Hello & Welcome to Our June Magazine, Can you believe it's already June! With life being busy all the time it is important to remember to take time out for yourself. This month's magazine has some great articles to look at while you sit down for a quick cuppa. Aurora in the Kitchen made some delicious Naked Cookie Dough Balls, perfect as a healthy snack for the kids can be found on page 27 and in Kids Corner this month we have a fun Frog dot to dot! With the arrival of winter and the cooler months it's so much harder to get out with the little ones. However, Freddy and I spent a lovely afternoon at the park the other day feeding the ducks in the cold windy weather (we just missed the rain!) Freddy wasn't phased at all and it was a great chance to release some energy that had built up from being cooped inside. The local park is a great way for a quick play in between local showers and it can make such a difference. (If wet always remember to pack gumboots, a coat and towel- to dry off play equipment.) Fun with Freddy can be found on page 25. I really hope you enjoy this issue. Be sure to check out this month's advertisers for something fun to do, see or buy for you or someone you love and a new class or activity for your child. Stay warm!

The Smelly Business Staring at the two young boys rubbing their crotch against my leather couch, I tried hard to mask the horror on my face. In my mind, I could see o n l y t w o solutions to this problem: bleach the couch or get a new one. “They do this all the time. Boys are obsessed with their penises!” laughed my friend, brushing off the strange behaviour as a common problem all mothers of boys experienced.

being a circus trainer, tasked with corralling a crazed monkey hyped on natural adrenaline. Imagine a cymbal clapping monkey with no off button and short-circuited. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration. Perhaps it’s just my son, and I’m giving circus monkeys a bad name. Don’t get me wrong, I love my son. He is very loving and sweet, but man does he test my limits in ways my daughter never did. When I complain about grey hairs as a result of raising a boy, I don’t think people truly believe me. So I think the best way is to give examples of how raising a boy has been different from raising a girl. Example 1: My four-year-old son and I are sprawled on the couch with a blanket on us. We chat about random topics. Out of nowhere, he pulls the blanket over our heads. Thinking it was a new game, I go along with it. He gives a suspicious giggle. A second later, I’m throwing off the blanket and gagging from the foul-smelling odour hitting my nostrils. Where my daughter finds bodily fumes disgusting, my son thinks it’s funny to Dutch oven his mother.

At the time, having a well-mannered and mildtempered four-year-old daughter, I could not imagine any son of mine being different. Honestly, if someone had told me that raising boys would involve a ton of toilet humour and penile fascination, I would have scoffed at their ridiculous suggestion. But five years on, with a four-year-old son of my own, I am eating my words.

Point here: Little boys are fascinated with flatulence. They love doing farts, wielding these smelly fluff fluffs like weapons of mass destruction. If my son could use his putrid puffs as currency, he would be rich.

Now I scoff when anyone tells me that raising boys is no different from raising girls (e.g. my mum, who tells me that my inferior parenting skills are the reasons behind my son’s mischievous nature). Parenting a boy is like

Example 2: Every night I give the kids a goodnight cuddle and a kiss before they hop into bed. One night, my son asks me to crouch down to his level. Thinking that he wanted a big cuddle, I bend

of Raising Boys!

by Kathy Ha Sometimes it’s a toy to explore. Oh, there’s a hole… I wonder if I can put something in it?

Instead of receiving a goodnight cuddle, my son turns his back to me, bends at the waist and proceeds to fart in my face. He laughs like a crazy hyena before scooting off to bed. Point here: As a mother, I should always be on high alert for any signs pointing towards a fart attack. See previous point. Example 3: We meet up with another boy my son’s age for a play date at the park. The minute we hit the playground, it’s like game on. My son turns everything into a pissing contest. “Mummy, my water bottle is bigger than his!” “Push me higher! I want to go higher than him!” “I got here first, this is my steering wheel!”

Oh, what happens if I pull the skin really far out?.............Oh, I wonder what these two bumps are? And now that he has better control of his bladder, he waits until shower time and uses my clean shower screen as his canvas for a pee drawing. A penis art brush. Point here: Little boys love their penises, almost as much as potty humour. I bet this is a life-long love. There are many examples I could write about but then this post would never end. And now, there is an eerie silence in the house, which is rarely a good thing when parenting a boy. Let me sign off by saying there’s a certain charm to raising boys… and smell.

Point here: Little boys are competitive. Whether it’s innate or not, expect roughhousing, aggression and most likely, tantrums. Example 4: Since my son has been out of nappies, he’s become obsessed with his penis. Sometimes he uses his penis as a hose. Advertise NOW..... Call Kate 0497 788 856

