ASK A VET with Dr Suze Why do cats have whiskers? The whiskers on your cat's face are specialised sensory hairs called vibrissae.Vibrissae are stiffer and approximately 2-3 times thicker than regular cat hair. They can be found either side of the muzzle, the jaw, above the eyes and at the back of the forelegs, just above the paw.Vibrissae grow from special hair follicles, rich in nerve endings which feed into the sensory cortex of the brain. These tactile hairs help cats navigate in small spaces and in reduced lighting. They are able to sense changes in air currents, which may be vital for detecting danger or locating prey. Whiskers can also reflect your cat's mood, for instance, forward facing means alert or hunting. Whiskers flattened against the face may signal your cat is frightened or angry.

Can I use my dog's nose as an indicator of health? There is a commonly held myth that healthy dogs should have cold wet noses. However, it is possible for perfectly healthy dogs to have warm dry noses, just as it is unwell dogs to have noses that are cold and wet! Given this, using your dog's nose as a sole measure of health can be unreliable and misleading.Vets will often use a range of parameters such as your dog's appetite, activity levels, weight, coat condition and the absence of any abnormal clinical signs when assessing a patients' overall health status. Should I keep my cat indoors at night? The Boroondara council encourages cat owners to keep their cats on their property (ideally indoors), particularly between dusk and dawn. About 80 per cent of accidents involving cats occur at night and this is also when they are most likely to hunt native wildlife. Ensuring your cat is desexed before you let them venture outside helps avoid unexpected litters, reduces the risk of your pet getting into road traffic incidents, cat fights and consequently their exposure to diseases such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Fun animal fact: Koalas have fingerprints so similar to humans that even crime scene investigators have difficulty telling the difference! Not all animals have fingerprints so why koalas have evolved with this feature remains a mystery. Dr. Susanna Gamage BVSc MRCVS has over a decade of international veterinary experience and is the founding director of Dr. Suze - My Visiting Vet. If you have general pet question you would like answered by Dr. Suze please email susanna@drsuzemyvisitingvet.com.au. Please note the information in this article is of a general nature and is not intended to be a substitute for professional healthcare advice. If you have specific concerns about your pet, you should always seek advice directly from your veterinary healthcare practitioner. 14 Shop Local and mention Your Child in Boroondara

To coincide with World Environment Day, Melbourne's vibrant shopping strip in the Inner East has asked local primary school children to design the face of Kew Junction's new reusable shopping bags. With $2500 up for grabs for the winning school and a party for 10 children at Kew Rec Centre or Bounce, this has been an opportunity for local grade 5's and 6's to show off their creative skills for the greater good. Children were asked to depict a logo, picture or slogan that encapsulated one of the following themes: shop local, reduce plastic bags or sustainable community. The winning design will feature on all reusable bags distributed to Kew Junction traders. The competition was judged by the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, Federal Member for Kooyong and Minister for the Environment and Energy, along with Jan Rowlinson, the manager of QArt Studio and Gallery, and Tijan Biner, editor at United Media Group. Why it's time to ditch single-use plastic bags According to Plastic Bag Free Victoria, plastic bags are the fifth most littered item in the state. Plastic bags never biodegrade but instead break down into tiny plastic particles, which then pollute the planet's fragile ecosystems.

Winning design was Preshil student, Elodie Rose and the other finalists were: Genezzano FCJ College Lara Bryce MLC Keira Murugasu Ruyton Girls' School Leija Michael Sacred Heart College Georgina Fletcher Trinity Grammar School Henry Jones Xavier Burke Hall Zack Gerraty

What to do * Cut the large diameter straw in half so it is shorter * Cover one end with Blutak so it is blocked * Put the normal straw inside the large straw * Hold onto the thin straw and blow really hard The air you blow into the straw hits the Blutak and makes the large straw fly! Try hitting a target once you get the hang of it!
