Dance helps to develop coordination, muscle strength, muscle control, emotional processing and creativity, not to mention, it's lots of FUN!. Dance Plus Studios is a family orientated dance school that understands some students with special needs may benefit from a slightly modified approach to get the most out of dance classes, but that this should never be a barrier to participation. At the end of 2020 the Montmorency dance school was able to secure a government grant to launch a new All In dance program. The teachers have undergone specific training, and under the guidance of All In co-ordinator Jess Allen, will utilise the most up to date practises in understanding behaviour, as well as sensory, motor and cognitive development, to ensure the class content is tailored to each student's needs and goals.

Jessica Allen

All students no matter what level of ability, are welcome to join in these classes and experience the benefits dance has to offer. About Jess: Jess has loved dance for as long as she can remember, and has been dancing for over 20 years. She began teaching dance classes 9 years ago and has since taught a wide variety of styles, abilities and age groups. Jess's interest in special needs developed from her brother, Tom, who has an intellectual disability. As she began teaching dance, she felt there was a gap in the market for inclusive dance classes, as participation in age-appropriate dance is often based on ability level. Jess believes everyone should have the opportunity to dance, and so is excited to implement inclusive dance classes at Dance Plus Studios! Jess holds a Diploma of Dance Teaching and Management, and a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Disability and Psychology). In January 2021 Jess completed the Rhythm Works Integrative Dance training course, to become a certified Rhythm Works instructor. Rhythm Works is a rhythm and dance program designed for those with learning differences and special needs, with the training focusing on cognitive, sensory and motor development.

Mother's Day Self Care Tips

I

f you're a Mum, the chances are you're constantly putting others ahead of yourself, especially your family. This is something that most, if not all, Mums are guilty of. I know my Mum put my brother and me before herself. What most often goes overlooked is the effect this has on Mums. Mums put others ahead of themselves to their own detriment. A lack of self-care leads to all sorts of emotional issues such as stress, depression and anxiety which in turn take a physiological toll on the human body including sleep disorders, weight gain, heart issues, increased and chances of cancer just to name a few. This is why Mother's Day is a great opportunity for Mums to give back to themselves and engage in some self-care activities. Here are 3 things for Mums to consider this Mother's Day.

Make yourself a priority. For one day, make yourself the number priority, not everyone else. In fact, encourage the rest of the family to make you their priority too. Make sure, your needs are met and you are being looked after for a change. It's your day, you've earned it!

by Rodney Owen endeavours such as art or creative writing.

Relax. Now that you've vented, you need to take some time to relax. Relaxing allows your body to rest and repair from the damage caused by stress. Relaxing will also help you to be happier, sleep easier and cope with stress. There are several ways you can relax. You have a massage, do something you enjoy like reading a book or taking a bubble bath, watch TV, meditation, spending time in nature, laying on the beach or even just enjoying some alone time. The most important thing to remember about self-care is that it shouldn't be practised only on one day. You need to practice self-care every day in some form or another. I don't mean for you to not make your family a priority, I mean for you to make yourself more of a priority than you already do. It is about striking a balance between yourself and your family. If you're having trouble to find the time to practice selfcare, consider seeking help from a professional counsellor.

Release pent up stress and frustration. The stressful lifestyle that most modern Mums endure leads to stress, frustration and pressure that rarely gets vented. This then builds and can have devastating consequences if it's not vented. To vent this build-up of stress, frustration and pressure you can try physical activity such as sports, running or working out, talking to friends or journaling or creative 6

