Hi & welcome to our April issue! The first school holidays for 2017 are here - and as I always seem to be saying WOW that time went fast! How do you find the holidays? Are you the type that has planned activities each day or do you love time home, if you’re working - do you take time off or are school holiday programs booked in? For me working from home can have its pros and cons when it come to school holidays and I find I’m a combination of all of the above! Trying to keep the kids busy and entertained can be a struggle, but with Easter this month and Anzac Day too there are some added local activities for more fun! The Annual Diamond Creek Easter Treasure Hunt is on again this year and the Easter Bunny will be there too! Plus information on Anzac Day services and marches can be found on page 21 with a great article on the opposite page “What is Anzac Day”. This month in “Out and About” we visited a great park in Hurtstbridge that you might like to add to your list of things to do on the holidays. You could also take the School Holiday Scavenger Hunt that we have in this months “Kids Corner’. My tip for the scavenger hunt is to make a few copies to have in your bag for when you’re out and about and to even add a few extra items to the list. This has been a great activity with my boys for those times at home when I hear “I’m Bored”. As always I hope you enjoy this months magazine and I wish you and your family a Happy Easter and a great Anzac Day too!

THE PAL SYSTEM: Pathways And Learning Bundoora Secondary College has always had a commitment to individual student pathways. 2017 has seen the introduc on of new learning structures to support personalised learning. This means that (unlike many other models of schooling) students have a real choice in their educa on. Why the change? Around the world, educa on is in a crisis. One quarter of young people do not complete their secondary schooling; classrooms are full of students who are not interested in, or engaging with, the curriculum being delivered; students are entering ter ary studies and employment without the necessary 21st century skills. Our philosophy In a tradi onal schooling model, students have to study all areas of the curriculum, whether interested in those areas or not. It assumes that ‘one size fits all’: that all students will need, and should have, the same knowledge and skills for the future. Addi onally, many ‘elec ve’ subjects such as the arts and physical educa on are o en undervalued in schools and can be given very li le me and resources. Bundoora Secondary College has moved away from this tradi onal view of educa on in an effort to give our students the world class educa on they deserve. Our model gives control back to students by allowing them to choose for themselves the learning areas they wish to focus on. Other than English and Maths, which are compulsory due to their necessity in everyday life, students are free to choose from a broad range of exci ng subjects, run by specialists. We encourage students to choose breadth, as we value many different learning areas and styles. However, our system now allows students to study specific areas more deeply than would otherwise be possible. It also allows them to focus more intensely on par cular skills and concepts, such as wri ng (rather than ‘English’), algebra (rather than ‘Maths’), photography (rather than ‘Art’) or on genre-based areas such as performance poetry, ancient civilisa ons and outdoor recrea on. Mapping and Monitoring Progress Together, PAL teams set challenging learning

goals for 21st century skills and for rigorous academic skills such as quan ta ve reasoning and empirical reasoning. Students and PAL leaders conference together with families on a regular basis to ensure that the individual learning plan is understood and accepted by all. It is also subject to twice-yearly reviews by members of the principal class. Every week, students meet at a designated me with their PAL leader to monitor, reflect on and document their progress in rela on to their learning goals. Once subjects have been chosen, this not the end of the op ons! At BSC, teachers are keen to use student interests as the basis for learning. Many subjects are becoming project-based and the content is nego ated with students, using authen c tasks as the assessments. Assessment of 21st Century Skills Grade Point Average At BSC, the Grade Point Average relates to 21st century skills such as cri cal thinking and problem solving, having a growth mindset and persistence. Students are encouraged to regularly self-reflect on their development of these skills and set new targets for growth every six weeks. Students self-assess using a tool developed collabora vely by BSC teachers called ‘The BSC Great Student’. This tool encourages students to iden fy where their 21st century skills, a tudes and characteris cs lie. Learning behaviours at each level are explicit, so students can easily iden fy what to do to work towards the next level. In this way, they can become increasingly independent and self-driven and understand the value of these skills to their lifelong learning. The Victorian Curriculum determines the basis of the developmental sequence within
each subject offered at BSC from Years 7-10. One of the great strengths of the BSC model is the scope and sequence that is available for each subject, allowing students of mul ple ages to access learning at the appropriate stage for them. They are not locked into age or year level expecta ons and therefore can be sufficiently challenged and supported regardless of where their skills lie on the spectrum. Learning in the senior years The College places a greater emphasis on student pathways than outcomes, suppor ng students to pursue alterna ves to the tradi onal modes of study if this is more suitable. Although we highly value academic excellence, we equally value the development of crea ve, compassionate and caring global ci zens. This school supports students to build on their strengths in order to make their own mark on the future. Students may undertake a VCE subject from Year 8 onwards if they possess the skills and disposi on to study at this level. The College also offers a fully supported VCAL program for those who wish to undertake a voca onal pathway rather than further academic study at the end of their schooling. A number of VET studies and first year university subjects are on offer, as well as the encouragement and support to pursue learning off-campus. Ferguson Park via Graysharps Road HURSTBRIDGE This month we ventured out to beautiful Hurstbridge to a park that I have wanted to visit for a little while. Positioned behind the two kindergartens & nestled amongst the gumtrees,. the smell reminds me of family camping holidays when I was younger. The playground is well set out & offers a lot! On the lefthand side is the main structure that is protected by a huge sunshade. The equipment is made up of monkey bars, tic tac toe, staggered landings, a climbing web, hanging balance steps, a tunnel, a shop window plus a slide and some steering wheels. Over the a little wooden bridge with a rock creek is the single flying fox for all the

thrill seekers! There’s also a set of swings with a birds nest plus 2 swing seats - one for a toddler. Large rock stepping stones are great for balancing skills or a seat for a rest! To the right of the park are 2 enclosed slides side by side on the hill - great for racing up and down. On the day we visited they were being repositioned so we didn’t get to test them out but the little digger at the park was a nice conciliation prize. The space includes a covered picnic area complete table & chairs plus a covered BBQ. The public toilets are a short stroll across the road. Plus plenty of cafes close by for treats and coffee!
