Hi & welcome to our August Issue!! And with what feels like the click of my fingers we’re back into the school routine again. We had a great break and spent a week in Sydney where we agreed it wasn't a great idea to take Louie our Golden Retriever but ended up coming back with a rabbit! My niece’s bunnies had babies that were just too cute (and I’m a sucker for cute fluffy animals) so we now have another family member introducing Gavin the rabbit xoxo He is just beautiful and we all love so so much - even Louie! August is the month for both Book Week & Science Week. You can find some great activities happening at your local library, details can be found on page 17. Plus did you know that the libraries have removed fines for late book returns? You can read why on page 16. Also be sure to have a look at our Whats On page - we have details for the annual Hurstbridge Wattle Festival that you wont want to miss plus other fun things going on. If you’re after a last minute costume for Book Week check out what they have at The Costumery (page 5) - pop into their shop or check them out on line. There are some fantastic articles packed into this months issue covering many topics from budgeting to unsettled babies and how to make a chia slime! On page 26 we have a questionnaire for the kids to do for a funny little gift for Dad for Father’s Day - something that he can keep and look back on and laugh or not depending on the answers! Speaking of Father’s Day - why not book in a session at Monty Studio (page 5) They can help create some wonderful memories that include all family members - furry or not! There’s also a delicious recipe for a chickpea curry that’s quick and tasty and one of our family favourites - maybe it might become one of yours too! As always I hope you enjoy this months issue and I wish you and your family a fun filled August!! Take care and stay warm!!

Yarra Plenty Regional Library says goodbye to fines From 1 July 2019, books borrowed from Yarra Plenty Regional Library will no longer attract overdue fines if returned late. In August 2018, YPRL removed all fines from its youth items in order to encourage children's literacy. Since then, there has been a significant increase in all children and youth loans including a 57% increase in young adult items borrowed by 12–15 year old members and a 20% increase of teen items borrowed by 15–18 year olds. Now the YPRL board has voted to remove fines from the library altogether, in order to encourage more community members to access library books without fear of financial penalty. Fines can have a major impact on low-income families, children and seniors, thereby excluding the very community members who rely on library services the most. YPRL believes that the majority of patrons will continue to return their books on time, even without the fear of fines. Research shows that fines do not incentivise returning books on time, but can instead deter borrowing. For members with current outstanding fines, YPRL is offering an opportunity to wipe the slate clean with a Food for Fines amnesty. Running throughout July, the library will waive all fines for anyone who returns their books and donates to its food drive. YPRL has partnered with Foodbank Victoria on this initiative, who will distribute the collected items to people in need. YPRL's extensive collection of over 350,000 items includes books, DVDs, audiobooks, CDs, games, comic books, LOTE items and technology from the Learning Library. All fine free from 1 July. 'The Yarra Plenty Regional Library Board hopes to minimise barriers to library usage and encourage more community members to explore our exceptional libraries without fear of financial penalty for late returns,' says Cr Peter Clarke, Chair of the YPRL Board. ‘Library fines undermine one of the core principles of public libraries – the provision of free and universal access to information. Library fines can contribute to significant financial hardship. YPRL wants to ensure that everyone in our community is free to read, learn and create,' says Jane Cowell, YPRL CEO.

Chia Ooblek Slime Borax Free/Taste Safe
YOU WILL NEED: Large mixing bowl 1/4 cup chia seeds 1 1/2 cups water 2-4 cups cornflour Food colouring (op onal)
MESS y BUT FUN!!
Place the chia seeds in a large bowl and then add the water If using food colouring add it in now to allow the chia seeds and the slime to become coloured. Note that you will be white cornstarch, so you will not end up with a really bright colour. Cover the bowl with cling wrap and pop in the fridge over night. A er 12-36 hours, the chia seeds will be ready to make slime. Slowly s r in the cornflour – a er the 2 cup mark you will need to start mixing and kneading the cornstarch in as it will become increasingly difficult. Use your personal preference to determine when to stop adding cornstarch but do not exceed 4 cups. Store in the fridge in between play – you will need to knead addi onal water in to “revitalize” the slime. Share a photo with us on Facebook of your Chia Slime fun
