Young Architects Award 2012

foreword Edward J. Kodet, Jr., FAIA

Planning for the success of future generations has long been viewed as one of the most important and worthy efforts an architect can accomplish. As with the historic apprenticeship program, architects throughout the centuries have felt the burden to carry the values and knowledge of the profession forward.

BIO

Edward Kodet, Jr., FAIA, received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Nebraska and a Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota. He began his career at the University of Minnesota as an Adjunct Faculty Member teaching design and working at a local architectural firm. In 1983 he founded Kodet Architectural Group, specializing in historic restoration and the design of educational, religious, public, and recreational facilities. Since graduating, Edward has been very active with AIA Minnesota on the Legislative Committee, Committee on Design, and the Convention Committee. He served on various boards and held several positions, including AIA Minneapolis and Minnesota President. In 2010, he was honored as the AIA Minnesota Gold Medal Recipient. Mr. Kodet has also served in many roles at AIA National, including: the North Central Regional Director in 1998, National Vice-President in 2002, Chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows in 2010, and as the sponsor for Santiago Calatrava’s Gold Medal in 2005. He is currently active on the National Committee on Design. Investing in the architectural community is an important aspect of Edward's career. He is the former Chair of the University of Minnesota College of Architecture Alumni Association and current Chair of the University of Nebraska Professional Advisory Committee. He has also served at the American Architectural Foundation from 2000 to 2011 where he chaired the Octagon Restoration Committee.

As an important part of advancing the profession, it is critical to recognize those who have shown exceptional leadership at an early stage of their career. This not only sets the stage for those individuals to serve as peer examples, but also to recognize that leadership and commitment to the advancement of the profession is cherished by all members. Serving as 2010 Chancellor of the College of Fellows, it seemed that we could advance our commitment to young architects by adding “to mentor young architects" to our mission statement. This is a profound obligation not only by the College of Fellows but the entire American Institute of Architects. With an ever-increasing commitment to service society, the College of Fellows has a deep gratitude to those interested in the profession as well as to those whose entire life has bettered our communities. We all recognize that our careers depended on our predecessors having the time and patience to set the examples we value today. The Young Architects engage, challenge and enlighten us as to how bright the future is for architecture. This publication contains recognition of individuals who have set and met the highest expectations, and of those who carry forward this commitment without acknowledgment. The Young Architects Forum (YAF), College of Fellows, and The American Institute of Architects are extremely proud of the many who have accepted the challenge to reach new heights in what architecture can do for our world. As you read about those receiving recognition, congratulate and thank them. Also thank those who have decided to make a commitment to joining our profession and will no doubt be building on what we leave behind. We will be judged not on what our generation has done but how well we have set the stage for future generations.

Young Architects Award 2012

2

young architects award The Young Architects Award is given to individuals who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession in an early stage of their architectural career.

eligibility Architect members of the AIA who have been licensed to practice architecture fewer than 10 years by the submission deadline are eligible to be nominated; the term young architect has no reference to the age of nominees. Any component, member of the national AIA Board of Directors, knowledge community, or College of Fellows may nominate one or more individuals. aia college of fellows The AIA College of Fellows (COF) seeks to stimulate a sharing of interests among Fellows, promote the purposes of the Institute, advance the profession of architecture, to mentor young architects, and be of ever-increasing service to society. The College of Fellows, founded in 1952, is composed of members of the Institute who are elected to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the architect as an individual but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society. aia young architects forum The Young Architects Forum is the voice of architects in the early stages of their career and the catalyst for change within the profession and our communities. Working closely with the AIA College of Fellows and the American Institute of Architects as a whole, the YAF is leading the future of the profession with a focus on architects licensed less than 10 years. The national YAF Advisory Committee is charged with encouraging the development of national and regional programs of interest to young architects and supporting the creation of YAF groups within local chapters. Approximately 23,000 AIA members are represented by the YAF. YAF programs, activities, and resources serve young architects by providing information and leadership; promoting excellence through fellowship with other professionals; and encouraging mentoring to enhance individual, community, and professional development. GOALS OF YAF: To ENCOURAGE professional growth and leadership development among recently licensed architects through interaction and collaboration within the AIA and allied groups. To BUILD a national network and serve as a collective voice for young architects by working to ensure that issues of particular relevance to young architects are appropriately addressed by the Institute. To MAKE AIA membership valuable to young architects and develop the future leadership of the profession. The Young Architects Forum Leadership consists of: - AdCom (chair, vice-chair, programs adviser, communications adviser, public relations adviser, events adviser, regional liaison adviser); - 18 Regional Liaisons appointed from the 18 geographic regions; - AIA Board of Directors Liaison; - AIA College of Fellows Executive Committee Liaison; - YAF Past Chair; - AIA Emerging Professionals Director. cof and yaf The structure of the national YAF in relation to the COF is the result of past discussions between the two groups focusing on a mentoring initiative, to encourage leadership development and a passing of the torch of insight to the younger group. These discussions led to the realization that the goals of the COF Mentoring Initiative and the YAF were so intertwined as to make an alliance inevitable. The COF/YAF structure provides for a stable leadership organization and a practical information gathering/dissemination system, while offering the benefits of the College‘s wealth of experience and insight to younger architects.

The Marquette Hotel Entry Renovation - Minneapolis, MN, 2008

Lead Designer The Marquette Hotel Entry Renovation solves issues of image, visibility, shelter and entry in a manner that is consistent with the language of this historically significant building. The hotel is located in the IDS Center, a large scale mixed-use urban development designed by Philip Johnson. The program elements for the project consist of new steel and glass entrance canopies, a new revolving door with vestibule, a new colored concrete walkway with snow melt system, signage, and a custom designed bench. The canopies consist simply of glass and steel. Pipe hangers suspended from wide flange and double channel beams support the grid of steel and glass. The wide flange beams are painted a dark bronze to blend with the exterior of the IDS building and make the canopy plane appear to float. 1

AIA Minnesota Housing Advocacy Committee - Search for Shelter Charettes, 1999-2011

Co-organizer/Team leader The AIA Minnesota Housing Advocacy Committee addresses the issues of affordable housing and homelessness. The committee works to keep these issues in front of decision makers, policy makers and the general public by organizing a variety of activities each year. Since 1987, the Search for Shelter Charette organized by the AIA MN Housing Advocacy Committee, has given design assistance to non-profits who otherwise would not be able to afford it. Although the design charette remains the most significant event that the committee sponsors, it has also worked to address the issues of homelessness and affordable housing in a variety of ways. Volunteers have organized design competitions, awarded scholarships, worked construction, toured emergency shelters, presented at the AIA convention and served as resources to university classes.

RECOMMENDATIONS “With his Design Excellence, Tim has earned the respect and enthusiastic support of his clients, his professional contemporaries, as well as his superiors. His peers have recognized him by awarding his projects with 2 AIA Honor awards, AIA design excellence awards and a number of preservation, urban design and scholarship awards. As designer, his projects range in scale from renovations to urban design, museums and commercial to housing, schools and transit stations. Tim is a facile designer who can apply his skill at any level, from high design to pushing the boundaries in low budget design, such as YouthLink. He delivers client value.” John L. Waugh, FAIA - Senior Design Principal, AECOM “I have taught/advised several hundred architecture students at four universities over the last 25 years. Tim stands out an exceptionally gifted student, leader and colleague. He is friendly, enthusiastic, curious, a great listener, and incredibly wise. At UNM, he helped revive a dormant AIAS chapter by serving as Treasurer. He greatly improved student culture at the school by organizing and setting up exhibitions and social activities.” Stephen Schreiber, FAIA - Professor and Director, U Mass - Amherst Architecture + Design Program “We were so pleased with the concepts introduced by Tim and his team that we are now nearing completion of the (Safebay shelter) project. Very soon 130 men each night will be staying in a more dignified setting and benefitting from improved outreach work as a result of the work initiated by Tim and his team. I can’t think of higher praise than this to provide regarding the work of Mr. Bicknell and the AIA MN Search for Shelter Project. Tim kept his team on task and delivered a valuable result. We are indeed fortunate to be the benefactors of this work.” Stephen Horsefield – Chief Operating Officer, The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center “A servant leader strives to help those who are the most unfortunate in the world, because their heart tells them it is the right thing to do. How do I know this is true for Tim Bicknell? I could see from the beginning that the Somalia project instilled a deep feeling in him, and I knew many others did not see it the same way. I realized that he is honestly in love with the idea of helping those kids in Somalia that are going to benefit from the teachers. His motivation was deeper than I could see. Out of all the original volunteers, he is the only one that has made it through to this point. One cannot develop that kind of persistence without a corresponding value from within.” Yusuf M Ali - Founder & CEO, SOMALIA 2020 “Tim’s work has always been filled with a deep sense of civic responsibility. He has brought his architectural knowledge to better the community organizations in which he has been involved by leading the design of the National Teachers College of Somalia in Garoowe. With County funding, Tim has also spearheaded design to renovate Youthlink’s existing structure, which originally began from a 2008 Search for Shelter Charette. He has been praised for his leadership, advocacy and connection with clients, colleagues and community members.” Stephen Fiskum, AIA - 2011 President, AIA Minnesota “Mr. Bicknell led the team that designed a more effective use of the (YouthLink) facility to include overnight emergency services for homeless young people. Since this time, Mr. Bicknell has never wavered in his assistance to help YouthLink paint the vision for what this agency could become for the youth served. Without hesitancy, Mr. Bicknell has given his time to participate in community forums, board meetings and focus groups regarding the need for this type of resource facility for homeless young people.” Heather H. Huseby, Ed.D. – Executive Director, YouthLink

20

Architecture Building Culture - Principal-in-Charge The Lubavitch Center of British Columbia (the Center) embraces a philosophy of study, meditation, and social outreach that combines rigorous academics with proactive community involvement. They moved into their new home at the corner of West 41 st Ave & Oak Street, Vancouver, BC, in 1999. The Center occupies the first 3 stories and basement level of a 5-story infill office/commercial building that gives very little clue as to the rich cultural activity within. Two key areas remained as ‘shell and core’ – the main level reception and meeting areas, and the mikveh. This project completes these critical programmatic areas and reestablishes the architectural character of the Center, and heightens the experience of its community members.

