VOLUME 13
Hi & welcome to our September Issue!! The last time I wrote this we weren’t sure if we were heading into Stage 4 lockdown and now we are almost out of it! Fingers crossed our numbers continue to drop and we all follow the rules and stay safe. It sure has been a roller coaster of emotions in our house. Home schooling hasn’t been as successful as I had hoped but we take the wins where we can! We also have my Dad in a nursing home which has added another layer to our angst with this virus. We’re all looking forward to spending time with him when things return to normal. With September being the month for Father’s Day it had me reminiscing about my childhood and in particular with my Dad. He was a good Dad typical of the era I grew up in - strong and firm and strict at times but a softie deep down! We have a lovely article on page 18 Dreaming of Dad and after reading it I went searching through some old photos. This photo is from my first day at school - we have something similar with all our boys. I wonder if they will do the same with their own children? Our cover photo is of my husband with our oldest son. It’s one of my favourite photos. He sat staring at him like that for such a long time and whenever I see it, it takes me back to that hospital room over 13 years ago!! In Kids Corner we have a questionnaire for the kids to fill out for their Dads for Fathers Day. I love these and have done them for years. Some of the answers are funny and gives an insight to what they think - from the mouths of babes! We also have a competition to win the new books from The Pat Cronin Foundation. Pat was killed in 2016 from a senseless act of a punch to the head while out with friends in Diamond Creek. His family have worked tirelessly to try and educate people of the damage a this can do to not only the victim but everyone involved. They have released a set of 3 books aimed at children. The legacy of Coward Punch victim Pat is set to help educate young people to feel empowered to ‘Be Wise’ and never use violence. See page 26 for how to enter. We also revisited another one of our favourite parks in Diamond Creek. Hopefully playgrounds will be reopened soon so the kids can all enjoy our wonderful outdoors in time for Spring! During these times we all need to stick together. We can support our local businesses by following them on their social pages - some are adapting with online classes to keep offering you services. Check in with your local area to see what’s available. We are still producing our magazine as a digital version (on-line only) for the next few months - you can subscribe and have the issue emailed to you by going to our website and filling in your email address: Like Us On www.yourchildinbanyuleandnillumbik.com.au Take care for now, Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads and best wishes for a great month!

Out and About
Rotary Centennial Park Wamba Road DIAMOND CREEK We live in a great part of Melbourne & I always look forward to checking out the parks & playgrounds that are available to all of us. A few months ago family headed to Diamond Creek for an afternoon late lunch & park visit. We all happily played & enjoyed the space until the sun started to fade & the it became a little too cool. Located just off Main St is this fantastic space that has recently been upgraded. The main structure has an abundance of play options for big & little kids, that includes monkey bars, balancing disks, spider web, rope & rock wall, slides, bridges, a tunnel & shop window. There’s also an orbit spinner, geo climber, musical metal chimes, a hammock, a set of swings including a nest swing and a half court basketball area. If you have a spare $5 you can play on the colourful table tennis table getting balls and bat from the petrol station across the road. The play space is fenced off along the road and has

an undercover BBQ area, tables and bench seats and new clean toilets with baby change tables as well. The outdoor netball courts are located to the rear of the park and provides a smooth flat surface that's perfect for scooters, bikes or remote control cars. Ollie was highly impressed with the bridge crossing the Diamond Creek and he happily played along the grassed area making pretend fishing rods. This will definitely become another favourite for us and I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we all did. Another bonus is there are plenty of cafes close by so grab a coffee and some treats to take with you!

MOTHERS HELPING MOTHERS WITH POSTNATAL DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY Have you previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety? Are you interested in providing support to new mothers at risk of postnatal depression or anxiety? Approximately 1 in 5 of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression and/or anxiety and many do not receive the support they require. To help these new mothers, researchers from the La Trobe University are conducting a study called “DAISY – Depression & AnxIety peer Support studY”. This study consists of experienced mothers who have previously experienced postnatal depression or anxiety offering mother-to-mother telephone support to new mothers who are at high-risk to develop postnatal depression or anxiety. We are seeking peer support volunteers who have previously experienced (and recovered from) postnatal depression or anxiety. To become a “peer support volunteer” you will need to attend a 4-hour on-line video training session to learn how to provide telephone support. If you are interested in finding out more information or would like to participate in this new telephone-based support study by becoming a peer volunteer, please contact the DAISY study peer volunteer coordinator: Jessica Bee Email: daisy@latrobe.edu.au Phone: 9479 5428
