July 2018
Hi & welcome to our July Issue Here we go into the Term 2 school holidays! I always start the holidays with such big hopes of days out at parks, a movie or 2 and even a train trip into the city to visit Dad at work. But the time usually zips past and the first week I find we all just like the slower pace and welcome the break from the morning rush and routine. Plus both our older boys have become a little too keen on the game Fortnite!! I’m sure there must be more than a few of you nodding your head and understanding my frustrations as you read this! One thing I’m looking forward to though is some family cooking at home. Ollie loves to help with making something sweet - the reward of licking a spoon or dipping a finger into the mixture is nearly as good as the finished product. All our boys are fussy eaters so my aim to is try and get them more involved to hopefully open there minds to trying something different - it sounds like a good plan! I might even get adventurous with them and cook the recipe we have on page 25. Yes that's how fussy they are - not one of them will eat soup - crazy!! All I hear about!! If you get stuck for ideas on what to do with your children we have lots of ideas inside. Activities you can book for some sporty fun or craft, buy a ticket to a play, visit the park we have on page 10 or a trip to the library for one of their sessions, you might even like to try making Lava Lamp that we have in Kids Corner or cook up a storm at home and make the Golden Chicken Soup. If you have a great idea that you would like to share why not send us a message and we’ll pop it up on our Facebook page. I really hope you enjoy what we have inside for you this month. We have 2 competitions running on our Facebook page, all the details are on page 5 plus great articles throughout the issue. Thank you again for taking us into your home and I wish you an amazing July!

Nathan Last year Your Child magazine met Loyola College student Nathan Sia, a young man who initiated and completed a wonderful project called 'Footy Boots for Cambodia'. The boots, along with a few footballs, were shipped over to Xavier Jesuit School in Sisophon, Cambodia, to be distributed to the students there. This year Nathan's generous spirit has been at it again and this time he was inspired to collect board games. We had a chat to Nathan to find out how his projects went, and what motivates him to pursue this kind of community service. Nathan, how did your 'Footy Boots for Cambodia' project go? 'Really well, we had over 100 pairs of footy boots donated by the community and shipped over to the school.’ That's a great result! And now board games! Why board games? 'Well, here in Australia we are more advantaged than many others. We can afford to buy and play any game we like, but people over there (in Cambodia) cannot afford such things. Playing board games helps keep kids occupied and also reading the instructions is great for practising their English'. That's a good point! And how has this project gone? 'It's gone really well, we got over 100 games such as Scrabble and Monopoly donated.' Fantastic! Why do the goods you collect go to Cambodia? 'My house, Xavier House, has a connection 16

meaning of those famous words spoken by Jesus: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive'. We couldn't agree more, and wish Nathan the very best, both with any further service projects he initiates, and with his studies.
And how will you get all your board games over to Cambodia? 'Mrs Devlin, who is the teacher who helped me last year, she will be helping me again this year by organising the shipping and the delivery to the school.’
By Amanda Marasco & Nathan Sia
Nathan's mum, Marisa, has been surprised and pleased by the Banyule and Nillumbik community's response to Nathan's latest project. 'I promoted it on Nathan's behalf on Facebook, and soon had games piling up on my doorstep', she says, proving that the power of social media can be used as a force for good. 'It took two car trips to get them all down to the school!’ There is only one question left to ask Nathan, and that is: How do you feel at the end of these projects, when you know that other people are benefitting from something you have done? 'I'm proud of myself. And I get a good feeling I was sent pictures of people wearing the footy boots and playing in them and it gave me a good feeling to see them being used.' I'm sure I'll be sent some pictures of people playing the board games, and I will get a good feeling again.’ It sounds very much like Nathan, at just 14, clearly understands and appreciates the To advertise in Your Child in Banyule & Nillumbik call 0411 459 872
