MAY 2020 2019 Volume 12 YOUR LOCAL FAMILY MAGAZINE June
VOLUME 13
Hi & welcome to our May Issue!! What a strange new world we are all living in at the moment. A time I think most of us never would never have imagined was possible. Being separated from family and friends, many working from home and home schooling our children. After years of our boys wanting to be home schooled they now all agree going to school is a lot more fun. I don’t think I’ll be receiving any presents from them for being their favourite teacher - there has certainly been no apples on my desk- lol! In the recent month, we have all become familiar with concepts like 'social distancing', 'selfisolation' and 'flattening the curve' – all part of our individual and collective efforts to slow and limit the spread of COVID-19. We all have been doing our best to protect the health and safety of our community and the wider population. Whilst there have been many of our local businesses that have had to closed others have been able to make changes and adapt to the circumstances. Starting online classes, limiting numbers through their doors or interacting with the customers in different ways. When the going gets tough our community gets creative and supports each other! For the next few months we have also had to make changes to how our magazine is published. Whilst so many businesses are closed and the “Stay at Home” restrictions are in place it makes sense for us to produce an online issue only and put our printed editions hold until restrictions begin to ease. You can subscribe to have the issue sent to you by going to our website www.yourchildinbanyuleandnillumbik.com.au and filling in you details there. Also continue to check out our Facebook page as we keep you updated on what is happening in and around Banyule & Nillumbik - please tag us or send a message if you have something that would be useful or informative for our followers

MOTHERS HELPING MOTHERS WITH POSTNATAL DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY Have you previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety? Are you interested in providing support to new mothers at risk of postnatal depression or anxiety? Approximately 1 in 5 of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression and/or anxiety and many do not receive the support they require. To help these new mothers, researchers from the La Trobe University are conducting a study called “DAISY – Depression & AnxIety peer Support studY”. This study consists of experienced mothers who have previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety offering mother-to-mother telephone support to new mothers who are at high-risk to develop postnatal depression or anxiety. We are seeking peer support volunteers who have previously experienced (and recovered from) postnatal depression or anxiety. To become a “peer support volunteer” you will need to attend a 4-hour on-line video training session to learn how to provide telephone support. If you are interested in finding out more information or would like to participate in this new telephone-based support study by becoming a peer volunteer, please contact the DAISY study peer volunteer coordinator: Jessica Bee Email: daisy@latrobe.edu.au Phone: 9479 5428

In The Kitchen BLISS BALLS 3 WAYS
Bliss balls are a great snack or to tied them over until dinner or a treat for you with a nice cuppa! If you find the mixture is sticking to your hands when rolling them put some coconut oil or water on them and this should help. The balls should keep for around a week in a sealed container BUT they don’t last that long at our house!
Raisin Oat Balls Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ
Chocolate Coconut Balls
10 medjool dates, seeds removed 1/2 cup raisins 1 cup rolled oats 1 tablespoon cacao or cocoa or carob 1/2 teaspoon natural vanilla extract pinch of salt coconut for rolling in
Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ
1 packet milk arrowroot biscuits 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1/2 cup desiccated coconut (plus a little extra for rolling the balls in) 1 tin (395g) condensed milk
Crush the biscuits and place into a mixing bowl.
Place the ingredients into a food processor/blender & process until it all sticks together.
Add cocoa and coconut, stir together then add condensed milk.
Roll the mixture into balls and roll in coconut. This can sometimes take a little while and the mixture will be crumbly before it all comes together. Place the chocolate balls on a plate and chill in the fridge for 30 mins. Roll mixture into balls & roll in coconut & place in the fridge to firm up a little.
Oat & Choc Chip Balls Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ
4 cups rolled oats 100 grams butter ½ cup honey 2 tsp vanilla extract ¼ tsp Himalayan Pink salt ¾ cup small choc chips
Place oats in a medium sized bowl and set aside. Melt the butter and honey in a saucepan until well combined & then add the vanilla & salt - mixing it through Add liquid to the oats and mix well. Now pop in the fridge to cool for 15 minutes. (It helps make it easier to roll the balls and also stops the choc chips from melting) Add in the choc chips and stir through evenly. Roll the mixture into balls & place in the fridge for 1-2 hrs to set.

Homemade Chalk
YOU WILL NEED: · Plaster of Paris · Water
· Food Colourings or Powdered Tempera Paint · Moulds · Mixing bowl · Spoon to mix
WHAT TO DO: 1) Add 1/2 cup of plaster of Paris powder to 1/4 cup water (ra o 2:1). (IMPORTANT: Always add plaster of Paris powder to the water—not the other way around!) 2) COLOUR MAGIC!! Add 6 - 8 drops of food colour or 1 heaped tbsp of powdered tempera paint and mix thoroughly. If you use food colouring the chalks will dry off lighter so it you want bright chalk try using the tempera paint. 3) Make sure you have no lumps. You will need to mix quickly before it starts to thicken! (It should resemble pancake mix. Add some more water if it’s too thick.) 4) Spoon the mixture into your chosen moulds making sure there are no air bubbles and the mould is full. We used Easter egg moulds but you could also use toilet rolls that have been sealed with masking tape on one end. 5) Now comes the hardest part!! WAITING!! It will take at least 24 hours for them to dry - if it's a nice day you could leave them out in the sunshine to help speed it up. Once completely dry pop them out of the moulds and start having fun crea ng some beau ful rainbows and artwork!!