Patent 326 - Wellington, New Zealand, 2009

22

Project Architect (while working with Warren and Mahoney) Patent 326 comprises three buildings of exceptional design with flexibility in mind. The largest building, Semaphore, contains seven loggia and 15 dual level apartments as well as eight penthouses. The building along the western edge of the site Helmsman will border Cog Park and accommodates one single, two dual level apartments and four townhouses. The third building, Navigator, will contain six townhouses and will be parallel to Evans Bay Parade. Rather than being right on the street edge, it will be set back with private courtyards, ensuring a feeling of open space - a softer street edge in keeping with the character of the area. Each of the buildings has been designed to blend with its natural surroundings. Intelligent choice of materials and a focus on variation and form ensure that Patent 326 effortlessly harmonizes with its environment.

RECOMMENDATIONS “Since establishing his own practice, Brian has continued to be uniquely engaged in the future trajectory and development of the profession. He has sought to build a design driven practice focused on community engagement and leadership. He has served on a number of community and non-profit boards such as the Seattle Design Review Board; and was selected for the 2009 class of Seattle’s Leadership Tomorrow program, which prepares emerging leaders through leadership development for the benefit of the Puget Sound Region. Most recently, Brian was selected to be a Design Advocate for The 1%, a nationwide program that encourages pro bono service within the architecture and design professions. “ Michael Maltzan, FAIA, Michael Maltzan Architecture, LA “There are few people within the design profession that have the breadth of experience that Brian does. I praise his work not only because of its design quality and integrity, but because he is a model for other young practitioners, showing his success and the benefit of incorporating public service into ABC’s business strategy.Brian is a leader who can both speak holistically about practice and build resourcefully on opportunities that lie beyond the conceptualization of space.” John Peterson, Founder and President, Public Architecture “I have known Brian since our time together at Harvard & have watched with great admiration as he assumed a key leadership role at Michael Maltzan Architecture & held academic appointments at several esteemed schools of architecture. It is his last endeavor, however, that has impressed me most. His vision for a new kind of architectural practice, exemplified by the recent built work of ARCHITECTURE BUILDING CULTURE (ABC), has made it clear that he is most deserving of the AIA Young Architects Award. Brian’s design for the recently completed Stubbs Residence, for example combines innovative design thinking and visual sophistication with a deeply rational commitment to serving his client’s needs and best practices.” Hunter F. Tura, President and CEP, Bruce Mau Design, Inc. “From early days Brian has sought a broad intellectual context for his inquiry: through study abroad, concurrent minors in architectural history and philosophy, a distinguished graduate degree, and outstanding professional affiliations. He has been tireless in his drive towards stronger and clearer expressions of important concepts and principles in design. Brian appreciates every opportunity to develop new insights into fundamental questions about architecture and accepts the responsibility to present those insights for critical review by others.” Donald B. Corner, Professor of Architecture, University of Oregon “Brian has an amazing amount of dedication and focus. His passion for my project came through in our interactions. He’s a natural leader. He is a great listener and communicator. He is incredibly smart. He thinks on his feet. He is able to take a step back from what is happening to gain perspective; he clearly sees the bigger picture and is able to communicate it. I am thrilled to have engaged Brian’s firm, Architecture Building Culture to perform the research for our feasibility study, and to have Brian as my collaborator and partner. His contributions to the museum have already added enormous value to my thinking and my process.” Susan Hosking Ramos, Founding Director, San Francisco Film Museum “Brian is a true Servant-Leader, and someone who will continue to seek and find ways to serve more effectively. His passionate energy, his commitment to his profession and his community, and his extremely positive attitude has been inspiring to everyone who has worked with him. Brian is a man of vision, determination, energy, high intelligence, and integrity, who has demonstrated a deep commitment to civic engagement and giving back. I cannot think of anyone bettersuited to receive the 2012 AIA Young Architects Award.” Jan Levy, Executive Director, Leadership Tomorrow

MoMA QNS. - Long Island City, NY, 2002

24

Project Director The project is an examination of the museum's context within a transitional middle landscape, a condition between the urban and suburban which has neither the traditional identity of the urban center or suburban landscape. Importantly, they exist, almost pathologically, as a necessary and essential zone: a place of exchange. MoMA QNS's context is never fully formed but is instead in a permanent state of flux. This propelling condition constitutes an important context for contemporary culture, art, and understanding. As a result, the factory's original light blue color, which had a strong recognition value in an otherwise unremarkable context, was not simply maintained but was instead intensified, creating an amalgam at once familiar and unfamiliar. Coupled with the size and scale of the building, the Museum's presence, simultaneously iconic and abstract, could create a complex series of visual relationships within the context's overwhelming heterogeneity.

James M. Evans, AIA BIO In a relatively short time, Jim has joined an elite group of Texas architects who demonstrate nationally recognized design excellence with a fundamental commitment to environmental stewardship. This vanguard is epitomized by Mr. Evans’ outstanding professional achievements with several Houston practices, most importantly his own firm, Collaborative Designworks, and recently in the prescient potential of the remarkable and innovative Hometta online project, which he co-founded.

JURY COMMENTS

"Jim’s impact nationally and locally on the practice of architecture is inspiring. Inspiring also is the way he challenges his colleagues to think about innovation, practice, and design quality. Jim has led by example. His talent, skill and leadership in the profession have earned him the devotion of clients, contractors, and admirers alike."

Recently, Collaborative Designworks has begun to take on larger projects and in a widening geographical area - including retail and restaurant projects, a 120,000 SF training center, as well as homes on the lakeshore of New Orleans and in the hills of West Virginia. With the AIA in Houston, Jim is looking forward to continuing his committee involvement and serving on the board through 2014. Jim has led by example. He has made sure his career started early and started strong. In a difficult economy he has shown initiative by creating work when needed and seeing it to success; and he has encouraged the incorporation of his ideals and these achievements in his contemporaries’ careers. Jim’s approach to architecture has also pushed the boundaries of architect-as-developer, creating significant projects in this role. His work continues to prove the intrinsic and financial value of sustainable, uncompromising architectural design.

The 505 - Houston, TX, 2006

26

Architect – Collaborative Designworks The 505 is a 4-Unit townhouse development located near Houston’s rejuvenated downtown. The Architect spearheaded the project as an experimental design exercise that works within the economic and market constraints of a speculative housing development. The property is eligible for 5-Units, but only 4 were built in order to leave space for yards and to reduce the amount of shared walls. Various sustainable strategies were implemented, giving the project an environmentally responsible footprint. The unique form is a simple box that has been activated by a single shift made in plan. This shift allows for more windows in the envelope underneath overhangs that are oriented North/South rather than across to the adjacent units. The rotation in plan creates opportunities for flexible yet defined internal volumes that play dual roles.

Hyde Park Double - Houston, TX, 2010

28

Architect – Collaborative Designworks The Hyde Park Double presented a unique opportunity to design two single family homes on adjacent lots within an established neighborhood. Surrounded by a variety of architectural styles and an eclectic cultural mix, it was crucial to compose the two buildings to compliment each other without losing their individuality. The houses share certain common elements and materials, but the spatial arrangement relates to the City in two distinctly different ways. The houses achieve a balance between natural light and privacy with secluded front yards and central courtyards. Front porches, common in this neighborhood, are moved to the 2nd floor but maintain their public role along the street-front.

Lantern Bend P.O.B. - Houston, TX, 2003

30

Architect - Kirksey The Lantern Bend Professional Office Building was designed to meet the unique requirements of a rapidly expanding cardiology practice. The design intentionally creates a collegial atmosphere with outdoor walkways and courtyards to foster communication and chance meetings among professionals throughout the workday. In the client’s own words: “What was astonishing was the way our clinic matured from an initial plan enclosed in a rectangular configuration to a beautiful and unique use of space conforming to daily workflow, the nature of the property, and our position within a larger building structure.” Exam Pods are located on the north side of building allowing access to natural light and exterior views. Natural light enters the project primarily from the North at the intersections of the volumes as well as through artificially and naturally shaded fenestration in the courtyard area.

Caudill, FAIA. Jim has been an active member of several committees and now chairs the Residential Committee. In addition to his likable personality, which makes him a joy to work with, he is an unusually talented designer for his young age. “ Ian Powell – President, AIA Houston “His own practice, Collaborative Designworks, has produced work that is timeless, skillful and without pretense. It is refreshingly simple and direct, and very respectful of the context. It is also clear, that he has great skills in producing the highest quality work with limited financial resources. It is no surprise, therefore, that practically every project his office has produced, in its short history, has been recognized for design excellence through publications and professional awards. This, I believe, is a testament to innovative exploration, and skillful resolution of all the, often conflicting, needs and requirements of each of his projects.” John J. Casbarian, FAIA – Partner, Taft Architects “Jim exhibited qualities you want a juror to have. Through every round of the judging Jim was deliberate, methodical, and reasoned. He was particularly fair in terms of focusing on the merits of individual projects regardless of style and was never dismissive of projects simply because they did not suit his personal tastes. As a good juror should, Jim listened to the cases his co-jurors made for their favored projects and, in turn, spoke persuasively for his favorites. At the end of the day when it came time to make the final selections Jim was pragmatic and decisive and committed to a list of winners that reflected the opinions of the jury as a whole. I think the admirable qualities I observed in Jim in his role as juror simply parallel his qualities as a person.” Dan Shipley, FAIA – Shipley Architects “Jim is one of the founding architects of Hometta, an innovative web based company which markets and sells plans for small modern homes. While running his own highly successful architecture firm, he also helped get Hometta off the ground by recruiting other cutting edge architecture firms to join our collective, carefully vetting plans, mentoring employees, travelling to other cities to promote our company and its unique vision, and bringing his business experience, design skill, and high standards to bear at all times.” Mark Johnson - Hometta “On the national stage, Collaborative Designworks has brought an all-too-rare exposure to Houston’s commitment to design and green building. Jim’s townhome project, The 505, received recognition within our own professional association, but also reached millions as a featured project on the Discovery Channel’s “World’s Greenest Homes” programming. His casual personality and graceful work put a personal and approachable face to sustainable architecture for viewers who may have otherwise been unfamiliar with the design process of environmentally conscientious construction.” James L. Ray, AIA, James Ray Architects "Jim has led by example. He has made sure that his career started early and started strong. In a difficult economy he has shown initiative by creating work when needed and seeing it to success; and he has encouraged the incorporation of his ideals and these achievements in his contemporaries’ careers. He is a remarkable young architect, surely worthy of this recognition." Val Glitsch, FAIA - Texas Society of Architects Vice President/Outreach 2009-2010, Honor Awards Chair, 2011-2012

Oiltanking - Texas City, TX, 2007

32

Architect – Collaborative Designworks Amidst an endless expanse of spiky refineries, the new office building addition for OILTANKING Texas City announces itself as a small yet significant presence. The addition’s footprint strategically wraps the older buildings, creating outdoor courtyard spaces between the wings while simultaneously providing the facility with a new architectural identity. Left in its natural state, the concrete finish takes on the traits and texture of the sand slab on which it was poured. The depth of the folded concrete surface provides shading and added strength on the outside and is experienced inside through custom fitted millwork. The robust and raw quality of this undulating skin alludes to the wrapped design scheme and fluid flow of traffic around the building while appearing visually balanced within the surrounding industrial context.

