Hi & welcome to our June issue Here we are at the half way point of the year and the start of winter – time is flying! With winter usually comes sniffles and colds in our house. One of my wishes for this year is for us to eat healthier so we can hopefully build better resistance to bugs. So I was excited to see the Harvest Bowl recipe on page 20 submitted by Hunter Lane in Rosanna. Now just to get my kids on board! Hunter Lane are also giving away a $50 voucher so head to our Facebook page to see how you can be in the running. June is also time for the Cover Star Winter Model Search run by IBK Photos together with Your Child. We are very excited to again be part of this search. If you would love to see your child on the cover of our August issue check out the details of the opposite page and head to the IBK website register your child now so don't you miss out. This month in “Out and About” Ollie and I spent a lovely morning together at a fantastic playground in Eltham North. And although the weather wasn't fabulous it was still great to get outside and expel some energy that little boys seem to have an abundance of. My only tip would be to pack a towel and a change of clothes as slides and surfaces will most likely be wet. Are you trying to keep the kids entertained without resorting to too much screen time? We have started a new weekly activity at home that Ollie excitedly calls “Science”. One we recently made is Flubbery Rubbery Slime and you can find the recipe in this months “Kids Corner”. It's great for kids of all ages (even mum's) but be warned it will stick in hair – as Ollie found out (ouch!!) We have some interesting articles this month covering a range of topics that I liked reading and hope you do too! “Homeschool, Travel and Nature Play” was definitely one that sparked a curiosity in me – wonder and question “could we do it?” The thoughts are exciting and I am a little envious of the life that Melinda and her family have chosen. As always I hope you enjoy this months magazine and I wish you a great June. Take care and rug up!!

Eltham North Adventure Park The Parade (off Wattletree Road) ELTHAM NORTH On a foggy morning dressed in our boots & jackets Ollie & I traveled out to this amazing playground in Nillumbik. Located in the Eltham North Reserve along the Diamond Creek Trail & amongst the native trees this space is just brilliant. The structure was built to resemble a traditional wool shed & the size is more than generous. Within the shed you’ll find so many activities for all ages & abilities including: steps & stairs (some leading to landings to observe the goings on), balancing beams & logs to scramble over, slides both enclosed & open, tunnels to hide in, a big wooden tractor construction complete with steering wheel & tyres and plenty of room for a hoard of kids.

area - you will need to prearrange access to this swing by contacting the Nillumbik council. The facilities are complete with a BBQ area, covered table and chairs plus many benches scattered through the area, toilets and drinking taps. There are also tracks for riding and walking along and a football oval. If all of this isn't enough then you can walk 120 metres over the bridge and visit Edendale Farm where you can also grab a coffee and maybe a treat!

On the outside there is a climbing rock wall with 2 ropes, fireman pole, monkey bars, a toddler area, see saw & animal rickers, 2 sets of swings & dry creek bed for some kids that love outdoor adventures. There is also a Liberty Swing allowing children in wheelchairs to enjoy the 10

Bush Kindergarten Bush Kinder is incorporated into our child care program to help foster and develop many skill. These outings help develop responsibility for children - for themselves and others. It will encourage early risk-assessment strategies that will ensure that young children start to consider the impact of their actions and of others. In doing so children learn to take on challenges and accept responsibility. Children are able to play in nature, roll down the grassy mounds, balance on fallen trees, get involved in dramatic play, find insects and learn about them. By also finding flora and fauna they are able to learn how these plants live and grow in the environment – the names of plants, their habits and search out different types of birds and sighting of animals! Each child's progression, interest and skills is noted by teachers and this knowledge is used to support each child's learning with the inclusion of Aboriginal history in our local area. A story is told and group discussions take place to enhance the community. The excursions are run by the Kindergarten teacher – Jess and assistant Sam. Much laughter is had by all and there are nuts, feathers and stones being gathered on the outings. The group is in the field for one hour.

Harvest Bowls (AKA Vegan bowls) are a huge craze right now and there are several reasons

why you should jump on the bandwagon if you haven't already done so. Not only are they super healthy, they can be used from any leftover vegetables you have in the fridge and are quick and easy to prepare if your ingredients have been precooked. Your child's favourite vegies can be arranged creatively in a bowl or throw all of the elements on the table and let them create their own unique flavour combinations.

Here are 5 Steps to creating the perfect harvest bowl: Step 1. Pick your Vegies The more colourful the more enticing. Think char grilled corn, red cabbage, broccoli, Dutch carrots, baby beets to name a few and rest them on a bed of salad greens. Step 2. Pick a Complex Carb Think of these as the energy powerhouse of your child's meal. Sweet potato, quinoa, rice and lentils are good go-to ingredients.

perfect for a harvest bowl include olive oil (as well as flax, hemp, and other nut/seed oils), tahini and avocado. Step 5. Pick a Dressing or Sauce Children love to dip their food into something tasty. A dipping sauce or dressing can not only elevate the taste of a harvest bowl, it can create a fun experience for the child and entice them to eat that little bit more. Try hommus, cashew cream or a balsamic glaze.

Step 3. Pick a Protein Protein is important for your child's growth and muscle development and keeps them feeling fuller for much longer. Plant based proteins include tofu, chickpeas, lentils and nuts. Step 4. Pick a Healthy Fat Good fats (unsaturated fats) provide children with energy to help grow and develop. They also help keep our arteries clear and our blood sugar levels in check. Some plant-based sources of fat that are

I hope these 5 Steps will help you to create some fun, flavourful harvest bowls like the one pictured here. Happy harvesting! This month recipe was supplied by Hunter Lane 76 Turnham Avenue Rosanna PH 8529-8142 Coffee - Eats - Catering
