What About Your Friends? By Lisa Wilson
TLC (Yes they were a girl group back in
the day) wrote a song called, “What About Your Friends?” Some of the lyrics were, “What about your friends are they gonna be low down Will they ever be around or will they turn their backs on you.” Who are your friends in your life? See, there are a couple of different categories for what we call a friend. The first type of friend is your school friend. You may never see them outside of school, but you hang out with them every day at school. You crack jokes during the class lecture, and you hang out during your breaks. The one thing they lack however is that they don’t know the REAL you. Then there are our friends that we’ve known forever. They know our weaknesses and strengths and quick to point out every flaw we have. They hardly ever build us up. Then there are those people in our lives that really encourage our souls. It sounds cheesy but it’s really true. Where we can talk to them about anything that’s hindering us and they are there to just listen. We can be OURSELVES! How many people know you, I mean really know you. How many “real” friends do you really have? I believe having those people in our lives is very vital to our success as humans. We often hear the mentality I can do everything on my own but really we can’t. No one can. Someone has helped us in one way or another along the way. We just have to stop and remember. Tell us about your involvement with BYOU and how you partnered with them? I believe our flaws and our differences are a part of what make us unique and beautiful. BYOU is a movement that embraces individuality, which is why it was a great fit for me. You have a very talented family! Was your dad always up for the idea of you going into the entertainment industry? Not at first, but when he saw the hours of hard work and dedication I put into my craft without anyone telling me to, he eventually realized that I was really passionate about it. Tell us about your Collaboration with Jacob Latimore and do you guys have a close friendship as well? Jacob is very talented. It was fun collaborating with him, we both work hard yet are always making each other laugh.
Father’s Day is coming up soon, what are five things you admire most about your dad? #1 His perseverance, he’s not one to give up easily. #2 His words of wisdom, he has the best stories. #3 The man has a big heart. He’s not perfect but he taught me what it means to give back & value your family. #4 He taught me to dream big. #5 He’s an awesome dancer. You have such a busy schedule with all the different things you are filled with such as acting, singing, and your clothing line! How do you manage everything? I plan out long-term and short-term goals for myself. I think when you figure out what you really want out of life you spend your time more wisely. I also make sure that I still make time to have fun & dedicate Sunday to God and family. What new projects are you working on right now? I’m working on my album, Passion and two new film projects. The first one is a teen franchise called “Under 21” in which we start filming this summer. And I’ve been training in martial arts for the second project. I’m really excited about doing my first action film. What advice would you give someone that wanted to follow their dreams but were discouraged by others around them? Fight for what you love. It won’t always be easy but it will be worth it in the end. Just remember that everyone who has done something great has been doubted, you’re not alone. Hold on, and focus on the positive things in your life.

NICK MARA Nick Mara has star quality flowing through his veins and shines
bright on every stage where his presence is shown. The teen artist got his start dancing around the house mimicking moves of dance crews he would watch on TV. Now he is the one that young people today are watching trying to mimic his moves. You may have first been introduced to Nick when his dance crew, ICONIC BOYZ, showcased their talent on ABDC (America’s Best Dance Crew). Or perhaps, you happened to browse through YouTube and stumbled upon his videos adding to the million of views he collects. Whatever the case may be, we can guarantee that this artist has made an impression on you. Check out his interview below!