Lead Architect Located in the Sacred Valley on the way to Machu Pichu. A modern indigenous Inca-like style of architecture was developed using confined masonry construction with limited long spans and fenestrations for seismic safety. The buildings were designed and engineered to be efficient, safe and beautiful while accommodating a very ambitious program on a small site. The New Life Church sanctuary is designed to accommodate 500 people. An outdoor, year around, covered pavilion expands the useable space for the school. The roof lines reflect the shape of the surrounding mountains and the simple floor plan, trapezoidal windows, sloping buttresses, rock veneer and shape of the buildings acknowledge ideas originated by the indigenous Inca master builders.

RECOMMENDATIONS “Shari is enthusiastically committed to helping the less fortunate through assisting philanthropic organizations in the development and design of facilities worldwide; India, Africa, Europe, central, North and South America (Peru, Honduras, Costa Rita, Mexico, USA and Canada). Her heartfelt designs use indigenous materials and inspiration from vernacular architectures, with a personal approach and hand sketches to facilitate construction in third-world countries. Examples of her projects are a technical school and training center, a facility for lodging visiting faculty, churches, master planning college campuses, cafeterias and lodging, and transitional housing and recovery facilities.” Kristi M. Byers, AIA - President, AIA San Diego “From the first time I met Shari, standing in the lobby of the architecture building, I have been impressed with her clear focus on understanding the influencing layers of architectural design so that she can use her profession to serve others. Her research for her doctorate took her to Japan, alone with a backpack, to explore the vernacular architecture still existing often in remote parts of Japan. Her intuitive nature allows her to fully see and feel the importance of historical architecture and integrate that to modern ideas..” Spencer Leineweber, FAIA – Graduate Chair Professional Program, School of Architecture, University of Hawaii Manoa “In 2009, (Shari) was recognized as Alumnus of the Year for NewSchool, in recognition of her many contributions to the School and the community. She was the founding president of the Alumni Association, and led its development into a viable service organization. Her work, through many arduous evenings and extended meetings, created a team, a structure, and a mission to guide the further development of the organization. She has remained close to the School, and has supported its development consistently when called to ‘duty.’” Dr. Steve Altman - President, New School of Architecture and Design “Dr. Grant is an outstanding professional and talented architect. Her interest and ability to refine and create excellence in her architectural work has greatly benefitted the clients she has served at Missionary TECH Team. She has demonstrated leadership on more than a dozen TECH Team projects and assignments. She is dedicated to bringing inspirational design to people of all walks of life and works well with both her clients and peers.” Robert J. Schill, AIA, CSI – Missionary TECH Team “In the course of watching Ms. Grant work I have seen her display many of the skills that distinguish a remarkable professional. She is very adept at communicating with her client, in this case a church congregation. Her work product reflects the ability to understand the design challenges and turn them into opportunities. She has the rare talent to turn a minority idea into a consensus by patiently exploring all sides of the issue. In the end she had an everlasting good influence on the design and beauty of our church. Her people skills are blended with the professional skills that I would have expected of an architect with decades of experience. She is truly a model for her proud profession.” Donald J. MacNeil – Elder, The Village Community Presbyterian Church “Shari's deep passion and the love she holds for people and architecture leads to a strong commitment evident both in her various leadership roles and in her architectural works. She is intelligent, smart, and artistic and inherently possesses a great sensibility and natural ability for leadership roles. With her background in engineering she demonstrates the right balance in combining the arts and sciences in her architectural and creative endeavors. She gives her all to clients and volunteer projects alike. On one hand, she is a practitioner, and on the other, she is constantly in pursuit of expounding her knowledge through research and experimentation.” Mitra Kanaani, AIA, D. The large overhanging plane folds down to become a wing wall, shielding a distant powerplant from view. On the other side, the roof is supported by exposed concrete columns aligned with the existing dock. The concrete columns, the roof, and the wing wall all taper towards the view. Three linear cuts provide framed views of the sky and reinforce the orientation toward the Bay. All of the private spaces are arranged around the double height volume of the living and dining room.

In my 35 years of practice, and 25 years of teaching, I have known of only one or two young people who excel so remarkably at both the practice and teaching of architecture. Mr. Halflants is an exceptional role model for younger generations of architects just graduating from school, as well as for those who have been practicing for many years.“ Robert McCarter, Ruth and Norman Moore Professor of Architecture, Washington University, St. Louis “The work presented by Michael (at the West Coast Florida AIA Convention) was impressive, not only by comparison to others, but in global terms as well. I have seen some of his recent work which continues to be of extraordinary quality. All of which is truly encouraging to see architectural work in Florida further the tradition started in the 1960’s by Rudolf and Twitchell. It has been a long time coming.” Peter L. Gluck, Peter Gluck and Partners Architects “Michael is an extraordinary educator with an uncanny ability to connect with students at all levels of the curriculum in both studio and seminars. The projects developed in the design studio under his tutelage are inevitably among the finest in our institution. Michael works closely with students to construct an educational environment that allows them to exceed even their own expectations. He is demanding, exceedingly fair and offers precise guidance, all in a warm and good-humored environment.” Robert M. MacLeod, AIA, Director and Professor School of Architecture & Community Design, University of South Florida “At an AIA meeting in Sarasota, Florida several years ago, I met Michael Halflants. He was an engaging young man and a pleasure to converse with because of our mutual backgrounds. I visited his teaching class at the University of South Florida on two occasions and learned that he was a gifted teacher in our field of architecture. One project was a preliminary planning exercise and the other was a municipal building in the mid-west. I liked his style of engaging all those present into the topic and then asking questions from all the participants. I even joined in on the line of questions.” Arthur Witthoefft, FAIA “I have known Michael for several years since he became a member of the faculty at the University of South Florida and I have had the pleasure of serving on a number of juries for his design classes including, most recently his masters program thesis jury where I had the privilege of serving as an advisor to one of his graduate students. I have always been impressed by the enthusiasm and energy with which he as undertaken the teaching of his classes and the professional dedication he has shown in these endeavors. I look forward to continuing to be invited to be involved with his classes in the future. I always come away with renewed enthusiasm for my work and the feeling that I gain more than I give through these experiences.” Dwight E. Holmes, FAIA, Holmes Architects

RECOMMENDATIONS “In fifteen years of professional practice, Michael’s work has made a major impact on the built environment in various building types. His designs have been recognized with numerous awards. At the same time he has maintained a dedicated commitment to profession with service that started with committee work at his local section and continued through service as a trustee and officer there and at the Chapter. At the end of this year, Michael will complete a very successful term as President of AIA NJ.” Jerome Lelsie Eben, AIA, AIA NJ Regional Director 2011-2013 “Michael J. Hanrahan, AIA is the prime representative of a new breed of young leader rejuvenating AIA New Jersey. Michael’s commitment to revitalizing the profession of architecture is widely recognized. He possesses the ability to easily reach consensus among numerous divergent opinions to form reasoned, thoughtful responses that proactively address the issues confronting our organization. AIA New Jersey has been able to maintain a high level of service to our membership due to Michael’s plan for fewer, albeit more meaningful programs which increased the financial stability of AIA New Jersey. This strategy reversed previous economic losses. In addition, Michael oversees all of our committees which support our members and promote the public’s understanding of architecture through advocacy, education and service.” Joseph A. Simonetta, CAE, Executive Director AIA New Jersey “AIA Central New Jersey is the largest of the six sections that comprise the New Jersey Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Faced with a lack of leadership continuity in the early 2000’s, Michael quickly ascended the ranks of our organization. Prior to Michael’s presidency, four of the previous five presidents did not complete their terms. Not only did he restore order to our leadership, Michael excelled. As an example, the number of continuing education/member events doubled due to Michael’s efforts as he personally planned thoughtful programs throughout the year which dramatically increased our attendance and profitability. These events focused on sustainability, historic preservation and adaptive re-use which showcased the combination of Michael's architectural and leadership skills.” Donna Terzano, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C “I was especially pleased to learn that Michael’s exceptional work ethic and business sense has earned appropriate recognition with his appointment as Associate Partner at Clarke Caton Hintz, which I regard as one of New Jersey’s leading firms in an endeavor that I hold especially critical: the renewal of our architectural heritage. Not surprisingly, his contributions go beyond his role as a practicing architect. Over the years that I have known him, Michael has always been ready and willing to share his talents and experience with others, having served as a member of the historic Preservation Commission in his community and, very recently, leading AIA NJ as its president to organizational stability at a very crucial time.” Jon D Hlafter, FAIA, FAUA, University Architect Emeritus, Princeton University “For over twelve years, the County of Hunterdon has worked together with Clarke Caton Hintz on multiple projects. Throughout this time, I have worked directly with Michael Hanrahan who has served as project manager for all of these projects, most notably the County’s buildings at our Main Street Complex in Flemington, New Jersey. Every project overseen by Michael was well managed, beginning with a well prepared, coordinated set of construction documents, personally reviewed by Michael for quality assurance. Ultimately, Michael directly administered the construction of each building, ensuring the projects met the established budgets and schedules. I have known Michael to be responsive, dependable and professional.” Fran J. Bell, AIA, Hunterdon County Architect “Michael has diverse skills and is highly creative. He has developed an impressive list of credentials and breadth of work at an early point in his career and we are particularly excited about his potential. He is involved in all aspects of the firm and is devoted to creating long lasting, enduring and beautiful spaces. And he has accomplished all of this while participating in an extraordinary array of public service positions; we couldn't think of anyone better qualified for this prestigious award!” John Hatch, AIA, LEED AP, Principal Clarke Caton Hintz George Hibbs, AIA, Principal Clarke Caton Hintz John Clarke, FAIA, Senior Principal Clarke Caton Hintz

Project Architect - Courtrooms, Judges’ Chambers, Prisoner/cell/secure areas The new eight-story 290,000 s.f. Federal Courthouse is currently under construction with completion slated for fall 2012. Replacing the existing, outdated courthouse, the new courthouse will house courtrooms and associated jury facilities, judges' chambers, court offices and tenant areas for other government agencies. The project, under planning and design since 2003, was on semi-permanent hold until the floods of 2008 pushed it to the top of the priority list when the existing courthouse was flooded and rendered unusable. The first major project to start construction after the floods, the Courthouse stands as a symbol of Cedar Rapids’ rejuvenation.

