Succeeding In Tough Times

Succeeding in tough times requires using certain universal principles. Unfortunately, we don’t learn these in school. You learn these by playing the “game of life” and learning from people who have used these principles to create vast amounts of wealth. The first thing to remember is that it is not your fault if you are going through a tough time.

FLEA MARKET ∙ Antiques ∙ Collectibles ∙ Furniture ∙ Jewelry ∙ Classic Records

Here are some tools you can use to handle a financial crisis and become wealthy at the same time.

2. Creativity Creativity is using the imagination in a way that, once again, helps you mobilize your resources and navigate tough situations in life. Creativity and humor are related resiliencies. Other helpful forms of creativity may include drawing, listening to music, painting, walking in nature, and meditation. 3. Humor Humor is an offshoot of creativity. Learn not to take yourself or life too seriously! Learn to cultivate your sense of humor, because when you do, it will help you play in the midst of difficulty, shape your reality by offsetting pain, and help you laugh in the face of the absurdity of your pains and troubles. By no means do I mean that you should minimize or pretend that your troubles don’t exist. However, being able to find humor in every situation will help you cope more effectively. 4. Find opportunity in every problem Going through your financial crisis can be challenging. The good news is, when you look back one day you will see the opportunities that came about though this period in your life. At the end, you will come out a much happier, healthier, wiser and wealthier person.

1. Think in the right direction & take initiative Initiative is the ability to take charge of problems, instead of being overwhelmed by them. You must learn that if you are ever going to live long and with significance in this world, you are going to have to accept and embrace adversity as a challenge and opportunity, rather than something to be overwhelmed by. The bigger dreams and goals you have, the more adversity you can expect. It takes a degree of mental toughness and creativity to approach the problems of living in a way that will benefit you the most. • Decide that you are going to handle the situation with great success. • Believe in your decisions. • Start taking action!

Healthy Lifestyle Tip: Metabolism 101 Everyone – no matter your age or physical condition – has the power to increase their metabolism. Simply put, metabolism is the process of breaking down proteins, carbohydrates, and fats to yield the energy your body needs to maintain it. The rate of your metabolism depends on the interaction between the number of calories you consume, the number of calories you burn while eating and exercising, and the calories you burn based on your individual genetic makeup. To simply increase your metabolism (and keep it humming), practice the following habits: Build some brawn. Putting on just 5 to 10 pounds of lean muscle mass will rev up your resting metabolism. Burn, baby, burn. Maximize the calories you burn after exercise by integrating high intensity intervals into your workout. Hit the sack. Skimping on sleep can alter your metabolism!

Fitness Eat often. Each time you eat, you stimulate your metabolism for a short period. Eating every 2 to 3 hours feeds muscle and starves fat. By eating frequently, you reassure your body that you aren’t going to starve; that food will always be available. Eat right. Frequent eating doesn’t mean snacking. Rather than munching mindlessly, make each mini-meal complete with a serving of vegetables and a healthy source of protein like eggs, chicken or nuts. Upping your intake of high-fiber foods like vegetables is one of the best ways to increase your metabolism. Go fish. EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids found only in fish oil may have the power to dramatically boost your metabolism. Keep your cool. Our reliance on modern appliances like cozy heaters and chilly air conditioners may play a part in the size of our waists. Keeping ourselves too comfortable reduces the energy we expend to stay warm in the cold months and cool during the hot months. -Sammy Andrews, 3 Phase Fitness Solutions LLC.

Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park Recognized nationally as one of America’s most intact Civil War battlefields, Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park protects the battle site and interprets the Battle of Prairie Grove, where on December 7, 1862, the Confederate Army of the TransMississippi clashed with the Union Army of the Frontier in a day of fierce fighting resulting in about 2,700 casualties. This marked the last major Civil War engagement in northwest Arkansas. Here you can walk over hallowed ground where history happened along the ridge and in the valley where the heaviest fighting took place. On December 7, 1862, Union and Confederate armies collided along a low ridge on the northern edge of Arkansas’ Boston Mountains. Neither side planned to fight here. Confederate Major General 12 Your Arkansas Hometown Magazine

