Hi & welcome to our June Issue!! Here we are at the half way point of the year and the start of winter – time is flying! With winter usually comes sniffles and colds in our house. One of my wishes for this year is for our family to eat healthier so we can hopefully build better resistance to nasty bugs that get passed around. We have recipe on page 25 for a Cheats Minestrone, which is perfect for those nights when you race in the door and have a starving tribe to feed - now if only I could get our boys to eat soup!! As the weather gets colder it gets harder to leave the warmth of home but keep in mind the benefits of connecting with nature through all the seasons. You can read a fabulous article about this on page 8 “Embrace All The Seasons”. Even on a wet or overcast day the protection of a rain coat, a change of clothes and a towel to wipe down play equipment helps to show the kids it doesn’t have to be sunny and warm to have fun outdoors! This month we visited the newly upgraded playground at Harborne Reserve in Macleod. The Banyule Council has been busy upgrading a number of local neighbourhood playgrounds and we found this little local park has been a winner for nearby families. You can check out our review on page 10 in “Out and About”. Do you have a park you like to visit that we haven’t been to yet? We would love to hear from you - send us an email or message us through our Facebook page. The next school holidays are just around the corner so if you are looking for something to do you can check out Claydreamers in Eltham, Inflatable World in Bundoora, Chocilo in Ivanhoe, your local library or School Holiday Rescue for some ideas. Some classes book out quickly so don’t leave it too late! As always I hope you enjoy this months magazine and I wish you and your family a fantastic June!

HARBORNE RESERVE PLAYGROUND Crn Harborne St & Kentwood Rd MACLEOD

As part of Banyule Councils Playground Replacement Program for 2018/2019 five spaces throughout Banyule were chosen to be upgraded due to their equipment coming to an end of their functional life. They were identified as being local playspaces and were designed to respond to the needs of locals. Ollie and I went to visit one that was close to our home one afternoon after school. For a small neighbourhood park it was a buzz with a number of families chatting whilst the kids were all playing. The main structure has 2 slides with one that’s lower for toddlers, platforms and a ladder to climb to the top, a rock climbing wall, monkey bars and a

10

cute little shop window underneath. The space also consists of an animal rocker, spring see saw, a set of swings with one toddler seat and a big basket swing that was very popular with the kids who took turns jumping on and pushing each other. There are large trees that offer shade during the summer months, a drinking tap and a table with wooden seats that are great for having a snack or rest. I was chatting with some lovely locals and they told me that the upgrade had brought about more families to the park. This was all while Ollie happily played with the other kids as if they had known each other forever - as children in parks do!
