Editors Noticeboard Dear Reader Welcome to our first issue for the year, as Your Child in Banyule & Nillumbik celebrates seven years of publication this month! Wow, how time flies! We are thankful to you, our readers, for picking up our magazine and taking us into your homes, your positive feedback and support is greatly appreciated. It seems like we barely bid farewell to the end of a school year and the start of another school year begins. Back to school is always a big transition – the morning rush, the homework, the return to a routine can all be extremely stressful for both children and parents. If your child is starting school this year, you may be approaching this major milestone with conflicting emotions. You’re probably excited and at the same time, you may feel a little sad that your baby is venturing out into the big world without you. These emotions are normal, just relax and enjoy this experience with your child. In this month’s issue we have some fabulous back to school tips, how to keep healthy and active and suggestions on preparing your garden for the summer. We also have some quick and simple ways on how to reconnect with your partner this Valentine’s Day and for the kids we have a back to school maze in our Kids Corner on page 28. Life skills, fitness and friendships Calisthenics is one of the fastest growing artistic sports unique to Australia. folk and modern dance. When Greensborough Mum, Marilena Mead was looking to find an after school activity for her two daughters then aged 6 and 4 years, three words caught her attention. Fun – Fitness – Friendship. The three words headed an advertisement for a local Calisthenics Club. Marilena had absolutely no idea what Calisthenics was, but without hesitation she rang the number listed on the advertisement for Janelle Calisthenics College. That phone call took place nine years ago, and Marilena and her two daughters have never looked back. Calisthenics is one of the fastest growing artistic sports unique to Australia. Children of all ages thrive on the variety and challenges offered in the many facets of Calisthenics regardless of their experience or ability – a combination of controlled exercises and gymnastics, apparatus, singing, simplified ballet, 16

Marilena and her husband, Adrian, consider giving their daughters the opportunity to be involved in a Calisthenics Team as “one of the best decisions we’ve made”, and in particular Janelle Calisthenics College has become “like our extended family”. Having been established in Greensborough for over 40 years, many past students have returned with their children as a testament to the valuable life skills they themselves attained. The class is now experiencing a 3rd generation of returning families as a result.