Thomas C. Hindman was trying to flank a large Union force at nearby Cane Hill and cut them off from reinforcements. Had he succeeded, he would likely have destroyed the divided wings of the Federal Army of the Frontier in detail. Hindman did succeed in stealing a march on Brigadier General James G. Blunt’s divisions at Cane Hill, but he ran head on into Brigadier General Francis J. Herron’s oncoming reinforcements. Determined to fight it out, Hindman put his men into position atop the ridge at Prairie Grove and dared the Federals to come knock him off. After some initial fighting, Hindman pulled his men into a strong defensive position along the commanding ridge at the site of today’s community of Prairie Grove. The open fields and prairie below gave the Southern troops an outstanding

field of fire. With Hindman atop the ridge and blocking the road from Fayetteville to Cane Hill, Herron deployed his men on the open ground below the east end of the ridge and launched a series of ferocious attacks against the Confederate right flank. Heavy fighting took place around the Bordon House and Orchard as the Federals overran a Southern battery, but were ultimately driven back down the

ridge. The Confederates then surged down the hill in a determined counterattack, but were also driven back.

As Hindman noted, the Battle of Prairie Grove evolved into a fierce stand-up fight: “...There was no place of shelter upon any portion of the field. Wounds were given and deaths inflicted by the enemy’s artillery in the ranks of the reserves as well as in the front rank. During five hours, shell, solid shot, grape and canister, and storms of bullets swept the entire ground. Many gallant officers, and many soldiers equally brave fell dead or wounded, but their comrades stood as firm as iron.” The final action of the day came on the western end of the field, when Confederates swept across open ground in a final effort to shatter the Union lines. Driven back by a storm of shot and shell, they resumed their positions on the ridge and darkness mercifully brought the battle to a close. It was later estimated that as many as 250 men fell in the yards of the Borden House. The battle for the Confederate right flank was bloody but as the fighting wound down, Hindman’s men still held their position on the ridge. The battle raged back and forth for hours, with both armies making attacks and being driven back. The last action finally took place near dark when Confederate troops swept down from the ridge against Blunt’s men, but were forced back by terrific Union fire. Although the fighting itself ended in a draw, Hindman knew that he could not hope to prevail if the battle resumed the next morning. His men were exhausted and on

the verge of starvation. His ammunition was nearly gone and he knew the Federal force was too strong to overwhelm. Consequently, even though the day ended with the Confederates holding the ground they had occupied when the battle started, Hindman decided to withdraw during the night. His army was on its way back over the Boston Mountains before the Federals knew the battle was over. Much of the site of the Battle of Prairie Grove, where one of the bloodiest battles ever fought west of the Mississippi took place, is now preserved at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. Located on Highway 62 in Prairie Grove, Arkansas, the park features walking trails through key battle areas, a driving tour, historic structures, picnic areas and more.

Things to do: Geocache Tour: Enjoy this self-guided, 15-point virtual cache tour of the park grounds. Total walking distance is just over one mile. This tour may take 45 minutes to two hours to complete, depending on your experience level with geocaching. The first point coordinates are N 35° 58.988, W 094° 18.631. Driving Tour (self-guided): Explore the Prairie Grove grounds from your vehicle during a six-mile driving tour. You may opt to rent or purchase an audio tour on compact disc. The 55-minute CD leads you through 14 stops along the tour. It contains a narrator providing a description of events, and directions to each stop which are also marked by signs. Other voices reading material from historical papers such as letters represent soldiers or settlers who lived through the battle. Contact the

park visitor center for details. Battlefield Guided Walking Tour: Take a walk along the Prairie Grove ridge from the Latta Barn to the Borden House, where the heaviest local fighting occurred during the Civil War. A guide will offer details of the conflict, point out where significant events happened, and answer questions along the way. Daily tours start at Hindman Hall at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and last approximately one hour. You may also opt to take a self-guided walking or driving tour. Historic House Guided Tour: Every day that the park is open, you can enjoy a guided tour through the historic Morrow and Latta houses. Tours leave Hindman Hall at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Morrow House was a Confederate headquarters prior to the Civil War battles of Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove. The Latta House belonged to John and Jane Latta, who arrived in Arkansas Territory in 1834 and raised 12 children. Confederate History Weekend will also be taking place on May 3, 2014 Activities during this weekend include camp life and other living history demonstrations throughout the weekend at various times and locations. Visitors are encouraged to wander the grounds and talk with the reenactors.

