Hi & welcome to our October Issue!! .It feels like every time I sit down to write this there is always holidays - they are either coming, just been or we are in them! I remember being a kid and thinking there was never enough of them but now I know what my Mum must have felt like!! This month is a triple birthday month for us. My hubby and Ollie celebrate their birthdays a day apart. Ollie will be turning 6 this year and is looking forward to a party with all his school friends. Prep parties are very cute and social. It’s when boys and girls invite each other before they become boys or girls only parties kind of “one in all in”. In the middle of the month my eldest nephew will be turning 15. I remember the day he was born and how thrilled and besotted we all were with him. He is still pretty cute just a whole lot bigger! We also found out some interesting news about our bunny Gavin. He’s actually a she and her name is now Gabby. After living in a house full of boys all these years its so different to be saying the words “she and her” but I love it. She has grown so big since she joined our family and has settled in like she always lived here. Now with the nicer Spring weather we all spend time outside on the grass with her. Spring is a good time to make changes and form some better habits. We have an article on page 14 “De-Stress this Spring” giving some tips on how we can bring some calm to our busy lives and minds. Another article on page 20 is perfect for this time of year - it’s titled “Gardening” and it’s a lovely reminder about the benefits of spending time outside with our kids. As a treat for all the help in the garden on page 25 we have a delicious recipe for Toblerone Self Saucing Pudding - I’m sure you will have many volunteers to help you even if it’s just to lick the spoon!
As always I hope you enjoy this months issue and I wish you and your family a bright and sunny month.

We Can Help Archie Find A local family, the Melling family, are on a mission to save their son, Archie. Archie Melling was born on October 13, 2015, and although a little early, he was a happy, healthy little boy. He is the Melling's third child, with older siblings, Phoebe 9 and Oliver 7. By the age of 13 months, Archie was a bubbly, curious and happy little guy. He was achieving all his milestones, almost walking unaided, eating independently and talking. On the 27th of November 2016, beautiful little Archie, experienced what is known as his first “Mito crash Almost 8 weeks after Archie was born, in December 2015, their daughter Phoebe was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. Given the complexities/location of her tumour and their concerns about the only treatment available in Australia, Phoebe travelled with the family to the USA for treatment. After an 18 month fight through treatment, she has many side effects of treatment that her family manage. However, she is now tumour free. It was just 12 months after Phoebe's cancer diagnosis, that Archie collapsed. Archie was transferred to The Royal Children's Hospital, where he was placed into an induced coma. Once Archie woke up slowly, it became apparent that everything had changed. Archie had lost all of his skills, and was like a floppy rag doll, which stiffened with very painful muscle spasms called dystonia. It took some time to establish what was wrong with Archie, as all the tests came back negative. Archie had a brain scan, called and MRI, which showed changes consistent with a condition called Leigh's disease. Archie went on to have exome sequencing (a genetic DNA test), which took 3 months to come back. When it did, Archie was diagnosed with Short-chain enoyl-CoA hydratase, ECHS1 gene deficiency (ECHS1d). An

extremely rare mitochondrial disease affecting only about 20 children worldwide. A cancer diagnosis for Phoebe was devastating, but Archie's diagnosis was to be so much worse. ECHS1 Deficiency and Leighs Syndrome are mitochondrial diseases. Mitochondrial diseases affect the ability of our body to break down food (metabolize) in order to produce energy. Most of the children affected by a mitochondrial disease don't even have the energy to walk or talk. They are in great danger during infections and illnesses as mitochondria can be found in all the cells and it should produce energy. When it doesn't work properly, the organs like the heart, liver, kidneys start to shut down because there isn't enough energy to protect the body from the virus and to maintain the functions of the organs in the same time. Archie is now 3 years old, he is quadriplegic, non-verbal, suffers pain from severe muscle

