminishes. It is for this reason that he is involved in the AIA.

Culver City Hill House - II, 2011

Principal, Studio Nova A Architects, Inc. This project started with a bang - the bang of the backyard falling 80 feet down hill in amudslide. The owners wanted to turn the disaster - in which noone was hurt - into an opportunity to create a sustainable house for them and their growing family. The projectre-orients the siteby aligning the housealong the eastern sideof the flat lot. This creates an outdoor room set back from the hill and thus enjoyable. The house engages the hill by extending out over it. Built to last, the house is super insulated, generates enough electricity to feed itself and the grid, uses gray water for landscape irrigation, grows three green roofs, and is clad in materials that do not require finishes.

Culver City House - Culver City, CA, 2005

Principal, Studio Nova A Architects, Inc. This renovation and addition project took a 900 square foot, 1920’s ‘Craftsmanesque’ house - in a very challenged state - and brought it back to life. We added 600sf to the house and built a 500 sf garage/studio/office, all without destroying the integrity of the existing house. From the street, the new is barely visible,allowing the spruced up original to shine. Only once you enter into the dinning room or stroll down the driveway does the new make itself known. Views from within the home focus on the greenscape, creating an open and private feel. The home is super insulated, and utilizes cross ventilation to minimize the need for mechanical heating and cooling.

Inglewood Low Income Clinic - Inglewood, CA, 2011

Principal, Studio Nova A Architects, Inc. This small medical office building for a doctor's low-income clinic practice,had a small budget as well. Set on a tight corner lot in a tough but upcoming section of town,this project brings a level of design intent rare for the neighborhood. The project needed to be open yet private and safe yet welcoming. To accomplish this, large windows to the street are arranged in the public spaces(reception, hall,and clerical areas)while small and high openings are placed to provide natural light to the nursing staff and in the patient rooms (two with skylights). A high walled rear courtyard provides a calm space of light and air for the staff.

Eco House Competition, 2006

Principal, Studio Nova A Architects, Inc. The goal of this AIA competition was to integrate high design with high sustainability. The Studio's scheme answered the call with a concrete structure cantilevered out of the ground. All the energy needed for the structure is produced on site (photovoltaic and thermal solar panels, and geothermal heating / cooling). A crow's nest sits atop the structure, offering a view space. The resident constantly traverses from interior to exterior as a part of the daily use of the structure helping to heighten the ecologist's connection to the surroundings.

Adam has had opportunity to experience different roles as an architect. He started his career working in the traditional role of a project architect, providing leadership throughout all aspects of a building project throughout the planning, design, construction documents, and construction process. He also has provided leadership in non-traditional roles as an architect. He has served as a program manager for a variety of healthcare systems and public school systems. In this role, he has led clients through budgeting, planning, building standards development, Design-Build Criteria development, and even the interviewing and hiring of design and construction professionals. Adam served as the AIA National Young Architects Forum (YAF) Chair in 2011, served four years as the YAF Ohio Valley Regional Liaison, and as the YAF Advisory Committee (AdCom) Vice Chair in 2010, he served as chair of the YAF AdCom Selection Committee and the YAF Regional Liaison Selection committee, and is a member of the AIA Indianapolis YAF. He believes in the power of mentoring and has trained more than 100 other mentors at the 2007 AIA National convention, “Mentoring Essentials for IDP Supervisors and Mentors.” While on the AdCom, he was instrumental in the creation of the YAF/COF Mentoring Series Webinars, reaching out to more than 300 members.

AIA Young Architects Forum 2011 Chair – YAF Advisory Committee

Adam identified the need for the YAF strategic plan to link to the AIA strategic plan and chaired the first YAF annual fall planning retreat. This was the first-ever YAF planning session framed in the context of the AIA’s strategic plan – via the Weave process – a process utilized by more than 30 components of the AIA. He was actively involved in establishing and developing the Council of Emerging Professionals, a subcommittee of the AIA National board. Under Adam’s leadership, the YAF quarterly newsletter, Connection, has taken on a new evermore professional appearance, the YAF initiated and awarded the second Annual IDEAS Competition, created the Young Architects Award Book and initiated the regional support and selection of the Young Architect Regional Directors (formerly named Regional Liaisons). YAF continues to grow its social media presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and the AIA KnowledgeNet.