Why a tight pelvic floor is not a strong pelvic floor “If my muscle is tight, why am I still leaking?” This is a great question. As a pelvic floor physio, I'm asked this often. The best way to answer, is to imagine we are talking about a different part of your body, such as your neck! Most people will have experienced a sore neck at some point in their life. And when you've had that sore neck, it's hard to turn your head, or you do so with trepidation, much slower than usual. During this uncomfortable time, if you've reached up to rub your neck and touched the muscle groups that are responsible for your neck movements you will have noticed how tight and tender they are to touch. So, we have a pain, we have tight muscles and we have loss of function. This is exactly what is happening in your pelvic floor. Most often, something will have occurred in the pelvis to cause your pelvic floor muscles to become overactive and tight. For example: a painful experience with constipation, a urinary tract infection, or perhaps an uncomfortable sexual experience. As a result of this, the pelvic floor muscles may go into spasm, or the individual may begin subconsciously holding tension in the pelvic floor muscles as a way of providing protection to the area. This causes the muscles to become short and stiffened. When muscles are held in a shortened position, they have less ability to contract and perform their function in a responsive and timely manner. 8

If we go back to the example of the neck; turning your head - the function of the neck muscles, may be reduced, and will be performed more slowly in the presence of tight, stiff muscles. In the case of the pelvic floor, the ability to contract to support the bladder - one of the functions of the pelvic floor, will be reduced, and performed more slowly when the pelvic floor muscles are tight and stiff. This can lead to urinary leakage. So, if this is the case, doing lots of pelvic floor exercises focused on squeezing and holding is not going to improve urinary leaking. In fact, it may make it worse or lead to a different condition due to even more tension in the pelvic floor muscles. Instead, what will assist this woman is if she can learn to downtrain the muscle tension. This can be taught and practiced and once we have a healthy muscle, sitting at a good resting length, we can then teach appropriate functional recruitment of the pelvic floor which will lead to long lasting continence. Can music help babies speak? by Natascha Feliciani

B

aby's first words are an exciting milestone, signifying a new stage of language development. There are many ways to promote this development, including engaging in musical activities. When baby first starts to coo and babble, if you imitate her, you are showing her that you understand her efforts to communicate, which will motivate her to continue! As well as having a 'conversation' as baby learns the pattern of taking turns, you will also notice baby imitating the inflection of your words. Although she can't pronounce the sounds of your words, the expression in her voice will indicate how she is trying to copy them, and how she understands their meaning. Into the first year you can use long vowel sounds such as those in animal sounds like moo, baa, neigh, cheep. When your toddler has mastered these sounds, they will also use them to represent the animal they are referring to, in this way showing their symbolic understanding of how sounds represent objects or creatures. If you sing to your young child and play music with her, the music itself is shaping and impacting her cognitive development. The brain grows in response to musical training in the way a muscle responds to exercise. Studies have shown that participating in musical experiences can have a global effect on cognitive skills, including speech development. As baby approaches his first birthday, a great way to encourage vocalisation and speech is to get close face to face, enabling baby to see your mouth movements as you talk. You will see him also moving his mouth, copying the way your mouth moves and learning how lip movements play a big part in talking. 12

It's important to teach your toddler that our ears are used for hearing, and you can reinforce this by rubbing around the outside of the ears as a cue for listening. By doing this you are stimulating the reticular activating system which helps the brain to be alert and focused on the information coming in through the ears. It is also important to understand that hearing is a physiological activity which involves the ears and brain, but listening is a mental process which requires hearing, attending, understanding and remembering. An important part of speech acquisition is being able to recognize patterns and rhythm, which of course are an integral part of music. Studies show that when a child regularly participates in musical activities it enhances their ability to detect patterns in sounds. When infants and toddlers hear someone speaking, they listen to the patterns made by the units of speech and the rhythm of the language. In this way music is providing a foundation on which young children's language skills are built.