Carnegie-Stout Public Library - Dubuque, IA, 2007-2010

62

Project Manager / Project Design This project involves the renovation of a 50,000 square foot public library consisting of an original building constructed in 1901 and a 1984 addition that, while dramatically increasing the size of the library, effectively created two separate halves, each with its own architectural style and personality, and with very little connection between the two. The design team was presented with the challenge of unifying these two disparate halves as part of a building-wide reorganization and remodeling, while also embracing the historic original portion of the building for public use. Rather than a strict historic restoration, which would limit the building’s functionality, there novation honors the historic nature of the building, restoring certain key components, while re-purposing others for modern use.

RECOMMENDATIONS “When Ms. Harms commits herself to a cause or task you can count on her for completion of that task with energy, enthusiasm, dedication and follow-through. She enlists the help she needs from her colleagues to conduct the work. Katie’s demeanor is professional, responsive and collaborative. She will lobby hard for her case, but also will listen to reason from others and adjust her focus if need be. She is not afraid to express her opinion and pursue her agenda in a constructive way. In addition, she maintains her sense of humor along the way. I truly can’t speak highly enough of Katie Harms and her work on behalf of the members of our state, region and nation. She has contributed “above and beyond the call” of the profession and done so efficiently, constructively, and superbly. She is one to watch out for as she continues to contribute to the AIA and the profession. I expect even greater things from her in the future!” Suzanne Schwengels, Hon. AIA CAE, AIA Iowa Executive Vice President 1986-2011 Ben Hildebrandt, AIA Iowa Executive Director Rick Seely, AIA, AIA Iowa Board President “Post graduation Katie has continued to be a leader and an advocate for her peers at every level, devising and championing effective initiatives to advance emerging professionals. She has identified shortcomings in the resources available to emerging professionals at the state, regional and national level, and then designed and led initiatives to overcome these shortcomings, for the benefit of her peers and the profession.” Kate Schwennsen, FAIA, Hon. JIA, Hon., FCARM, Hon.FKIA, Hon.RAIC, Hon.RAIA, SFDFC Professor & Chair 2006 AIA President “Katie continues to work unwaveringly within the profession, among her peers, and throughout the community – and balances her participation from local and state efforts to regional and national involvement. Within the profession she has served in leadership roles on projects ranging in scale and scope that few her age have an opportunity to contribute to. Among her peers, she has focused on mentoring her colleagues – specifically around critical licensure issues and IDP efforts, and has served as a role model for advocating the importance of licensing in our profession. Throughout both the professional and public communities, she has expressed the relevance of sustainability as a fundamental ingredient for the value of design” Dennis A. Andrejko, FAIA, Chairman, Master of Architecture Program, Rochester Institute of Technology, Vice President, American Institute of Architects, National Board “Ms. Harms maintains a deep conviction to strengthening opportunities for the next generations of our profession. This conviction combined with her intelligence and leadership skills, immediately earned the respect from the entire CSR (AIA, Central States Region) Council, allowing her to clearly influence our council agenda during her tenure. In addition to the excellent design and project leadership she is currently providing as an architect for OPN Architects, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, her ongoing and unselfish commitment to ensuring a strong and relevant future for young architects across the country makes her a unique and well-deserved recipient of the AIA Young Architects Award.” Edward J. Vidlak, AIA, Vice President, Leo. A Daly, 2009 AIA Board of Directors “Katie embodies the leadership, talent, passion and commitment that this profession needs. She has been extraordinarily involved in the workings of OPN Architects, her community, and our profession. In nine short years, Katie has demonstrated superior technical knowledge, design talent, project management, and the ability to lead others. Katie has been an extraordinary advocate for the development of our youngest professionals. She consistently approaches the firm’s management with ideas which strengthen the experience of our architectural interns.” Steven K. Knierim, OPN Architects, AIA, Past President, AIA Iowa 2005 “A selfless advocate, as the 2009 NAC Advocacy Director, Katie led the NAC and Associate leaders nationally in numerous advocacy initiatives, for the benefit of the profession, and Associate members. Several state registration boards were successfully lobbied to adopt regulations allowing for IDP and ARE concurrency. Interns were informed about the transition from ARE versions 3.1 to 4.0, so they would not need to retake previously passed tests. The proposed IDP version 2.0 was reviewed, with comments provided to NCARB. The new electronic verification system to be used by interns to document IDP was tested and critiqued. A research effort, a member survey and discussion took place, into the myriad of “intern” titling rules of NCARB’s 54 member boards. In all of these areas, Katie led and was the guiding hand behind a committee of advocates.” Jonathan Matthew Taylor, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, Project Manager, LLB Architects, 20062008 AIA New England Regional Associate Director, 2009 AIA NAC Chair, 2009-2011 AIA National Associate Director

City of Cedar Rapids, Master Planning Post Flood of 2008 - Summer of 2010

64

Project Manager / Project Design The purpose of the open houses was to engage the public in the process of rebuilding downtown City Services post flood. We obtained public opinions from their examination of informational boards, asking questions at open houses and then finally providing input on each building and public space affected in the flood. The open houses helped to guide the most effective use of community facilities to meet the needs of the city today and for future generations. This information was given to the City Council for guidance on four points; 1) Returning to existing buildings as they were at the time of the flood, 2) Return to existing buildings as they were at the time of the flood, with upgrades, 3) Consider new buildings, alternate locations, and the possibility of co-location, and 4)Reoccupy another existing building, which was added as a result of participant feedback.

Thomas Jacobs, AIA BIO Thomas Jacobs has been contributing to our built environment throughout his 16-year career in ways that define leadership for our next generation of Architects. He has been an integral part in the creation of some of the best buildings in Chicago and beyond. As Principal and Project Architect with Krueck + Sexton, Tom’s success is rooted in his ability to contribute to teams and partnerships through clear communication, critical thinking, and creativity. As a leader in the truest sense of the word, Tom rigorously challenges assumptions in pursuit of prudent approaches, and charismatically brings out the best of a process, of a building, and most importantly, of all people involved.

JURY COMMENTS

"His design work is superb! Tom is tireless in his dedication and devotion to the practice of architecture, to his clients, team members, and students. His guidance and aspiration for the profession is infectious. Tom is a consummate team leader who cares deeply about the things that matter most."

After receiving his Diploma of Architecture from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Switzerland, Tom moved to the United States to start his career with Krueck + Sexton Architects. At this time, he conceived some of the hallmark design elements in the Herman Miller Showroom in Chicago. Following that project, he returned to Switzerland to work with Herzog & de Meuron (1999-2002) where he was on the project teams for the Jack S. Blanton Museum in Austin, Texas and the New de Young Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. An intensely formative period in Tom’s early career, Tom was Project Architect for the 10-story twisting education and observation tower. He established the California office of H&deM in San Francisco in late 2000. Then, in 2002 he returned to Krueck + Sexton as the first Associate Principal. In 2010 Tom was made the first Principal of Krueck + Sexton, and is the designated future leader for the firm. Along with his work at Krueck + Sexton, Tom is an advocate for community development and planning as an active member of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s Citizen Advisory Committee, helping to implement Chicago’s GOTO 2040 Plan. He also serves as chair of the Riverside Sustainability Council, an organization he founded in 2008. In addition, Tom writes a monthly column for the Riverside Landmark on the challenges and opportunities of sustainability as a guiding principle.

66

Design Architect As Design Architect on the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, working with Ron Krueck, FAIA and Mark Sexton, FAIA in a three part design team, Tom helped to redefine the 19th Century land marked Historic Michigan Avenue streetwall by adding a decidedly 21st century building. The largest built building in Tom’s portfolio to date, Spertus is a 145,000 square-foot mixed-use building. Its diversity of program elements allowed for spatial opportunities which opened up this vertical campus to bring light deep into the infill property from a three-story sky lit atrium. The spatial exploration, along with the openness & materiality and complicated jewel-like façade make Spertus one of a few buildings which define 21st century Chicago architecture.

The Crown Fountain - Millenium Park, Chicago, IL, 2004

68

Project Architect / Project Design- Arena The Crown Fountain was a technical achievement whose success is due to many participants. Together with Mark Sexton, FAIA, Tom led a team of specialty consultants, engineers, and fabricators through a trial-and-error process which led to the successful integration of otherwise disparate materials & technologies. Charting new territories, this project was a project of learning on many levels. Krueck + Sexton did not conceive of the design idea, but the roles were reversed. Instead they were responsible for making someone else’s concept flourish. Creating a successful project for another artist’s vision required a completely different set of skills and type of teamwork. It required a perspective that embraced planned failure through mock-ups. It was a process characterized by humbleness that Tom embraced.

Project Architect With 1100 First Street, Tom’s Project Architect role was expanded as he led the design effort for this out-of-town speculative office building. Tom’s collaboration with Gensler, the Architect-of-Record, and Tishman Speyer, the developer/client, defined his role on the most basic level. He was also responsible for developing a unitized curtain wall with a dynamic quality to it, allowing for light to reflect deep into an entry courtyard. Success of this project was measured on very different terms from the other projects in Tom’s portfolio, with a primary client objective being to work within the extremely tight margins of developer economics and marketability. Yet, the design aspirations did not yield. With Tom’s design guidance and communication, 1100 First Street has achieved the highest quality and details on a tight and competitive budget.