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center - Danville, Kentucky

Program Manager - Stengell-Hill Architects The Ephaim McDowell Regional Medical Center is the main hospital for Ephraim McDowell Health Network, headquartered in Danville, Kentucky. The project was an 85,000sf addition and renovation, which impacted the Emergency Department, Patient Rooms and numerous support spaces within the existing hospital. As the Program Manger Adam served as the ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s representative and was involved in the Programming, Budgeting and initial space planning for the Project.

Board Member, Moderator Adam is currently an active board member of the Indiana Rural Health Association, a not-for-profit corporation developed for the purpose of improving the health of all Indiana citizens in rural settings and the largest Rural Health Association in the country. Adam has twice served as the chair of the Annual Conference committee. The Annual Conference is designed to provide health care leaders in rural/small communities of Indiana with networking and educational opportunities, as well as renewed motivation to tackle their challenging jobs. BIO Jon has consistently and enthusiastically contributed to improving the practice of architecture for young architects in Washington DC and beyond. He founded the Emerging Architects Committee of the Chapter, a highly successful outreach program for young members. Under his leadership, the committee has organized mentoring workshops, collaborated with other organizations for networking opportunities, and created a lecture series specifically targeted to the interests of Young Architects. As a result of his success, Jon was asked to serve as MidAtlantic Regional Liaison to the Young Architects Forum. In this capacity he collaborated with other components on a regional and national level through articles in newsletters, communication with chapters, and attendance at semiannual regional meetings where he spear-headed support for amending the bylaws to make the YAF Regional Liaison an official position on the Mid-Atlantic Board. Jon has also shown exceptional leadership on behalf of young architects on the AIA | DC Board of Directors. He has been the Board Secretary, Treasurer, and President-Elect. He is serving as the President of the chapter during the 2012 AIA National Convention in Washington, DC and has been an active committee chair and contributor to its organization and implementation. Project Architect - Bowie Gridley Architects The third high school in Arlington County to be renovated or replaced, Wakefield High School serves a student population of approximately 1,600 in addition to hosting community events. The 400,000 square foot building provides all new academic and athletic facilities, including two theatres, specialty science labs, a new media center, two gymnasiums and a natatorium complex. When completed, Wakefield High School will be the greenest school in Arlington County. The design includes rainwater harvesting for reuse in irrigation and toilets, as well as a large geothermal system used to heat and cool the building. Solar hot water tubes and photovoltaic panels sit on the roof, and a sophisticated daylighting system has been designed to reduce the need for electric lighting. This project is currently tracking for LEED NC 2.2 Gold Certification.

Project Architect/Project Manager - Chatelain Architects, p.c. Originally begun as a planning project, Asia Trail developed into new outdoor yards and indoor holding facilities for seven species of mammals and amphibians. While not attempting LEED certification, the National Zoo sought to be as environmentally-sensitive as possible to underscore its core mission of conservation. Buildings include solar hot water heating systems, green roofs, passive ventilation, and daylighting. Finishes along the visitor path include FSC-certified wood, natural bamboo, and cor-ten steel. The Zoo saw sustainability as part of the projectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission, and as such used the new complex as a tool to teach the visiting public about green design and how to be better stewards of the earth. The project received numerous awards including the 2006 AIA|DC Presidential Citation for Sustainable Design.

Founder, Moderator Facing a need in the local architecture community, Jonathan began to bring together interns and Young Architects to discuss issues important to those on the path to licensure. On the last Wednesday of ten months each year, the AIA|DC Mentoring Workshop meets at firms around the city and tackles issues such as Intern Development Program community service requirements, exam preparation, what to look for in a mentor, and how to apply for licensure with foreign education. Now in its fifth year, the Mentoring Workshop has served over 200 interns and has involved over 30 mentors, all on a volunteer basis. While there is no commitment required to participate, many interns do return regularly as the group has spawned the added benefits of cameraderie and networking among peers. This program was highlighted as a case study at the 2011 AIA Grassroots Conference.