THE WORLD FAMOUS

Arkansas Quartz Crystals T

he most common stone on the planet is only found in very few locations – one being Arkansas. Why Arkansas? While there are several different ways that mountains are created, the Ouachita Mountain Range in Arkansas was created during a collision with the South American plate in the late Carboniferous and early Permian age and consists of sedimentary rocks that have been folded to form mountains. In many cases, a solution rich in silicon and oxygen fills in the crevasses and cracks. The silicon and oxygen atoms join, and the resulting molecules start creating quartz crystal. Given enough room in the crevasses and cracks, the crystals grow into points all along the walls of these spaces. The Ouachita Mountains that extend from Eastern Oklahoma to Central Arkansas are one of the most important sources of quartz crystals. They have produced some of the most splendid crystals, rivaled only by Brazil and Madagascar. Arkansas is also the only place where large-scale mines are run for the sole purpose to extract rock crystals. Most of these mines are registered in Montgomery County (Mount Ida), and a few mines are located in neighboring Garland and Saline Counties. These crystals from Arkansas have a few typical properties that help to distinguish them from similar stones from Brazil or Madagascar. • The crystals are perfectly colorless if clear unless they carry inclusions of colored minerals. • In particular in the Mount Ida area, the prism faces are shiny and generally show a fine and even striation. Irregularities are uncommon. Quartz crystals found in the eastern part of the Ouachita Mountains are different in that respect and may be more difficult to distinguish from Brazilian specimen. • Growth pits and etch structures on the

prism faces, as they are commonly seen in Brazilian specimen, are mostly absent.

There are many traditional uses of quartz. Natural quartz crystal has evoked many questions because of the mysteries about the origin and purpose. Since no one could explain the unknown, human beings imagined all kinds of possibilities that evolved into beliefs. Because of it’s exquisite beauty, it was only natural to assign sacred or spiritual significance to the crystals. The Japanese believed quartz formed from the breath of a white dragon and regarded it as representing perfection. Australian Aborigines used quartz in rain rituals and clear crystals formed into spheres have been used as crystal balls to predict the future since the Middle Ages. American Indians, Tibetan monks, druid priests and many other groups also proclaimed the sacred power of crystal. Most of the beliefs surrounding crystal involve its energy properties. Crystals are piezoelectric, simply meaning that when crystal is squeezed, it puts off a small bit of electricity. If you slice the crystal at certain angles and then squeeze it, it pulses at different frequencies. Quartz is referred to as a “power stone”, believed to enhance energy by absorbing, storing, amplifying, balancing, and focusing. Because it directs and amplifies energy, it is said to be extremely beneficial for dispelling negative energy, enhancing spiritual growth and

wisdom, increasing creativity, and retaining information. From a spiritual standpoint, crystal is believed to strengthen all the things in you that are positive and help put away things that cause you fear or anger. It is said that these can make it easier to take steps toward personal growth. In order to “use” a quartz crystal to strengthen your energies, all you have to do is keep it with you or close to where you spend time. You don’t need to do anything special to the crystal in order to experience the benefits. Quartz mining was also considered as essential mining industry during World War II because of the need for oscillator grade quartz in military communications equipment. During that time, some of the most famous quartz mining occurred on Fisher Mountain in the Mt. Ida area. The Fisher Mountain mine was the only underground quartz mine in the Ouachita Mountains. If you are now wondering where you can find your own crystals, there are plenty of places in the Ouachita National Forest that are open to the public. The crystal mining areas are open pit and look very much like strip mines. You can dig crystal for free or pay a small fee to dig at privately owned mining claims. Crystal is found almost everywhere you see white quartz rock on the ground.