Tell us about your experience being on TV with Mariah Carey, on NBCs Saturday Night Live and ABDC- what did you learned from it all? All were different and amazing experiences for me. ABDC was an unexpected surprise, and a special memory because my love for dance all started from watching recorded episodes of ABDC Season 1. But, there was something very special about being chosen to perform with the legendary, infamous and most accomplished pop-sensation, Mariah Carey. It was a humbling experience. Mariah was there with Randy Jackson who I knew from ABDC, and they both treated me so well at the audition! Such generous people! That was my first audition as an individual and not as a group, and the fact that I was chosen was truly such a big accomplishment that I was very proud of! Saturday Night Live was so much fun. Being on the same stage with two of my favorite comedians Kenan Thompson and Jason Sudeikis was so surreal. Then, it got better when I met Paul McCartney and Martin Short! I realize I am living a dream and I am so thankful for it! So far, all of my experiences have solidified the quote I stand by of “Patience, Practice, Passion and Pride.” It’s been an amazing incredible memorable ride. Who are some of your influences today when it comes to singing and dancing? and incredible dance moves. What goes through your mind when you’re on stage performing? And do you have a routine that you do before hitting the stage? (Rub magic lamp lol?) My most comfortable state of mind is when I am on stage performing. I become entranced in the music and feed off of the energy of the audience. I don’t really have anything routinely specific that I do before performing, but I stretch my arms and legs, breathe in and out and jump right on stage. As a dancer you have to be in good shape! Can you tell us a little about how you stay in shape while being a dancer? Dancing, as with any sport, requires a lot of training. I stay hydrated, with water, Gatorade, or Vitamin Water. I make sure that I eat healthy and train through cardio workouts! My workouts are usually two-three times per week and then I train in dance studios in NYC. You’ve accomplished many dreams! What’s one dream you have today that you wish to accomplish? To become a solo artist! What projects are you working on? I just completed the NRG Tour and am now working with a writing team, and jumping into my vocals much more. I am working in the studio with the producer and the writing team. We vibe well. We listen to the beats and write lyrics to what were hearing. Sessions like that are great. Really allows me to share my creative and artistic side and connect with a song. Eventually, I will be sharing all of my work with everyone, but, all good things take time! Like I’ve said, there is so much good happening, that I can’t wait for everyone to see and hear. I’m excited to finally be able to share my versatility between singing, dancing and acting. Everything is coming to fruition. I’m just letting things fall into place. Not forcing it. outh African rapper, Ficks always listened to various genres of music growing up, but knew he wanted to do music professionally after starting a hip hop group with his childhood friends. Their group Skom Dogs, which they call themselves, is also the name of their record label, Skom Dog Records. Ficks hopes to do more than just inspire, motivate, and entertain his audiences. He plans to educate people globally. Not only does Ficks write lyrics but also composes the beats to his songs as well. When asked who is someone Ficks would love to collab with in the future, Ficks told us without a doubt it would be one of his biggest influences today, Akon. “The brother has a very unique voice, and he has done so many good hip hop hooks in his career. I strongly believe that having him on my track will definitely take my career to the next level. The fact that he is African is just a cherry on top.” Ficks wants to be remembered as someone that inspired and influenced people around the world. inging is nothing new to the Del Oro Music label artist April Diamond. From the age of eight, she has had a love for singing and even joined her church choir. From there, she sang all throughout high school and got her college degree in vocal performance. It was then when she realized how much she wanted pursue music as her career. “When I was in college I knew I wanted to make a career out of my performing. Singing has always given me so much satisfaction. When you do creative things, it seems that only a creative outlet like performing and recording can fulfill that need in you. It’s always been that way for me.” Growing up April listened to a lot of Motown artists, and other greats including Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin. Now some of her influences are Beyonce, Adele and Lady Gaga. This summer April will be releasing her full length album and to keep the anticipation up with her fans, she made a YouTube channel called, “30 days of April,” giving her fans an insight to her music and everyday life. When asked how she wants to be remembered when it’s all done, April concluded, “I don’t know that I really want my career to finish.” April plans to do music for as long as she can while giving back to the community and inspiring children to follow their dreams.

