CLINTON MCDONALD “Iron Sharpens Iron” Football Camp Fortitude through Family and Friends!

The “Iron Sharpens Iron” Clinton McDonald Football Camp was held at Jacksonville’s Dupree Park on June 19. Twenty-three brave, bold, and valiant young men stepped onto the field to receive intense one-on-one training by some of the finest NFL players. The camp leaders included Michael Johnson of the Cincinnati Bengals, Demetrius Harris of the Kansas City Chiefs, Abraham Holloway, former University of Memphis football player and athletic trainer, and Clinton McDonald of the Seattle Seahawks. “Each drill represents integrity, character, hard work, and dedication”, said Clinton McDonald. The camp allowed NFL players to dedicate a lot of individual time to each camper, giving these local children a once in a lifetime experience. Born and raised in Jacksonville, Clinton McDonald has always been highly involved with his community. Every summer while Clinton and his brothers, Cleyton and Cleyardis, were growing up, they would utilize their Jacksonville Boy and Girls Club memberships to develop their athletic skills, participate in the Nixon Library Reading Program, golf, and attend local ballgames. After the camp was over, each camper proudly received their tee shirt and award. Following autographs and pictures, the campers and their families enjoyed lunches provided by First

Arkansas Bank & Trust. Mr. Wolford of FAB&T expressed, “This camp was the highlight of the year! We can’t wait to do more next year. This is a great thing Clinton is doing by giving back to our community.” Everyone who came out, left with a different mindset and pride for the community of Jacksonville. It was truly like an old fashioned gathering of friends and family and the first of many football camps to come. All proceeds from the camp were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Jacksonville, Arkansas. Clinton states, “To whom much is given, much is required! The whole idea for me to do the camp is to give back to the community that raised me.” Clinton would like to thank ALL the campers that came out ready to learn. He also wants to send thanks to: Jacksonville Parks & Recreation, Dupree Park, Jacksonville Boys & Girls Club, First Arkansas Bank & Trust, Ms. Theresa Watson, Mr. Richards, Power 92, 103 The Buzz, and Fox 16 News. He also appreciates Demetrius Harris, Abraham Holloway, and Michael Johnson for bringing their expertise to the field. Last but not least, Clinton would like to thank his family: Mr. and Mrs. Larry and Bonnie McDonald, Cleyardis McDonaldAmaker, Cleyton, Caleb, Courtland, and Candise McDonald. Thank you Dominique McGrudder and Javar Rochester for helping out with all the coordination, administrative needs, and media.

T

he Little Rock Zoo is located in the heart of Central Arkansas in War Memorial Park. The Little Rock Zoo was founded in 1926 with just two animals; an abandoned timber wolf and a circus-trained bear. Soon after, the Arkansas Democrat began a public campaign for the zoo and bought three buffalo with funds raised. The public donated small animals, while others were donated through the help of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. The Zoo is presently home to more than 725 animals representing over 200 species, and covering an area of 33 acres. The Zoo is home to many animals and most of them are spread out throughout the zoo into four zones - North, South, East, and West. Each zone is specific to the animals environment, species, or diet. These exhibits are made to fit the animal’s need to mimic their surrounding environment as effectively as possible to ensure that the animal is comfortable and not stressed. The Little Rock Zoo is not just a place to look at animals. It is also highly involved in conservation efforts. The zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan, which allows zoos to have endangered species so that they can both preserve the species and educate people about those that are endangered. Among the endangered species at the Little Rock Zoo are a Black Rhinoceros, Lowland Gorillas. Siberian Tigers, Red Panda, Siamangs, and Red-ruffed Lemurs. In 1988, the Little Rock Zoo opened the great apes

exhibit welcoming Trudy and her mate, Ollie to be the first gorillas ever exhibited in Arkansas. Trudy was brought from Africa as an infant in 1957 where she resided in the St. Louis and Buffalo Zoo before coming to the Little Rock Zoo. Trudy is the 2nd oldest gorilla in captivity. Today, Trudy is still in excellent health, and now enjoying her “retirement” in the zoo’s smaller gorilla yard, living with her new male companion Brutus. The great ape exhibit is one of the few ape exhibits in the world with all three species of great apes: orangutans, chimpanzees, and gorillas. The Little Rock Zoo has also long been recognized for its big cat, alligator, and elephant exhibits. The zoo recently acquired elephants, Zina and Jewell who were donated to the Zoo by the Ringling Brothers Center for Elephant Conservation. Although the two never traveled with the circus together, they now make their home at the Little Rock Zoo where they spend time together playing in the elephant yard with enrichment items and eating fresh treats. Zina and Jewell are both Asian elephants. Zina being 50 years old and Jewel being 60 years old. The Little Rock Zoo is open every day of the week from 9AM - 5PM Admission is $10 for Adults and $8 for children 12 and under.

d i r d a M New FAULT THE

Are you prepared for an earthquake? After watching the unfortunate events in Japan and Haiti unfold from the comfort of our own homes, most people seem to forget that many parts of the United States are also at risk of experiencing catastrophic earthquakes. While most Americans associate the thought of a large earthquake with the west coast, the site of one of the strongest quakes in the history of the United States happened right here in our own state. The New Madrid fault zone, home of the 1811 and 1812 devastating earthquakes, crosses five state lines and the Mississippi River in at least three places. The zone extends from northeast Arkansas through southeast Missouri and into western Tennessee , western Kentucky, and southern Illinois. From December 16, 1811 through February 7, 1812, a series of earthquakes would shake this part of

area that would be affected if that New Madrid quake does hit is very large and diverse. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (F.E.M.A.) warns that the event could result in the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States causing damage throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and particularly Tennessee. In the event of an earthquake, a 7.7 magnitude or higher would cause severe damage to tens of thousands of structures. This would affect all the transportation systems, water distribution and other vital infrastructures. The earthquake is also expected to result in many thousands of fatalities, with more than 4,000 of those in the Memphis area alone. On February 23, 2013, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake near Trumann, Arkansas (along with the other 58 earthquakes reported this year alone) was a quick reminder that the New Madrid zone is still active. When quakes hit

“Scientists say a BIG earthquake has a 93-98% CHANCE OF ROCKING THE REGION WITHIN THE NEXT 50 YEARS.” the nation and would go down as the strongest series of earthquakes in recorded history. Of the four major quakes during this series, the final one was the greatest. The New Madrid fault zone that zig zags through our region shook so violently that day, that it shifted furniture in Washington D.C. and rang church bells in Boston. This quake even changed the course of the Mississippi River causing it to flow backwards for a brief time. It was the only recorded earthquake in history to have shook half of an entire continent! So what is the possibility the New Madrid fault zone will cause yet another catastrophe? Scientists say a quake on the scale of, or much larger than that seen in Haiti, has a 93-98% chance of rocking the Mississippi Delta region within the next 50 years. While the United States is much more prepared for an earthquake than Haiti was, the

the central United States, they are felt much farther away because the Earth’s crust in the region does not absorb the shock waves the way it does in the Western united States. Here, a large earthquake would be felt 1,200 miles away in Canada. The potential for the New Madrid fault line to cause the most devastating earthquake of our generation (especially in such densely populated areas) has generated much needed research devoted to solely understanding the New Madrid seismic zone. Through research and public awareness, scientists may be able to prevent such losses. Even though earthquakes are natural disasters that are beyond human control, it is wise to be educated and prepared.
