Hi & welcome to our October Issue Our last school holidays before we head into the 4th term of the year! The year is flying by and already the Christmas supplies are in the shops - what!! I look at Ollie and can’t believe that in just a short time he will be putting on a school uniform and heading off to school with Cooper and Max. I think there will be a few tears on that first day (mine!) October is double birthday month for us with hubby and Ollie both celebrating birthdays. Ollie is having a birthday party with kinder friends invited and he is so excited - I have to admit so am I. I love a birthday party (anyone but mine!) This month we have some great advertisers that could help you pull off a fabulous party - be it for a venue, the entertainment or both. In this months issue we feature a book written by local mum Michelle Karavas called “The Day My Brain Went Crazy” Its about helping children deal with big emotions like anger - that can also be very scarey for children sometimes. We have a copy at home and it’s been a favourite of Ollie’s. We have a copy of Michelle’s book to give away and you can find details on how to enter inside. This month is also Halloween. Do you embraces this day? Do you kids dress up and go door knocking and Trick or Treating? They all seem to love it - the excitement of seeing others dressed up in the street and the talk of the loot that they collected. We have an article about Halloween by our regular writer Irene Goonan and she makes some interesting points about this “Day of the Dead”. There is also an ad for Savers in Greensborough - did you know they have costumes both new and used? For big and little people - maybe this year I might join in with all the fun too! We also made some Spooky Biscuits for In the Kitchen you might want to try making with the kids. As always I hope you enjoy what we have inside for you and I wish you a fantastic October! Take care and if you do celebrate Halloween - Happy Trick or Treating!

Ringing The Bell For Peace...... 1918 & 2018

by Kathleen Toal

Remembrance Day – 11th November 2018 marks the centenary of the signing of the Armistice between the Allies of World War 1 and Germany. The Armistice took effect at the 11th eleventh hour (Paris time) on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. The actual signing of the Armistice had occurred at 5.00 am in a Railway carriage in the forest of Compiègne. The Armistice brought to an end four years of brutal fighting – almost 62,000 Australians died fighting and amongst those who returned many had been injured. Over the last four years across Australia there have been many Commemorative Services including the Landing of the ANZACS at Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915, The August Offensive 1915 (Battles of Lone Pine & the Nek), Battle of Beersheba, various Battles on the Western Front in France and Belgium, including the Battles of the Somme, Fromelles, Pozières, Ypres, Menin Road, Passchendaele, Zonnebeke, and more recently the Battle of Le Hamel, and Hundred Days Offensive. At the time of World War I the Shire of Nillumbik and Montmorency (now part of the City of Banyule) were part of the large Shire of Eltham – the Eltham Council Chambers were located at that time in Kangaroo Ground and Eltham was a small town within the Shire. The news of the Armistice was greeted with much joy and celebration throughout the towns of the Eltham Shire . . . the local newspapers reported these celebrations in great detail – at Eltham . . . “Upon the receipt of the news half-an-hour after announcement in the City as to the signing of the Armistice, the bell of St Margaret's Eltham was set going and rung until the bell rope BROKE. Some 60 people had then assembled and joined in a special service of thanksgiving in the Church, conducted by the Vicar . . . The Scouts with all the available young men and the

12

local schoolmaster paraded the street singing patriotic songs, accompanied by the Scout drum and impromptu instruments and kept going for hours, The surrounding hills were lit up with bonfire light and everything tended to a fitting proclamation of the glad tidings for which after the four years of anxiety and suspense everyone could truly rejoice.“ In 2018 one hundred years later Eltham will remember the sacrifice of those soldiers and nurses who fought in World War 1 and subsequent wars - at St Margaret's on Saturday 10th November the bell will be rung at 1.55pm just prior to a Thanksgiving service of Remembrance; and on Sunday morning, 11th November at the War Memorial Tower, Kangaroo Ground a Remembrance Day Service commencing at 10.45am. The Tower was dedicated in 1926 to remember all the people from the Shire of Eltham who had paid the supreme sacrifice in World War 1. An invitation is extended to the communities of Banyule and Nillumbik to attend these Remembrance services – please wear a red poppy for remembrance.

The Day My Brain Went Crazy A children's children'sbook bookononmanaging managing anger anger written by by local localDiamond DiamondCreek Creek mum mum and child psychologist psychologistMichelle MichelleKaravas. Karavas. The Day My Brain Went Crazy is a new children's book designed to help children who find it difficult to self-regulate and manage their anger. Inspired to write the book after working with many children – including her own – to help them better understand and deal with their anger, the book helps children learn a variety of ways to positively manage their feelings. The Day My Brain Went Crazy is about a little boy named Jake who is 8 years old. Jake lives with his parents, older brother and dog Milo. Jake is good at many things, like playing basketball and drawing, however sometimes Jake gets angry. He is good at controlling his anger in public but lets it all out at home. There are so many things that make Jake angry, like when he gets attacked by a zombie in his video game, or when he spells a word wrong or when his older brother picks on him. One day Jake gets so angry when his Dad asks him to do things around the house, he thinks his brain is going crazy. When Jake is eventually calm, he and his mum develop a calm chart together to help him manage his temper in a helpful way. Jake begins to understand some of the warning signs of his anger and using the calm chart and other strategies, Jake is able to better manage his emotions next time he gets angry. Written for children between the ages of 5 to 11 years of age, The Day My Brain went crazy provides children with helpful strategies for managing their temper in an easy to understand and

practical way. After reading the book many children have told Michelle that they identify with Jake and many parents have told her that they can also relate to having a “Jake in the house”. There is also a comprehensive tip sheet for parents at the end of the book which teaches them about anger and how to help their child. “Anger is a completely normal human emotion and is often a reaction to frustration, stress and disappointment or even when children don't get their own way. As children grow, most learn how to deal with the frustrations of everyday life, and they learn helpful ways to manage their anger. However, some children need more help. I hope that by reading the book, children feel that they are normal and they are not alone when they feel angry. It is something that takes practice to manage and with a little help they will feel a lot better” adds Michelle. Michelle Karavas is a child psychologist and has worked for the Department of Education and Training for over thirteen years. She also works in private practice and has worked in the Juvenile Justice System. She counsels children who have difficulties with anxiety, depression, anger, grief, stress, autism, social skills and bullying. Michelle lives in Melbourne with her husband and two boys aged 13 and 11. For book purchases go to Amazon or www.michellekaravas.com.au
