November 2017

Hi & welcome to our November Issue Its my favourite time of year! Warmer weather, lots of butterflies and its my birthday month too. We will be heading off to sunny Queensland for our family holiday. We went for the first time last year and loved it so much we booked again as soon as we got home. The photo is from a night out in Brisbane on the Big Wheel - its one of my favourites. I think Ollie is going to love it so much more this year (if that's possible) being that year older and has been telling his teachers about feeding stingrays and that his Dad is going to swim with the sharks! They are all looking forward to time off school and kindy (day care for Ollie) and I’m looking forward to making more happy family memories! Its been a very busy year and it will be nice to have a relax (as much as you can with 3 boys) before the craziness of Christmas is here. As the weather warms up the snakes are coming out in our area and already Mark - The Snake Hunter has been extremely busy catching snakes around family homes and local businesses. On page 6 we have an article “Snake Bite First Aid”. I hoping that no ones has to refer to it but just in case it's a great one to hang onto. Remember if you see a snake leave it alone and call a professional. Its one to remind the kids about too! We also have an article on the “Top 5 Tips For Water Safety Over the Summer Break” on page 12. You can never be too careful around water with children. I remember booking a holiday when we only had Cooper and he was around 2. The travel agent advised us not to book a ground floor apartment close to the pool because if he wandered off without us knowing and fell into the pool we wouldn't hear anything - it's a splash and that's all. It has stayed with me always and makes my tummy drop when I think about it. If your child doesn’t know how to swim or you're looking for a local swim school - JUMP swim school has opened in Bundoora (see page 13 for their ad) Inside there’s our “Kids Corner” where we have some fun with messy play quick sand. We had sand delivered for the kids at home and I had wanted to try this for ages. Ollie loved it - yes it is messy but so much fun! Plus don’t forget to enter our competitions this month - details are on the opposite page and enter via our Facebook page - Good Luck!! And be sure to check out all the fun things happening Festivals and Fetes throughout the mag and in our “Whats On” section. As always I hope you enjoy this months magazine and I wish you a great November.

Out and About

Alistair Knox Park Main Road ELTHAM Perfectly located near 2 coffee shops & the Eltham Library you will all be delighted by what Alistair Knox Park has to offer. Our visits here are always for a minimum of a few hours and all 3 boys enjoy it. The playground is set amongst the parklands & not close enough to Main Road for it to be a safety issue. The layout is spacious & inviting. The main structure has a tunnel, steering wheel, ramp & climbing ladder, rock wall, suspended bridge, wavey slide, monkey bars, rising stepping ladder & wobbly poles with disc to cross. There is a set of 4 swings, 2 with harnesses plus a separate birds nest swing big enough for 2 or 3 kids. A flying fox & a spinning wheel too for those who love being dizzy!! Very clever musical equipment is spotted throughout the space along with wooden animal carvings & metal family sculptures. There’s also plenty of climbing & balancing opportunities with the balance beams plus a huge see-saw big enough for the whole family! The grounds are big enough for a game of hide and seek or a kick of the footy or if your kids are like mine and want an oval to play at then they can venture on down the hill to the large oval. Within walking distance there is also a skate/scooter park too. Pack a treat for the ducks at the wetlands or just stop by to say hello to them as this can be an added bonus to your visit. There are toilets close by & plenty of seats plus tables & even a BBQ if you wanted to make a day of it. With the weather warming up a picnic rug under the shade of one of the trees is a great way to relax after all that playing! Let me know what you think - send us a message on Facebook with some photos of your fun day out at the park! I’m sure you are going to love it!

In The Kitchen BLISS BALLS 3 WAYS

Bliss balls are a great snack, good for lunch boxes or an after school treat. They even make great gifts!! If you find the mixture is sticking to your hands when rolling them put some coconut oil or water on them and this should help. The balls should keep for around a week in a sealed container BUT they don’t last that long at our house!

Raisin Oat Balls Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Chocolate Coconut Balls

10 medjool dates, seeds removed 1/2 cup raisins 1 cup rolled oats 1 tablespoon cacao or cocoa or carob 1/2 teaspoon natural vanilla extract pinch of salt coconut for rolling in

Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

1 packet milk arrowroot biscuits 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1/2 cup desiccated coconut (plus a little extra for rolling the balls in) 1 tin (395g) condensed milk

Crush the biscuits and place into a mixing bowl.

Place the ingredients into a food processor/blender & process until it all sticks together.

Add cocoa and coconut, stir together then add condensed milk.

Roll the mixture into balls and roll in coconut. This can sometimes take a little while and the mixture will be crumbly before it all comes together. Place the chocolate balls on a plate and chill in the fridge for 30 mins. Roll mixture into balls & roll in coconut & place in the fridge to firm up a little.

Oat & Choc Chip Balls Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

4 cups rolled oats 100 grams butter ½ cup honey 2 tsp vanilla extract ¼ tsp Himalayan Pink salt ¾ cup small choc chips

20

Place oats in a medium sized bowl and set aside. Melt the butter and honey in a saucepan until well combined & then add the vanilla & salt - mixing it through Add liquid to the oats and mix well. Now pop in the fridge to cool for 15 minutes. (It helps make it easier to roll the balls and also stops the choc chips from melting) Add in the choc chips and stir through evenly. Roll the mixture into balls & place in the fridge for 1-2 hrs to set.