Architecture Uncensored - Fall 2009-2011

AIA|DC Emerging Architects Committee Chair Recognizing the need for programs aimed at recently licensed architects in the Washington, DC area, “Architecture Uncensored” was created as a series of presentations exploring “life after the exam.” In 2009, three architects and an insurance specialist addressed the topics of setting up a practice, finding and holding clients, risk and liability. Presentations were kept informal - more storytelling and interaction than lecture or instruction - and purposely not focused on design. The response from the local emerging architects community was overwhelmingly positive, with more than fifty people attending the opening event and many signing up for the entire series. This program was a recipient of the College of Fellows Emerging Professionals Grant in 2010, funding equipment to create video podcasts of the presentations to be made available to all AIA members.

BRAD TOMECEK, AIA BIO Brad Tomecek, AIA believes that community involvement, education & outreach are integral with his passion for work. He has have been involved in and donated time to many non-profit organizations including the American Institute of Architects, Medicine Horse, Architects and Planners of Boulder, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, State of Colorado Technical Advisory Board, Feed Denver, and the Urban Farm. Brad has found that it is this integration with local efforts that connects him to the important issues of the local community and helps shape the future of Colorado.

He believes in creating a dialogue in the classroom, shaping how students participate in consciousness raising activities in the studio exploring new knowledge, building conceptual frameworks, and developing sustainable design strategies. Brad relishes the opportunity to help individuals refine their unique approach in the design world. Teaching for him is a sanctuary of unending optimism, exploration, and discussion that reinvigorates and influences his practice. Acting as a guest critic for other instructors allows Brad to participate in a broader cross-section of academic exploration. Through lectures he seeks to inspire others and rally against the status quo. Over the last eight years, one can reflect on Brad's work and see a thread of thoughtful building practices based in explorations of new system technologies. Structural insulated panels, modular off-site prefabrication, shipping containers, insulated concrete forms, and imported German prefabricated eco-panels have become part of the portfolio. Brad finds that these systems have the ability to save time while offering better energy performance and a reduction in waste that usually accompanies traditional building techniques. The reduced building time line can be a huge benefit in a region with challenging weather and especially useful for hard-to-reach sites with short building seasons. A 2011 AIA traveling scholarship award Brad received will allow him to further his research in this area with a trip to selected west coast projects and factories.

Project Architect This urban infill project juxtaposes a tall, slender curved circulation space against a rectangular living space. The tall curved metal wall was a result of bulk plane restrictions and the need to provide privacy from the public decks of the adjacent three-story triplex. This element becomes the focus of the residence both visually and experientially. It acts as sun catcher that brings light down through the house from morning until early afternoon. At night it becomes a glowing, welcoming sail for visitors.

Project Architect The project creates spatial experience from the fracture implied by splayed property lines. The resulting volumetric fissure of the building mass organizes the horizontal circulation and creates the space of the stair cavern. The fracture also serves as a connector between the two entries of the long narrow dwelling, thus remediating the challenging circulation issues of building from street to street with a sectional shift of almost 40â&#x20AC;˛. The unique spatial experience is punctuated by, and allows for, highly varied apprehension of form, light, and shadow.

