Hi & welcome to our Dec/Jan Issue I can hardly believe as I type this note that it’s our last issue for 2017! The year has seriously flown by. Our holiday to Queensland last month now feels so long ago. We all had such a great (& much needed) break. The slower pace was enjoyed by us all and spending quality time together away from our busy routines was fantastic. Making fun memories was what it was all about - so much so that the boys all want to know when we are going back! But it won’t be long and they will be on school holidays (again!) as we head towards Christmas and the summer holidays. Check out our “What’s On” for dates and times of carols and Christmas events happening in the area. There is also a lovely article about Christmas and family time on page 8. If you are looking for some Christmas baking ideas Ollie and I made some yummo Chocolate Brownies and decorated them like little Christmas trees - check them out on page 27. They didn’t last more than a few hours in our house! They are so so good!! It’s also the time of year that kinder kids are doing or have just completed their school transition. So its well timed that we have another fantastic article written by Amanda Marasca titled “Getting Ready For School” giving some tips and reminders on the preparation over the coming months for the start of the school journey. Prep is such an wonderful year and to see how much they learn in a short time just amazes me. In this issue’s “Kids Corner” we have a cute New Years Resolutions sheet for kids - it's a great one to fill in and keep to look back on in years to come. You could make a few copies and all fill one in, colour the page and keep them with photos from your New Years celebrations. To help celebrate the season we are running a competition to win 1 of 3 Hoyts vouchers - details on how to win are on the opposite page. Plus we have our monthly book giveaway too. Good luck!! DIAMOND VALLEY RAILWAY Eltham Lower Park 570 Main Road ELTHAM Tucked in amongst playgrounds and parklands is the super fun miniature railways. It’s been operating in Eltham since 1961 and is run by a group of very dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers. For just $3 each person (under 2 years old are free) you get to enjoy a trip around the track, winding along to the sound of the clickity clack and passing through tunnels along the way. For a 15 minute ride it's money well spent and it’s loved by all ages - yes its a favourite of mine too! You will most likely have to queue to wait your turn, as it's a popular outing for many, but it builds the excitement as you watch each little train pull past with their smiling and waving passengers. Trains run each Sunday 11am - 5pm, Boxing Day 1pm - 4pm plus every Wednesday in the month of January 1pm - 4pm. Great to note if you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful mid week outing during the holidays. You can also extend your day by visiting either of 2 playgrounds, that are close by. There are walking tracks with some paths leading down to the Yarra River, where you will find an observation deck and bridge. You will also find Natalie’s Pony Rides charging only $12 per ride - they are there whenever the railway is operating to the public. Topping it off are vans selling coffee and ice creams and for $2.50 your can get a sausage in bread from the Rotary run sausage sizzle. Something for everyone! The area is complete with clean & spacious new toilets, picnic areas, covered BBQs with tables and seating. You can even book out areas for celebrations and have your own private train for your guests. Check out their website for more details: www.dvr.com.au Enjoy!!

In The Kitchen Christmas Chocolate Brownies Ingredients · 150 g butter · 275 g (1 1/4cups) caster sugar · 75 g (3/4 cup) cocoa · 2 tsp vanilla extract · 3 eggs · 75 g (1/2 cup) plain flour Instructions 1.
Preheat oven to 160 degrees celsius and line a 20cm square tin with baking paper. Set aside.
2.
Place the butter into a microwavesafe bowl. Heat for 1 minute.
3.
Add the caster sugar and cocoa powder and stir.
4.
Heat in the microwave on 30 second bursts (50% power) until melted and combined - stirring each time.
5.
Allow to cool slightly.
6.
Add the vanilla extract and the eggs and whisk until combined.
7.
Sift the plain flour into the bowl and mix gently.
8.
Pour the brownie mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 30 minutes or until cooked through.
9.
Leave in the tin to cool completely.