A Cure For ECHS1D dystonia (spasms), is enteral fed (a tube into his stomach) and takes many medications. Archie has frequent admissions to hospital, with chest infections and viruses. Archie loves music (his favourite being The Wiggles), riding his (fully gait assisted) tricycle, animals, hanging out with family and friends, going to kinder and foxes. He remains a bubbly and happy little man. When Archie was first diagnosed, the family were told there would probably never be a cure for him in his lifetime. However, much has changed recently in the world of genetics, doctors and scientists now see how targeted gene therapy is changing this. The team at UT Southwestern in Texas, America are starting preclinical testing for ECHS1. This need to do done now, in these children's lifetime.
auctions. Please invite your family and friends to join them for such a wonderful cause. Tickets are available at www.curearchie.eventbrite.com.au The family are also in need of items for the live and silent auctions on the night. It is expected that around 400 people will attend. All proceeds will be pooled together with the fundraising efforts from the families around the world, living with this diagnosis. If you prefer or are in a position to do so, there is also an opportunity to donate via Archie's Gofundme page: www.gofundme.com/archies-embrace-cure-echs1d
The family was told there will probably never be a cure for Archie in his lifetime and currently the is no real treatment other than vitamins. Life expectancy is unfortunately, largely unknown but is usually only a few years after diagnosis. Targeted gene therapy is changing this, and is providing hope for the future. Around $300,000 is needed to get the clinical trial started for Archie and the other children. The total cost is unknown, however, it is far in excess of this amount. Right now, gene therapy is Archie's only hope for a improved quality of living and a longer life. It's the only hope for kids with ECHS1 deficiency, which is why this special group of families are joining together to raise funds to start gene therapy for the children as soon as possible. A gala dinner, Archie's Embrace – Cure ECHS1D, is planned for October 12th at The Regal Ballroom, Northcote. This fun night will have a live band, beautiful dance performances, an exceptional 3 course meal including beer, wine and soft drink, with live auction and silent
The gala committee can be reached at archiesembrace@gmail.com More information on ECHS1d can be found at www.cure-echs1.com If you would like to follow Archie's journey, it can be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/groups/167018914163302/about/

Out and About
PIONEER RESERVE St. Helena Road GREENSBOROUGH On our search for finding a new playground this month we come across this retro one! It reminded me of playgrounds that I use to play at except there was no metal slide (I think they may have been banned after too many bottoms were burnt - oh the joys of our childhood!) It’s located on the corner of St. Helena Road and Main Street and tucked away from the cars. You can enter the space from two sides and we parked in Joyce Avenue and walked along the path crossing the bridge under the Main Road bridge. This itself was a nice little adventure, watching the water rushing down and being underneath the traffic above. The play area is set in an open space nestled

amongst nature and tucked below some houses which makes it feel like a secluded secret place. The equipment whist older is well spaced and suited to little and big kids. One section is set out like an obstacle course with monkey bars, beams, sliding handle, steps and poles. Ollie loved me timing him as he attempted to climb, swing & manoeuver his way through it. There is also a set of swings and a slide and wobble board if they dare! There’s a covered bluestone picnic hut with table and seating plus some wooden benches in the park if you decide to stay for longer and pack some snacks. Although a rug on the grass would also be nice on a lovely spring day.

Why I chose a Steiner kindergarten for my children
By Sarah Wrigley
As soon as I walked into my local kindergarten I knew that this would be the kinder my children would attend. As it happened, I didn't actually have any children at the time! I first attended the kinder during one of their Autumn Festivals. My husband and I bought some native plants and some delicious homemade cake for our afternoon tea (remember, this was BEFORE children!). I'm sad to say that the plants died (most plants that come in to our possession do that) but my memory of the kinder stayed with me. The beautiful, handcrafted, timber furniture; the huge array of gorgeous timber toys; fresh flowers everywhere; chooks and the most amazing outdoor space I'd ever seen with beautiful bush surrounds that we love so much. I couldn't believe that such a kinder existed, let alone right down the street from me. Visiting their website, I discovered that the kinder was a Steiner kinder. I had only ever vaguely heard of the Steiner approach to education. A quick internet search and I had enough of an understanding to believe that this approach was ideal for young children. The focus on fostering children's connection to the natural environment, celebrating the seasons, maximising creativity and opportunities for imaginative play, just made sense to me. I later found out that the kinder also provides food for the children. This would be bonus enough (anything that makes my life easier is welcome) but it's wholesome, homemade, organic food! I think in some ways this sealed the deal for my husband and I. It made us feel that the kinder's philosophy was closely aligned to our own. Fast forward a few years and we now had two delightful sons – Albert and Sebastian – and Alby was at last ready to go to three-year-old kinder! We were so excited for him. He was a sociable little 3-year-old who was ready to make friends and gain some independence from us and his younger brother. 16

The kinder did not disappoint! Alby settled quickly and easily in to the rhythms of the morning program. I think the homely feel of the kinder really helped and the focus on just the right amount of stimulation for the children – not too much and not too little. Six months on and Alby still loves kinder. He is thriving in the warm, supportive environment provided by both the physical surrounds and the wonderful teaching staff. We couldn't be happier and can't wait for Sebastian to start kinder! We believe the kinder is providing a solid foundation for our children's social, physical and emotional development and will set them up for primary school, whether they attend a mainstream or Steiner school. We are so grateful to have access to such a unique and nurturing learning environment. Sarah Wrigley is mother to Albert, 3, and Sebastian, 2. Albert attends Yandell Kindergarten in Greensborough, a Steiner Kindergarten. www.yandellkindergarten.com.au
