VOLUME 13
Hi & welcome to our October Issue!! For all you parents with children in Primary School - woohoo we made it!! When they made the announcement that Prep through to Grade 6 would be returning all together I think I may have squealed a little!! Probably more for our middle child who is in Grade 6 this year. He watched his older brother last year enjoy his last year of Primary school and has been so annoyed that he hasn’t been able to experience the same things. Fingers and everything else crossed for them to hopefully enjoy what is left of the year. October is always a busy month for us with 4 birthdays to celebrate. Two of them in our household a day apart. Although like everyone else these birthdays will be slightly different. Singing happy birthday over Facetime has become our new normal and the excitement of receiving a card in the post is a lovely surprise too. I also think I have the online shopping down to a fine art although I will enjoy a trip to Kmart when we can get back there! Inside this month we have some fun for the kids with some Spooky biscuits to make for Halloween. Although is highly unlikely that there will be Trick or Treating this year its still fun to celebrate. We are also still running the Pat Cronin competition this month and you can win the new books from The Pat Cronin Foundation. Pat was killed in 2016 from a senseless act of a punch to the head while out with friends in Diamond Creek. His family have worked tirelessly to try and educate people of the damage this can do to not only the victim but everyone involved. They have released a set of 3 books aimed at children. The legacy of Coward Punch victim Pat is set to help educate young people to feel empowered to ‘Be Wise’ and never use violence. See page 27 for how to enter. We’ve also revisited another one of our favourite parks in Eltham North this month that was rebuilt after being burnt down a few years ago. It’s lovely being able to go to a playground again which is something that I’m sure we had all taken for granted prior to Covid. So as we slowly start to return to our new normal its been amazing seeing how we have all stuck together. Established local business trying new things with the support of our community. So don’t just buy from them to show your support help spread their news by following them of their social pages and liking and sharing comments when you can. Check in with your local area to see what’s available for online classes, packs to be home delivered or new opening details. We are still producing our magazine as a digital version (on-line only) for the next few months - you can subscribe and have the issue emailed to you by going to our website and filling in your email address: www.yourchildinbanyuleandnillumbik.com.au Like Us On Take care for now and best wishes for a great month! www.facebook.com/YourChildinbanyuleandnillumbik

Out and About
ELTHAM NORTH ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND Wattletree Road ELTHAM NORTH Like all the families who rate this park amongst their favourites, we were so shocked and saddened when we heard the news of the fire in December 2017. We kept updated with the progress of the rebuild and love the revamped park! (As did our dog Louie - they have a fenced off oval perfect for dogs right in front) When we arrived there was a happy buzz as visitors scampered through the main structure up stairs and down slides, across bridges and along beams. There are climbing rope ladders, tunnels and lookouts. The old tractor wasn’t forgotten with a new shiny replacement located inside. The addition of little shops for endless imaginary play is a welcomed upgrade.
10
There are swings and a flying fox and the children all seem to know the rules and wait patiently for their turns. A dry creek snakes through the area and a large sand pit shaded by the roof of the structure is another favourite for many busy little people. The area is still spacious and again has picnic areas, covered tables and chairs, BBQ’s and a new toilet facility. We got there early and within a short time the car park, which is ample, was almost full. An added bonus has alway been the direct access to Edendale Farm for a full day of adventure plus can also be used for parking. If you haven’t been yet - I have to ask “What are you waiting for?”

MOTHERS HELPING MOTHERS WITH POSTNATAL DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY Have you previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety? Are you interested in providing support to new mothers at risk of postnatal depression or anxiety? Approximately 1 in 5 of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression and/or anxiety and many do not receive the support they require. To help these new mothers, researchers from the La Trobe University are conducting a study called “DAISY – Depression & AnxIety peer Support studY”. This study consists of experienced mothers who have previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety offering mother-to-mother telephone support to new mothers who are at high-risk to develop postnatal depression or anxiety. We are seeking peer support volunteers who have previously experienced (and recovered from) postnatal depression or anxiety. To become a “peer support volunteer” you will need to attend a 4-hour on-line video training session to learn how to provide telephone support. If you are interested in finding out more information or would like to participate in this new telephone-based support study by becoming a peer volunteer, please contact the DAISY study peer volunteer coordinator: Jessica Bee Email: daisy@latrobe.edu.au Phone: 9479 5428
