Hayden’s dad were able to establish themselves as a formal charity able to register children of all ages as volunteers. “The biggest challenge in having children under 16 years of age as volunteers is to be registered as a formal charity with public liability insurance. With the help of pro bono work from the law firm Arnold Bloch Leibler we were able to navigate through those complexities” said Mr Rujak.

Eltham North siblings Hayden and Stephanie Rujak are champions for homeless people, establishing Hayden's Helping Hands in 2015. Hayden became interested in the issue on a family holiday in the US, where he saw the plight of homeless people firsthand. “I sort of got fed up with what I was seeing, I had had enough and I told mum and dad I wanted to do something to help,” said Hayden. Having returned home, Hayden (then 8) and Stephanie (then 6) looked at volunteering with existing charities but were considered too young to register. So not to be deterred they decided to help as they could themselves with weekly visits to the city, until with the help of mum and 6

Hayden, now almost 12 and Stephanie, 9, have been working to help hundreds of people sleeping rough around Melbourne's CBD and under the rail bridges near Enterprize Park in the city. They have worked over almost 4 years delivering bags of food weekly, in addition to hundreds of blankets/scarves/sleeping bags/beanies, and more than 1,500 clothes and toiletry items. They also create opportunities for people experiencing homelessness to interact on a meaningful and mutually beneficial level with the community, particularly young people, via outreaches and BBQ breakfast. This year they will hold the 4th annual Christmas eve BBQ breakfast for rough sleepers in the city. “I think we have made a difference, helping these people and giving them food and stuff so they can survive” said Stephanie. The family has received generous donations from students and families from local schools and Parishes and the wider

Helping Hands community with nearly 500 followers on Facebook, and Sponsorship from local businesses Hotondo Homes South Morang, Montmorency's Espresso 3094 and Fort Knox Eltham. “Without all this support we would not be able to help as many people”, says Hayden “so we are very grateful”. The charity is now guided by a passionate board of 6 directors and has 20 volunteers, including children, and works not just with rough sleepers but with other charities supporting women fleeing domestic violence and youth struggling to obtain consistent education. They have also helped aboriginal families and children in the NT visiting and handing out children's books and by working with Footy4All to hand out balls and football books. Hayden and Stephanie were fortunate to have won the Pride Of Australia Award in 2016 on the back of two news articles in the local Diamond Valley Leader. They have also been supported in donation collections lead by MP for the state seat of Eltham, Vicki Ward.

projects using Hayden's Helping Hands volunteer support structure. “I have a goal, to one day see no more homeless people in Melbourne”, Hayden said. Mrs Rujak said she was proud of her children's efforts and grateful to the community for supporting them, and hopes that one day with enough awareness no one will need to sleep rough. If you would like to contribute or become a volunteer go to haydenshelpinghands.org, email haydenshelpinghands@gmail.com or go to facebook.com/HaydensHelper

Hayden and Stephanie also raise awareness of the needs of the homeless via visiting local kindergartens and schools, to talk and answer questions. This has created a ripple effect among the young people in the local community, through greater awareness. Many of these children have been drawn to action with fundraising and participating in Hayden's Helping Hands outreaches. Some schools are currently working on starting their own To advertise in Your Child in Banyule & Nillumbik call 0411 459 872

Out and About

MACLEOD PARK Birdwood Avenue MACLEOD The last park for the year is one that we have spent many fun times at. It’s situated just a hop step and jump from Ollie’s kinder and we visit most kinder days! This is most definitely something he is going to miss when he starts school next year! It caters for a range of ages and is really spacious. The main climbing structure has lots to explore and climb on and with 2 slides it makes it easy for littler people to play safely. There is a fireman pole, a flying fox, monkey bars, bridges to cross, spider web and more. The train is another bonus in the space where kids love to hide in the tunnel , look through the coloured circles at the end,

climb over it or role play train drivers. There are 4 swings an animal rocker and a 4 seat spinner - that I use to love when I was younger but now makes me feel sick! Sails give great shade and protection from the sun & there are also 2 sheltered tables plus unsheltered tables and seats, a drinking tap, BBQ, toilets close by and the playground is almost fully fenced. Another great thing to point out is there is a “Little free Library” for everyone to use either whilst there or to take home. With 4 great cafes to choose from across the road its easy to spend a pleasant morning or afternoon while everyone is having fun.

Butternut Snap Ruldoph Chocolate Tartlets Ingredients · · · · ·

250g packet Arnott's Butternut Snap Cookies 65g unsalted butter, chopped 1/3 cup cream 200g milk or dark chocolate, chopped 10 vanilla marshmallows, halved

· · · · ·

2 tablespoons vanilla ready-made frosting 20 Jaffa lollies 20 mini vanilla marshmallows, halved Writing icing Pretzels

Method - Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Place 1 biscuit over each hole of a 12-hole round-

based tartlet tin. Bake for 2-3 minutes or until soft. Remove from oven. Using the back of a spoon, carefully press softened biscuits into mould into a cup shape. Allow to cool then remove from tin and transfer to a plate. Repeat with remaining biscuits.

- Place butter, cream and chocolate in a saucepan over low heat. Stir constantly until melted and smooth (5 - 10 minutes) . Pour into a bowl and refrigerate for 15 minutes or until cool but not fully set. - Fill each biscuit cases with 1 heaped teaspoon of chocolate mixture. Return to the refrigerator for 20-25 minutes, or until they are set. - Now the fun part! Gently press 1 marshmallow half, cut-side down into each tartlet. Next attach 1 Jaffa to each marshmallow with ready-made frosting to make Ruldoph’s nose, then attach 2 mini marshmallow halves above nose, cut-side up, to form eyes. Use a drop of writing icing for the pupils. Cut pretzels in half to make antler shapes and put 2 pretzel pieces above the eyes. Press in slightly to secure. 25 To advertise in Your Child in Banyule & Nillumbik call 0411 459 872