I'm a Nurse. What's your Superpower?

by Debra Landini

I bought myself a fold-up Tote Bag the other day that had a patch on it, which read: I'm a Nurse. What's your Superpower? It made me giggle. (And I love bags, so I had to buy it). When I showed it to my daughter, (who isn't a Nurse), she said, “Mum, I've got a Superpower too”. “Oh, what's that?” I asked. She said, “I'm a Mum.” I thought this through, and I believe she's right. All Parents have Superpowers. Being a Parent is such an enormous role that it is essential to develop Superpowers….juggling multiple tasks or multiple little beings at the same time, planning ahead for complex excursions, handling an incredibly dynamic family budget, and the list goes on. But just like Superman and his weakness (defeated by Kryptonite), we Parents need to know that we can stumble and feel defeated by certain circumstances. The “normal” heartaches in life, like losses (loved ones, pets, jobs etc.) most would recognise as a difficult time and know that grieving goes with these events. Stresses like money worries and illness also fall into a common experience of struggle. But what about times with your otherwise healthy children, when their behaviour “drives you to the brink”? Ordinary child development involves challenges for Parents. These challenges may be small, or they may be very big!

child may sail through the process and so when child number 2 reaches an appropriate age, you expect another easy ride. Instead, it's a nightmare! Not just “wee wee” accidents but “poos” in the pants, over and over again. All the while the child keeps refusing to wear a nappy. What do you do? You can ask family and friends for opinions or research it on the Net. Or you can ask an appropriate health professional. Your MCH Nurse is a good place to start or Parent's Helpline. If an older child (5 years or older) continues to wet the bed at night (at least twice a week), you can engage the assistance of your GP who may refer you to a Specialist. It is important to seek help if bed-wetting worries your child or affects what they want to do, like sleep overs. There are several techniques that can be used to assist, such as those recommended by Triple P (Positive Parenting Program). Back to Parents' Superpowers. Remember, a really important Superpower is to seek out advice when things get tough, and smile…

Take the example of Toilet Training. Your first 14

Puzzling through a Pandemic I wasn't sure what staying at home with two toddlers and a working from home husband was going to be like during a pandemic. I soon found out it was tough. Real tough. I spent day after day in the backyard playing, inside the house playing, making snacks, making dinners, making more snacks, and making more dinners. I've been doing jigsaw puzzles for over 20 years and during lockdown, I completed a few and it really gave me a feeling of 'time out' and it was something just for me. I'd always wanted to turn my jigsaw puzzle hobby into a side business so I finally dedicated some time during lockdown to get started. I sell my own photos as jigsaw puzzles or people can have their personal photo printed as a puzzle. After setting up my website, which took months and so much brainpower, it was finally live. Trying to work out the finances and legal requirements was difficult to get my head around but I finally got there. I went live before Christmas and even made a few sales. It has been a massive learning experience professionally and personally. I have a background in marketing so I thought I would find the process easier but when you're accountable for every single part of the business the pressure is on you. I work on the business at night and when my youngest decides to have a day nap. It has been hard juggling motherhood and running a business but once you achieve a few small wins you see the hard work paying off and it makes you want to keep going. I love that I get to share my passion with others and I love supporting Australian business with all my puzzles being printed right here in Melbourne. Advertise NOW..... Call Kate 0497 788 856

TIME To One of the most difficult things a parent will do in life is to fully entrust their child to a teacher and school for the first time. This is the one thing that all parents face on the first day of school. Whether it is your first, fifth or even tenth child starting school, all children and all parents react differently and often unpredictably. Even children who have been around the school as toddlers while accompanying their older sibling to school will feel their 'first day gravitas', wearing a school uniform for the first time and saying farewell to parents or carers. Many schools have a staged introduction to the school year for Prep and I have found this to be a wonderful way of building children's resilience, stamina, sense of control and understanding of the many new school processes and procedures they will encounter. A staged process might include transition days, attending the first week until midday, the second week until 1pm and building to full scale 8.55am to 3.30pm within a month. The greatest thing a parent or carer can do on that very first day of school is 'Let Go'. Parents who are able to 'Let Go' quickly are fostering in their child a greater self confidence and adaptation to a school routine, where the teacher now assumes the role of the authority 20

