Editors Notice Board
Welcome to the June edition of Your Child in Whittlesea! It has been heartwarming to see the welcome that ‘Your Child in Whittlesea’ has received in our community. Many of our readers, local health professionals, business owners, council members and community leaders have expressed their support for the fundamental purposes of ‘Your Child’, as well as appreciation for the overall quality of the publication. Thank you for making this a true community magazine. I would also like to thank all our inaugural advertisers that were a part of our first issue. Without their support we would never have gotten off the starting blocks! Well, now that winter is at our doorsteps, let’s find ways of still getting outdoors with our kids. Maybe a trip to the snow or maybe just hunting for the last of the Autumn leaves or getting out the rain boots and jumping in some puddles. Every season has its unique wonders if we just can see the world though the eyes of a child. We have some interesting articles in this months issue as well as the regular kids' corner and the community noticeboard. We would love to hear from our readers. If you have an article or story that you would like to share, you can submit it to articles@yourchildin.com.au for consideration. We would like to encourage our kids to write in and share their stories and ideas in our Kids' Corner. We will also be having some competitions and prizes for our younger readers, so keep a watch for details coming soon on the ‘Your Child in Whittlesea’ website or on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/YourChildinWhittlesea. We might even throw in something for the ‘young at heart’ so keep your eyes and ears open for updates. Please remember to shop local and support our advertisers who make it possible for this magazine to be FREE to families like yourselves. Remember to mention that you saw them in 'Your Child in Whittlesea' and thank them for their support!
Thank you for taking Your Child into your home. Become a part of the Your Child in Whittlesea community, please like us on Facebook.

Watching too much TV by Dr Nalini Taneja
T
echnology has changed the way we live and has provided us with many modern amenities. Television has changed our lifestyle. Our children are spending more and more time in front of the television and it has becomes the primary source of entertainment. That has detrimental effects on their health and well-being. Studies show that long periods of television may hamper development of the pre-frontal cortex -- the area of the brain responsible for planning; organizing and sequencing behavior for self-control, moral judgment and attention. There are studies that confirm that children who watch too much television have trouble paying attention and have language difficulties. A shocking study from child experts at the Université de Montréal, the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Center and the University of Michigan, published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, has found that television exposure at age two forecasts negative consequences for kids, ranging from poor school adjustment to u n h e a l t hy h a b i t s . A c c o rd i n g t o t h e investigation, watching too much TV as toddlers later forecasted a seven percent decrease in classroom engagement, a six percent decrease in math achievement (with no harmful effects on later reading), a nine percent decrease in general physical activity, 10 percent peak in snacks intake among other things.. Another effect that watching television has had is it has made all of us very inactive. Children who watch too much television are at risk of becoming obese and overweight. Watching television considerably reduces physical activity and promotes unhealthy snacking habits. Dr. Hu 10
of the Harvard School of Public Health has reported in the Journal of American Medical Association that watching too much television is associated with increases in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart problems. Children seem to be getting addicted to television watching and with new gadgets like IPads this trend is here to stay. It is important as parents and well wishers of the future generation that we should look into ways to manage the amount of time our kids spend in front of the television. Parents can protect their children by monitoring the kind of programs their children watch and the time they spend watching television. Children should be encouraged to watch programs that are related to their studies or the ones that enhance their knowledge base. Home work time and play time should be non-negotiable. Parents should engage in activities which foster the behavioral development of children. Parents need to explain to their children that television is for occasional viewing and should first and foremost practice the same so that children follow by example and not instruction. Dr Nalini Taneja s a teacher, consultant and a motivational speaker. Her motto in life is, “When you know better, you do better”