Osteopathic Care in Pregnancy and Beyond

E

Osteopathy is a manual therapy that is ideal for use in any stage of pregnancy. An osteopath is qualified to support you throughout this me for a wide variety of problems. During pregnancy your body goes through many changes, which means that it is constantly adap ng and changing, o en leading to pains which can rou nely be treated by an osteopath. Let's take a look at the different stages of pregnancy: First trimester: Even though most women don't 'look' pregnant in this early stage, their bodies are undergoing many changes. Hormonal changes effect almost every system. Some women experience extreme redness, tender breasts, morning sickness, cravings for foods, mood swings, cons pa on, increased urina on, headaches, heartburn, weight gain, to name just a few. This is the start of an exci ng journey. Second trimester: More visible changes to the body begins; your belly begins to grow with the growth of your baby. As this occurs you may experience other symptoms, e.g. body aches, stretch marks, patches of darker skin, numb/ ngling hands (carpal tunnel syndrome), swelling of the ankles, fingers, and face and postural changes. Third trimester: This is the final stage. Some of the symptoms that you experienced previously will con nue and as your baby grows bigger you may also experience shortness of breath, heartburn, haemorrhoids, tender /leaking breasts, trouble sleeping, the baby moving lower in your abdomen and contrac ons. The body con nues to change as you prepare for labour. As osteopaths we are here to help with symptoms at all these stages of pregnancy and a er giving birth. We can even check and treat your baby as the birthing process causes a large amount of pressure on delicate structures. Give us a call if you need any advice, we are happy to help.

Making Compared to our forebears of yesteryear, a child's mind and psyche in 2021 has so many competing demands. Swimming lessons, ballet lessons, afterschool and weekend sport, scouts and cubs…the list goes on. These are all the incredible opportunities that are accessible for many living in this great country. However, I often ask “Where does school and learning fit into the jigsaw puzzle of a child's life?” Are our children (and the parents who take them to all these activities) over-committed, over-stimulated and too exhausted to get the most out of schooling and the learning that it offers. Having travelled and taught in Asian countries and in North America, I have witnessed the 'balance' and 'focus' on learning and schooling in these countries, which can be markedly different from lifestyles in Australia. Indeed, many of the extra-curricular activities Australian children participate in contribute to a child's health, mental wellbeing and socialization and this ultimately helps a child learn at school. However do we have the 'mix' right? As our country slides down the world achievement rankings in English, Mathematics and Science, do we give schooling the priority that it deserves in our busy family lives, or has schooling simply become “something that kids do whilst parents go to work”? There would not be one parent that would not want their child to have high standard writing, reading, speaking and mathematical skills and for them to do well in the primary school years; then leading on to secondary studies, VCE/VCAL and tertiary studies. But are we making the most of the exciting opportunities that primary schools offer by Making School and its Learning 18

#1 in a child's mind and heart. Children have a finely tuned radar and are experts at detecting an adult's feelings about school, a class, a teacher or a subject. So are we as parents sending the right messages to our children that the education schools provide is the most precious opportunity and gift they will ever receive? Some of the ways you can Make Learning #1 in your child's eyes and make the most of the great educational system we have is to: Read, Read, Read…..Children who read with their parents each day, who enjoy literature together and different text types will nearly always do well in their primary schooling. Children who read each day are normally good writers, have a great general knowledge and understand the world around them. As a teacher you can often pick out the prolific readers in a class. Make the most of each and every school day by being at school. Every day counts! Taking family holidays in the middle of the school term is so disruptive to the continuity of learning. When children are away from school, they become disconnected not only from their learning, but also from their peers who have 'moved on' in their absence. Regular absences from school mount up over the course of the seven years of primary school. Instead, use the regular school holidays to take family holidays. While it may cost more, can you actually put a price on missed learning and the fall back that occurs through lost time at school? Home tasks set by the school engage the whole family in learning. Use these tasks to connect

Learning #1 and be interested in your child's learning. Develop good study and organizational routines which are so essential for confidence and success in later schooling. Help children to become responsible for their own learning and study commitments. Punctuality is an important life skill. Be at school on time and don't miss out on valuable learning. Being on time tells everyone that Learning is #1 and you don't want to miss a minute of school. Develop in your child a love and respect for schools and learning. There is no greater gift that you can give your child than a good education. Learning and fun go hand in hand,

by Philip Cachia

but when schooling is all fun and no learning, you can be guaranteed that secondary school will be no fun at all. Learning at primary school, being with teachers and friends and creating fond memories are things all children yearn for, love to go to and desperately miss when they are not there. Families who Make Learning #1 never look back. They look forward to the next exciting chapter of learning, challenge and growth and look forward to a lifelong curiosity to explore and learn. Fun With Freddy

Kalparrin Gardens Greensborough What a gorgeous little spot to take the family. At Kalparrin Gardens you'll find a lake full of ducks and geese, a fully fenced playground as well as walking tracks set in a beautiful, leafy park. With toilets and pram friendly paths it's really the perfect spot for a picnic, walk, play or scoot! The lake is actually a stormwater harvesting lake, a water quality and conservation system used to store stormwater underground in order to use it to water parks and ovals in the local area. The wetland on top of the water storage attracts heaps of birdlife which is a thrill for the kids. The ducks are (mostly) friendly and comfortable around humans, but of course make sure there is an adult close by just in case - the goose has been known to be a bit wary of the little ones! Also remember to tell the kids that it's not good to feed human food like bread to any birds - they have plenty of bugs and plants to eat in their habitat. The playground is fully fenced which is excellent being so close to the lake. The equipment includes a boat themed tower with slides and climbing equipment, swings, whale rockers and a balance surfboard.