figure in each child's eyes and minds. A phrase I hear a lot these days is 'my child has anxiety', but often this legitimizes a parent remaining in the classroom far too long and actually making matters far worse than if they had 'Let Go' lovingly, but confidently. Most teachers can assure you that 99.9% of children will settle quickly after a parent has left the classroom in those first few days of school. Some helpful hints for first (or even fifth time) parents: * Begin to acclimatize your child to school early. Attend every possible transition session in the year before beginning school. Pin up a photo of your child's class teacher; practice saying the teacher's name, and openly wonder together about all the great things your child will learn in Prep in the following year. Gradually take the focus off you, the parent, and make your child's class teacher the focus of conversations about school. * Drive past your primary school prior to beginning school. Build your child's excitement for primary school - making new friends, being in a new classroom, wearing a school uniform. School should be like going to a Luna Park of Learning - truly amazing and something to look forward to! * On the first day of school, most parents will be invited to stay for a while, but then it will be time to 'Let Go'. Do not say goodbye, as this sounds too final in a child's mind. Instead say “See you at lunch time”. This assures your child that you will return to collect them, which is their main fear.

Let GO.... * It is normal for a child to miss you. This is not anxiety…. this is normal…..they are simply missing you! * It would be astonishing if they did not miss you. Teachers are trained to deal with a child who is upset, comfort them and then redirect them into an engaging activity and 'happy' state of being. Parents who are able to 'Let Go' are doing themselves, their child, their teacher and their school the biggest favour. Making yourself redundant (not unloved…there is a huge difference….) will lead to a child who is independent, confident, socially welladjusted and ready to learn. And isn't that what every parent wants for their child?

Reading with

Young Children

Why should you read with your young child? Ÿ Reading is a vital part of your child's development. Reading aloud with your young child helps develop Ÿ the skills that are needed when he or she starts school. You are not trying to “teach” your young child to read before they begin school but you are helping him or her to develop a love of books. Your child will understand how a book works and get to know how much fun they can be. Ÿ Reading aloud is also a time when you can bond with your child. The pictures and the words in the book will give you lots of things to talk about, laugh about, have fun with, while you share some special time together. When should you begin to read with your young child? Ÿ There is no specific age to begin but the earlier the better. Some say that reading to young children should begin soon after birth, while others say it should start around 4 to 6 months when babies have a degree of head control and can be propped in your lap. Ÿ Your baby will love being held in your arms, listening to your voice, and sharing the pictures in the book, so start as early as possible. How often should young children be read to? Ÿ There is no magic figure about how long or how often. Young children do like routines so developing an everyday reading routine is suggested. This can be part of a bedtime routine, however you may find that your child will choose books and share reading at any time of the day, just because they like it. Ÿ How do I get my young child involved? Ÿ Your young child does like the sound of your voice, so turn off the TV and radio so your child can hear your voice. They will also be less distracted, and can focus on the book you are sharing with them.

28

Ÿ Sit your child close or on your knee so that you

are both comfortable, and can clearly see and touch the book. Encourage your child to point to things in the book, and let them turn the pages. Ÿ Let your child choose the books to read. They may like to have the same book read over and over, because they will know what comes next and can be more involved. Imagine how good your child will feel about themselves when he or she tells you the word that finishes the sentence or describes what is going to happen next. Their interests will change as they grow, so it is easier to let them choose the book and they will share with you what they are interested in. Ÿ Play games and have fun. You can use the book to get started on lots of different activities. Your young child will like being moved to the rhythm of the book, or doing actions to match the book. There are many stories that are actually songs. Your child will love to sing along to the story. Ÿ Ask questions and point to things in the book. Help your child to explore what they see in the book. Ask him or her to show and tell you about things they like, things they have seen before, the colours they see, and count the things on the page. Ÿ Join the library. Make visiting the library part of the adventure of books. Your child will have fun selecting the books and they will have lots to choose from. You may also be able to go to “read aloud” sessions at the library. This shows your child that there are many people who love reading and you can have lots of fun. This advice about reading with your young child has been provided by the Let's Read program.Let's Read has been developed by the Centre for Community Child Health in partnership withThe Smith Family.
