Books for your baby Never too young to start
Why read to baby? Because baby associates your voice with warmth, comfort, and security. Reading has a calming effect on a restless baby, and baby is entertained. Babies make an association between reading and being held and the pleasure of being held transfers to the desire to be read to. This helps baby learn to listen and grow up ready to read Babies who are read to will begin imitating sounds and words. Hearing English (or any other language) will help babies learn that language. Plus, it’s fun to read to a baby! So out of the hundreds of books available for babies, where do you start? There are so many choices, and there are no bad choices. The important thing is to read regularly. Things you should look for in books for your baby: • Bright colours with plenty of contrast • Familiar topics – food, getting dressed, things around the home, cars and trucks, toys and animals • Rhyme, rhythm and repetition • Touch-and-feel books with different textures to explore • Flaps and holes (Make sure they are sturdy) • Nursery rhymes, finger rhymes and other singing rhymes • Photos of babies and other people
