October 2017
Hi & welcome to our October Issue And bang another school holidays!! The year is flying by and already the Christmas supplies are in the shops - yikes!! But I will enjoy a little break from all the sports. We have had footy presentations, basketball grand finals (nail biting finish!) and school district sports! I think I need to lay down - lol. October is double birthday month for us with hubby and Ollie both celebrating birthdays. Ollie is having his first birthday party with friends invited and he is so excited - I have to admit so am I. I love a birthday party (anyones but mine!) Plus my eldest nephew with be turning 13. I remember the day he was born and how trilled we all were and utterly besotted I was with him. He is still pretty cute just a whole lot bigger! In this months issue local mum Amanda Marasca has written a fantastic article “Is Your Child Ready For School?” For anyone contemplating the school journey it's a great read. This was something we took our time with when we decided for our eldest Cooper as his birthday falls in January. Its not always a straight forward decision and I know a few parents have grappled with the decision. Every child is different so its not a one size fits all approach. We also have an article about a project started by a student from Loyola College in Watsonia. The 13 year old headed “Footy Boots For Cambodia”. A friend had sent me a link on Facebook and through the wonder of social media I was able to track Nathan down and find out all about how and why the project started. I think you will agree he is one amazing kid! This month we are running 2 more competitions. A book competition thanks to Robinsons Books in Greensborough (our monthly book reviewer) This month you could win copy of Koala Bare by Jackie French. Check out the reviews on page 23 on our “Book Corner” and find out how to enter. And Hunter Lane in Rosanna have sent through a recipe for their scrumptious Pancakes. These pancakes get the tick of approval from Ollie he loves them! You can win a $50 voucher to spend at the café so make sure to jump on Facebook and enter. As always I hope you enjoy this months magazine and I wish you a great October. Take care and if you celebrate Halloween - Happy Trick or Treating!

Out and About
Greensborough War Memorial Park Ester Street GREENSBOROUGH This month we ventured to Greensborough to check out the War Memorial Park. A great one to go to if you’re out at the shops as a reward or to tire them out before you head home. The play space isn’t overly big and only has one main structure but if has enough to keep them busy for a little while. It consists of a set of swings - one being a toddler seat, a rope web, 2 slides, stairs, ladder, standard monkey bars & lower set U shaped monkey bars (which can be used as a climbing frame above), landings with a telescope and steering wheel, nest swing and animal rockers. Plus with the added bonus
10
of a half court basketball area and a large oval to run around and play on. Although the playground is not shaded there are plenty of trees that would provide some shade during summer. The area in fenced for extra safety and has bench seats and tables close by. There is also a BBQ and rotunda towards the back with a drinking tap too. For those with kids a little older the history of the War Memorial is something they may appreciate and find interesting and enjoy exploring. As with all winning real estate its all about location location location!! I hope you enjoy this one.

Footy Boots For Nathan's project started with an innate interest to serve those that are less fortunate than others. Xavier House at Loyola College has raised considerable funds for many years for the charitable organisation Jesuit Mission Australia. Jesuit Mission have a preferential love of the poor and uphold the innate dignity whilst promoting the rights of God's most vulnerable people from all faiths and cultures. They partner with Jesuits and other companions overseas to empower women, men and children living on the frontiers to liberate themselves from poverty and injustice through participation in programs that build skills, capacity and resilience to live full and free lives. In looking to make a connection with those in our third world, the Xavier House year seven students took part in an email/penpal project to connect with other year seven students at the Xavier Jesuit College in Cambodia. The Xavier House year seven students invest their time to write to their email/penpal over the course of this year, which in turn, has created a wonderful relationship between all parties involved. The students were particularly fond of teaching the Cambodian students all about Australian Rules Football and 'who' they should be barracking for. In turn, the project allows the Cambodian students to practice their English and writing skills whilst learning about Australian Culture. Nathan is the year seven leader of Xavier House at Loyola College and has been the driving force for the 'boots for Cambodia' project. By contacting local primary schools and organisations, Nathan has collected over 60 pairs of boots. This along with the kind donation of footballs by other families at the college will be a wonderful gift to the Xavier Jesuit School. With the relationship building between students from both schools, it is the hope that they get to meet each other during the Loyola College immersion program to Cambodia. Nathan is an outstanding leader and a great role model for all children of his age that 'we can be more than ourselves’.

We were so impressed by the great deed that Nathan had set in motion and wanted to hear from him how it was all going: Where did the idea come from to start “Footy Boots for Cambodia? It all started when one of my teachers (Mrs Devlin) came up with the idea of all the Xavier House students to email students at Xavier Jesuit School in Cambodia because they only recently received internet with an email address. I thought to myself, what if we introduce them to Aussie Rules and send them some footballs. The second thing that came to my mind was, what if I send them donated footy boots. So brought this idea up with Mrs Devlin and she thought it was a great idea but had to make enquiries to work out if and how we could get the boots over there. It basically took off from there. What do you want out of this experience? I feel good that I can make a difference in the world

