$50 OFF YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY PACKAGE

Hi & welcome to our April Issue!! OMG it’s nearly that time of year when we get to over indulge in chocolate - but only because we don’t want the kids to eat anymore - am I right?! The excitement of the impending visit from the Easter bunny is contagious in our house as Ollie gibbers away asking when is he coming, how many more sleeps, will he be too frightened by Louie our dog and not come. The conversations are gorgeous! Our morning tradition is a hunt outside in the garden, each with a basket and squeals of “I found one” with each discovery and a trail of colour foil as the consumption begins immediately! We have a competition to win a fantastic Easter hamper from Chocilo Melbourne in North Ivanhoe - so jump onto our Facebook page and make sure you enter! Chocilo have some beautiful hampers for Easter and treats in store and on line. They are also running chocolate workshops over the school holidays for something fun and different for the kids to do. There are some great local activities this month with both Easter and the 1st Term break. Check out our “What's On” for a list of fun things happening in the area. There’s the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Diamond Creek which alway a popular day and another Egg Hunt at Greensborough Plaza. If you want some ideas of what to do with the kids over the holidays you can check out School Holiday Rescue for some ideas on where to book them or what to go and see. And to honour ANZAC day at the end of the month we have a lovely poem on page 22 “Grandpa - What did you do in the War?” We also have a list of all the ANZAC day services and marches for Banyule & Nillumbik listed on page 23. Some of the RSL clubs will be having Dawn Services so if this is something you are planning on doing check the listings for the details. I hope you enjoy this issue. Check out our advertisers for something to do, see or buy for you or someone you love. Best wishes for a great month and I hope you have a lovely Easter!

All the World I walk towards the rehearsal room in anticipation of - what? I'm not quite sure what I'm going to find there, or how I will be received. I pause for a moment and take a deep breath, wryly acknowledging to myself that I am nervous! Now that's ironic. Let me put you in the picture. After years of codirecting and choreographing school and youth theatre productions, my daughter has taken over the director reins and roped me in as her assistant. Last year's production of Wonder in Aliceland at Eltham Little Theatre was a resounding success, and this year's production of Seussical the Musical is now well into its final stages of rehearsal, no thanks to me. Early in the rehearsal process I was diagnosed with breast cancer and, facing several months of treatment, had no choice but to take a step back and leave them to get on with it. This visit was my first for 5 weeks, and I had little idea how I would be received or what shape the production would be in. My daughter - the director - is a product of youth theatre herself, and knowing this, I really should have had more faith that everything would be fine. Why? Because if you want your child to grow up with all those 'soft skills' so desired by employers in the 21st century, you can't go wrong by getting them involved in this type of community. People skills, social skills, communication skills, character development, empathy, resilience and a can-do attitude are at the top of the list of successful outcomes for those who can stay the path. And it's not always easy, but isn't that how we develop character? Some kids don't last the journey - they don't get the role they want, they don't have the selfdiscipline to rein themselves in, they're not a team player, they can't take direction, they're overcome by shyness or nerves. But for those

6

who do last the distance, oh boy! You should see them! So, at the point at which I bowed out of rehearsals, 31 young people aged between 10 and 18 were just getting familiar with the music and each other. The jury was still out on what they thought of the director and all the other adults who were suddenly the boss of them three times a week. Trust was still being built - and you can't assume it will be. It's a tricky time. The kids who'd been in the previous production were wary of the newcomers. The newcomers had no idea how they'd be received by the 'oldies'. Some of them had never performed before and didn't know if they could. They were all hoping for fun, but not sure of the boundaries. All hoping to be accepted, but not sure if they would be. All hoping to shine, but not sure if shiny would happen. And if so, how brightly. It's not easy being young.

And the singing? They were working on it. So, I take a deep breath, and enter. The room has been set up as the stage would be, the kids completely absorbed in what they are doing. A wall of sound - fabulous music,

is a Stage!! beautiful singing. Rehearsal is in full flow. Those 'waiting in the wings' are watching quietly, some taking the opportunity to have a quick snack while they can. I'm noticed by one of these, who wordlessly smiles and waves, and before I can catch my breath, the movement ripples round the room and I'm the focus of 25 (as I said, they don't all last the distance) polite, concerned, caring, smiling young faces. How beautiful. Rehearsal stops for just a moment while they fetch me a chair so I can sit at the front and watch, then carry on where they left off. Oh, so much joy! So much discipline! So much teamwork! So much talent! So much skill! So much ownership of their roles, of their characters! So much respect for each other! I'm not ashamed to say it moves me to tears. Gabby, with just a little nod, helping Summer to move exactly in time with the other Bird Girls. Ella, throwing herself into her role with every ounce of her being. The strength and tenderness of Helson's voice, the little team of Whos trying out their own ideas for movement, the subtle knowing glances between kids, amused acknowledgment of mistakes, quiet little injokes, the admiration evidenced by spontaneous clapping from offstage when a moment of greatness sparkles through, the concentration on little Billy's face as he practices his new monkey movements, the moment of stillness after the 'whoosh', the absolute focus from 12 Clovers as they sit, immobile, for several minutes of a song. Not starring, not even identifiable under a layer of green material, but totally aware that without them, the story can't be told, and if they get it wrong, the story will be spoiled.

Out and About

CIVIC DRIVE PLAYGROUND Civic Circuit GREENSBOROUGH

This month we got to visit Nillumbik’s newly completed play space located in Greensborough. I've been watching it's progress for months and was excited to finally review it in my little park critique. As we drove up Ollie’s words were “WOW that looks awesome” and he was right! The design and layout is so inviting and playful and great for the whole family. The main structure is a tower with internal stairs to climb to 1 of 3 slides plus a climbing wall on the outside. Close by is a large wooden structure with climbing rocks leading to the top. There’s also a single flying fox, 4 swings, wooden totem poles, climbing rope, metal poles and drums to make some music and interesting

10

sounds, a sandpit, an in ground spinner that is wheelchair accessible and a concrete snake brightly decorated with hand painted tiles from 1000 local children! Pack a ball for your visit as there is a half basketball court to practice on. This area also doubles as a tiered-seated amphitheatre and there is a community venue that can be hired out to local groups. The area has BBQ’s, tables with bench seats and although not yet shaded I’ve been told the sails have been ordered. With lush green grass it's a perfect place to set up for a picnic too. So while the weather is still good pack a basket and pop down - Ollie promises you won’t be disappointed!

YOU WILL NEED: · Plaster of Paris · Water

Homemade Chalk

· Food Colourings or Powdered Tempera Paint · Moulds · Mixing bowl · Spoon to mix

WHAT TO DO: 1) Add 1/2 cup of Plaster of Paris powder to 1/4 cup water (ra o 2:1). (IMPORTANT: Always add plaster of Paris powder to the water—not the other way around!) 2) COLOUR MAGIC!! Add 6 - 8 drops of food colour or 1 heaped tbsp of powdered tempera paint and mix thoroughly. If you use food colouring the chalks will dry off lighter so it you want bright chalk try using the tempera paint. 3) Make sure you have no lumps. You will need to mix quickly before it starts to thicken! (It should resemble pancake mix. Add some more water if it’s too thick.) 4) Spoon the mixture into your chosen moulds making sure there are no air bubbles and the mould is full. We used Easter egg moulds but you could also use toilet rolls that have been sealed with masking tape on one end. 5) Now comes the hardest part!! WAITING!! It will take at least 24 hours for them to dry - if it's a nice day you could leave them out in the sunshine to help speed it up. Once completely dry pop them out of the moulds and start having fun crea ng some beau ful artwork!!