RECOMMENDATIONS “Following our first introduction, Tom invited me to serve as an outside juror to the Senior Design studio under his guidance at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). It was there that I had the opportunity to see his profound influence in transferring to his students his commitment to excellence. Under his mentorship, his studio produced an extraordinary body of work, Not only did he capture their attention, he placed high expectations on the goals of learning. With this first-hand opportunity to witness the outcomes of his leadership, subsequently, Tom has been teaching a graduate seminar on Authenticity and Detail in the program I direct for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning. In all these instances, I've witnessed Tom's ability to serve our community with a visual and vocal commentary of the highest standards of professionalism for our industry. Tom’s dedication to push the agenda for the elevation of the practice of Architecture, his ability as a top strategic thinker, his strength of leadership and his steadfast commitment to public outreach have caused him to become a sought-out mentor and advisor to students and the professional community.“ Neil P. Frankel, FAIA, Fitzhugh Scott Endowed Chair in Design Excellence, University of Wisconsin/ Milwaukee, Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning. “I am not going to write about Tom’s work and his sensitivities to materials, proportions, line, color, scale, or his unique understanding of architectural engineering. I believe these are self-evident in the photographs of his work. I am going to write about a rarer and more difficult journey of Tom’s that I was able to perceive as I've worked with him over the past fourteen years. Through those years, I have seen Tom evolve from a fine intern to an eloquent young architect, who is respected by his colleagues for his insistence and belief that exceptional architecture can and does make a difference in people’s lives. He has never rested on his accomplishments, but rather he has been spurred forward because of them, confronting new criteria and establishing new parameters within which innovative solutions can be developed.” Ronald A. Krueck, FAIA “Tom is outstanding in problem solving and strategic thinking, as evidenced, by the success he has achieved for the GSA. Tom’s character is never called into question and I would work with Tom again without reservation and am looking forward to continuing our relationship. Lastly, I would like to point out that the project is being recognized nationally from numerous sources. As the design comes out of the ground, Tom will be recognized for having a strong role in the projects success. The bottom line is Tom continues to contribute extensively to GSA’s and my success.” Steven C. Smith, CCM, RA, DBIA, GSA Southeast Sunbelt Region “Tom demonstrated that he possesses all those traits we value in an architect and very rarely find in a single individual. Tom possesses an excellent eye for design, a solid base of technical and sustainable knowledge and is relentless and never tiring in the pursuit of the overarching goal of a great architect: delivery of a rational and beautifully designed and constructed piece of architecture. Tom’s outstanding professional contribution is made possible by his thoughtful and effective leadership and management style. Tom is skilled at juggling multiple priorities of a complex architectural project while delivering results without ever compromising standards or deadlines.” Christian H. Schoer, Senior Director Design + Construction, Tishman Speyer “I know Tom best from watching with great interest the impact he has had on the students in the School of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where we are both Adjunct Professors. I have seen him work hand in glove with RonKrueck, FAIA in their joint studio to define architecture in the highest terms for their fledgling students, molding them into the architects of tomorrow. His knowledge, sympathy---his example---make him that rare thing, a truly inspirational teacher. I love having Tom as a reviewer of my students’ work because it is here that I have been able to see him actually at work, thinking architecture, and it has always been an inspiration to me too. But the truly inspiring thing about Tom is his impressive ability---in the best Chicago tradition---to help turn the highest level of architectural thought into buildings that work in the best sense of the word.” David Woodhouse, FAIA, David Woodhouse Architects “For Thomas, community is a wide net. I know that he has served as an architecture instructor, guiding, inspiring and encouraging young creators in their quest to make their dreams a reality. Thomas is the founder of the Riverside Sustainability Council. The Council’s success at convincing the village board of our sometimes-xenophobic town to allow the connection of two bicycle paths – trails that will now run through Riverside was a remarkable success. In that same vein, in the pages of our local paper, Thomas has challenged Riverside’s wariness on such sensitive issues as park use and school district responsibilities. His columns aren’t unanimously applauded, but they have sparked readers such as me to reexamine previously held opinions.” Andrew Herrmann, Managing Editor, Chicago Sun-Times

The Chicago Children’s Museum - Chicago, IL, 2016

72

Project Architect As Project Architect on the Chicago Children’s Museum in Grant Park, Tom helped to shepherd a process of community review & awareness along with design revisions to meet the often contradictory objectives of the mayor’s office, the local residents and the Museum. The design for the new Chicago Children’s Museum engages the children in the space, the structure, and the very earth of their city in a building that allows the entire project footprint to remain park land. The overarching dedication to the true Client of this building -the children- is an effort that Tom led with enthusiasm and vision. Making certain that the museum kept its design integrity throughout a contentious public process, and constantly pushing the design to make it better for the children: ensuring expansive light and views, increasing park space, and providing for a unique experience that would engage the children through all their senses. The Chicago Children’s Museum is an example of the leadership and vision that Tom has fostered in his young career.

Shanghai Tower - Shanghai, China, Completion 2014

74

Project Designer, Gensler Shanghai Tower is organized as nine cylindrical buildings stacked one atop another. The inner layer of the double-skin façade encloses the stacked buildings, while a triangular exterior layer creates the second skin, or building envelope, which gently rotates as it rises. The spaces between the two façade layers create nine atrium sky gardens. With sky gardens lining the tower’s perimeter, Shanghai Tower is literally wrapped in public spaces. Both interior and exterior skins are transparent, establishing a visual connection between the tower’s interiors and Shanghai’s urban fabric. On the ground level, retail and event spaces, in tandem with abundant entrances on the site, further the physical and visual connections between the tower and the city.

One South Dearborn - Chicago, IL, 2003

76

Senior Designer, Keating/Khang Architects Situated along the axis of the great Chicago plazas where artists such as Chagall, Miro, and Calder placed their monuments, this building at the corner of Dearborn and Madison follows in that same tradition. By setting the building back from Dearborn Street, an intimate urban space is framed by the iconographic Inland Steel Building. The simplicity and efficiency of the typical office floor is accentuated at the corners where subtle manipulations in the curtainwall allow for the building to shift away from the standard mold. Rooted at its base that pays homage to the adjacent classical Chicago buildings in both material and architecture, a window to the city and lake beyond tops off the building as the glass drifts toward the sky.

Design Director, Gensler Located at the intersection of the major commercial and cultural corridors of Fifth and Liberty Avenues, the Three PNC Plaza project seeks to reinvigorate the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. The building incorporates office, hotel and residential condominium programs at the tower levels. While the building is highly visible from various view corridors, it also resides within the context of its immediate block and tries to be a good neighbor to the adjacent buildings. The building strives to achieve timelessness through its simplicity of form and planning and aspires to stand as a new landmark within the city.

RECOMMENDATIONS “Hao is one of the most creative young architects I have had the pleasure to work with. He has designed many exciting projects, but two I have worked on with him have been very special experiences for me. One is the PNC office building in Washington, D.C. It is hard to do a great design in D.C., but Hao created a great LEED Platinum building with a fantastic lobby diagonally across the street from the old executive office building. The second project is planned to be a forty-story plus high rise in Pittsburg, also for PNC. The brief for the building is to be the most sustainable building in the United States. Hao and the client have travelled the world investigating possible great solutions. He has come up with a design solution that is practical, affordable and beautiful.“ M. Arthur Gensler Jr., FAIA, FIIDA, RIBA – Gensler “Beyond his commitment to architectural excellence, Hao is a sincere gentleman who impressed me with his thoughtful approach, his tremendous creativity, and his humble, unpretentious style. It has been a great privilege in my career to work with some of the world’s greatest architects, and my experience with Hao Ko was second to none.” Mitchell N. Schear – President, Vornado Charles Smith “Hao’s creativity and vision has been instrumental in several of PNC’s development and construction projects, including PNC Place, PNC’s regional headquarters building located in Washington, DC, a few blocks from the White House, and Three PNC Plaza mixed use project which contains office space, the Fairmont Pittsburgh, a parking garage and condominiums located in Pittsburgh,. Due to Hao’s innovation, PNC Place has been certified LEED Platinum and Three PNC Plaza has received LEED Gold certification. Both buildings have received international recognition for design and sustainability.” Gary Jay Saulson – Director of Corporate Real Estate, The PNC Financial Services Group “It is truly hard to think of Hao as a “young Architect” because he has already achieved so much in his career and because of how selflessly he gives back to the profession through his commitment to mentorship. Hao is as focused on the outcomes of his efforts as he is on the process of working with others to achieve them. Hao is an amazingly gifted talent and his example inspires both our team and our clients with purpose and focus. He exhibits the talent, leadership, and accomplishment that I believe this program is looking to acknowledge.” Peter Weingarten, AIA LEED BD+C – Director, Gensler “What separates Hao from other extremely talented designers is his ability to listen and learn from his clients, colleagues and consultants. He is an incredible team player that has built a portfolio of work that embodies all of his design talent combined with his ability to weave in the thoughts, opinions and desires of the collective team. The other attribute that makes Hao a terrific designer is the “pursuit of purpose” in the work he leads. He pushes all to make sure that the design is more than just design, that it must solve the problem, provide a form of meaningful innovation, have logic and ultimately “add value” beyond simply an aesthetic solution.” Douglas Gensler, AIA, - Principal, Gensler “Hao is thought of as a leader in our office. Younger architects as himself consider him a valuable mentor and seek out his advice, opinions and feedback. Hao is an innovator. He embraces the latest ideas in sustainable design and recently spoke at Greenbuild. He takes advantage of new software in his design process, and he has helped our firm adapt to emerging trends in BIM-enabled integrated delivery.” Steve Weindel, AIA, LEED AP – Principal, Gensler

Design Director, Gensler Located at the confluence of 17th and H Streets in Washington DC, PNC Place resides on a prominent corner a block away from the White House. With axial views to the Monument, the building is oriented toward this remarkable southern exposure. In a city of monuments, the team set out to design a building that is of its context, is timeless at its style, and is precise in its detailing. The building also aspires to establish a new benchmark in the city by achieving LEED Platinum status.

Stuart Magruder, AIA BIO Stuart's aesthetic tends toward California minimalism. Simplicity is favored over complexity; an understated detail is preferred over a flashy one. Believing that the best works of architecture push one idea through the entire project, editing is a key part of his process. A crucial part of the design process is avoiding the temptation to over-design.