CHESTER A. WIDOM, FAIA 2011 Chancellor LOS ANGELES Chester (Chet) A. Widom, FAIA, is the founding partner of WWCOT, a 180-person Santa Monica, California-based firm, experienced in a wide variety of architectural and interiors projects. The firm has offices in Santa Monica, Riverside, Palm Springs and Modesto, California, and Shanghai, China. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern California in 1962. Mr. Widom has been actively involved in the full-range of professional activities on the local, state, and national level including: Secretary, AIA Los Angeles; President, AIA/California Council; AIA President, and was elected to the AIA College of Fellows in 2007. In addition to the elected offices, Mr. Widom has lead and served on a wide variety of specific committees and task forces in serving the profession and the construction industry including and not limited to: National AIA/AGC (Associated General Contractors of America) Joint Conference; National AIA Special Education Task Force; National AIA Professional Excellence Commission; National AIA External Affairs Commission; National AIA Documents Futures Task Force; Architectural Record Magazine Advisory Committee; National Architectural Accreditation Board Team; California and American Architectural Foundation. While Institute president Mr. Widom received honors from the Japan Institute of Architects, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Federación de Colegios de Arquitectos de la Republica Mexicana. Mr. Widom has been a guest lecturer at Harvard, Yale, University of Calgary, Cal Poly Pomona, and UCLA, and is currently teaching “Introduction to Architecture Studies” at USC. He has been published in a variety of professional and industry journals. In addition to his academic engagements, Mr. Widom has been a featured speaker before a variety of professional organizations. In 1990, Mr. Widom was elected to the College of Fellows, which is one of the highest honors the profession bestows on its colleagues. He has been elected Secretary of the College and will serve on the Executive Committee in 2008 and 2009. In May 1996, Mr. Widom was selected as the Distinguished Alumni of the USC School of Architecture, becoming only the fifteenth person to receive this prestigious honor. Chet also has a long history of civic and philanthropic dedication. In June of 1997, Mr. Widom was one of fifteen citizens elected as Commissioner of The Los Angeles Charter Reform Commission, representing the City of Los Angeles 6 th Council District with a constituency of over 250,000 people. He served as Vice President of the Commission for two years and as the only architect, took a leadership role in the writing of a new charter (constitution), for the City. Mr. Widom has been responsible for leading design, management, and technical practice programs that have fostered WWCOT’s ability to serve a wide variety of public and private sector clients on a national and international basis.

Norman Koonce’s fervor for joining others to help advance the architecture profession became a reality in 1961 when he became a founding partner of a Louisiana architecture firm. That commitment, he believes, was formally acknowledged by his elevation to the AIA College of Fellows in 1988. One year later, Koonce was invited to become the President and CEO of the American Architectural Foundation. His leadership there for ten years resulted in a 500% increase in revenues, expanding programs such as the Mayor’s Institute on City Design, Accent on Architecture, exhibitions, K-12 education, and a restored Octagon House. Following that, Koonce was selected as the AIA EVP/CEO, a position he held for seven years, solving the Institute’s critical financial condition, achieving significant increases in the Institute’s annual budget and reserves, focusing on AIA Component relationships, and implementing annual strategic planning. After retiring at the end of 2005, Koonce remained active as national cochair of the AIA150 capital campaign. He now focuses on the College of Fellows Executive Committee, seeking a greater understanding of the power of architecture to elevate and enrich the human experience through research. Awards include the 1998 Edward C. Kemper Award, 2000 AIA Louisiana Medal of Honor, 2001 Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Northwestern State University, 2004 Leslie N. Boney Spirit of Fellowship Award, and the LSU College of Art & Design Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005. Norman and his wife, Sue (honorary AIA), are blessed with four daughters and sons-in-law, 12 grandchildren, one granddaughter-in-law, two grandsons-in-law, and two great granddaughters. Of course, they are all beautiful and smart!

William Stanley, III is a fourth generation Atlantan. He was educated at the Georgia Institute of Technology and in 1972 became the first black graduate of its College of Architecture. Upon graduating, Bill continued his internships in New York City and Detroit, Michigan. While interning with Welton Becket Associates and John Portman Associates, he was Senior Designer and Project Manager for several national and international projects. In 1975 he became the youngest African American ever to receive an architectural registration in the South. Bill began his private architectural practice in 1977 with his wife Ivenue LoveStanley, FAIA; over the past 33 years the firm has grown to become one of the largest African-American practices in the country concentrating in architecture, planning, program management, and interior design throughout the U.S. and abroad. Bill is currently registered in 5 southern states. He has lectured, served as a studio critic, jury member, and professional critic for numerous schools across the country, Europe, and Africa; his firm was selected as one of 7 alumni to present the Centennial Lecture at the College of Architecture at GA Tech. Bill is a GSA peer and has been a juror on its Design Excellence Program. Bill is the principal in charge of business development and design and has been responsible for the firm’s 28 awards including: the Agricultural Sciences Building at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College; Lyke House – The Catholic Center at Atlanta University Center; Centennial Place Elementary School; Ebenezer Baptist Church; Dobbs Plaza; Reynolds Cottage at Spelman College; United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta Parking Deck; Youth Art Connection Gallery; The Olympic Aquatic Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology; John Hope Hall Science Research Facility at Morehouse College; the Southwest Family Branch YMCA; Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church; the Herndon Tower at the First Congregational Church UCC; and the Cathedral at Turner Chapel. The firm’s designs have been featured in many publications as well as a PBS special on American’s Houses of Worship.

