Editors Notice Board Hello and welcome to our October issue! October is a busy month for our family with 2 birthdays to celebrate. Ollie will be turning 3 at the start of the month and I look at him and think our little surprise baby is getting so big. I want him to stop growing - this is such a beautiful age and the cuddles and loves are endless. Nathan’s birthday is the day before so the search is on for birthday presents and ideas for things to make for gifts. Plus the grand final falls all within the same week and in a house full of boys that is the best weekend of the year!! With all the excitement we are really struggling to get the kids to bed - and it always seems to creep out later when we have the school holidays too. Reading the article “Are Your Children Going To Bed Too Late” on page 12 felt like the pep talk I needed to start getting things back on track. Tired and irritable kids is not fun for anyone! Then after reading “What Can I Use Instead of Bribery” I had another ahh haa moment thinking about how I parent our boys. Yes I am one of those parents with a constant toolbox full of bribes. I think its time for some changes... This month we catch up with Linda Detoma from Claydreamers in Eltham. How amazing would it be to do something that started out as a hobby that you then turned into a business. I think that is the dream for most people. Isn’t the saying “do something you love and you will never work another day in your life”? Linda has certainly ticked that box. You can read about it all on pages 16-17. For our Family Favourites this month I have added a recipe that is only really a new one in our house. On a mission for better health, for all of us, Chia puddings are a new breakfast in our house. Try them out - you might be as surprised as me at how easy they are plus how good you feel starting the day with this ancient grain. I hope you enjoy our latest issue and remember to check out our advertisers as there may be something to do or see or somewhere to go that may interest your family or someone your know! Have a great October and take care!!

. .. h it W p U g in h c t Ca Linda Detoma Claydreamers Eltham Claydreamers is a pottery studio that has been offering quality pottery lessons to the Eltham community and surrounding areas since 1997. They offer gentle, low stress classes, in a comfortable and well equipped studio. Whether you are a complete beginner or want to brush up on techniques, adults can join a class tailored to suit their needs and skills. They cover a range of disciplines including sculpting, hand building, wheelwork, glazing and decorating. Specialised workshops are also on offer - such as coloured clays and glaze workshops. During the school terms, Claydreamers also run after school classes that cater for school aged children and teen. The sessions run for one and a half hours and classes give children a chance to explore their creativity. Other children’s classes include S c h o o l H o l i d ay workshops. These 2 hour workshops are a great introduction to working with clay. Children are guided through a step by a step project and are given the opportunity to experience making a pot on the potters wheel.

We caught up with Linda to find out a little more about the lady behind the all the fun!
Tell us a little about you: I’m a mum to 2 children (now 28 and 26) and I have lived in Eltham for the past 28 years. I have always enjoyed arts. My mum was an artist so I grew up watching her paint and she would encourage us by giving us some paint and canvas to try too. I completed a ceramics & pottery class at the Nillumbik Living and Learning Centre with my Mum close to 23 years, initially as a hobby. Although I am predominantly self taught I have also completed a Diploma in Ceramics at Chisholm Dandenong.
How did your business come about? I established Claydreamers from home in 1997 to run classes and teach the craft to adults and children. At the time my children were only young so it was the perfect work life balance for me. Plus I was getting to do something that I loved.

What do you love most about running your own business: I love being able to work from my studio at home, the flexibility of working for yourself and doing something that I am passionate about.
What does a successful day look like to you: A successful day is when I manage to get some of my own artwork done! My discipline is in fine porcelain. My pieces are made on the potters wheel and are then etched and glazed. The whole process can take up to 8
weeks to complete. I currently have some of my w o r k o n d i s p l ay a n d fo r s a l e i n Warrandyte at the Stonehouse Gallery and in Frankston. And just recently they were being displayed at Bulleen Art & Garden.
What are your favourite local hotspots at the moment: Nillumbik Artist Open Studios is always a highlight of the year. Its coming up on the 19th & 20th then 26th & 27th of November this year. Coffee: The Main CafĂŠ & Zen Den - both in Eltham. Food: Little Drop of Poison which tucked away down a little laneway of Main Street Eltham - they make an amazing carrot sandwich & I love their pumpkin seed cakes! Shopping: Eltham Town shopping precinct.
