Hi & welcome to our April Issue With April comes the first school holidays for the year - how fast did that happen?! I think our 3 boys will be happy to have a break in the routine of the school week. I always seem to have a mixed feeling about it. How do you find the holidays? Are you the type that has planned activities each day or do you love time home, if you’re working - do you take time off or are school holiday programs booked in? For me working from home can have its pros and cons when it comes to school holidays and I find I’m a combination of all of the above! In this months issue we have an article “35 Best Play Ideas For Children” that may help with activities over the break. I find having a list of ideas we can all choose from helps when the B word starts (bored!) The libraries also run some fun sessions for kids and the theme for these holidays is On Safari - you can check out the details on page 3. We have a fun “Eye Spy Car Ride” game in Kids Corner. I’ve used it a few times for trips with Ollie when he hasn’t wanted to leave the house and has been a little difficult. It turns the car trip into a little fun and also stops the nagging for my phone that has started to become more frequent! For more copies you can head to our website. And to honour ANZAC day at the end of the month we have a spin on the ANZAC biscuit with some yummo ANZAC muffins featured “In The Kitchen”. They have been taste tested in our house a few times now and have passed the test each time from my tiny food critics - I hope yours do too! We also have a list of all the ANZAC day services and marches for Banyule & Nillumbik listed on page 31. Some of the RSL clubs will be having Dawn Services so if this is something you are planning on doing check the article for the details. As always I hope you enjoy this months issue and for those with children at school or kindy wishing you a great first term break!

Out and About

KALPARRIN GARDENS Pinehills Drive GREENSBOROUIGH Kalparrin Gardens is a tucked away from the busy streets and is a little gem with lots to offer. It’s one of our favourites parks. Our boys love to combine playing in the playground with adventuring in the natural surrounds that includes the resident ducks. There is a sign asking that the ducks not be fed bread as it can be harmful to them but the ducks are still inquisitive and if you sit quietly they may even come to say hello! The playground is totally fenced and the gate has a child lock to make it extra safe around the water. The main structure resembles a boat and has 2 slides, stairs and ladders to climb, chain bridge

10

and disks to cross plus windows to wave or climb through. There are also swings and to test out balancing skills there is a suspended wobbly surfboard to stand on. Public toilets are located close by. There are seats both inside the playground and by the water for you to sit and relax while your kids explore the area. Bring a scooter or bike with you to take advantage of the gorgeous surrounds or enjoy a stroll around the walking tracks. If you have never been to this park I’m sure will love it and remember to say hello to the ducks!

Labyrinths and World Labyrinth Day Once a year on the first Saturday in May, 'World Labyrinth Day' is celebrated globally. Labyrinth walkers (adults and children) walk the labyrinth in their time zone at 1.00 pm creating a continuous 24 hour global labyrinth walk. Labyrinths and mazes have a fascinating history that can be traced back to ancient times. The terms labyrinth and maze were once used interchangeably, however they are quite different. A labyrinth is a single circuitous pathway which leads to the centre – a resting place before the return journey back, whereas a maze has multiple paths, with one correct path leading to the centre that is hidden amongst many dead ends and junctions.

by Kathleen Toal

Starting at the threshold, as you walk in, let go the cares of the world to empty and quiet the mind, when you reach the centre stop and meditate before returning. To find where labyrinths are located go to: www.labyrinthlocator.com/locate-a-labyrinth In Eltham there is a labyrinth at St Margaret's Anglican Church based on the Chartres Cathedral design. Members of the public are free to walk it anytime.

Labyrinths appear in mythology – one famous Greek myth is that of the fight between Theseus and the Minotaur. In Medieval times many people who were unable to make a physical journey to Jerusalem would walk the labyrinth instead as their pilgrimage. These labyrinths have given inspiration to people walking them from those ancient days to now – a mystical experience. If we look carefully at the natural world around us we can see examples of 'labyrinths' that abound in nature – for example the 'spider's web', water rippling outwards and if we take our thumb print we will also see the 'swirls'. Labyrinths are found across the world indoors and outdoors. Many designs abound, all with a single path to the centre, a resting place, before returning along the path. One of the most famous labyrinths, with eleven circuits, is found at Chartres Cathedral near Paris. Each labyrinth walk is a different experience.

Kathleen has a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) Graduate Diploma of Education (Women's Studies) Diploma in Family Historical Studies. She lives in Eltham with her husband Gary, and they have 3 adult children and 7 grandchildren whom they adore.