Ron Skaggs has directed the overall activities of HKS, Inc. as chairman. With 44 years of experience, he currently serves as principal-in-charge of various healthcare projects. Ron has been actively engaged in the design of over 680 health-related institutions including hospitals, clinics, mental health facilities and medical schools. An acknowledged industry leader, he served as president of the American Institute of Architects in 2000 and is a distinguished alumnus of Texas A&M University.

Al Rubeling is a native of Baltimore County, Maryland, graduating from the University of Maryland School of Architecture in 1977. After five-years in practice, he formed his own architectural firm in 1981.

While serving as an officer in the U.S. Army Surgeon General’s Office, Ron worked with the Health Facility Planning Agency in programming and designing a wide range of Army medical facilities. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his contributions. Ron has a diploma in Healthcare Administration from the U.S. Army Academy of Health Sciences and has served as a faculty member and lecturer on the subject of Health Facility Design. He has worked with voluntary, proprietary and governmental client groups and is well versed on specific needs of each. Ron provides specialized medical interpretation during project development and works closely with the client and users in establishing project requirements and conceptual direction. Ron is a registered architect has previously received certification from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and was president of the AIA for the year 2000. He is currently Secretary of the AIA College of Fellows. Ron is past president of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health, past president of the Dallas Chapter AIA and a former Treasurer of the Board of Regents of the American Architectural Foundation. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Architects and Emeritus Fellow of the Health Facility Institute, a member of the American Hospital Association and past president of the Forum for Health Care Planning. He has served on the board of Construction Industry Round Table. Ron is a recipient of the Silver Medal from the Tau Sigma Delta honor fraternity and lifetime achievement awards from the Texas Society of Architects, American College of Healthcare Architects, Healthcare Symposium and AIA Dallas. Ron previously served as a member of the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Other board activities have included: chairman of the National Institute of Building Sciences; executive board member for the Boy Scouts of America Circle Ten Council; trustee, vice president and secretary of the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children; advisory board for the Texas A&M Foundation; and board of directors Texas A&M Association of Former Students. He is currently on the board of trustees of Dallas Baptist University.

Over the years, Al was appointed to the Maryland State Board of Architects and the Baltimore County Architectural Review Board. He is past president of the Essex Community College Foundation, and past member of the Leadership Baltimore County and Baltimore Foundation of Architecture. Al has also chaired the Architecture Committee for the Baltimore/Richard Bloch Cancer Survivors Park in Towson, and served on the Board for The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland. He now serves as a Trustee for St. James Academy as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. Al is currently on the faculty at the University of Maryland College Park School of Architecture as a Lecturer having taught the "Professional Practice" course, and currently, the "Careers of Architecture" course. Al has served as president of the Baltimore and Maryland Chapters of the American Institute of Architects. In 1993, the AIA elevated him to one of its highest honors in the College of Fellows. He has served on the National Board of Directors and is currently a Trustee of the National AIA Trust. He is the 2007 recipient of The Leslie N. Boney Spirit of Fellowship Award. Al’s book, “How to Start and Operate Your Own Design Firm,” was published in 1994 and 2007. As an architect and businessman, Al believes in a strong sense of professional and personal ethics to maintain his individual reputation as well as the reputation of his firm.