Cambodia and change people's lives because the students in Cambodia are not lucky like us and they need something that can put a smile on their faces. Who has been your mentor? Mrs Devlin has been my mentor as she has helped me organize my project. Mrs Thompson, Head of Xavier House has helped me promote my drive and spread the word to other teachers and around the school. My parents who have helped guide me to success. I just want to thank my Nonni who helped scrub clean the majority of the boots. I really appreciate them getting involved and also wanting to make a difference. My Nonna said that it was good for my Nonno because he would stop annoying her for a while! What has been the hardest part about the project? The most challenging part of this project has been trying to get other schools, footy clubs and the local
By Fiona Devlin & Nathan Sia community to support my project. What has surprised you during the project? At first I thought I was only going to receive around 30 boots, but surprisingly the total number of boots I generously received from the community has been over 70 pairs. I have lost count of the number of boots donated but I am sure that the numbers are close to 100. Do you plan to run this project again next year? This experience has taken me out of my comfort zone. It has been great to see the local community get together and help make a difference alongside me. Next year, Mrs Devlin will be travelling to the school in Cambodia and will be able to find out what else they need. If help is needed, I am happy to be involved.
We wish Nathan great success!!

Local Fun For Andrew Vernes not only supports local sporting clubs, but is also a very generous supporter of schools, providing fundraising packages and even hosting school closure days. He is just about to launch an Award programme for local schools. School Holiday's at the Stadium are so much fun for all. There is a variety of sports including AFL Football, Soccer, Dodgeball and Cricket on offer. You don't need to know how to play those sports, the great team Andrew has will teach you! 1 hour of Sport + 2 hours of Inflatables = 3 hours of fun for only $25! The spring school holidays will also see a free magician perform for the Children! Bundoora Action Indoor Sports is the home of Inflatable World. But that's not all this huge arena houses. The Centre is a Multi-Indoor Sport Venue. Whilst they host leagues for junior and senior Cricket, Soccer, Netball, Volleyball and Dodgeball they also hold classes to teach Children skills in those sports. It's never too early to learn to be a team player and their 4-6 year old Action FC Soccer Class on a Wednesday night is very popular – after all, why should the big kids have all the fun?! The Centre is a hive of activity during the week. Many local schools like to hold their sports programs or carnivals inside so as not to be rescheduled due to weather. The sports can be run by the Centre, however some schools have their students design and run games themselves! 16
Various events are held during the year including the extremely popular Twilight Halloween Market and this year for the first time a “Dad Jumps Free” session was held on Father's Day where many Dad's jumped on the Inflatables with their Children and then enjoyed a FREE coffee and slushy together! Corporate Team Building and End of Year social events for adults were on offer. Local businesses hired the Stadium for team meetings and followed on with a bit of fun on the Inflatables and a few games of friendlies on the sport courts. Some local Clubs have even hired the Stadium for their family days! The Centre hires out courts day and evening some for impromptu training sessions for Cricket (including bowling lanes), Soccer and even Tennis when the weather doesn't allow for outdoor sports. …and the kids are more

Everyone!! than happy when their outdoor training sessions aren't cancelled! Mum's n Bub's Fitness Classes are held during the week and in 2018 we will see an even bigger variety of sports and activities on offer! Amongst all the fantastic things this Centre offers are PARTIES! Parties can include only the Inflatables or a combination of Sports and Inflatables and one of the best things is that the Centre can do the catering for you or you can self-cater! So pop in and say hello, have a coffee and muffin and check out the venue, you won't be disappointed!

In The Kitchen Hunter Lane Pancakes
We don't know a child that doesn't love a pancake. I'm sure they are out there, but we haven't met one yet who has turned their noses up at our famous M&M pancakes. So, if you're keen to give your child a treat on a Sunday morning without the hullabaloo of getting them dressed for an outing, here is the secret recipe of our famous kids pancakes. Enjoy!
Pancakes 1¾ cup milk 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 cups of sifted self-raising flour 1/3 cup of caster sugar Whisk milk, eggs and vanilla essence together. In a separate bowl, combine flour and sugar and mix through. Add ingredients from both bowls together and whisk until just combined. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Grease pan with butter or spray with cooking oil. Using 1/4 cup mixture per pancake, cook 2 pancakes for 2 minutes or until bubbles appear on surface. Turn and cook for a further 1-2 minutes or until cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Cover loosely with foil to keep warm. Repeat with remaining mixture, greasing pan with butter or cooking oil between batches. (Makes 16)
Nutella ganache ¾ cup Nutella Hazelnut Spread (about half a jar) ½ cup full cream 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt Place the Nutella into a medium bowl. Heat the cream in a small sauce pan over medium heat. Bring just to a boil and pour over the Nutella. Whisk until smooth. Stir in the sea salt. Let the ganache cool slightly before pouring over the pancakes. Topping Ice cream is a must. Have some fun with the crunch element - M&M's, smarties or crumbled honeycomb are perfect additions. Strawberries and berries are your healthier option. This month recipe was supplied by Hunter Lane 76 Turnham Ave Rosanna PH 8529-8142 Pop down to Hunter Lane and try their new seasonal menu....

Children's Week in Banyule
21st to 29th October
Children's Week is an annual event celebrated across Australia in the fourth week of October. It aims to raise awareness of children's rights and celebrates their abilities, accomplishments and talents. Every year Banyule Council, community groups and early childhood services invite children and their families, schools, playgroups, childcare, kindergartens, cultural groups and community groups to be involved. This year the Children's Week National theme 'Education has the power to transform children's lives.' is based on Article 29 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This theme is inviting all us to think about the role of Education in the lives of children- its importance in helping children to develop their skills and talents to the fullest and to respect and value, their parents and culture, the natural environment and the rights of others.
