March 2019

Hi & welcome to our March Issue!! I hope you have all had a great start to the school year! We couldn’t have hoped for a better one. Ollie has had a fantastic 1st month and has really embraced the change. Coming from a boy who would cry and cling at daycare and kinder drop off to now waving me off before he is even in the classroom door. Both Cooper and Max are enjoying their new teachers and class too. This will be the only year that they will all be at a school together as next year we start the High School journey with Cooper. I can still remember him in Prep! In this issue we have an article “School Refusal” something that we have experienced in our house that can be difficult to navigate. The author gives some great tips on how to help and why it sometimes happens. I loved “Do What’s Best For Your Family” - how many times have we felt guilty for not doing the right thing when it comes to our family - when in fact what we are doing is the right thing for them but just maybe not for someone else... In Out and About this month I took Ollie on an adventure to Kinglake to the amazing Bollygum Park. We both couldn’t wipe the grins from our faces - the place it so fantastic. I even felt guilty that we didn’t go as a family and the other boys missed out so we are planning another trip soon on a day that the market is on and I promised a lunch at the Kinglake Pub too! This month is also the time for the annual Arty Farty Festival and Twilight Sounds in Heidelberg. Its always a fun weekend. Starting off with concert on the Saturday night and then on Sunday the parade down Burgundy Street leading to the festival and fun at Sills Bend. It's a fun filled weekend not to be missed! I hope you enjoy this issue. Check out our advertisers for something to do, see or buy for you or someone you love.

Out and About

BOLLYGUM PARK

40 Whittlesea-Kinglake Road KINGLAKE In light of the recent 10 year anniversary of Black Saturday I decided to take a drive up the mountain to Kinglake to check out a playground that has long been on our list of places to visit. I honestly could not have been more delighted that I did! I would definitely rate Bollygum Park as one of the best I have ever been to. Built after the devastation of the fires the play space has been based on the theme of the book “Bollygum” by Australia author Garry Fleming. The area is not only inviting and fun it’s also well set out and spacious with lots to keep the kids busy. There are so many options to play on including swings, slides, ladders and stairs plus monkey

bars and sliding bar. Areas to hide in, climb through, dig with you hands or with the digger and make some musical sounds. There are also places for some imaginary play like at the dry creek with the fishing rods or inside Platypus’ House with the built in fireplace. To top it off it even have a skate park! With tables and seating plus lush grass and a covered BBQ area the trip to the park is well worth the stay for a picnic, treat or rest after all the adventuring and playing. The Bollygum Community Market runs on the second Sunday of the month 10am - 2pm (not over winter) with an array of goods sold. It’s certainly the perfect spot for a family fun day!

RAINBOW SPAGHETTI What You Will Need: Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Cooked spaghetti (or any type of pasta) Ziplock bags Food colouring Vegetable oil A large tub or container

What To Do: 1. Rinse cooked pasta with cold water then drain the excess water. 2. Divide pasta into various ziplock bags one bag for each colour of pasta you wish to make. 3. Add a few drops of food colouring to each ziplock bag together with a few drops of vegetable oil. The oil helps to coat the pasta in colour and prevents the pasta from sticking together. 4. Seal the ziplock bags and shake the bags to mix the food colouring with the pasta. 5. Once each bag of pasta has been completely coloured, open the bags and let the pasta sit for 10 to 15 minutes for the colour to be fully absorbed into the pasta. 6. Rinse the pasta in cold water to remove any excess food colouring. Drain the excess water. 7. Place the coloured pasta in a large tub and have fun playing! Can use hands, tongs, scoops, bowls, etc for slimey slippery sensory fun! Thank you to Base Camp Kids for this months fun ac vity!
