VOLUME 13
Hi & welcome to our August Issue!! Here we are in round 2 of lockdown! With the talk of going into Stage 4. Wow it’s not where any of us wanted to be or even thought we would be again! I’m so grateful that we did manage to get a short break in NSW over the school holidays and spend time with family, who knows when the next time might be? For those of you that are again in the role of teacher during home-schooling I hope its all going well!? We have had a rocky start to the new term with our schooling routine. Our family home is being renovated and we’ve moved out for 6 months (fingers crossed its not any longer!) Moving with kids is hard work - the packing, the sorting, the unpacking and the organising. It’s makes me want to throw everything out and start again! But in amongst the crazy and unpredictable times we have managed to put this issue together! Inside we have some fun pages with activities and cooking to try with the kids. You could try the delicious and sneaky Zucchini Chocolate Brownies. It’s an easy one for the kids to help make and they might be surprised at how good vegetables can taste! In Kids Corner we have Edible Art - it's a fun way to make a celebration breakfast more special - like for Father’s Day coming up next month. We also have a competition for Father’s Day with a $50 voucher on offer for the best designed mask. All the details on what to do and how to enter are on page 36. We also revisited one of our favourite parks in Watsonia. Although the playground equipment is out of bounds at the moment the space is open and has a duck pond and grasslands to venture through. Although it may be one to save for later if you're more than 5km away if we are in stage 4. With our new normal of wearing masks when we leave home we have a great initiative started by singer/songwriter Michael Burrows - #whatweneedtodo. There is a catchy jingle and hand gesture making a W sign. It’s about all of us together - it’s what we need to do! We all need to continue to play our part to wear our masks, social distance and stay at home to help stop the spread. If you haven’t already download the government app: www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/coronavirusaustralia-app During these times we all need to stick together. We can support our local businesses by following them on their social pages - some are adapting with online classes to keep offering you services. Check in with your local area to see what is available. We are still producing our magazine as a digital version (on-line only) for the next few months - you can subscribe and have the issue emailed to you by going to our website and filling in your email address: www.yourchildinbanyuleandnillumbik.com.au Like Us On Take care for now and best wishes for a great month! www.facebook.com/YourChildinbanyuleandnillumbik

Out and About
BINNAK PARK
Anderson Parade WATSONIA I was so impressed and a little suprised by how great this park is. I grew up not far from there and had memories of an old playground near the football oval. That playground is still there but further along and set up on the rise is a newer play space that we happily played at for over 2 hours! Driving off the road into a generous car park you will find the well spaced area. The main structure has numerous climbing features including a rock wall, ladder with a firemen pole, stepping steps and a rope bridge to test out abilities. All the effort is rewarded at the top with an enclosed spiral slide. For the younger kids (or less adventurous) there’s a smaller web and a separate lower structure with bars
10
and ropes to master and build confidence. This park also has plenty of tracks if you want to take bikes or scooters. But it doesn’t stop at there! If you walk past the playground beyond the car park and head down the hill you will come across some wetlands, bridges and resident ducks. The enjoyment my boys got out of playing amongst it all was fantastic! Finding feathers and gathering sticks and chatting to the ducks; it was like the icing on a cake and the perfect end to our day. On a side note: If you are planning on a visit to the ducks there are signs asking people not to feed the ducks - although I’m not so sure that the ducks have got this memo yet!

The Whi lesea Agricultural Society Inc. has, with much considera on, decided to cancel the 2020 Annual Whi lesea Show. The con nuing restric ons associated with COVID-19, especially the management of social-distancing and the possible risk to public health during large events were the major factors for this decision. The uncertainty of knowing when these restric ons would be li ed has made it very diďŹƒcult to forward plan for our annual show. We take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the show including our many
supporters, volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors, local community groups, stall holders, entertainers etc. We know that for some of these groups the Whi lesea Show provides a major contribu on to their fundraising and annual income and we are saddened that we are unable to assist by providing an event this year. We look forward to providing our 161st Whi lesea Show on the 6th & 7th of November in 2021.

MOTHERS HELPING MOTHERS WITH POSTNATAL DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY Have you previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety? Are you interested in providing support to new mothers at risk of postnatal depression or anxiety? Approximately 1 in 5 of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression and/or anxiety and many do not receive the support they require. To help these new mothers, researchers from the La Trobe University are conducting a study called “DAISY – Depression & AnxIety peer Support studY”. This study consists of experienced mothers who have previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety offering mother-to-mother telephone support to new mothers who are at high-risk to develop postnatal depression or anxiety. We are seeking peer support volunteers who have previously experienced (and recovered from) postnatal depression or anxiety. To become a “peer support volunteer” you will need to attend a 4-hour on-line video training session to learn how to provide telephone support. If you are interested in finding out more information or would like to participate in this new telephone-based support study by becoming a peer volunteer, please contact the DAISY study peer volunteer coordinator: Jessica Bee Email: daisy@latrobe.edu.au Phone: 9479 5428