Her powerful voice has landed her gigs opening up for top artists including Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton. If your sound had a personality how would you describe it? It’d be totally amazingly cool! Ok, kidding. It would be original, fun, emotional, creative, thoughtful, and it would get along with different groups of people. =D Many people believe playing sports is more than just playing a sport itself. But it helps them in more areas of their lives like discipline, learning hard work etc...How has music been influential in your life as a whole? I definitely agree with that first statement, as music and sports were a huge part of my life growing up (and still are). Sports have actually helped my drive, focus, and discipline in music! Along with sports, I began taking classical piano lessons at the age of three with the Suzuki method, which is a very disciplined style of teaching using progressive books. Music has helped me in so many ways. It helps me express my emotions. It helps me get through tough times. It creates amazing experiences and memories. It is what moves me. The power of music is incredible and I am always affected by it. How big do you want to get as an artist? Or are you content with where you are right now? I don’t think I’m ever content without growth or direction. It’s not so much how big or famous I want to be but rather being able to have a lifelong career in music doing what I love. I’d love to play around the world and hear people in different cities singing my lyrics from the crowd. Your fan Brian wanted to know where do you get your inspiration to make music? Thanks Brian! My inspiration to make music is the result of different things. It definitely started at home with the way I was raised. Listening to my mom sing in her band or letting my dad DJ and play me his favorite songs was the foundation. Music was always around and it became a source for inspiration in other aspects of my life - sports, faith, etc. My mom used to tell me that songwriting is where the longevity is in the music business. At that point, I had realized the power that music can have on people, including myself, and started writing my own songs. One thing led to another and I couldn’t stop! Of course, other artists inspire me to make music as well. Life experiences are HUGE for me when I write, whether they are mine or observations of others I’ve made. Most of the time, though, my songs are written from my own experiences. Your fan Jake wanted to know what’s your biggest dream? What drives you? Hi Jake! My biggest dream would be to have a lifelong career doing what I love surrounded by the people I love. I want to be able to give back to my parents and family because they have given so much to help make my dream come true. Family and passion for music is what drives me. Not to mention, great support from fans keeps me going! Tell us about your new album high heels and sneakers? The process of making it? What you think of the final result and what you want your fans to get out of listening to this new album! High Heels & Sneakers is by far my biggest project to date and I’m really excited for fans to hear it. I’m really happy with the finished product. The quality of work and time put in to the project exceeded my expectations. I recorded the album in Philadelphia with Dice Raw from The Roots and producer/ arranger Khari Mateen (The Roots, Jill Scott, J*DaVeY). The musicians on the album have played with the best of the best and everything is live. We even used glass bottles, a prayer bowl and a nail file, stomping, clapping, etc. for percussion. The process was just fun! Met great people and created music together - hard not to have fun. I hope High Heels & Sneakers is a record people won’t get tired of listening to and one they can listen through. I hope listeners can connect and relate to the music. With Mother’s Day and Father’s day approaching soon. Tell us about how your mom and or/dad have been influential in your life? Oh man, they’ve been EVERYTHING. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. Not only the obvious of them bringing me into this world, but my parents have been there to pick me up each and every time I can’t pick up myself. They’ve selflessly dedicated countless hours to what’s going on in my life. I hope to pay them back!

Tess’s Favorites: Sneakers or High Heels: Trick question! ;) In all honesty, I’d probably lean towards sneakers and sweats if I could do it all the time. Though sometimes, I just like dressing up and feeling bossy n’ flossy! Candy or Fruit: Candy!!! It’s a love/hate thing. I love candy and hate that it’s not good for me. Picnic date at a park or Date in a fancy Restaurant: I’m not hard to please so no need to get fancy shmancy. Picnic date at a park would be cute! I won’t completely X out the fancy restaurant though ;) Last Question for you! What advice do you have for others striving after a career in music? The music industry is a tough one and you have to be able to accept rejection and bounce back easily. Some of the greatest artists of all time have been rejected more than once (and in general, some of the most successful people have been rejected time and time again). To Study or Not To Study: A Musician’s Perspective

hould musicians go to college? How important is getting an education when it comes to success in the music industry? What do young musicians stand to gain or lose by attending a music college? Are there other options to consider when preparing for careers in music or the arts? In this brief article I will attempt to give some answers and provide perspective to these and other questions. (Continued on next page)