JURY COMMENTS

"His enthusiasm for the practice of architecture, the quality of his work and his desire a n d w i l l i n g n e s s to put forth time and effort to improve our profession i s u n pa r a l l e l e d. Through his practice and C h a p t e r r e l at e d a c t i v i t i e s , St u a r t has made a s i g n i f i c a n t i m pa c t o n o u r b u i lt e n v i r o n m e n t, the practice of architecture and his community"

Due to the scale and scope of his clients, Stuart is currently focused on figuring out how to use industry standard details without accepting the resulting aesthetic: how to use a product, such as a nail-on window, in the standard way without it appearing standard. The challenge is to design refinements to the standard that maintain its speed of installation and affordability. Stuart has found that it is much harder to do minimalism on smaller scale projects with limited budgets: the material options are fewer. So working and transforming what industry has to offer is key to creating meaningful work. With close to a decade of practice behind him, Stuart has a deep conviction that architects must be engaged in the political process. Local, state, and national leaders make the rules that architects play by; if architects do not participate with the elected leaders in that process, the quality of the built environment suffers and the satisfaction of being an architect diminishes. It is for this reason that he is involved in the AIA.

Culver City Hill House - II, 2011

82

Principal, Studio Nova A Architects, Inc. This project started with a bang - the bang of the backyard falling 80 feet down hill in amudslide. The owners wanted to turn the disaster - in which noone was hurt - into an opportunity to create a sustainable house for them and their growing family. The projectre-orients the siteby aligning the housealong the eastern sideof the flat lot. This creates an outdoor room set back from the hill and thus enjoyable. The house engages the hill by extending out over it. Built to last, the house is super insulated, generates enough electricity to feed itself and the grid, uses gray water for landscape irrigation, grows three green roofs, and is clad in materials that do not require finishes.

Principal, Studio Nova A Architects, Inc. This renovation and addition project took a 900 square foot, 1920’s ‘Craftsmanesque’ house - in a very challenged state - and brought it back to life. We added 600sf to the house and built a 500 sf garage/studio/office, all without destroying the integrity of the existing house. From the street, the new is barely visible, allowing the spruced up original to shine. Only once you enter into the dinning room or stroll down the driveway does the new make itself known. Views from within the home focus on the greenscape, creating an open and private feel. The home is super insulated, and utilizes cross ventilation to minimize the need for mechanical heating and cooling.

Principal, Studio Nova A Architects, Inc. This small medical office building for a doctor's low-income clinic practice, had a small budget as well. Set on a tight corner lot in a tough but upcoming section of town, this project brings a level of design intent rare for the neighborhood. The project needed to be open yet private and safe yet welcoming. To accomplish this, large windows to the street are arranged in the public spaces(reception, hall, and clerical areas)while small and high openings are placed to provide natural light to the nursing staff and in the patient rooms (two with skylights). A high walled rear courtyard provides a calm space of light and air for the staff.

RECOMMENDATIONS “Stuart began his service to the profession of architecture in 2007 as the AIA Liason to the Young Architects Forum in the Southern California region. Since that time, Stuart served as the Treasurer of the AIA Los Angeles Board from 2009-2010. He is currently the AIA/LA Chapter’s Vice President and will assume the role of President in 2012. During his time on the AIA/LA Board, Stuart has also been an active and contributing Director on the AIACC Board. In addition to executive leadership roles, Stuart continues his involvement on the AIA/LA Political Outreach Committee (POC) and the Committee on the Environment (COTE), both of which he has been a part of since 2006. For the POC, he designed and produced AIA/LA’s Legislative Day booklets for four years. With COTE, he has assisted with implementing a number of programs and initiatives ” Michael A. Enomoto, FAIA, Manging Partner, Gruen Associates AIACC 2011 First Vice President/President Elects “He is a leader; he naturally understands the importance and power of political engagement. He gets it, that for architects, civic engagement fortifies design, and design fortifies the citizen. He has spent time crafting advocacy issues that the Chapter has brought to the local political leadership and he has lobbied our state and national leaders on the issues pushed by the Council and by AIA National, respectively. Stuart confidently talks to politicians in terms that they understand and care about." Michael B. Lehrer, FAIA, Lehrer Architects, LA President, Homeless Healthcare Los Angeles, President, AIA LA Chapter, 1999 "I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Stuart for over three years, through our shared experiences on the Board of AIA/LA. During my tenure as Vice President, President and Past President, Stuart served as chapter Treasurer, Vice President and Executive Committee member. Throughout his term on the Board, Stuart has brought thoughtful and informed opinions and clear and committed actions to our AIA/LA leadership team. I quickly developed a great trust and respect for Stuart and came to count on him heavily for his counsel and his energies in engaging challenges facing the Chapter. Stuart’s unique ability to understand complex problems and his willingness work proactively with others to reach true consensus made him in invaluable asset to our Board and the members of our chapter." Paul Danna, AIA - Principal, AECOM "Stuart is a highly qualified architect that was employed by our firm from 1999 to 2005. His design and technical skills are extremely well-developed. He communicates his thoughts with ease, and his ability to challenge "prescription" in favor of developing options made him a valuable contributor to complex projects in our office. Stuart was an effective and productive contributor in the design of the firm's award-winning San Jose City Hall, as well as a team member on the development of design concepts for the new Federal Courthouse in San Diego, as well as a private residence in San Francisco. It was a pleasure having Stuart as a collaborator. He is highly motivated and thrives on interaction with colleagues, consultants and clients." Michael Palladino, FAIA – Partner, Richard Meier & Partners, Architects “Stuart was elected to serve as Treasurer at AIA/LA within 6 years of being licensed. His interest in civic engagement led him to be a key participant in the AIA/LA Political Outreach Committee. At the annual legislative day, Stuart authored several issues that were presented to LA City Officials. These issues began a dialogue with the city on sustainability in the built environment and dealt with critical areas of water and distributed power. Stuart has been engaged with the Young Architects Forum for many years and led Southern California South, as our representative. Stuart’s dedication to the profession is manifested through his interest and service as a citizen architect. His interests are broad and numerous, and he is an engaging professional at all levels of our field." Mark Gangi, AIA – Gangi Architects “I have witnessed Stuart taking the lead on numerous initiatives in the public realm, to further the cause of sustainability and the broader role of the architect in policy-making. He has led seminars and connected politicians and the business community in discussions about the importance of sustainability at all levels. Stuart carries an attitude refined in the design and construction of the LEED-EBOM Platinum San Jose Civic Center in Richard Meier’s office, to create contemporary, sustainable projects, but on a smaller scale. He has been able to work in the small scale residential and commercial marketplace, focusing on passive strategies and integrating them into the design of the project. Not an easy task, given the small scale and small budgets, and inherent reluctance of others involved." Angie Brooks, AIA – Brooks + Scarpa Architects

The Studio's scheme answered the call with a concrete structure cantilevered out of the ground. All the energy needed for the structure is produced on site (photovoltaic and thermal solar panels, and geothermal heating / cooling). A crow's nest sits atop the structure, offering a view space. The resident constantly traverses from interior to exterior as a part of the daily use of the structure helping to heighten the ecologist's connection to the surroundings.

Adam has had opportunity to experience different roles as an architect. He started his career working in the traditional role of a project architect, providing leadership throughout all aspects of a building project throughout the planning, design, construction documents, and construction process. He also has provided leadership in non-traditional roles as an architect. He has served as a program manager for a variety of healthcare systems and public school systems. In this role, he has led clients through budgeting, planning, building standards development, Design-Build Criteria development, and even the interviewing and hiring of design and construction professionals. Adam served as the AIA National Young Architects Forum (YAF) Chair in 2011, served four years as the YAF Ohio Valley Regional Liaison, and as the YAF Advisory Committee (AdCom) Vice Chair in 2010, he served as chair of the YAF AdCom Selection Committee and the YAF Regional Liaison Selection committee, and is a member of the AIA Indianapolis YAF. He believes in the power of mentoring and has trained more than 100 other mentors at the 2007 AIA National convention, “Mentoring Essentials for IDP Supervisors and Mentors.” While on the AdCom, he was instrumental in the creation of the YAF/COF Mentoring Series Webinars, reaching out to more than 300 members.

RECOMMENDATIONS “The positions he has held at the national, regional and local level reads as a “check list” for all the possible positions a young architect could be appointed or elected to in addition to volunteering for in regards to AIA national and component offices and committee service. In addition, he has been a true ‘architect as civic leader,’ a designation on which I place a great deal of importance. His commitment to both civic and faith based activities speak to his dedication to his community beyond that normally associated with the architectural profession.“ Anthony J. “Tony” Costello, FAIA – Irving Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Architecture, Ball State University, Principal, Costello & Associates “He is tirelessly working to engage the Young Architects Forum with other AIA groups, including the Emerging Professional Committee, National Board, Committee on Design, and the College of Fellows. As the Ohio Valley Regional Director and 2012-13 AIA National Vice President, I am thrilled that Adam recognizes the importance of and is working to connect young architects with all facets of AIA. Together, we will be stronger. I also see Adam mentoring young professionals in his professional practice and AIA work. He is an example for young architects and is deserving of this recognition” Debra S. Kunce, FAIA, LEED, AP – Schmidt Associates “I believe Adam’s focus, throughout his YAF participation, on the mentoring of our younger Architects and emerging professionals is vital to the growth of the profession. Adam’s significant role in this effort over the past five years has energized many younger Architects to engage with their professional organization. Most importantly, Adam volunteers his time and energy to others, not for self recognition or reward, but for the love of the profession of Architecture. There is no doubt that Adam Palmer will be a leader and servant to his peers, the AIA and the profession of Architecture for many, many more years.” Scott C. Veazey, AIA – President/Chair of the Board, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, VPS Architecture “I have had the pleasure of knowing Adam Palmer since the summer of 1999 when, as a fresh faced intern from Ball State University, I interviewed with The Estopinal Group for a seven month internship. During his tenure at TEG he was a key component in attending Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning job fairs to recruit potential interns to the firm. From my very first day Adam showed interest in my development as a young professional in the office as well as personally outside of the office. During my internship Adam was always very friendly and approachable and made himself available for questions and discussion on any topic including, but not limited to, detailing, design, marketing, to health care design. After ten plus years in the profession I am now proud to call Adam not only a mentor and friend, but a peer and colleague in this wonderful profession of architecture.” Kyle A. Wilson, AIA, LEED AP - Senior Associate – Architecture, The Estopinal Group LLC “Mr. Palmer is an extremely competent, dedicated and effective professional whose performance as project manager on the IPS CIP program has been exemplary. His professionalism is evidenced by his management of the entire design process. He ensures standards are met in all phases of the development and execution of the renovation project. He reviews each stage of design with the owner to ensure all items of scope are included and developed to meet the Owner’s criteria. In addition, he meets with school leaders to determine unique educational requirements and ensures those are included in the renovation plans. Mr. Palmer is also responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the LEED certification process on each of his projects are documented and submitted in a timely manner.” Steve Young – Chief, Facilities Management, Indianapolis Public Schools “He sees the big picture but also understands that achieving a grand vision requires attention to detail, the ability to communicate ideas and the skill to collaborate effectively with stakeholders. The legacy of his YAF service may well be the establishment of a cohesive vision for the future of YAF that enhances AIA’s value to emerging professionals and, in turn, reinforces the value of emerging professionals to AIA.” Janet D. JURY COMMENTS

"His work has elevated the stature of our profession and has made a meaningful impact on the next generation of leaders. His strong voice for professionalism, activism, and balance, has helped him reach and inspire other young professionals to achieve and to serve. His volunteerism truly shows the depth of his leadership qualities."

