Hi & welcome to our November Issue!! I do love this time of year! As the weather starts to warm up and we get to enjoy more time outdoors thanks to daylight savings. Watching butterflies flutter through the yard and the trees starting to re sprout after their long winter hibernation we all just seem to be that little bit more happier in Spring! This is also my birthday month (21 again!) and we usually head away on a family holiday but this year we have decided to postpone it although now I’m wishing that we hadn’t! Its been a long and busy year for us all and I think it would have been a perfect chance to recharge before the craziness of the Christmas season is upon us! It’s around this time of year that kinder kids are doing their transition days at the school that they will be heading to next year. For some this is exciting and for others its very frightening. Being as prepared as you can be is helpful for them and we have an article on page 6 “Let’s Talk About School Readiness” that gives some great tips on this. This is also the time of year that families should be coming together to celebrate and share happy times but this may not be the case for you. The article on page 14 “How We Heal Relationships with Family at Christmas Time” gives some advice on how you could potentially change it. November is also a busy month locally for Fetes, Open Days and fun in our area. Check out our What's On for what’s happening and throughout the magazine. The Pat Cronin Foundation will be holding their annual Walk to the Valley on Sunday the 17th November. Pat was a local young guy who went out with his mates after footy in Diamond Creek and died as a result of a senseless punch to his head. As a mum of 3 boys this story makes my stomach drop thinking of the heartache that his family must feel. Our family will be joining in on the walk and to help raise money and awareness to End The Coward Punch - maybe we will see you there? I hope you enjoy our latest issue and remember to check out our advertisers as there may be something to do or see or somewhere to go that may interest your family or someone your know!

Out and About

PETRIE PARK Mountain View Road MONTMORENCY This month we took a trip to Montmorency to visit an old favourite that we use to go to when the older boys were little! The playground has a lovely secluded location away from the road with plenty of parking and the train runs past for any Thomas the Tank fans. The equipment is well spaced with plenty to keep kids happily entertained as they explore the different parts of the brightly coloured play equipment. The main structure has 2 slides of different sizes, stepping blocks, walking bridge, a chain ladder, climbing wall & mat, tic-tac-toe and a firemen pole, plus underneath is another area for play with a clock and steering wheel. There is also a train &

10

carriage with 2 parts to play on & climb through. It’s completed with 4 swings, a 4 seated spinner, 2 rockers, drums and a roped pyramid for the more adventuress! There is shaded seating & tables with BBQ facilities & newly updated toilets close by. Another bonus across from the park is a huge cannon on display that they can climb on. The playground is more suited to younger children but there is also an oval just beyond the park for some footy, soccer or cricket practise. But if all else fails there’s the RSL just across from the park so you could all go for a nice lunch or hot chocolate as a treat afterwards & they do take away coffee too!!

Be Wise Walk to the On Saturday the 16th of April 2016, Pat went out to a local bar / cafĂŠ for a quiet night and he was punched from behind whilst assisting a mate. He was later taken to hospital and two days later we made the agonising decision to turn off his life support system.

Quietly spoken and gentle natured but with a fierce determination, Pat was enormously popular and had a deep love for his family and friends. His death has left a gaping hole in our lives and caused devastation amongst not only us but also his friends and the broader communities in which we have been involved. We are determined that Pat's life be honoured and that no other family should face the devastation we now face as a result of his senseless death. The first intention of the Pat Cronin Foundation is to honour Pat and everything we do will focus on that. The secondary intention of the Pat Cronin Foundation is to prevent coward punch attacks and we will do this through: Awareness, Education and Research. Pat was a normal kid. We are just a normal family. We live in a normal suburb. If this can happen to us, it can happen to anyone

Be Wise. There Is No Excuse. END THE COWARD PUNCH The 4th annual Pat Cronin Foundation Be Wise Walk th to the Valley is being held on Sunday the 17 of November and registrations are now open. We are encouraging all local residents to register to help us to spread our Be Wise message to End the Coward Punch. When you register you can elect to create a team for you, your friends and family to join. This year we are aiming to have 3,000 participants so register now to be a part of a very special day. As in previous years, the Walk will start at Warringal

Park Heidelberg and follow the Yarra trail through the Banyule Flats before turning off to the Plenty River Trail up the hill and down the other side to finish at the Lower Plenty Football Ground where Pat loved playing football. Total distance is around 8km. At Warringal Park, the Heidelberg Cricket Club will be selling Bacon and Egg rolls and drinks and we will have a coffee van to give everyone their Sunday morning fix of caffeine. At the finish line at Lower Plenty Football Ground, we will have BBQs running as well as Slow Eddy's Texan BBQ to keep the hungry hordes fed & the bar (manned by our friends at the Lower Plenty Cricket Club) will be open after 12pm. We will also have music / entertainers and a big jumping castle/slide for the kids at the ground to make it a real 'Day on the Green' feel. The Five C's car club will also have a huge display on the oval of classic cars.

Valley 2019 In past years we have had plenty of people contact us who have said they would have loved to have joined the Walk but it was too far away, they had something else on, they were away for the weekend, they lived interstate or even lived overseas. Well this year we have great news for all of these people with the option to join in by doing their own walk somewhere else. We simply ask those people who want to support the Pat Cronin Foundation but can't make it to the Be Wise Walk to the Valley and join in the fun to register and do their own 8km walk wherever they happen to be in the world on the 17th of November. You could get a group of your family and friends together and set out a course of 8km (the same as the Be Wise Walk to the Valley) and join us from afar to walk to End the Coward Punch.

Simply register using the option to 'Walk to Anywhere' and we will send you your event T Shirt to wear as you do your own Walk. When you are out and about we would love you to post a photo to our social media pages to show your support. We know we have a huge number of supporters who live interstate or overseas so this is your way to get involved and walk to remember Pat and to End the Coward Punch. Let's see how far away from Pat's beloved Lower Plenty oval we can get people walking! Registration fee for Adults and children 12 and over is $30 and for children under 12 is $15 and all entrants receive an event T Shirt. To register for the walk please follow this link: www.mycause.com.au/event/walktothevalley2019