Certainly there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to career preparation. For some people, schooling is a viable option; others may not see it as such. To put it simply, schools are great places to learn and make some connections for the future. If you have earned a degree or diploma, this tells a future prospective employer that you are trainable. Also, you presumably have some specialized skills and knowledge related to your course of study. Some of the people you meet at your college could be important for your future network and work prospects. Other than those (potentially important) aspects, school does not qualify you to be a rock star. School isn’t necessarily the best place to be if you want to be “discovered” by the record companies, the promoters, agents, and your fans. You can learn lots of techniques there to help you do this, but ultimately your fans don’t care where you went to school. They care about your music. So if you want to be a rock star, you might consider just working on creating your music in a location where you have a high probability of getting noticed, while working hard on building your image, social media strategy, making great recordings, putting on entertaining live shows, and building your fan base. These are the kinds of activities that lead to stardom more quickly than sitting in a classroom or a laboratory. Schools cost money, too. You could choose to spend the time and money in different ways, such as making recordings and playing shows. Now, I am not saying you shouldn’t go to school to learn useful (maybe crucial) techniques to help you succeed at the other things I just mentioned. There are some excellent programs that teach everything from stage performance and sound engineering, to social media marketing and how to finance tours. It wouldn’t hurt to have that degree in music business or audio engineering hanging on your wall. But people don’t want to see that at an audition or showcase. They want to hear your stuff. School can mainly help you improve all your skills. If going to school can help you improve the quality of your music, learn the business aspects, and otherwise prepare for your career, it might be a good idea (if you can afford it). But you shouldn’t attend a school with the idea that you will get famous for doing so. Of course, a lot of famous successful people did go to school. Many didn’t have the benefit of an education. Fame and success go together in the music business, but education isn’t always mentioned in that context. Some people are self-educated. What I am saying is that should you decide to attend a school, to do it for only the best reasons: to prepare for your career and to learn useful skills, knowledge and techniques. These things will likely aid in your success. Don’t go to a school to get famous. School is just school, after all. If you want to get famous, get on television. they are, what they have done, or where they come from. Last question, what advice can you offer to other up and coming young artists that want to get into music? Wow this is a great question. I would say to them “ continue to follow your dreams, be true to yourself. Surround yourself with positive people that have you best interest at heart. Build a great team that is behind you and supports you 100% like the team I feel I have. Take the advice and constructive criticism of your management team, producers, writers and record label, it can only help you become a better artist, most of them have been doing this longer then you, but at the same time know that you can ask questions and ask for clarification so that at the end of the day there is no misunderstanding and you are all on the same page, and that the outcome is ultimately a successful career for you.

. What’s new guys? So as you may know the Radio Disney Music Awards happened recently. So many talented artists in one place. I was actually there in attendance. So much fun. I had the opportunity to meet singer, songwriter, Eric Nicolau. Eric was leaving the venue when I spotted him. I called out his name and he turned to me with the biggest smile on his face. Eric walked over to me and I introduced myself to him. I began to tell Eric about the time I saw him on XFactor when I wanted to get a photo with him but we were not allowed to because of tight security. We continued to chat for a bit and took our picture. I thanked Eric for his time and we said good bye. Eric walked about 20ft away when he turned around and said ‘I love you’ and I replied ‘I love you too’. My poor little heart couldn’t handle this. It was the cutest thing to ever happen to me. Celebrities and Family Feuds by Sheila Rene
L
os Angeles Laker, Kobe Bryant, is one of the latest celebrities to be involved in a family feud. His mother, who has access to Memorabilia from Kobe’s childhood, plans to have the items auctioned, against her famous son’s wishes. If she does, she stands to make big bucks from the sale, possibly a quarter of a million. Family feuds are nothing new to celebrities. Shirley Temple, the famous child star, claimed her parents spent most of her earnings. Gary Coleman, TV star of Different Strokes, sued his parents. Eminem, the Rap Star, and his mother got into a lawsuit. And so did Whitney Houston, with her dad. It is reported that Michael Jackson’s siblings may soon have a family feud by contesting Michael’s will.