BIO Jon has consistently and enthusiastically contributed to improving the practice of architecture for young architects in Washington DC and beyond. He founded the Emerging Architects Committee of the Chapter, a highly successful outreach program for young members. Under his leadership, the committee has organized mentoring workshops, collaborated with other organizations for networking opportunities, and created a lecture series specifically targeted to the interests of Young Architects. As a result of his success, Jon was asked to serve as MidAtlantic Regional Liaison to the Young Architects Forum. In this capacity he collaborated with other components on a regional and national level through articles in newsletters, communication with chapters, and attendance at semiannual regional meetings where he spear-headed support for amending the bylaws to make the YAF Regional Liaison an official position on the Mid-Atlantic Board. Jon has also shown exceptional leadership on behalf of young architects on the AIA | DC Board of Directors. He has been the Board Secretary, Treasurer, and President-Elect. He is serving as the President of the chapter during the 2012 AIA National Convention in Washington, DC and has been an active committee chair and contributor to its organization and implementation. He will be the public face for AIA | DC during the convention at a national level, a role he has successfully played at Grassroots, and the 2011 National Convention closing general session. Since becoming a Director, the Board has supported many of his initiatives and has become more responsive to this critical and expanding constituency.

Project Architect - Bowie Gridley Architects The third high school in Arlington County to be renovated or replaced, Wakefield High School serves a student population of approximately 1,600 in addition to hosting community events. The 400,000 square foot building provides all new academic and athletic facilities, including two theatres, specialty science labs, a new media center, two gymnasiums and a natatorium complex. When completed, Wakefield High School will be the greenest school in Arlington County. The design includes rainwater harvesting for reuse in irrigation and toilets, as well as a large geothermal system used to heat and cool the building. Solar hot water tubes and photovoltaic panels sit on the roof, and a sophisticated daylighting system has been designed to reduce the need for electric lighting. This project is currently tracking for LEED NC 2.2 Gold Certification.

Project Architect/Project Manager - Chatelain Architects, p.c. Originally begun as a planning project, Asia Trail developed into new outdoor yards and indoor holding facilities for seven species of mammals and amphibians. While not attempting LEED certification, the National Zoo sought to be as environmentally-sensitive as possible to underscore its core mission of conservation. Buildings include solar hot water heating systems, green roofs, passive ventilation, and daylighting. Finishes along the visitor path include FSC-certified wood, natural bamboo, and cor-ten steel. The Zoo saw sustainability as part of the project’s mission, and as such used the new complex as a tool to teach the visiting public about green design and how to be better stewards of the earth. The project received numerous awards including the 2006 AIA|DC Presidential Citation for Sustainable Design.

AIA|DC Mentoring Workshop - 2007-present

102

Founder, Moderator Facing a need in the local architecture community, Jonathan began to bring together interns and Young Architects to discuss issues important to those on the path to licensure. On the last Wednesday of ten months each year, the AIA|DC Mentoring Workshop meets at firms around the city and tackles issues such as Intern Development Program community service requirements, exam preparation, what to look for in a mentor, and how to apply for licensure with foreign education. Now in its fifth year, the Mentoring Workshop has served over 200 interns and has involved over 30 mentors, all on a volunteer basis. While there is no commitment required to participate, many interns do return regularly as the group has spawned the added benefits of cameraderie and networking among peers. This program was highlighted as a case study at the 2011 AIA Grassroots Conference.

RECOMMENDATIONS “Jon has shown exceptional leadership on behalf of young architects on the AIA | DC Board of Directors. He has been the Board Secretary, Treasurer and is currently the President-Elect. He will be the President of the chapter during the 2012 AIA National Convention in Washington, DC and has been an active committee chair and contributor to its organization and implementation. He will be the public face for AIA | DC during the convention at a national level, a role he has successfully played at Grassroots and the 2011 National Convention closing general session." Yolanda Cole, AIA, LEED AP – President, AIA Washington , DC Mary Fitch, AICP, Hon. AIA – Executive Director, AIA Washington, DC “In 2010, Jon drafted and presented amendments to the region’s bylaws that were passed at the fall meeting, codifying YAF representation as an element of the regional leadership. The approved bylaw amendments also provided for the means to select a new YAF regional director and to provide a stipend for the individual to use to travel to conferences or within the region. The bylaw change cemented the importance of our young architects to our profession and our leadership.” D. Graham Davidson, FAIA – AIA Mid Atlantic Regional Director 2009-2011 “In 2007, Jon took on the position of Emerging Architects Committee Chair for our chapter. He served in this role until 2010 and during that time launched several new programs targeted at professionals at various career stages, including the Mentoring Workshop for interns and the “Architecture Uncensored” lecture series for Young Architects. These lectures address topics critical to the growth of young architects and are actively attended. Our chapter has experienced a noticeable growth in associate level members, due in large part to the new and diverse programs offered through the Emerging Architects Committee. Jon continues to maintain active communication with many of these interns from the workshop and serves as a personal mentor, role model, and counselor.” Steven L. Spurlock, AIA, LEED AP – Principal, Wnuck Sperlock Architecture; AIA|DC President 2010 “Jonathan truly served as a “citizen architect” by helping to shape the community through his design work, but also by influencing other areas as a champion of causes that impact the built environment and the quality of life of others, particularly as we initiated the green building designs and processes. Jon was an outstanding board member in many ways, particularly his interest in seeing that the most deserving families have a fair chance at qualifying to be a first-time homeowner in our program, and that once approved, they be treated fairly and honestly.” Dennis M. Smyth, Habitat for Humanity of Washington, DC “Now in his capacity as 2012 President of the DC Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, he will lead the chapter as the local host for the AIA National Convention in 2012 and will open the doors to a new Downtown District Architecture Center which seeks to both educate and celebrate architecture throughout the District of Columbia. These outstanding achievements clearly demonstrate his sensitivity and commitment to the built environment.” Nancy L. Skinkle, AIA, LEED AP, Director of Facilities Planning and Programming – Architect of the Capitol “When he ran AIA|DC’s mentoring program, events were frequent and substantive. Many were ones that he himself organized and/or presented or moderated. His professional work has been with excellent firms, where he has generally served as a project manager – his interpersonal and managerial skills reflecting his interest in service rather than the spotlight. By intent or circumstance, many of the projects on which he has worked are very public in nature, including schools and zoos. His attitude regarding service also extends to stewardship of the environment including managing multiple LEED®-rated projects. His early completion of architectural licensure and LEED® accreditation only three years after graduation, at a time when many take the slow boat to licensure, say much about his attitude.” Barry D. Yatt, FAIA, CSI

Architecture Uncensored - Fall 2009-2011

104

AIA|DC Emerging Architects Committee Chair Recognizing the need for programs aimed at recently licensed architects in the Washington, DC area, “Architecture Uncensored” was created as a series of presentations exploring “life after the exam.” In 2009, three architects and an insurance specialist addressed the topics of setting up a practice, finding and holding clients, risk and liability. Presentations were kept informal - more storytelling and interaction than lecture or instruction - and purposely not focused on design. The response from the local emerging architects community was overwhelmingly positive, with more than fifty people attending the opening event and many signing up for the entire series. This program was a recipient of the College of Fellows Emerging Professionals Grant in 2010, funding equipment to create video podcasts of the presentations to be made available to all AIA members.

BRAD TOMECEK, AIA BIO Brad Tomecek, AIA believes that community involvement, education & outreach are integral with his passion for work. He has have been involved in and donated time to many non-profit organizations including the American Institute of Architects, Medicine Horse, Architects and Planners of Boulder, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, State of Colorado Technical Advisory Board, Feed Denver, and the Urban Farm. Brad has found that it is this integration with local efforts that connects him to the important issues of the local community and helps shape the future of Colorado.

JURY COMMENTS

"Brad is the real deal - committed, intelligent and insightful. He believes in creating a dialogue in the classroom, shaping how students participate in consciousness raising activities in the studio exploring new knowledge, building conceptual frameworks, and developing sustainable design strategies. We appreciate his perceptive and profound instruction, engaging our future architects."

Brad relishes the opportunity to help individuals refine their unique approach in the design world. Teaching for him is a sanctuary of unending optimism, exploration, and discussion that reinvigorates and influences his practice. Acting as a guest critic for other instructors allows Brad to participate in a broader cross-section of academic exploration. Through lectures he seeks to inspire others and rally against the status quo. Over the last eight years, one can reflect on Brad's work and see a thread of thoughtful building practices based in explorations of new system technologies. Structural insulated panels, modular off-site prefabrication, shipping containers, insulated concrete forms, and imported German prefabricated eco-panels have become part of the portfolio. Brad finds that these systems have the ability to save time while offering better energy performance and a reduction in waste that usually accompanies traditional building techniques. The reduced building time line can be a huge benefit in a region with challenging weather and especially useful for hard-to-reach sites with short building seasons. A 2011 AIA traveling scholarship award Brad received will allow him to further his research in this area with a trip to selected west coast projects and factories.