Blurred Boundaries

On a leisurely Friday afternoon as soon as I entered the exhibit floor of Architecture in the Expanded Field, I saw the connection immediately. Like the examination of dream vs. imaginary vs. drugged state of mind in the 2010 science fiction Inception or the 2011 thriller Limitless, my brain worked at lightning speed, and in a flash I could see the images of the work of all the AIA 2012 Young Architects Award (YAA) winners dancing in front of my eyes.

BIO

Deepika served as the AIA Las Vegas President in 2010, the first woman to serve as President with the Chapter. She served as the USGBC Nevada President in 2009 and taught LEED classes for many years. Deepika is the Founder and Past Chair for AIA Las Vegas Emerging Professionals/Young Architects Forum. She has Chaired many committees and initiatives with local chapters of AIA and USGBC. She has organized educational workshops at regional level, and regularly sits on design juries for architecture schools. Deepika is the Communications Advisor for AIA National Young Architects Forum, serving as the Editor-in-Chief for YAF Connection bimonthly e-magazine and the annual Young Architects Award Book. Deepika was awarded the AIA Nevada Associate Award in 2007 and the AIA Nevada Young Architect Award in 2008. She has been named Whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Who of Las Vegas by In Business and featured in the Las Vegas Business Press.

Inspired by Sculpture in the Expanded Field, an essay by Rosalind Krauss published in 1979, the exhibit revisited the blurred boundaries questioned by Krauss between sculpture, landscape and architecture at the time, and extended it to the blurred boundaries in the recent past and presently between architecture, sculpture, interior, and landscape. It was a tetralogue, an inquiry of where one merged into the other, an installation that brought together the principles of all four in the form of a maze of the work of notable architects, artists and designers from all the representative practices. The exhibit pulled me in to enter the maze and get lost in the spatial constructs of various corners and niches. There were moments when I was caught within a tight space and the only way out was to bend down or jump up. It was a sensory exploration that enticed me to touch the translucent panels, yet cautioned me to stay away for its materiality and seemingly weak connections. The lighting of the space, the black backdrop with mapping of the overall concept, and dim sounds of a video installation and visitorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; whispers added to the dreamy nature of the exhibit. It offered a fair platform to the divergent experiments, manipulations, distortions or constructs generated by those exhibited. I have had the privilege of visiting a few well-curated architectural exhibits. What set this exhibit apart from the rest is for its focus on organization of the work and generating a unique spatial experience that gets missed in the exhibits organized in a linear fashion limited to 2-D or relief displays on walls or through models displayed as sculptures. This exhibit blurred the boundaries between architecture, sculpture, interior, and landscape in the way the work was presented, making the four subjects the central theme of design. Interestingly, it became more about the exhibit design than the exhibits. Much of our professional lives have become a blur of what we do, what is expected of us, and everything we are involved in. The coverage of each young architect that won the AIA 2012 Young Architects Award is arranged in the YAA book in a linear fashion similar to a regular architectural exhibit. The story moves from one to the next. Yet when examined closely, one will identify the blurred boundaries of what is architecture and what goes beyond buildings. Here it is not necessarily an exploration of architecture, sculpture, interior, or landscape boundaries, but more of what the definition of traditional architecture is. Some of the winners are involved in community work, others excel in professional outreach, yet others are crossing the national boundaries to make a difference in the lives of people at a much larger scale than a mere building would do. These winners are questioning the role of an architect in our communities, standing tall in a tough economy that forced much of our talent into hopefully temporary exiles to other paths that will evidently make them stronger as they begin returning to the field. These winners portray the highest degree of commitment that is expected of the young architects of today marking the direction of our profession and leading the way for future generations. Join me in congratulating and thanking them.

2012 Yaf ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Young Architects Forum is the voice of architects in the early stages of their career and the catalyst for change within the profession and our communities. Working closely with the AIA College of Fellows and the American Institute of Architects as a whole, the YAF is leading the future of the profession with a focus on architects licensed less than 10 years. The national YAF Advisory Committee is charged with encouraging the development of national and regional programs of interest to young architects and supporting the creation of YAF groups within local chapters. Approximately 23,000 AIA members are represented by the YAF.