illie Jae has always been a fan of good music but what really drove him to make it a career and not just a hobby was the desire to make music that can help people get through tough situations. A die hard 2pac fan, Willie Jae hopes to inspire people through his tracks just as he still feels inspired today by 2pac’s music. “I want to inspire people to be positive and I want to make music that can help you get through the day. Some of my favorite records are records that tell a story and are heartfelt, and I aspire to do the same.” Willie Jae has many influences today including some of Hip Hop’s finest such as B.I.G., 50 cent, Jay-z and Treach (Naughty by Nature) who Willie says grew up in the same neighborhood as him. When asked what inspires Willie today, he told us, “Just staying active and involved in the Hip Hop community keeps me inspired, all my records reflect real life. I’m not out talking coke sales because that’s not my life. To say that Stephen Curry is a good shooter would be an understatement. He has become
a new superstar in the NBA beginning after the end of the 2012-2013 season by being the first to set the record for most 3-pointers ever made in a single season. When playoff time hit, he didn’t let his superstar stats fade away but preceded to make it extremely difficult for defenders from the Denver Nuggets with the shots he made in the first round of the playoffs. Stephen Curry shot a 47% overall in the first round with a 42% 3-point percentage. He has established himself as the best shooter in the NBA playoffs by hitting turn around 3-pointers and running jumpers. Curry has been given multiple nicknames since being in the NBA scene, but his most recent popular name is the “Human Torch”. If you want to know why, all you have to do is ask the Denver Nuggets or San Antonio Spurs and I am sure they have a couple reasons why. Firefighters don’t put out fires, they try to contain it and hope that it will burn out. Maybe the Spurs should take note because there is no way to stop Stephen Curry.

J ’ROSE J’Rose is a natural born singer. At the age of seven, J’Rose began to
teach herself how to sing. When she wanted to sing out and be the best at her craft, she began training with singing instructor Aria Johnson. Along with music, J’Rose has a knack for acting and even created her own sitcom show for tween/teens. She is definitely a star in the making and we were happy to get a chance to talk to the young artist about her future projects. Check out her interview below. How did you get the name J’Rose? I combined the first letter of my first name with my middle name and thought it sounded cool and was totally me. When did you first learn how to sing? Who taught you? I began singing around 7 and basically taught myself. When I started writing songs at 8 and wanted to sing out I wanted to be the best I could be and I began taking lessons with the amazing Aria Johnson. We saw on your YouTube channel that you also act? How do you balance between being an actress and singer? Is there one you love more than the other? It’s pretty easy to balance actually, there are so many hours in a day, and I like to take advantage of that. And I definitely love singing more than acting. Singing is my passion, something that I do every chance I get. When I perform my songs, the feeling I get is one of the best feelings in the world.
Who are some of your influences today that help inspire you? I love Billy Joe Armstrong, Ariana Grande, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, P!nk, Cher Lloyd, Little Mix, and so many others. I think the ones who inspire me the most are Carrie Underwood, Ariana Grande, and Miley Cyrus.

“Never Give Up” We know that you perform a lot! Do you still get nervous before you perform? I don’t get nervous really unless there are hundreds of people or somebody I want to impress. But no matter what, I always do my best, have fun, and enjoy the moment. What projects are you working on at the current moment? Any albums/single releasing soon? I’m busy in the studio working with my producer, Brandon Slavinski, producing three songs. We just finished my original single “Wilted Rose” which is set to release June 16. I actually just landed a role on an upcoming show playing an interesting character named Jade, who’s a spiritual and psychic girl. I also created a sitcom show for tweens/teens and I was involved in script writing, casting, producing, I also wrote the title sequence song, sang it and starred in the pilot as well. The editing of my sizzle has just been completed and is ready to pitch to the networks. Your facebook page says you want to be a light in this world? What exactly does that mean to you? It means to shine bright, be true to yourself, follow your dreams, and to be the best you that you can be. I wrote a song called Be True 2 U, and like it says in the title, you should Be True 2 U. No matter what you do, just be true to yourself. ALWAYS. Last question what advice do you have for young up and coming artists today who want to be a singer like you? Never give up. Don’t listen to what anybody else says, haters are gunna hate. Every time you are knocked down, you just have to get back up. You have to take a chance to do what you love. When you get that chance, take it.
