April 2019
In this issue of FIVE MINUTES WITH, we are pleased to introduce Kate Giles, Head of Junior School, Ruyton Girls’ School. q What is the advantage of a girls only education in the early years? In the early years a girls only education sets the scene for girls to take the lead. Individualised attention fosters curiosity and participation in all studies. Free from genderbased stereotypes, girls are encouraged to be any person they want to be and that their voice matters. In the early formative years, a Girls' School builds a solid foundation of confidence, this stays with Ruyton girls for life.
q As Head of the Junior School at Ruyton, what is the approach to primary years learning? Many people who visit Ruyton comment on the warm and connected atmosphere and whilst this endures decade after decade, our curriculum is constantly evolving. There is a strong focus on laying the foundations in literacy and numeracy but increasingly we are creating opportunities for creativity, collaboration, intellectual risk taking and design thinking to come into the fold. Our Studios provide agile learning spaces to support our girls in working collaboratively and create a home for learning. We take a dynamic approach, focusing on the growth of girls. q How would you describe a Ruyton Girl? I'm continually inspired by the tangible sense of spirit that is definitively Ruyton Girls'. Whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, adventuring at camp or playing in the grounds, our girls learn by doing. Ruyton girls design, build, engage in collaborative investigations, develop language skills in Chinese and French and always ask questions. On an Assembly day, you will find girls sharing the new skills and learning they have discovered, sparking the curiosity of other girls. The spirit of a Ruyton girl is infectious and what I love most about our School, is that at Ruyton, you can be any type of girl. q What inspired your caring commitment to educating and raising girls? Attending an all girls' school where my mother was an Old Collegian, I was always encouraged to give everything a go. I grew up surrounded by incredibly strong women and role models who instilled in me a sense of hope and promise about the world and my future. In many ways, I was naive to some of the challenges women face in the world, some more visible than others, but my girls' school education allowed me to go after everything with gusto and grit.

A recent report “Through Growth to Achievement” by the Australian Education Expert David Gonsky suggests that the current system based on a 'one size fits all' method of teaching is ineffective due to its lack of focus on 'individual learning'. The respect, recognition and reward for the teaching profession, which it deserves for the future of Australia, has eroded over the past decades. In the process lower number of applicants for the teaching profession has resulted in very low university entry requirements for the teaching qualification, with its consequent impact on school education. A Principal of a very reputed High School highlighted the need for homework for learning and successful outcomes in his submission to a Parliamentary Committee on Homework. His school provides the highest cohort of students from any one school to Melbourne and Monash Universities. Many schools follow no homework or very limited homework policy. Moreover, when homework is given, it is not monitored to support the students in relevant areas. Not surprisingly, a recent international report from the United Nations Children's Fund has ranked Australia 39th out of 41 middle and high income countries in achieving quality education. The findings, based on numeracy and literacy of 15-year-old students, ranked Romania and Turkey below Australia. Ace Learning Centre promotes independent self-learning with focus on learning than on being taught. A free initial assessment, without obligation to enrol, enables Individualised Study Plan (ISP) to be customised for each student. ISP, based on student's current level of knowledge and skills, and not on school grade or age, aims to progress the student well beyond his/her school grade level. This is achieved through the very unique features of “The Ace Package”.
ASK A VET with Dr Suze What is heartworm? Canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasitic worm considered endemic in Australia. It can also be found in temperate, tropical and subtropical areas of North, Central and South America and in parts of southern Europe. It causes canine heartworm disease, a serious and potentially fatal condition affecting the heart and lungs. How can my dog get heartworm? Heartworm is spread from dog to dog via a mosquito vector, meaning that the transmission occurs if a mosquito ingests blood from a heartworm infected dog and then goes on to bite your dog.The ingested blood from the heartworm affected dog contains heartworm microfilariae, the first stage of the heartworm lifecycle. The microfilariae continue their development into the infective larval stage once inside the mosquito. This infective larval stage is then transmitted to the new dog host via the mosquito bite. Once inside the new host the larvae eventually migrate to the large blood vessels near the heart, the pulmonary arteries, where they mature into adults. Can my cat get heartworm? Cats are not the preferred host of the heartworm and most worms are unlikely to reach adulthood. Some infections can resolve on their own where as in others, the immature worms have the potential to cause problems. Can you treat heartworm? Medical treatment is available however it is not without risks and may involve periods of cage rest and restricted exercise. There is no approved drug treatment for cats. It should be noted that the prevalence of heartworm in Australia is relatively low and clinical cases are rare but given the serious nature of this parasite, prevention is always better than cure. There are a number of ways you can protect your pets against the risk of heartworm infection. For dogs there are monthly topical and oral treatments. There is also a yearly injection available for those who find monthly treatments difficult to remember! For cats there are monthly topical and oral preparations available. Speak to your local veterinarian to see what treatments will work best for you and your pet. Did you know‌ The lifespan of the adult canine heartworm can range between 5–10 years!
