Hi & welcome to our August Issue Are you all back into your school routine? Did you get to enjoy some down time over the holidays? Or do you not having any little people at school or preschool yet? With Ollie being in daycare he doesn't get to take a break from his set days because the weeks just roll around without a term break. It's always so much harder to get him to “kindy” when the older boys are home from school. But we did manage to still fit in a movie, park time, a visit to Werribee Zoo and catch up with friends. Sometimes I feel like I need another week just to catch up from the holidays! Onto this issue and firstly I would like to congratulate the winner of the IBK Winter Model Search 2017 Keira, who's cute face is on our front cover!! I also want to say a huge congratulations and thank you to all families and children that entered the competition. This year IBK Photos charged a small fee for all entries with 100% of this being donated to helpsarah.org a local charity. It looked like everyone had a get time in the studios and it was definitely a very hard choice to pick a winner. This month Urban Grooves Café in Greensborough have sent through a delicious recipe for you to try at home. It's healthy and full of flavour but if cooking isn't for you then just pop into Urban Grooves and you can get this one on their menu. We also have 3 new book reviews thanks to Robinsons Bookshop and another book giveaway. Yay I love a giveaway!! This months book is one for the Mums. It's a story about friendship, laughter and tears set in the top end of Australia. Find out how to win by going to our Facebook page. Ollie and I also got busy with our “Science” and made up a batch of Air Dry Clay. It was super easy to make and I'm sure you probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry. I thought at first we mucked it up but it all come together in the end and is a really nice texture. I found myself playing with small balls of it well after Ollie had finished making presents for Daddy and the boys. There's some excellent articles inside this edition covering different topics that I'm sure you will find interesting. One is by local mum Amanda Marasco who has written a great article on Bush Kinders. It highlights the benefits of outdoor play and why it is becoming so popular. With kids becoming so addicted to screen time outdoor play is happening less and less. Speaking of outdoors, our local Snake Hunter Mark Pelley has written an article “What to do if you see a snake” - it won't be long before the weather starts to warm up and our slithering friends awaken. This is definitely one article you want to pull out and keep. As always I hope you enjoy this months magazine and I wish you a great August. Take care and stay warm!

Out and About
Ivanhoe Park Wamba Road IVANHOE EAST This month Ollie and I headed to Ivanhoe East to check out a playground we have passed in our travels but never stopped to at for a play. From the road the play equipment is brightly coloured making it appealing to little people’s eyes. There are 2 main structures with a range of activities that cater for different abilities. By the end of our time Ollie was quite chuffed he had mastered a few areas he was a little dubious about when we first arrived. The large first structure is more suited to older children or more confident kids while the second is a bit smaller and easier to conquer and climb around for little ones. There is a slide on each structure plus shop windows underneath, firemen poles, steps to climb and a tunnel to scurry through or hide and rest in, a wobbly bridge, climbing walls, balance beams, monkey bars, hanging and climbing disks plus more. Add to this two sets of separate swings with both a toddler and standard seat,

a large family size see saw, animal rockers and a suspended swinging rocker like a rocking horse but suspended above not from below. Although the play space isn’t shaded there’s a shaded area that includes a table and bench seats along with a single BBQ and drinking fountain plus other seating around the area. It also has a half basketball court and the playground sits above a huge football oval so remember to pack some balls if that's what your kids like. There’s some great flat paths which are great for scooters and bikes. Make sure to grab a coffee and pack some snack and enjoy your time playing at the park!!

In The Kitchen
Quinoa
Did you know that quinoa increases four times in size when cooked. So, if you want to end up with 4 cups of cooked quinoa, measure out 1 cup of dry quinoa to cook. If you want 2 cups of cooked quinoa, measure out 1/2 cup of dry quinoa etc. To cook quinoa, use a 2:1 ratio, or 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of dry quinoa. Quinoa should always be rinsed well before cooking. Once rinsed add to a pot with measured water and bring to the boil. Next turn down the heat and pop a lid on top and continue cooking until water is absorbed (10 - 15 minutes) When finished fluff it with a fork and it’s ready to use when cool.

Ingredients 1 cup cooked quinoa (cooled) 1 cup puffed quinoa 2 zucchinis – grated

Grate 2 zucchinis and squeeze out as much excess juice as possible. A colander is an easy way to do it! Whisk together 2 eggs. Add all the ingredients to a large bowl and mix until all combined Form into a round pikelet shape Shallow fry in a pan with olive oil until golden brown And enjoy!!

INGREDIENTS 1/2 Cup Corn Flour 1/2 Cup White PVA Glue 1 Tbs Lemon Juice 2 Tbs Canola Oil (I used Olive Oil & it was fine)
Air Drying Clay
STEPS 1. In a microwave safe bowl add the corn flour and the glue 2. Mix them together until it’s a smooth icing consistency 3. Next add the oil & lemon juice then give it a quick mix 4. Pop in the microwave for 30 seconds 5. Take out & give a quick mix & pop back in for 30 sec. (It gets a little hot so be careful if little people are helping out) (Don’t worry if it looks a little like it has cooked around the edges) 6. After its done take a wooden spoon & mix it around the bowl (it may look a little like cottage cheese but keep mixing until it has a dough like consistency)
7. Remove the clay & place on baking paper dusted with some extra corn flour & gently knead it with until it’s no longer sticky. It should have smooth creamy texture. Have fun creating artwork or gifts that you might like to give to Dad for Father’s Day! It takes around 24 - 48 hours to set. Then you could paint it too. Keep any unused clay in a container to avoid drying out.