Project Architect This urban infill project juxtaposes a tall, slender curved circulation space against a rectangular living space. The tall curved metal wall was a result of bulk plane restrictions and the need to provide privacy from the public decks of the adjacent three-story triplex. This element becomes the focus of the residence both visually and experientially. It acts as sun catcher that brings light down through the house from morning until early afternoon. At night it becomes a glowing, welcoming sail for visitors.

Project Architect The project creates spatial experience from the fracture implied by splayed property lines. The resulting volumetric fissure of the building mass organizes the horizontal circulation and creates the space of the stair cavern. The fracture also serves as a connector between the two entries of the long narrow dwelling, thus remediating the challenging circulation issues of building from street to street with a sectional shift of almost 40′. The unique spatial experience is punctuated by, and allows for, highly varied apprehension of form, light, and shadow.

RECOMMENDATIONS “There are few that posses that rare combination of intellectual aptitude and social acuity that makes for an extraordinary leader, architect and individual; Brad Tomecek, AIA is one of these uncommon people. Mr. Tomecek is an exceptional young man of great intelligence with a passion for teaching, learning and the practice of architecture. Brad is the founder of StudioH:T, a firm that seeks to create buildings, objects, and environments that heighten the senses and celebrate the unique qualities of place. Under Brad’s direction the firm seeks imaginative solutions and innovative projects that allow him to contribute to the local and global communities through design excellence. I can say without hesitation he is the quintessential thinker demonstrating exemplary leadership skills and design superiority.” Richard Licata, FAIA, Western Mountain Regional Director, The American Institute of Architects Professor of Architecture, Truckee Meadows Community College “We can sense special young practitioners. Working with great passion, looking inquisitively at each new situation, they see it with a generational eye different from the current norm. Pushing a boundary, beyond the obvious, they have a desire to solve problems, some lying just below the surface. These young Architects have an insatiable need for involvement in all aspects of our profession, pushing at the edges and keeping architecture relevant in a quickly changing context. Brad Tomecek is one of those young architects who has risen to this level.” Michael Brendle, FAIA, Director of Design, RNL “I was first introduced to Brad as the Jury Chair for the AIA Colorado North Chapter. As a director for the AIA local chapter, he coordinated my visit which gave us a chance to interact on multiple occasions. He was very inquisitive about my process, design approach, practice and architecture in general. I was pleasantly surprised on the night of the gala when I presented the AIA chapter awards. Brad was recognized with three of the eight AIA honor awards presented.” Randy Brown, FAIA, Randy Brown Architects “Brad Tomecek has heightened the academic experience for his students through his inventive process, innovative teaching methods, hands-on site studios and through his published work. He and his firm have elevated the public’s awareness of what ‘good design’ is and can be within a relatively short period of time.” Scott Lindenau, FAIA Design Principal, Studio B architects “Mr. Tomecek’s work is consistently directed not towards the creating of gestural form but instead is concerned with inhabited space, with architecture defined by experience, with the construction of places that house the rituals of daily life. He is also deeply engaged in the act of building, in the exploration of materials, components and systems of construction, an essential but today too-often-ignored aspect of being an architect. “ Robert McCarter, Ruth and Norman Moore Professor of Architecture, Washington Univ. in St.Louis “Brad is a dedicated and talented teacher. Despite his busy professional commitments, he makes time to share his valuable experience and insights with our students. We could not deliver the high level of architectural design education without talented architects such as Brad. His professional portfolio is impressive – Brad leads by example. In this manner, he contributes to the future of the profession through the students. It is no surprise to learn that he is highly regarded by the students.” Taisto H. Young Architects Award 2012

NORMAN L. KOONCE, FAIA 2011 Vice Chancellor

WILLIAM J. STANLEY, FAIA 2011 Bursar

MCLEAN, VA

STANLEY LOVE-STANLEY, PC ATLANTA

Norman Koonce’s fervor for joining others to help advance the architecture profession became a reality in 1961 when he became a founding partner of a Louisiana architecture firm. That commitment, he believes, was formally acknowledged by his elevation to the AIA College of Fellows in 1988. One year later, Koonce was invited to become the President and CEO of the American Architectural Foundation. His leadership there for ten years resulted in a 500% increase in revenues, expanding programs such as the Mayor’s Institute on City Design, Accent on Architecture, exhibitions, K-12 education, and a restored Octagon House. Following that, Koonce was selected as the AIA EVP/CEO, a position he held for seven years, solving the Institute’s critical financial condition, achieving significant increases in the Institute’s annual budget and reserves, focusing on AIA Component relationships, and implementing annual strategic planning. After retiring at the end of 2005, Koonce remained active as national cochair of the AIA150 capital campaign. He now focuses on the College of Fellows Executive Committee, seeking a greater understanding of the power of architecture to elevate and enrich the human experience through research. Awards include the 1998 Edward C. Kemper Award, 2000 AIA Louisiana Medal of Honor, 2001 Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Northwestern State University, 2004 Leslie N. Boney Spirit of Fellowship Award, and the LSU College of Art & Design Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005. Norman and his wife, Sue (honorary AIA), are blessed with four daughters and sons-in-law, 12 grandchildren, one granddaughter-in-law, two grandsons-in-law, and two great granddaughters. Of course, they are all beautiful and smart!

William Stanley, III is a fourth generation Atlantan. He was educated at the Georgia Institute of Technology and in 1972 became the first black graduate of its College of Architecture. Upon graduating, Bill continued his internships in New York City and Detroit, Michigan. While interning with Welton Becket Associates and John Portman Associates, he was Senior Designer and Project Manager for several national and international projects. In 1975 he became the youngest African American ever to receive an architectural registration in the South. Bill began his private architectural practice in 1977 with his wife Ivenue LoveStanley, FAIA; over the past 33 years the firm has grown to become one of the largest African-American practices in the country concentrating in architecture, planning, program management, and interior design throughout the U.S. and abroad. Bill is currently registered in 5 southern states. He has lectured, served as a studio critic, jury member, and professional critic for numerous schools across the country, Europe, and Africa; his firm was selected as one of 7 alumni to present the Centennial Lecture at the College of Architecture at GA Tech. Bill is a GSA peer and has been a juror on its Design Excellence Program. Bill is the principal in charge of business development and design and has been responsible for the firm’s 28 awards including: the Agricultural Sciences Building at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College; Lyke House – The Catholic Center at Atlanta University Center; Centennial Place Elementary School; Ebenezer Baptist Church; Dobbs Plaza; Reynolds Cottage at Spelman College; United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta Parking Deck; Youth Art Connection Gallery; The Olympic Aquatic Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology; John Hope Hall Science Research Facility at Morehouse College; the Southwest Family Branch YMCA; Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church; the Herndon Tower at the First Congregational Church UCC; and the Cathedral at Turner Chapel. The firm’s designs have been featured in many publications as well as a PBS special on American’s Houses of Worship.

Blurred Boundaries

On a leisurely Friday afternoon as soon as I entered the exhibit floor of Architecture in the Expanded Field, I saw the connection immediately. Like the examination of dream vs. imaginary vs. drugged state of mind in the 2010 science fiction Inception or the 2011 thriller Limitless, my brain worked at lightning speed, and in a flash I could see the images of the work of all the AIA 2012 Young Architects Award (YAA) winners dancing in front of my eyes.

She has been named Who’s Who of Las Vegas by In Business and featured in the Las Vegas Business Press.

Inspired by Sculpture in the Expanded Field, an essay by Rosalind Krauss published in 1979, the exhibit revisited the blurred boundaries questioned by Krauss between sculpture, landscape and architecture at the time, and extended it to the blurred boundaries in the recent past and presently between architecture, sculpture, interior, and landscape. It was a tetralogue, an inquiry of where one merged into the other, an installation that brought together the principles of all four in the form of a maze of the work of notable architects, artists and designers from all the representative practices. The exhibit pulled me in to enter the maze and get lost in the spatial constructs of various corners and niches. There were moments when I was caught within a tight space and the only way out was to bend down or jump up. It was a sensory exploration that enticed me to touch the translucent panels, yet cautioned me to stay away for its materiality and seemingly weak connections. The lighting of the space, the black backdrop with mapping of the overall concept, and dim sounds of a video installation and visitors’ whispers added to the dreamy nature of the exhibit. It offered a fair platform to the divergent experiments, manipulations, distortions or constructs generated by those exhibited. I have had the privilege of visiting a few well-curated architectural exhibits. What set this exhibit apart from the rest is for its focus on organization of the work and generating a unique spatial experience that gets missed in the exhibits organized in a linear fashion limited to 2-D or relief displays on walls or through models displayed as sculptures. This exhibit blurred the boundaries between architecture, sculpture, interior, and landscape in the way the work was presented, making the four subjects the central theme of design. Interestingly, it became more about the exhibit design than the exhibits. Much of our professional lives have become a blur of what we do, what is expected of us, and everything we are involved in. The coverage of each young architect that won the AIA 2012 Young Architects Award is arranged in the YAA book in a linear fashion similar to a regular architectural exhibit. The story moves from one to the next. Yet when examined closely, one will identify the blurred boundaries of what is architecture and what goes beyond buildings. Here it is not necessarily an exploration of architecture, sculpture, interior, or landscape boundaries, but more of what the definition of traditional architecture is. Some of the winners are involved in community work, others excel in professional outreach, yet others are crossing the national boundaries to make a difference in the lives of people at a much larger scale than a mere building would do. These winners are questioning the role of an architect in our communities, standing tall in a tough economy that forced much of our talent into hopefully temporary exiles to other paths that will evidently make them stronger as they begin returning to the field. These winners portray the highest degree of commitment that is expected of the young architects of today marking the direction of our profession and leading the way for future generations. Join me in congratulating and thanking them.

*The Way Beyond Art: Architecture in the Expanded Field was an exhibition open March 8 to April 7, 2012 at the California College of the Arts, co-curated by Ila Berman and Douglas Burnham with the Architecture Program in collaboration with the CCA Wattis Institute. Visit www.cca.edu for details.

what is the young architects forum?

2012 Yaf ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Young Architects Forum is the voice of architects in the early stages of their career and the catalyst for change within the profession and our communities.

2012 Chair Jennifer Workman, AIA

GOALS OF YAF: To ENCOURAGE professional growth and leadership development among recently licensed architects through interaction and collaboration within the AIA and allied groups. To BUILD a national network and serve as a collective voice for young architects by working to ensure that issues of particular relevance to young architects are appropriately addressed by the Institute.
